Lots of good ideas to help plan all manner of adventure trips. Divides recommendations into ~100 categories, each 2-4 pages in length, such as: mountain quests, most spectacular rock climbs, most stellar star-lit adventures (i.e. dark skies), biking and hiking, ultimate train rides, tribal encounters, best city hikes, bouldering, river rafting, skiing, caving, sailing, equine trips, and many more. Even a couple of armchair travel categories--books, films, famous adventurers. Includes enticing photos and some websites.
I love to travel. When asked where I want to go, I always say, “the world” b/c that’s what I want to see (I do have some sort of list of priorities). The title of this book caught my attention & I thought it may bring up some ideas for my next vacay. Why not do something different for a change? (ie. instead of the typical: museums, shopping, planned tours, etc. that I do as a tourist)
There were many various possibilities, mostly outdoor rec/sports related. I’m not the athletic type but I thought some of the trips suggested might be fun to try. Some things like train rides, hot balloon rides. Other things were "wow! that'd be amazing" but i'm a chicken so i'd never do them. For exs, iditarod in Alaska, regattas, dive to the bottom of the sea, mountain climbing, etc. And many other things that i never knew were possible like tribal encounters, star gazing, horse/camel/ATV treks.
The book broke it down into various types of activities (ie. animal related activities, sports, climbing, etc.) which was a great way to edit the book. The photos were beautiful! I enjoyed reading about all of the adventures even though i wouldn't do half of them nor could i afford to do some of them. (but i can dream...)
I would recommend this to people who enjoy travel and/or those who are looking for alternative style trips.
This is just a book of starter ideas and dreams. You will never have most of the "adventures" in this book unless you are independently wealthy or sponsored by Red Bull. Don't waste your money buying this book; get from the library, jot down a few fantasy trips, and return it.
I am lucky enough to have done some of these adventures: -Caught a wave off Hawaii -been in the sand of the Mojave Desert -snow run in silverton -El Capitan, Yosemite -rim to bottom of Grand Canyon, and more!
And have added these to my bucket list: Paragliding in Nepal Mountain Gorillas in Uganda Wilderness Trails in S Africa Paddling with Orcas Canada Kayaking at Halong Bay, Vietnam Bungee jumping, New Zealand Extreme slide, Brazil zorbing...anywhere snorkling with sharks in Ambergris Caye, Belize, and soooo many more.
This is the greatest adventure book ever...but also made me feel like a sloth. haha. Time to get out there for some new adventures!
Some of these I have actually done (in my youth) and some I still think I can and will do! #107 Sleep Among Polar Bears, Canada #121 Keep night watch over sea turtles in Nicaragua #153 Hiking the great wall, China #180 The Milford Track New Zealand - this is one of the many ones that I would consider if I could go to New Zealand for a month or so someday. #216 I want to go to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Revitalized my bucket list!
And so it was great fun to read through 1000 different adventures I could be experiencing whilst it drizzles outside. This is the perfect book for travel inspiration and ideas BUT it is not a travel book for advice, trip details, or destination info.
