About the author

M. Mukundan(Malayalam: എം. മുകുന്ദൻ) is one of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature. He was born on 10 September 1942 at Mayyazhi in Mahe, a one-time French territory in Kerala. He served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi from October 2006 until March 2010.
Mukundan is known in Kerala as 'Mayyazhiyude Kathakaaran' (The story-teller of Mayyazhi). His native village of Mayyazhi figures in his early works: 'Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil', 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal', 'Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma' and 'Lesli Achante Kadangal'.
His first literary work was a short story published in 1961. Mukundan has so far published 12 novels and ten collections of short stories. Mukundan's latest four novels 'Adithyanum Radhayum Mattu Chilarum', 'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha','Kesavante Vilapangal' and 'Nritham ' carries a change in structure and approach.
'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha' reveals how Vasundhara, an actress has been insulted in the course of acting due to some unexpected situations. It proclaims the postmodern message that martyrs are created not only through ideologies, but through art also.
'Kesavante Vilapangal' one of his most recent works tells the story of a writer Kesavan who writes a novel on a child named Appukkuttan who grows under the influence of E. M. S. Namboodiripad. 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal' bagged the Kendra Sahithya Academy award and NV Prize. 'Ee Lokam Athiloru Manushyan' bagged the Kerala Sahitya Academy award. Daivathinte Vikrithikal has been translated into English and published By Penguin Books India.
In 2008, Mukundan's magnum opus Mayyazhi Puzhayude Theerangalil fetched him the award for the best novel published in the last 25 years. Three of his novels were made into feature films in Malayalam . Mukundan wrote the script and one of them bagged a state film award.
Mukundan's latest novel is "Pravasam" (sojourn in non-native land) and tells the story of a Malayali whose journeys carry him around the world.
The French government conferred on him the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1998 for his contribution to literature.

പതിനഞ്ചു വർഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഈ പുസ്തകം വീണ്ടും വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ അന്നത്തെ ഹൈസ്കൂൾ പയ്യനിൽ നിന്നും ഞാൻ എത്രത്തോളം മാറിപോയെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു.
വരികൾക്കിടയിൽ ഒളിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന രാഷ്ട്രീയം വായിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ അന്നത്തെ നിഷ്കളങ്കനായ കളിമ്പക്കാരന് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല.

'കേശവന്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾക്ക്' ഇ. എം. സിന്റെ ചിത്രത്തിനെക്കാളും യോജിക്കുന്ന കവർചിത്രത്തിന് സാധ്യത ഉണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു.

Written as a story within a story, the book recreates the internal and external chaos involved in the process of Kesavan's writing, as he pens his book, "Appukkuttante Vilapangal'. The story deals with the life and death of Kesavan as well as with the life and obsessions of the protagonist of Kesavan's book, the boy called Appukkuttan, who deifies E. M. S. Namboodiripad, under whose portrait's gaze he slept and woke as a child. The narrative travels back and forth between Kesavan and Appukkuttan.
Mukundan has created a deeply fascinating novel, which is serious and humorous at once. A good book.

ಎರಡೂ ಹೌದು ಮತ್ತು ಅಲ್ಲ.
ಅವನೊಬ್ಬ ಕ್ಲರ್ಕ್. ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬರೆಯಲೆಂದು ರಜೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನ ಕತಾನಾಯಕ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಿಂದಲೇ ಕಮ್ಯುನಿಸ್ಟ್. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಇಎಮ್ ನಂಬೂದಿರಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಜೀವ. ಅವನು ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಅವನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನವರ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳು ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ತನ್ನ ಸೈದ್ಧಾಂತಿಕ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಒಬ್ಬ ಕ್ರಿಯೇಟಿವ್ ಬರಹಗಾರ ಎದುರಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ‌.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಅಂತ್ಯ ನನಗೆ ಹಿಡಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ.

എം.മുകുന്ദൻ്റേതായി ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്ന നാലാമത്തെ നോവലാണ് "കേശവൻ്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ". ക്ലാർക്കും നോവലിസ്റ്റുമായ കേശവൻ്റെ ജീവിതവും കേശവനെഴുതുന്ന അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ എന്ന നോവലും ചേർന്നതാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. നോവലിനുള്ളിലെ നോവൽ വായന വേറിട്ടൊരു അനുഭവമായിരുന്നു.

സർക്കാൻ ഓഫീസിൽ ക്ലാർക്കായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന, ഇടക്കൊക്കെ എഴുതുന്ന കേശവൻ, അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ എന്ന നോവൽ എഴുതുന്നതും അതെഴുതുമ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന സംഘർഷങ്ങളുമാണ് നോവലിൻ്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. തൊട്ടിലിൽ കിടന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഇ.എം.എസിൻ്റെ ഫോട്ടോ കണ്ടു വളരുന്ന അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ കാലക്രമേണ ഇ.എം.എസിൻ്റെ ആരാധകനാവുന്നു. അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ ഇടതുപക്ഷ അനുഭാവിയായ ആമൻ മാസ്റ്റർ അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ്റെ സ്കൂളിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകനായി ജോലിയിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നു. പിന്നീടങ്ങോട്ട് അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ്റെ വളർച്ചയിൽ ആമൻസാർ നിർണായകമായൊരു പങ്കാണ് വഹിക്കുന്നത്. അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ ഒരു കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റാവുന്നതും ഒരാളെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തി ജയിലിൽ പോകുന്നിടത്ത് കേശവൻ്റെ നോവൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നു.

ഈ നോവൽ കേശവന് പലതും നേടിക്കൊടുത്തെങ്കിലും കഥാപാത്രവും എഴുത്തുകാരനും ഒന്നായിത്തീരുന്നിടത്താണ് കേശവൻ്റെ പരാജയം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. നോവൽ വായിച്ച് സാക്ഷാൽ ഇ.എം.എസ് തന്നെ കേശവൻ്റെ വീട്ടിൽ വന്നപ്പോൾ അത് യഥാർത്ഥ ഇ.എം.എസാണോ തൻ്റെ കഥയിലെ കഥാപാത്രമായ ഇ.എം.എസാണോ എന്ന് വേർതിരിച്ചറിയാൻ പോലും പറ്റാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് കേശവൻ എത്തിപ്പെടുകയാണ്.

ഒട്ടും മുഷിച്ചിലില്ലാതെ വളരെ പെട്ടെന്നുതന്നെ വായിച്ചുതീർക്കാവുന്നൊരു നോവലാണ് കേശവൻ്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ.

The line between the writer and 'the person' in the writer is a blurred one. This novel examines how both these identities influence each other. To achieve this it uses the backdrop of a writer whose latest work is based on a boy, who from his birth is influenced by EMS Namboothiripad. The lives of the writer and his creation starts to resemble each other. The metafictional devices and the critique of the left movement which would have been reduced to poorly academic discourses is saved by the strong emotional core of the work.

തൊട്ടിലിൽ കിടക്കുന്ന കാലം തൊട്ട് ചുവരിലെ ഇ.എം.എസ്സിന്റെ ചിത്രം നോക്കി ചിരിച്ചുകിടന്നൊരു കുട്ടി. തൊട്ടിലിന്റെ സ്ഥാനമൊന്നു മാറിയാൽ, ഇ.എം.എസ്സിന്റെ ചിത്രം കൺവെട്ടത്തുനിന്നും മറഞ്ഞാൽ ഉടൻ കരയുന്നൊരു കുട്ടി. അച്ഛൻ അനന്തകൃഷ്ണൻ അവനെ അപ്പു എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു. അമ്മ ശ്രീദേവി കുട്ടനെന്നും. നാട്ടുകാർ അവനെ അപ്പുക്കുട്ടനെന്നു വിളിച്ചു. ശ്രീദേവിയുടെ മരണശേഷം മുൻ നക്സലൈറ്റും പിന്നീട് തികഞ്ഞ ദൈവവിശ്വാസിയുമായ അനന്തകൃഷ്ണൻ മുഴുവൻ സമയവും മകനെ പാടുപെട്ട് വളർത്തുന്നതിനായി നീക്കിവെച്ചു. ഇ.എം.എസ്സിനോടുള്ള മകന്റെ ആരാധന ഒരിക്കലും അവനെയൊരു കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് ആക്കല്ലേ എന്ന പ്രാർത്ഥനയോടുകൂടി ജീവിക്കുന്ന അനന്തകൃഷ്ണന്റെ എല്ലാ പ്രതീക്ഷകളും തെറ്റിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ ഒരു തികഞ്ഞ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് അനുഭാവിയാകാനുള്ള പാതയിലാണ്. അതിന് അവനു താങ്ങും തണലുമായി അവന്റെ സ്കൂളിലെ ആമൻ സാറും. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ അപ്പുക്കുട്ടനും ഇ.എം.എസ്സും പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലായി വരുന്ന അപ്പുക്കുട്ടന്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ എന്ന നോവലിന്റെ രചനയിലാണ് പ്രസിദ്ധ നോവലിസ്റ്റ് കേശവൻ. കേശവന്റെ കഥാപാത്രമായ അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ വളരുന്നതോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ കഥാകൃത്ത് കേശവനും ചുറ്റും പലരീതിയിലുള്ള കുടുംബ, രാഷ്ട്രീയ, സുഹൃദ് വലയങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ഏറെ സമ്മർദ്ദങ്ങളും വളരുകയാണ്. അവസാനം കഥാപാത്രവും കഥാകാരനും ഒന്നായിത്തീരുകയാണോ?

കഥക്കുള്ളിലെ കഥ എന്ന രീതിയിൽ എം. മുകുന്ദൻ എഴുതിയ പ്രശസ്ത നോവലാണ് 2003 ലെ വയലാർ അവാർഡ് നേടിയ കേശവന്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ. ഏറെക്കാലം വാങ്ങാതെ വെച്ച് ഈയിടെയാണ് ഞാൻ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ചാം പതിപ്പ് കൈക്കലാക്കിയത്. എനിക്ക് ഇതൊരു ശരാശരി നോവൽ ആയാണ് തോന്നിയത്.

നോവലിന് അകത്തൊരു നോവൽ. കേശവന്റെ ജീവിതവും കേശവൻ എഴുതുന്ന അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ വിലാപങ്ങൾ എന്ന നോവലും ചേർന്നതാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. സർക്കാർ ഓഫീസിൽ ക്ലാർക്കായി ജോലി നോക്കുന്ന കേശവൻ അപ്പുക്കുട്ടന്റെ വിലാപങ്ങൾ എന്ന നോവൽ എഴുതുന്നതും അതിനെ അനുബന്ധിച്ചുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങളുമാണ് ഇതിൽ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുന്നത്.

അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ ഇഎംഎസിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോ കണ്ടാണ് വളരുന്നത്. കൂടാതെ സ്കൂളിൽ പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ ���ത്തുന്ന ആമൻ മാഷ് ഒരു ഇടതുപക്ഷ അനുഭാവി കൂടിയായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റായ അപ്പുക്കുട്ടൻ ഒരാളെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തി ജയിലിൽ പോകുന്നു. പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ഇടയ്ക്കുവെച്ച് ഇഎംഎസ് നേയും നാരായണഗുരുവിനേയും കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്ന കേശവൻ അത് സത്യമാണോ മിഥ്യയാണോ എന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയാനാവാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു.

The story is about an author who's writing a novel while dealing with real life. I'm not a big fan of Malayalam lit, but I just tried this one for the sake of exploring different genres and authors. Not an interesting read for teens.

As a person interested in politics and the political setup of India it is only natural that I love reading books on politics. Much of the stuff written on/about politics is non-fiction and is written by eminent politicians or historians . However, political fiction is also fantastic to read. Jefferey Archer’s “First among equals” is the best book when it comes to political fiction for me.

The other day I was just typing political fiction in Flipkart and was searching for books and then this book, Kesavan’s lamentations came up. I was just curios on what it would be, read the intro of the book written over there and ordered it.

This book set up in the steamy political backdrop of Kerala and has the “EMS” the great socialist-marxist-theorist and the first communist chief minister of an Indian state as the central theme of the book. One of the most fascinating things about this novel is that there are two stories within the novel and the author transports us back and forth across the stories as we progress with the book. When I say two stories it does not mean two parallel stories running,the twist in the tale is that the protagonist (Kesavan) is a writer himself and this book is about the troubles and travails he undergoes while writing a novel with the contemporary Kerala politics in the backdrop. So we travel back and forth between Kesavan and Appukuttan (the protagonist in Kesavan’s book) as we read the book .

The plot is somewhat like this, Kesavan an established author in Kerala, wishes to write a novel about a boy who falls in love with the communist ideology very early in his life. He creates and names the character as Appu Kuttan. How Appu adores EMS from childhood and how this turns out into in to a hero worship as Appu grows into a young boy form is something you ought to read from the book.

As Appu Kuttan grows up, the troubles and travails of Kesavan also grow. The demands from home and family, the demands from the friends that he should be showing the work to them , demands from the left and right groups about the content of the novel etc..

M.Mukundan, the author of the book has done a very good job when it comes to depiction of the characters, I really loved the way the way the characters evolved and the way the plot gets developed. I only wish to differ on the Hindu extremism part of it due to my personal biases and convictions. I was like why should the author touch this topic in the book, nevertheless I am not really aware of the ground realities of Kerala and the reasons that prompted the author to do so. I would have really been very very happy had the book had some other ending.

Nevertheless, Kesavan’s Lamentations is definitely worth a read, it is real good and something different. You would really see and appreciate a good level of maturity in terms of writing, in terms of plot and in terms of characterization Definitely worth a read…

Not bad according to me... He introduced lot many characters some without proper introduction and they just disappeared like that. that's the thing I didn't like.. Also I didn't like the atmosphere creation for the story.
