Born in 1923 in Madisonville, Louisiana, Leah Chase would marry into the Chase restaurant family in nearby New Orleans, but that small geographic move would end up taking her worlds away. Today she is a national-award-winning cook and civic figure. This novel, told in the form of letters to God, shares her inspirational journey with middle-grade readers.
Having lived in New Orleans for 3 years, I never heard of Leah Chase -- after reading this book I now understand what I missed out on. Not only did I miss out on going to her fabulous restaurant but did not get to know her as a person.
Her story is one of rags -- to riches -- via hard work and dedication to her craft. Making a place where all were welcome and that they wanted to return to.
Of course it's from Miss Leah so it's inspired and moving but I'm not sure what YA reader is going for an epistolary memoire written as prayers. Loaning it to my mom next
