Vince Walker is looking forward to the beginning of the summer and a visit from his son Cy. But while picking up his son at the Indianapolis airport, the country is thrust into nuclear warfare with the detonation of multiple EMPs.
With fires burning out of control and the loss of the electrical grid, the entire country is thrown into chaos. Vince and his son, Cy, are forced to fight for their lives and escape the city as the world they once knew crumbles around them.
As they try to return to their hometown of Cloverdale, Indiana, or what’s left of it, they struggle to accept their new environment. Forced to come to terms with the harsh reality of the nuclear attack, they press on through what is quickly becoming a post apocalyptic wasteland.
Challenged with the absence of utilities and emergency services, they must save who and what they can before it’s too late.
Having read and enjoyed this author's "Dark Road" series and, in particular, liking the people of Cloverdale there, I was excited to read this book. Vince is a character that is easy to like very quickly. He is a decent man who is very capable and thoughtful. Whereas the "Dark Road" main characters were in a remote area when the EMPs were detonated, the characters in this novel are much closer to the event. However, it left me confused as to whether it was an actual nuclear bomb attack or the High EMP that Vince insisted. A high detonation EMP would not cause blast damage, fires nor would there be a visible mushroom cloud. Cloverdale is 41 miles from Indianapolis but the town is nearly destroyed by the fire from the effect? This did not make sense if it was an EMP. If it was a true nuclear detonation, the characters didn't seem terribly concerned about radiation, or at least not enough to find a good shelter to wait it out. I enjoyed the story because of the strength of the characters, but the description of what was happening is quite inaccurate for a true high altitude EMP and is central to the story.
The story is very sketchy. Characters not well developed. Plot not developed. I have no idea who these people are and there was nothing to make me want to find out.
A very good read, I really enjoyed it. There are a few characters that I don't really know yet, Vince seems to be in charge and I'm not sure if I like him yet. It's definitely worth reading.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest! It was a great book! This is another post-apocalyptic survival series by this author. it reminds me of "Walking Dead." Loved the show! This is Vince and his son Cy journey into this post-apocalyptic world. Loved the characters + the storytelling! It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book! I can't wait for the next book in this series.
Why would you immediately send yourself, your son, and and older couple out into a town that is burning down around you, before your needs of theirs? Putting phenomenon danger!!! Then you fight to keep an auto garage and hotel viable that sits just off the exit ramp of a busy interstate??? Are you hoping for a fight?? Obviously Vince is a very short sighted person. What crazier, is that everyone goes along with it. I wouldn't love next to an interstate in the best of times!! Very disappointed in this story. Maybe it's just be warning of what not to do. It's like watching a zombie flick where the couple walks through a cemetery thinking it's the safest place to be. It's almost laughable.
Despite being a story about just the thing the main story line sorely lacked, ergo the efforts of keeping society together, i didn´t enjoy this book. The side effects of the EMP seemed too harsh for my taste as they killed an excessively amount in this town. I found it strange that an organised group of out-of-town looters would appear on day 1, miraculously possessing four plus vehicles that survived the EMP strikes.
I don't understand what he's thinking staying by businesses. They needed to go to Mary's or his house after emptying the garage. Mary has food after all. Take everything you can get hold of and go! Don't mess with the looters. One of them is already dead! Don't take a chance on losing anyone else. Stupid I just want to shake Vince! I will continue the series since I like Bruno Miller
This is the first book in a mini-series. As it is post-apocalyptic in nature, there is some violence.
Vince Walker, known as Major to many in his small town, is happy that his grown son wants to spend time with him. The visit is far from what either of them imagined as the world they knew literally comes crashing down around them.
I really enjoyed seeing the different perspectives of the main characters. It made me realize that you can prepare for some things and others are thrust upon you. It's how you respond that can make the difference.
I recently discovered this author and am glad I did. His writing and storylines are refreshing. Yes it’s an apocalyptic story but some authors have so much blood, death and violence that I just don’t enjoy reading them. The characters are interesting and the storyline intriguing and possible. Each person has their own story and it’s great to read about people who feel real. My only criticism,as I had with his last series, is the length of his books. Much too short. I pay for kindle unlimited so the books are “free”. I very likely wouldn’t buy them all otherwise as is only a few hours of entertainment per book
.......excellent series by Bruno Miller!!! Loads of ACTION and both the storyline and characters are very realistic!!! One word of caution though.... Read this series before you read The Dark Road series, also by B. Miller!!! It won't REALLY mess the stories up, but you get a better understanding if you read this one first. A lot of the characters in this series also show up in The Dark Road series. I know because I made the mistake of reading 📚 them the wrong way. REGARDLESS, I still enjoyed both tremendously !!!!
Vince Walker was picking his son Cy up from the Indianapolis airport when the enclosed glass walkway when it began to shake. Father and son hurried to their car and hurriedly left the airport as planes began to fall from the sky, buildings caught fire and newer cars stopped running and caught fire. On their way back to Cloverdale Indiana they came across their cousins and their daughter. When arriving at Cloverdale they found the same damage and five people alive. A pack of bad men arrive to pillage the town and a fight ensues. I look forward to reading book 2 in this series.
I gave a two star not because it wasn't a good book. I gave two star because the author didn't research before writing about guns. Those that are readers hate mistakes especially mistakes that come from ignorance. An AR type rifle is NOT an assault rifle. There is no such thing as an assault rifle. One sentence, "an assault rifle or AR15" ruined the believability of the book. The character was a hunter, ex serviceman but did not know AR does not stand for assault rifle. Damn authors do better.
Impact: Cloverdale book 1, is an accompanying series to go along with Bruno Miller's eponymous Dark Road post-EMP survival series. Set in Cloverdale, Indiana, it focuses on a different group of survivors and circumstances, though they share a universe. The writing is of the excellent quality one should expect from Miller with a good plot, lightning fast pacing, believable characters and vivid descriptions of environments and action sequences. 5/5 stars, highly recommended for fans of post-EMP survival thrillers!
I bought this book with high hopes after enjoying the previous series by the author, but sadly I'm feeling a little bit let down after finishing the book. There is not anything I can put my finger on but it just didn't enjoy the story, and for some reason I couldn't identity with the characters and for me that is a big part of every book that I read. If I don't find the characters interesting the nine times out of ten I struggle with the book.
Vince is a retired military officer on his way to met his grown son at the airport. When he and son Cy are at the airport, the unthinkable happens. Vince and By do make their way back to Cloverdale but not without incidents. This post apocalyptic novel is the beginning of anew series by this author and can be read as a standalone. A novel about every day people surfing under unusual circumstances.
So far as I know, no one has been through more than a simulated EMP. No one knows what will happen for sure. To me, though, Bruno Miller's stories relate as closely to factual as is possible. Cloverdale is a small town that has almost burned to the ground and they are having to deal with looters and murderers. It's definitely worth reading. I recommend it without reservation.
The author really missed the mark on so many things. I will not list the things that are wrong. There are both major and minor errors that deal with the story being told. However, the story moved fast and was grammatically correct.
If you are looking for a decent, action packed novel based on an apocryphal event, I wouldn't recommend this particular book. There are more than several I consider better.
I’ve been a fan of Bruno Miller for a while now. This one does not disappoint, and it’s always enjoyable to start a new series. Definitely makes you think about the what ifs… If you haven’t read any of his books, I would highly recommend checking them out. The only caveat is that you may end up with sleepless nights not wanting to put the book down before you finish. In my world that is a big win—Enjoy.
A great start to a new series. Mr. Miller consistently tells a great story. He obviously is passionate about his topic and puts q great deal of research into each book. Another plus, he either pays close attention to spelling and grammar (or has a heck of a proofreader, lol).
I think that some day, this story line will be come our life. I hope not ,but at the way we are killing each other. I would not be surprised . I like the story line. I like to think that we as americans will get up after being attacked and fine away to handle what is throwed at them. I hope these books keeps on being out there , teaching us how its done
When emps hit the United States. The world is forced to survive the best way it can. The small group that survive must come together and form a team to hold off the people who are trying to take everything from them. I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a good book
I Purchased it from Amazon for $2.99 on July 16, 2023. EOTWAWKI. A bit preachy about politics --pushing an independent theme of destruction and near anarchy. A 4-hour read, kept falling asleep at the end during political statements ... Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. Not much common sense in the story, where were all the townspeople running for their lives from the fire???
3.5 stars... my wife has saturated me wife worries of an EMP attack, and after a while the stories start to overlap one another. The characters here are on the on their initial day after the attack. Nobody knows much of anything, other than everything is burning and the rule of law (probably) has been lost. I'll probably check out the rest of the series, we'll see how it goes.
This was interesting to read, more realistic than most. It actually made me think about today's political chaos and how regular American citizens would behave. Looking forward to next book.
Bruno you have a way that is what I really enjoy about your books. I know I will have to wait for the next book so please don't take to long. I will let other people know about you and your books. Thank you.
Impact: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival series (Cloverdale). As usual Bruno Miller has done a fantastic job in keeping the reader entertained. He captured the readers attention immediately and kept it. Editing was excellent. A good book
Packed full of action from beginning to end. EMP's have hit the United States chaos, fires, fears and the unknown are rampant with the survivors. Trying to stay alive is a struggle. Excited to read more
I wasn't sure about this story but then he hooked me ..I know that you have to work your characters in to the story but some of seemed to me were forced into a story line
Good Start for a good story. Looking forward to the next installment. Characters are just normal people in a bad situation and struggling to figure out what to do so to survive.
Vince Walker has just picked up his son Cy at the airport, looking forward to spending some quality time together, when the EMP hits. Barely getting away, they make their way back to their hometown, meeting other survivors on the way. Follow their story as they fight to survive.
