Cheyenne's Shadow is more of a western than a Native American story, but the hero is a full-bloodied Native American, so for all you fans of this genre you will love this one. Only thing is that in this story Johnny Cheyenne starts out as a gunslinger and eventually turns his hand at ranching. Not a bad cowboy by any means, as it turns out. Well, our hero can do anything he puts his mind to, as it were. Yes, even doctoring! This one is an all-round character that I loved.
Etta Hollister is our heroine, a strong spitfire who runs the Flying H ranch; a little insecure at times but a very likeable young girl. Only thing about her I didn't like was that she was more of a toughie than a lady, but maybe that's to be expected considering that she's contending with villains who threaten her livelihood at every turn and who are sabotaging her interests in devious ways. She's a cowboy through and through.
The villains are as mean as the key characters are full of fire and daring spirit. And in the end every one of them gets their comeuppance, which suits me just fine! And let us not forget good old Whitey, a secondary character who helps Etta run the ranch. I did so like this one as well.
Deborah Camp never fails to create characters that are realistic and solid. This is one of the reasons why I so enjoy her novels. If her story had to fall flat, you can be sure that her characters would still inject all the spice you need for a good read; that's how strong they are. Luckily for us, it doesn't. The plot is fast-paced and with many twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages. This is one enjoyable read.

Review:
"Cheyenne's Shadow" by Deborah Camp was a very good read that kept you interested. This was one beautiful story told and with such wonderful fantastic characters. This is my first novel by this author and I am sure it will not be the last. I really enjoyed the mystery and twist that were all over this story featuring Etta Hollister and Johnny Cheyenne. You can tell there was some good research done by this author to give us a wonderful well written story. The descriptions of the area characters were very well developed, so real and alive...making you feel like you are their in the story. Here are a few that made this read a good read....Etta owner of the Flying H Ranch, Johnny Cheyenne, Whitey, Hank,Andy, Brickman, Dan and Hester Pitch, Gerald Powell, Roy's father; Clarence Allred, the owner of the general store, Jessup, the Blacksmith, Lester Craw, the sheriff, Big Joe Simpson, the cattle broker, to Barney Timmons, a man who used to work for Brickman...to name a few...all made this read a captivating read. Even though I found "Cheyenne's Shadow" was somewhat predictable it was still a good read. In the end will Etta finally listen to Johnny.. and what does he has to say to her? What about this partnership? Now, this is the time I will say you must pick up this good read to see how Ms. Camp delivers it all to the reader. Be ready for a interesting ending that will indeed bring it all together.
This is the tale of a halfbred gunslinger and the daughter of a deceased ranch owner. Etta’s brother was in jail for robbery and her ranch was in serious trouble. Cheyenne is called out and kills a neighbor of Etta’s brother and in the gun fight his gun hand is grazed with a bullet causes his hand to be stuff and hardly usable. He decides to help Etta and her two ranch hands with their cattle round up. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.
Reading while camping is one of my favorite pastimes and I couldn’t have chosen a better book. Ranching, cattle, gunfights and good people, make up this book. Etta works to keep her ranch; mixed blood injured gunman helps her; and, Whitey along with a homeless black kid, live and work every day for the Flying H Ranch. It’s a great story-line and I loved it. Thanks to the author for great writing.
What a wonderful book. I love the head strong heroine in this book, so full of spitfire, but love always finds a way to tame even the most head strong.
Cheyenne's Shadow by Deborah Camp is book Three of the series. A gunfighter and a woman rancher fight injustice and fall in love. A very spicy romance.
This has long been one of my all time favorite western romances, but it has been years since I last reread it. I have to say, this was a great reread. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to end. What I hadn’t remembered about it was how brilliant the dialogue is in this book. It’s so colloquial and sassy – I loved it. I wanted to just write half of it down to remember for later, because sometimes it was just downright clever. I think probably my favourite thing about it, and there were a lot of good things about this book.
Another great thing was the treatment of minority characters – Johnny Cheyenne as a part American Indian, and Andy as a POC. One of the first things about this book that really struck me about the heroine was that she didn’t carry the prevalent prejudices of the day, she judged people on their own merits.
Another thing that I really liked was that we got to explore a bit of Johnny’s heritage, and it felt like it was treated well and with honor.
Westerns can be a bit hit and miss with how author’s treat some of the prevailing attitudes of the day towards POC, American Indians and women but I thought DC did a really great job with making these attitudes as unfavourable and unworthy of good people.
There was great passion between Johnny and Etta, and I loved that each of these characters stayed true to themselves throughout the book, and through getting to know each other revealed different aspects of their personalities.
Truly, one of the best westerns that I’ve ever read, particularly in characters and in dialogue. The story wasn’t anything super complicated, but it didn’t need to be when everything around it was done so very well.
Highly highly recommended.

Thoroughly Captivating Western Romance! Deborah Camp has a knack for creating imperfect and emotionally scarred characters that make you want to hug and comfort them on one page and slap them upside their stubborn heads on the next page. The passionate tug of war between Johnny Cheyenne and Etta along with the exciting detaling of gunfights, a cattle drive, and an emotionally devestating house fire all add up to an exceptional story by an extraordinary storyteller. I hated to see this one end!
Ella had been mistreated by one man at a young age trying to get her land.Johnny comes into her life. There is passion and like between them.Great story lots of ins and out to this book.Great reading.
