3.5/5 Stars.
An extra 0.5 stars for the heroine who has been my fav since this family was introduced.
Poppy Tidemore first meets Tristan Poplar, the Earl of Maxwell years ago when she was still relatively young, and instantly falls for his charm and his love for dogs. Of course at that time, she's so young that he sees her as the young, bubbly sibling of his best friend's wife. The seeds for this romance were sowed way back in Prudence Tidemore's book.
Six or seven years later, Poppy is all grown up, and all alone on the marraige mart with no offers and no suitors. By this time Tristan and her have been friends, but she's always had a tendre for him that he perhaps has been ignoring. Because you know, the whole, best friend's wife's sister and all that honor business. Poppy, on a whim, one day proposes a Marraige Pact to Tristan. And they come to an agreement, that he mostly treated with amusement, that if she doesn't find anyone to marry by a certain age they'll marry each other. Of course, you know where this is going.
Suddenly, it's proven that Tristan's mother and father schemed to have him named at the Earl of Maxwell, while hiding and lying about the real Earl. Once this is brought out into the open, Tristan looses his title, his money and basically every single thing that he believed defined him. In short, he was dealing with a pure loss of identity and his place the world. For a change, I actually am okay with how CC dealt with the angst/issues of this hero.
To help deal with the ramifications of his loss of title and etc, Poopy suggests they marry sooner than the pact decided. Of course, she seems to have hidden motives that he doesn't realize at the time and somehow manages to convince Tristan to agree. Of course, by this time Tristan had started to accept and not shirk his feelings towards Poppy. This lead to a marraige of convenience. Something that CC has never done well before, except in this book.
They didn't behave like boors towards each other or have drama for the sake of drama. I liked the way they struggled with the changing feelings and I loved how it came to a conclusion. I particularly loved that Poppy owned up to the fact that she had always secretly hoped this marraige would become more, as she'd always loved Tristan. But she didn't scream, shout and throw a fit when she didn't get that dream. She understood that this wasn't a part of their deal, and it would be wrong to hold him responsible for something he never knew.
While, I get the whole honor before anything storyline that Tristan had going, I'm not particularly fond of it. Perhaps that's why I didn't give it a higher rating.
Overall a fun, enjoyable read with enough feels to get you hooked!
