Santa in a Kilt by Donna Kauffman is a holiday romance novella that takes place isle of Kinloch, a small Scottish island. This novella was originally published in a three story collection in Unwrapped. This one is also a part of the Hot Scot Trilogy with two previous novels however it has different main characters so it is find as standalone.

Kira MacLeod is just starting to want to return to the dating world after having gone through a divorce. Kira has her eyes on the single Shay Callaghan and when both attend the wedding of some close friends Kira feels it’s her opportunity. Shay however will not be an easy catch being a divorce lawyer himself and not believing happily ever after is in his future.

Santa in a Kilt was of course a really quick read at novella length and that is exactly why I wasn’t over the top for this one. Having loved several of Donna Kauffman’s previous works I was surprised to find myself not really engaging with this couple and feeling things were rushed through to get to the steamier side. I just personally didn’t feel the love and would have liked more to their beginning.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

4 - "I want nothing so much as I want you…" Stars!

I don’t feel like I can fully get into the Christmas spirit now without reading at least a couple of Donna Kauffman seasonal offerings before the big day. Santa in a Kilt is one such offering of hers I have read in this year’s build up, and as always it left me feeling all Christmassy, warm and sparkly!

”You’ve only been here but a moment and this place already feels more like home…”

"…It only took a moment to know it’s a home with you that I want."

Confirmed bachelor Shay Callaghan has watched his two best friends get wed and settle into happily married bliss, believing he is incapable of that sort of relationship with a woman, so he makes do with appreciating Kira MacLeod from afar, but they live on a small island and it doesn’t take long for their paths to start crossing, on a regular basis, or for them to acknowledge the chemistry bubbling between them, but can they more on from casual to something more solid and committed.

"I don’t sleep well at all anymore when you’re not next to me…"

Short, sexy, sweet and satisfying, the author delivered again, and left me itching for more, I need to make time to read the previous books in this series like yesterday!

ARC generously provided by the author, via netgalley, in exchange for the above honest review.

A cute short story to pass time by. The Scottish aspect of the story made it more interesting although I slightly wish it was a full novel and not just a compilation of short stories.

Another grab based on title alone and the promise of Christmas in Scotland, of course. I enjoyed a few of the author's earlier holiday stories so was happy to pick this one up.

Santa in a Kilt is book 2.5 of the Hot Scot Trilogy and, while I read this as standalone and it worked, it also tied strongly to the earlier two stories so that I knew I would have gotten more out of it if I'd read in order.

So, this seemed to be a romance for side characters in the series about people from a pair of clans living on an island in the Hebrides islands. It begins with the wedding of Roan and Tessa from Off Kilter. Shay Callaghan stands up with his friend and can't take his eyes off the bridesmaid that has filled his thoughts for a while. He could approach her now that the friend code is lifted when Roan chose Tessa, but between his parents' broken marriage that he survived with his cold, emotionless father and his work as a divorce attorney, he's pretty sure that true, lasting love isn't in the cards for him and Kira Macleod is the forever love sort even if she came home after her ex did a number on her. He'll look from a far and keep his hands to himself. Or so he planned...

Kira doesn't know what has been holding Shay back with the way he looks at her, but for the first times since her ex, she wants a man. She has stayed holed up in her cottage with her basketweaving, licking her wounds, and hiding from life. That has to change and she is determined that handsome, sexy Shay is the man who will help her with this goal. Now, if only she can untie her tongue long enough to put it to him and persuade him that there are no guarantees about love, but it's worth the gamble.

The setting of an island in the Scottish Hebrides with a small village and people still very much bound by old tradition was perfect for a holiday read. Christmas is approaching, but it was background to the recent wedding, the new project of the artisan basketweaving school and business that was the island's biggest draw and income, and, of course the romance.

I enjoyed the descriptions of island clan life and the traditional basketweaving, the friendships of the people, and also the hints of the cosmopolitan life of Edinburgh close by. The characters in the story were engaging and I wanted to go back and read the earlier stories as a result.

As I said, this one was a side story in a series. It was sexy and I enjoyed seeing this hurting pair find happiness in each other. However, I had mixed feelings about the romance itself. It was somewhat under-developed and rushed forward as novellas will do sometimes. They only know each other slightly because of their friends getting involved in their own romance and from living on a small island much of their lives. This was the crux of the matter for me because Shay was really struggling to overcome his childhood abandonment issues and his cynicism about lasting relationships while Kira was full-steam ahead toward long-term and love. She's on a different page from him. She said they would take their time and see where starting a relationship would go while he got used to the idea and worked through is issues, but not even a few weeks' later with days' absences between when Shay was working on cases in Edinburgh, she's inviting herself over and even using long-lasting relationship words and the 'L' word while he was still not even sure he wanted her in his cottage or to treat it as anything more than a friends with benies. He does a quick about face from full on caution to grand gestures not long after her pushing. I didn't dislike her or him for this about face from the first few chapters of wariness, but it kept me from buying into their romance completely. I get it. The story needs a resolution and to be fair I thought he was getting in his own way since he was obviously attracted to her.

In the end, I shrugged and let the warm fuzzies of the story and the setting with the holidays smooth out the romance for me so that I can say that I moderately enjoyed this toasty hot Scot holiday romance. I would definitely recommend reading the series in order and recommend it to those who want some sizzling romance in a remote Scottish island and village.

I rec'd this book from Net Galley to read in exchange for an honest review.

Originally published in a holiday anthology, Unwrapped, this novella instalment to the Hot Scot series is a solid holiday read and perfect for fans of romance, easily consumed as a stand-alone story. And consume it I did: at just over 100 pages, the novella is everything that one expects from a holiday / getaway romance title. Kira is back on Kinloch, an island in the Hebrides, and building her business selling hand-woven baskets, a skill passed down from her grandmother. After her last relationship ended horribly, she’s been more focused on her work and her friends, ignoring romance and occasionally fantasizing about Shay, another local boy now returned to the island, who has made his mark as a successful divorce attorney. While perfectly happy to have non-commitments with the women he dates, he’s not one who believes that happily ever after is for him, even as he celebrates and enjoys seeing his best friends pair off. No one has even interested him, until Kira, but she’s an “everything” sort of woman, and he can’t do that.

Of course, it’s a tiny island where everyone not only knows everyone else, but rarely misses a chance to add in advice, meddle a bit, and cheer on two ‘children of the island”. And the interplay between the two of them, along with the sparks are hotter than Bonfire night! Both Kira and Shay are convinced that their connection is simply physical, even though both want more… it will take several hours together, more hours spent denying the inevitable and several ‘chance’ encounters for the connection to become obvious to the players involved. While not a solidly developed romance because of all the hesitations, the warm fuzzies from it all, with everyone on the island celebrating the two of them together – it just made for a wonderful story.

Kira and Shay are secondary characters in this series, but finding their happiness together while all of their friends seem to be loved up and happiness just pouring forth is wonderful. Getting a peek into island life, traditions and crafts and some clan-determined events is well-detailed, giving readers a sense of the lives on the islands in the outer reaches of Scotland, all with their own unique twists, turns and heart.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

A quick, easy read that was good but had me somewhat lost as I haven't read any other books in the series. It'll teach me not to jump into the middle of a series, but I grabbed this when I got into reading a lot of Christmas short stories in between full-length novels.

Kira is trying to get back to living after recovering from her divorce. She has set her sights on Shay for her future and at their friend's wedding finds it the perfect time to approach him and hopefully begin her new life. She did not know that she would totally be tongue tied when trying to talk to him.

Shay is a divorce attorney, as his dad was as well, and has seen so many failed marriages that he does not believe in Happily Ever After, at least not for him. Deep in his heart, he wants that, but his mind continually tells him that it does not exist.

The electric connection cannot be denied and Shay gives in to it and Kira is overjoyed. No promises are made, and they take the relationship as it is, taking the happiness as it comes and decides to see where it goes.

This is a spicy story that was very easy to read and I totally enjoyed it. There were two books previously in the “Hot Scot” Trilogy that I have not read. I was able to read this book independently, although I am sure reading the other two first would have given me insight into the other character's history.

I want to thank NetGalley.com and Kensington Books for allowing me to read the Advance Reader's Copy of this book. My review is my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.

First, I loved this series and I couldn’t wait to read Shay Callaghan’s and Kira MacLeod’s story. It’s a standalone however it was so much more fun having met all the characters in previous books but you can read it alone.

What I can tell you about these characters is that both Shay and Kira are wearing faces of…joy however deep down, they are hurting and suffering from their own demons, but the world never knows. Overly simplistic explanation but their story, leading to an HEA, is so touching and loving that I felt as if I was there watching every step of the way. I loved both characters. Kira is strong, independent – sometimes to a fault! – and is absolutely gorgeous. She doesn’t believe in herself, in her own worth, her beauty, but reading how she works thru her issues, I felt joy and peace. And Shay…sigh. He is a poster boy for self-recrimination. But the author portrays him in such a way that you cannot help but feel for him, even when he is being a “boy”, stuck in his own head.

When he finally opens himself to Kira, and Kira trusts in her feelings for Shay, their love story gave me the warmest feeling that I’ve had in a long time. There was snark, there was wit, there was a great back story in this book. Loved Shay and Kira and it was fun to revisit with the rest of the friends. Wish I could visit them in their home in Scotland.

Santa in a Kilt by Donna Kauffman

Big smile...yep...this story put a smile on my face just like it put one on the characters in this book! Shay Callaghan, divorce attorney, is a bit leery of happily ever afters due to his mother leaving when he was small and also due to what he has seen while helping clients dissolve marriages. That doesn’t stop him from gazing on lovely Kira MacLeod in a way that has his mates knowing, perhaps before he does, that he is soon going to be hitched like they are if he ever steps up and does more than gaze at the woman who holds his interest. Kira, a weaver, has had a rough divorce to contend with but is ready to embrace life and hopes that life will also embrace Shay. My, this was a delight to read in oh so many ways! I loved Kira’s openness and warm spirit. I loved Shay and found him quite the book boyfriend. Sure, he was worried about breakups before really even in a relationship but boy oh boy was he sizzling male! The two of them together were perfect! I don’t believe I read the first two books in this series but that made no difference at all in being able to thoroughly enjoying this story!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the ARC – this is my honest review.

Good story. Shay is a lawyer who specializes in divorce cases. As a result he sees the worst of what can happen to a relationship and has sworn that he will not succumb to one himself. The difficulty is that he has been attracted to Kira for awhile and knows that she isn't the fling type of woman. When the attraction becomes mutual and overwhelming Shay's thoughts begin to contemplate the future but he is still scared of what could happen. I loved Kira's acceptance of his feelings and the way she was able to wait so patiently for him to come to terms with his love for her and what it means to him.

Donna Kauffman always delivers a good romance. This novella in her Hot Scot series features Rafe and Kira. Rafe, a divorce attorney who doesn’t believe in forever and Kira, a divorcee who still believes in happily ever after. The Scottish island setting, hot Scottish man, relatable heroine and a happy ever after all adds up to a cozy Christmas romance.

Thank you netgalley and Kensington books for an advanced copy.

This was a lovely quick read on a dreary raining afternoon! I've really been enjoying reading Christmas stories and this one was a delightful one.

Kira and Shay are finally a couple but not without issues. Shay is a divorce lawyer and because he's seen so much heartbreak, he refuses to let himself love and settle down. Kira, even though she's gone through a divorce, is ready to love again but knows how Shay feels about that so she's careful not to push him too hard. I loved how open they were with each other and how they were able to work out their problems and my heart smiled when Shay finally realized that Kira was THE one:)

Donna Kauffman is one of my favorite authors and Santa in a Kilt is a wonderful holiday novella!
Second chance trope is my all time favorite!!!! Kira and Shay shine in this novella. Both Kira and Shay both have their baggage. The love story moves quickly but its not predictable.

The story is well written with complex, flawed characters.

I love this author's writing style. I really enjoyed the basket weaving aspect as well.

I highly recommend this wonderful story.

I want to thank Donna Kauffman, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the eBook Kindle copy of Santa in a Kilt that I won in the Giveaway.

Kira MacLeod and the rugged Shay Callaghan have been interested in each other for awhile and have known one another since childhood. They grew up on Kinlock Island and Kira works making baskets that are famous and one of the main income sources for the Island. Shay is a divorce attorney and is determined to never marry or get involved.

Kira has other ideas for Shay. She is so positive, seems to accept him and slowly gets him to change his mind. The story is highly emotional, full of humor and the romance is wonderful with an ending that is romantic and has big surprises too. Santa in a Kilt is a fun and pretty quick read.

I was expecting a funny, romantic story with the title Santa in a Kilt and I did get that with some vivid sex scenes thrown in. Personally, I didn’t like the somewhat over emphasis on the Scottish dialogue.
Overall the book kept me engaged but not one of my favorite Christmas reads.

Kilts at Christmas time. Yes, I know I have a love for highlanders and I tend to review my fair share of books about them. I’m of Scottish decent myself and I love to see how Scottish people are portrayed in romance novels as well as other genres. Donna Kauffman’s Hot Scot series is a guilty pleasure of mine and “Santa in a Kilt,” is a perfect quick read for the busy holiday season.

What I liked:

As I’ve mentioned before, novellas are often short and sweet. “Santa in a Kilt,” is certainly that. This is a previously released novella that originally appeared in a collection of stories called Unwrapped. So, if it seems familiar that may be why. I did not read it the first time it came out so it was new and fresh for me. It was a great chance to see where some characters from the previous books in the series were now along with meeting a new leading couple.

Kira is a strong independent woman. She has returned to the island of Kinloch after a messy divorce. Her basket weaving business is finally doing well and she’s ready to explore a crush she has on Shay. Shay is a jaded divorce attorney that doesn’t see much use for marriage, but he is attracted to Kira. This novella explores what happens who two broken people come together and take a chance at love. I loved their connection, their chemistry and their playful attitude with each other. Kauffman packs a lot into this story and readers will love every second.

The Christmas setting for this one was perfect. I loved Roan’s winter wedding. It was just gorgeous and how could it not provide a great backdrop to Kira and Shay’s love story. It was nice to see Graham again also. You can’t have a Scottish book set in present day and not have a visit from the laird, now can you. This was a great mix of previous characters and new ones. It was definitely time for the last of the boys to find love.

What I didn’t:

I didn’t mind the Scottish brogue of the characters in this book because That’s part of what I enjoy about any book set in Scotland. But I am sure there will be some readers who find it tedious. Keep it in mind but you still gotta read it.

A novella is never quite long enough to satisfy the voracious readers among us but this one is definitely worth the trade off.

Bottom Line:

I recommend you give this one a try. It’s a sweet quick read that will leave you smiling. Great lead couple. Lots of fun banter and steamy moments and of course a wonderful happy ever after.

The morning after the wedding he shows up at her house to talk about what advice she wanted to come see him about. Kira confronts Shay about how he acted the night before. Sparks fly and they end up having sex together and spending time sorting out their feelings. As the days progress and they get closer and share more of themselves they begin to realize that they love each other. Kira asks to come to Shay's house for a visit, but he's not ready. Shay makes a grand gesture when he's ready for Kira to come to his home on the island, she brings him a gift. He shares a special Christmas memory with her. Donna Kauffman continuation of the Kinloch Island series with the novella Santa in a Kilt and she brings together in a steamy story of love and how it changes a life. Kira MacLeod and Shay Callaghan come together to find true love during the Christmas season. Steamy love scenes and frank conversations have these two realizing that they were meant to be together.

Santa in a Kilt is book 2.5 of the Hot Scot Trilogy by Donna Kauffman, I had not read the previous books so it can be read as a stand alone. I do recommend you read in order in order to get the most out of the story.

On the wild dunes of a Scottish Isle, mistletoe and mischief are the best way to heat up a holiday best shared by two . . .

The wind-whipped December sea air of the isle of Kinloch invigorates Kira MacLeod as she sets out to tame rugged Shay Callaghan. The Scottish bachelor may be as wary of a wedding ring as a snowman is of the hot sun, but it’s no secret how he looks at her—as if she were the only woman in the world.

Now, with the encouragement of the canny islanders, and watching two of their best friends tie the knot in a romantic winter wedding, Kira will ignite Shay’s heart—and weave the perfect Celtic Christmas to say aye do . . . Originally published in Unwrapped

I enjoyed the setting of the Scottish isle of Kinloch, along with the descriptions of clan life, traditional basketweaving, and the friendships of the people. The characters in the story were engaging and I was drawn in enough to want to purchase the previous 2 books.

I loved that Kira hangs in there and makes the most out of her life after her divorce. Plus that she decides to explore her old feelings toward Shay.

Great holiday novella!

Shay and Kira’s story in Santa in a Kilt by Donna Kauffman is a wonderful and sweet story of two people wary of love and marriage. Shay is a divorce lawyer and sees relationships mainly after they have fallen apart. Kira returned to the isle of Kinloch after the end of her marriage, putting all of her energy into to her weaving projects. Although Shay is wary of marriage, it’s no secret how he looks at Kira; as if she were the only woman in the world. These two are totally attracted and the electricity between them could light all the homes on their island. Between witnessing two of their best friends marry during a romantic winter wedding and with the encouragement of islanders, Kira will definitely ignite Shay’s heart and weave the perfect path for him to trust her and her love.

Ms. Kauffman, a talented story teller, wrote a joyful, funny, tender sweet, and heartwarming tale that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sexual chemistry, amusing banter, and amazing characters giving Shay and Kira a chance for happiness, love and a future together. I highly recommend Santa in a Kilt to other readers.

A quirky funny novella by Donna Kauffman from her Hot Scot series, Santa in a Kilt was originally published in a three author book called Unwrapped. A holiday read that made my long, rainy day much more fun. Shay Callaghan’s day began with the wedding of his best mate, Roan to his girlfriend, Tessie. He was to stand up with Roan with the third mate, Graham, political Laird of Kinloch, a small Scottish isle. Graham’s wife Katie was best friends with Kira, the woman who Shay could not keep his eyes off of. Shay was a solicitor on the island as well as in Edinburgh.
This charming Cinderella story is fun to read. It will pick up a long day. As all Kauffman’s Hot Scot books, the dialect is Gaelic and makes this winter romance tale more fascinating to read. Santa in a Kilt by Donna Kauffman will be published on October 29, 2019 by Kensington Books. I appreciate Kensington providing me with the pre-release copy. I encourage Kauffman fans to pick this one up, it is a great read.

Santa in a Kilt by Donna Kauffman is a wonderful holiday story about love, life, and not being afraid to reach for your own true happiness.

Even though divorce lawyer Shay Callaghan witnessed the "glorious best" of marriage with his friends' relationships in Kinloch, dealing with his clients made him decide marriage wasn't for him. His longstanding attraction to Kira MacLeod rocks his convictions.

"Kira MacLeod was absolutely a forever and always kind of woman. She deserved no less..and so very much more."

Kira had dealt with the aftermath of her divorce and is done standing on the sidelines. She's ready to go after the man she wants, and Shay doesn't stand a chance.

"She wove her fingers into his hair and turned his mouth back to hers...and never once, in his entire life, had he had such a pure sense of what is was to finally come home."

The story is heartfelt and filled with steamy romance, and you will love how Shay sends a liveried servant to Kira with a special invitation to his home and his life. Another great read from Donna Kauffman!

Oh lord. (Insert eye roll here). This was a pretty short novella and the break-neck pace of the story left my head spinning! lol

Shay and Kira live in a small community outside of Edinburgh and apparently know each other somehow. I am guessing that was in the earlier books in this series. It doesn't matter. They apparently each find the other attractive but it is unclear whether they have actually spoken before this book.

Don't worry. We not only get a first conversation, but over the course of about 4 days we get some steamy sex, some super heavy conversations, a complete 180 change in Shay's stance on relationships, and a picture perfect Christmas proposal.

Dude, it was intense. It was totally over the top. It was too much even for me.

I think I would have liked this more if it were a full length novel and we could have drawn some of this out more or had more insight to what the characters were thinking. But, as a novella, it was hard to take.

3.5 Hearts Originally in Unwrapped (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/075...)

This is a cute Christmas novella that is a fast read of romance. Shay doesn’t believe in love and but Kira does and he knows to be with her he needs to figure out what love really is.

I enjoyed the story and wish it has been a bit longer. I will say that as a fan of Kauffman I can see that she has grown in her writings over the last decade (originally published in 2011).

That being said still a cute highlander Christmas novella by Kauffman.

Sexy Scottish Men
Divorce attorney Shay Callahan is leery of love. His cold blooded father wanted him to take over his divorce practice. He did and became even more disenchanted with marriage, after all he had a front seat to his parents' marriage.
Basket weaver Kira MacLeod, survivor of her own disastrous marriage, wasn't looking for love.
They were attendants at the latest marriage of their friends. They got together, only planning a short, pleasant get together, but ended up in an entirely different relationship.
Ms. Kauffman weaves a story of two broken individuals healing each other. Each makes the other see what they see....a wonderful person deserving the best.
I requested a NetGalley Arc to peruse and recommend it for romance fans, especially so if you love a sexy Scot.

Shay Callaghan has no interest in ever getting married. Being a divorce lawyer he sees too many marriages end in bad blood. The problem is is that he cannot quit thinking about Kira MacLeod. Shay always thought his friend, Roan had his eyes on Kira but when his friend gets married he realizes that he may need to make his move on Kira.

Kira has always been attracted to Shay and now that she is divorced and back in town, she has decided that she is setting her sights on Shay and Roan's wedding might be the best place to start.

As these two spend more time together they quickly realize that these lost souls belong together and before you know it, they are getting their happy ending. This was a fun, quick novella that takes place during the Christmas season with wonderful characters and a fun story line.

This was a fun story about Shay who is a divorce attorney and opposed to marriage because he has seen the devastation it can cause to one's heart. Kira has been divorced but isn't about to give up on the possibility of true love. They both live on the island of Kinloch and have mutual friends who are happily married. Immediately after the wedding of two of those friends, Shay and Kira take a chance on each other. They both agree to nothing serious, just fun but as time goes on is that distance even possible because the heart has a mind of its own?

This story was a quick read and I liked the story very much but didn't enjoy reading the detailed sex scenes. I don't care to know the details of one's sex life.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

Aww. What a wonderfully cute and sweet short story. I love the modern day Scottish setting right before the holiday season when all you want to do is cuddle up with your loved one. And this is what happens in Santa in a Kilt. Shay has been pining for Kira since she moved back into town but he couldn't break the bro code and go after her because his best friend liked her too. But now that said friend just tied the knot, he's ready to pursue her but he's not sure he's the right man for her. All the while Kira has been crushing on him too, but she won't let his fear stop her from grabbing hold of what could be the best love for both of them. Sweet, sexy story that will warm you up for sure. Loved every moment.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This fun, quick read starts with a wedding on Kinloch and ends with a promise of a bright and wonderful future. Shay Callaghan doesn't believe in happy endings or even happy beginnings. As a divorce attorney in Edinburgh he tends to see people at their worst. As his two best friends have married and found happiness in a few short months, he plans to stay as far away from that as possible. Except that Kira MacLeod has other ideas for the handsome Scotsman. She might just teach him a thing or two about taking a chance at love and not letting it pass you by on the chance that it might not work.
