He also experimented throughout his writing life. This collection of stories illustrates this compulsion. He is the opposite of predictable though unpredictable does not encompass him, he is far, far beyond that.
I've reviewed two of his longer fiction works in Goodreads, Latro in the Mist and the incomparable New Sun series, under Shadow and Claw. Normally I'm a great fan of short stories but to me his longer fiction is far superior, universes that invoke the childhood awe at the marvel of storytelling.
One reason for the low rating is the experimentation mentioned. Really, any one of Gardner Dozois's annual collections has far less breadth of styles and they are three or four times longer. And at times the stories of Wolfe grate and at times they are simply not good enough.
Beyond that, I ask myself why I'm going to re-read a couple of the stories and then give the book away? I've concluded that some take me to the types of places I no longer want to visit and introduce me to "people" I would turn from in everyday life. Wolfe has a insatiable attraction to the unsavory and the horrible, and some of these stories revel in both.
Nevertheless, a great, great writer, actually awe-inspiring: how could someone conjure such stuff into existence, write this way?!! I can't wait to re-read the novels mentioned above and others I've not read.
