Hut 33: The Complete Series 1-3

Rate this book
Set during World War Two, Hut 33 follows the adventures of a team of codebreakers at Bletchley Park as they work tirelessly to break German codes, matching wits with the fabled Enigma Machine. Unfortunately, they hate each other.

Archie is a stroppy Geordie socialist revolutionary while Professor Charles Gardner is a toffee-nosed snob. In theory, the immensely stupid 3rd Lt. Joshua Featherstonhaugh-Marshall is in charge of the hut, but he is still struggling with even the most basic concepts, such as his name. They are joined by child prodigy Gordon and the silent Winstanley. There's also Mrs Best, the lascivious landlady, and the hut's Polish secretary, Minka, the only competent member of the team - although her answers to everything usually involve violence.

Starring Tom Goodman-Hill as Archie, Robert Bathurst as Professor Charles Gardner, Alex MacQueen as 3rd Lt. Joshua Featherstonhaugh-Marshall, Fergus Craig as Gordon, Lill Roughley as Mrs Best, and Olivia Colman as Minka.

Those code workers at Bletchley most likely did not have as much fun as I did when I listened to this BBC audio series. This excellent series chronicles the working lives of Hut 33, which is located near Hut 31. Finding it can be slightly more difficult, as Josh will tell you.

Hut 33 contains Archie (he’s from the north) who doesn’t like Professor Charles (they have history). There is Gordon who is a 17-year-old genius. He has a crush on Minka, a Polish woman who escaped to England and is as silent as a house. There is also Mrs. Best the landlady who has had just about every man.

Listen (because it is audio) as they face the evil clubs and the social classes. Wonder if Mrs. Best will have lay hands on Charles. Be awed over the fact that no one kills Josh. Be more impressed that he doesn’t accidentally end his own life. Take bets on when Archie will kill Charles.

Plus, why does Minka hate owls so much?

This is simply hilarious. The occupants of hut 33 are cliched and hate each other. Olivia Colman’s Minka is side splittingly funny. Quite simply this series is brilliant and the funniest thing I have heard for a while. This is worth every bit of a credit and made me laugh out loud a lot!

delightful -- soooooo funny and a wonderful audiobook break in the middle of winter. A real treat!

trigger warning - it's from 2007 and it's british. Absolutely politically incorrect for 2023 north america (that's where/when I'm writing) however I was raised on british humour and still find it laugh out loud funny while acknowledging how far we've come. Plus it features Olivia Colman as Minka, possibly the best thought out character in hut 33.

An absolutely fantastic listen.

I found this show after reading Bleak Expectations, which is another really good series, and was interested in the premise of this one. I have actually read all three series in this audio sitcom and I have to say it was a great listen and a really good laugh.
I didn't think this type of story or set up could get too many laughs out of someone but I'm glad I was wrong, as it's the funniest thing I've listened to in ages.
The characters of the story are all brilliantly created and portrayed and every one of them had quirks about them that made them really entertaining. The characters of Josh, Archie and Charles stood out for me, and I'll certainly be listening to the series again in the future.
A lot of fun to read.
