In Alabama: A deadly outbreak of tornadoes sends K9 handlers, Ryder Creed and Jason Seaver with their scent dogs, Grace and Scout to search for survivors. As storms intensify and Ryder and Jason race against time to save victims, they end up racing to save themselves.
—NOT EVERYONE’S STORM IS THE SAME—
In Chicago: Francine “Frankie” Russo is irritated when her young co-worker calls at 5:00 am for a video-chat and catches her in only a towel. She’s so annoyed with Tyler Gates that she’s barely paying attention when two men confront him on the street. In a matter of seconds, Frankie witnesses Tyler’s murder. Then the killers pick up the phone. And suddenly, they know what Frankie looks like, who she is, where she works and lives. She knows absolutely nothing about them. But one thing’s for certain—they’re coming for her next.
—WHEN THE STORM HITS—
Frankie calls the only people she knows can help: her childhood friend, Hannah Washington and Hannah’s business partner, Ryder Creed. Hannah tells her to “come on home,” and she arranges a meeting for Frankie to meet with FBI agent Maggie O’Dell.
Meanwhile in the Florida Panhandle: Creed’s sister, Brodie is dealing with her own storm. She’s realizing that after sixteen years of captivity, surviving was only the first step.
With the killers hot on her trail, Frankie races to meet Maggie. But she has no idea that she’s driving straight into the grasp of another killer—a monster storm system. She and Maggie will need Ryder and Jason’s help, but no one is safe from the devastation. And by the time the sky clears, none of them will ever be the same.

Although I have loved all 5 of the Ryder Creed books, by Alex Kava, Desperate Creed has to be my favourite!!! A thrilling page turner that I couldn't put down!
What a wild ride with Ryder Creed and his scent dog, Grace! From page 1, the story grips you and keeps your attention to the end! From watching on video chat and seeing a colleague murdered, to being chased/followed into Tornado Alley, then experiencing a tornado up front and personal! What do you when a tornado (or several) are in your path? Have never been in one and have only seen them on TV! Can't imagine the terror of being in it's path/sight!
For those that like the Ryder Creed series, you are going to love this addition.

If you haven't read one of the Creed books, let me catch you up. Veteran Ryder Creed and his business partner Hannah Washington own and operate a K-9 training facility of rescue dogs in Florida. They work search and rescue operations. Jason is one of their dog trainers and handlers. He came back from Afghanistan with only one arm and has found a home there. Ryder's sister Brodie was kidnapped and held prisoner for 16 years and she was recently found and returned to live with Ryder.
In Chicago, the story starts out with a video chat call at 5am with Frankie Russo and her co-worker at the ad agency, Tyler. Tyler is out walking and chatting about cancer causing agents in food and how this relates to their next advertising campaign. Frankie hears gunshots and sees the killer's face. Of course, he sees her too.
Turns out Frankie is friends with Hannah and she calls her for help when the killers start to track her. Hannah involves FBI agent Maggie O'Dell and they agree to meet each other in Alabama. Meanwhile, Ryder and Jason have gone to Alabama to assist with the rescue operation due to massive tornadoes.
You don't have to read these stories in order because Kava is very good about summarizing all the relationships at the start of each book. However, I recommend you start at the beginning to get a vested interest in all the great characters. In this story, Kava has done her homework on tornadoes. The descriptions of the tornadoes were awesome and scary. She has captured the destruction. The chapters filled in by the meteorologists and storm chasers were suspenseful. I love this series! I always feel good after I finish one of these books!
They might be corny and take themselves too seriously but I do enjoy a good storm chaser novel. K-9 handler Ryder Creed and FBI agent Maggie O’Dell are good value. Love this series.
No 5 in the series, but unfortunately not my fav. Not sure why, with the same characters and danger round the corner for them, that everyone comes out of, in the decent storylines.
Whewwww!!! Holy moly just WOW! What an absolutely THRILLING AND FANTASTIC story! Already, I’m a big Kava fan-girl - she could write the Declaration of Independence again & i would read it, but this book gave me heartburn & jagged nails! MUST READ-even if you’re not familiar with the author or series, it will not be a disappointment! Best five star thriller I have CONSUMED in a while! Well done, #AlexKava, well done indeed. Now, hurry up with your next book, kthxbai ;-) #VIR
From page 1, Kava grabbed my attention and sucked me in like a tornado. Every one of her books has been this way for me and DESPERATE CREED is no exception. Page by page, I read on helplessly as she threw Ryder, Maggie, Jason, Scout, and Grace into horrific situations.
Loved seeing Brodie continue to come into focus for us and seriously just want to hug Hannah as she manages to glue everyone back together.
My absolute favorite part was reading this: "coming soon is HIDDEN CREED (Ryder Creed Book 6) that continues exploring the Creed family dynamics while Ryder and Grace chase a killer that takes them out of their comfort zone." --- because I'm sad that the book is over every time I finish a Kava book.
Now I'm on pins and needles . . . waiting for that next release date!
I know you technically shouldn't start a series in the middle but it's a solid no.
There were editing mistakes everywhere, a random character that's not even relevant in the slightest to the storyline, and a whole load of boring chapters about Creed's sister.
Maggie (Supposedly Creed's love interest) and Creed kept dancing around each other like kids who are too scared to tell their crush they like them. YOU'RE LITERALLY LIKE 30. PLEASE.
I just didn't like this book. I didn't care about the characters. I didn't care about the storyline. I didn't even finish it.
I can't tell if it's the author or the genre but I felt like I was slogging my way through this book.
Not even the dogs made it more exciting. For a thriller it was slow and there weren't really any murders or anything that needed any investigating.
I really like this series (both Maggie and Creed's respectively), but really how many times can they wind up in the middle of a disaster almost dead and still come out basically unscathed? I felt no concern for them this time around.
Plot wise, not much happened. The mystery was extremely underdeveloped and they spent approximately 1 chapter actively investigating it. The rest was all disaster were trapped. And I like Alex kavas writing style, but this one suffered from too many different people/topics to adequately flesh out any of them
OMG, this book...so much going on, I felt like I was tensed up the whole time reading it. From the start when Frankie gets an innocent phone call and her life spins out of control to the storms that pop up morphing into tornadoes. Every time I thought our guys were safe something would happen, my whole body would clench imaging the danger they were in.
By the end of the book I was happy with where everyone was, that they survived, because quite frankly it was iffy for much of the time for many of the characters.
Great series, I always look forward to each new book. The characters are well written and pull you in emotionally right from the start. This one had me on the edge of my seat; not only did the characters have to try and keep someone safe, out the people behind several deaths and make their meanings known, but deal with storms and tornadoes while doing it.
No i przychodzi tom piąty i wracamy do punktu wyjścia.
A gdzie sprawa Frankie?
Alex Kava has never disappointed me, and this book pretty much tops them all for sheer excitement and suspense. I love the Ryder Creed character and here we get a twofer with the limited appearance of FBI agent Maggie O'Dell. The whole section concerning our favorite characters trapped in a series of tornadoes was so tense, I had to stop a couple of times just to breathe. The descriptions were amazing. Kava is a talented writer, and she also taught us the difference between Kansas and Alabama tornadoes. There was an underlying plot, out of Chicago and into the Alabama storms, that was more good reading, scary, and tied in quite well. Of course, the ending was complete with all loose ends tied up - never a cliffhanger with this author! Alex Kava obviously respects her readers. If you think you'd enjoy this series (at its core about scent and rescue dogs and their people) be sure to start with #1, Breaking Creed, which came out in 2015. This one was #5, and I'm ready for the next one!
This 5th installment of the Ryder Creed and Maggie Odell series is pretty much non stop action.Mother Nature and what she can do is a lot more scary than any horror film I’ve ever seen. Ryder and Grace are helping in the aftermath of a tornado. Maggie is heading right into the thick of it helping a longtime friend of Hannahs Ryder’s sister Brodie is dealing with her own demons. Lots going on in this suspenseful page turner. Alex Kava always delivers. The next book can’t come doin enough.
What a wild ride!! There was a LOT going on in this book. Non. Stop. Action.
I love this series. I find the parts about scent dogs utterly FASCINATING. Honestly, if that was all that was written about in these books, I would still be totally hooked! Reading about tornados took me back to when I lived in Kansas and I found that part to be equally fascinating. I felt the weather forecaster's backstory could have been eliminated, as it didn't seem to be a necessary part of the storyline. The parts about Ryder's sister were heartwrenching but also a bit repetitious. The afterword was fascinating and quite scary to read. It seemed like this book could have used a little more editing, as there were a few misspelled/incorrect words used. There weren't many but they were a bit jarring.
It was a joy to read about the characters I have grown to love: Ryder, Hannah, Jason and, of course, Grace! I love, love, love that sweet little dog!! I hope the next book will be more about the dogs.
The action in this book was great. I love to escape into a book and be transported away from my everyday life. Alex Kava has a way of doing just that while keeping you in the real world. She has characters with depth and rescue dogs who make you crave to make your canine best friend a hero too. I also love Alex Kava’s notes at the end of her books that give you some insight into the topic she chose.
Number 5 in the Ryder Creed series, this one was a thriller combining weather disasters, scent dogs, love interests, and pursuing a murderer. Great insights into a special breed of working dogs and their handlers. Consequently got an extra star just because it’s a great novel with dogs! Strong characters with great backstories, Alex Kava did a masterful job keeping the story thrilling from start to finish. Maggie O’Dell is another example of an excellent role model and example of strong female leads. Number of typos or wrong word choice was somewhat distracting (rush to publish means less attention to editing?) all in all, a nice distraction for the commute.
It was good. I enjoyed the recurring characters and learning more about Brodie. I like books that have more than one person’s view. Since there was a lot going on in the book each story was not developed very deeply. There was Bodie There was Frankie and being chased Maggie and her story Creed The weather forecaster the Bad guys They all come together in the end but there were a lot of threads I did enjoy it I have read all the Creed books --
Desperate Creed is the Fifth installment in author Alex Kava's Ryder Creed series. The story picks up 5 months after Ryder found his sister Brodie alive after 16 years of missing and presumed dead. The story's key characters are:
Ryder Creed is an ex-marine now running K9 Crimescents along with his partner Hannah Washington. They train mostly unwanted dogs such as sniffer dogs for anything from drugs to cadavers to sniffing out bird flu and life threatening ailments. Grace is a little Jack Russell terrier who often times steals the show.
As Ryder's sister Brodie becomes more at home learning to deal with her PTSD, he is called away to the aftermath of deadly tornadoes in Southern Alabama. Colleagues are also dealing with the murder of two men who Frankie Russo, a friend of Hannah Washington, worked with. They had hacked into the business of Carson Foods, and discovered information about the coverup of breakfast bars, that contained Glyphosate. While Frankie is on the phone with Tyler, he is killed, and she sees the killers. She flees Chicago to the eye of the tornadoes, with the killers following.
There are more than 17 tornadoes in one day, and Maggie O'dell along with Frankie who got as far as Montgomery, are trapped with more than ten others in the basement of Southern Blessings Restaurant, which was entirely wiped out. What they don't know is that one of the killers in the basement with them, and there is an eighteen-wheeler on top of the basement door. Frankie had been trapped under the beam holding up the ceiling, and while they got her out she is hurt.
The killer still milling around the site, thinking that the drums that have fallen out of the truck are flammable, he tries to start a fire, which would kill his colleague. Which causes "Gus", August Braxton to decide to kill his colleague and take off, not hurting Frankie, once they are rescued, and she is in the hospital.
There is a minimum of rescue work by Ryder and Grace, and Jason and Scout. Grace does show her skills, however, when she finds a baby, still in his carseat, 300 yards from the car, in which the father has been killed brutally. The mother had been paying for gas and had escaped the car being pulled into the tornado, but was hurt, which Ryder realizes when he sees the gas cap unscrewed on what is remaining of the car.
A satisfying read, with the destruction that tornadoes can wreak on property and the body graphically described. The CEO of Carson Foods, government officials, and an FBI administrator, who loved to be close to the political resigned.

I have journeyed through all of Alex Kava’s books - another great read that keeps you guessing and wanting to read on. Extra enjoyment with the added storm storyline interwoven into the book.
On the edge of your seat stuff. Kava describes being in the eye of a tornado so well you feel yourself holding your breath and hope you finish reading about it so you can breathe again. This on top of two professional assassins searching for someone who has seen them execute a friend of hers. So it is a story of two chases with Ryder Creed and his dog Grace caught in the middle having to help with search and rescue. I could not put it down and although it was an ebook, which I don’t enjoy reading compared to the real thing, this story helped distract me from my usual misgivings. Can’t wait to read the next book.
3.5 + rounded up. As others has said, not their favorite. This Summary/Review was copied from other sources and is used only as a reminder of what the book was about for my personal interest. This 2019 series entry by author Alex Kava improves on the last entry, Lost Creed (2018), but it suffers from a lack of focus. The series purports to feature Ryder Creed and subplots featuring his trainer, his partner, his sister, etc. would be reasonable. It is not reasonable to mangle every plotline to include FBI agent Maggie O'Dell. As she points out, she's in Virginia and he's in Florida. They both have careers calling for travel, but to have the travel intersect so often is unreasonable if they both have series. The Chicago sub plot did not get developed and the weatherman subplot was superfluous.

2.5 stars Honestly it was kind of a nothing book. There was no real mystery or crime to solve. There was a bunch of POV chapters from a random character that had nothing to do with anyone and added nothing to the story. There was only a single page of interaction between Maggie& Creed and nothing of any note happened.
