Following the bestselling Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same and Going for the Bronze , Sloane Tanen's chickens are back, but this time they've only got one thing on their babies. From epidurals and stretch marks to diaper rash and day care, never before have the joys, trials, and tribulations of having and raising a baby been so ingeniously and truthfully rendered. Hatched! is the one book you need to keep you laughing through your pregnancy and first year of motherhood.
"There are two stars in Tanen's her vermouth-sloshed wit shot through with a neurotic darkness, and miniature chenille chickens toting fingernail-sized Louis Vuitton bags ... [In] her new book, "Hatched! The Big Push From Pregnancy to Motherhood," ...[Tanen] redirected her alkaline humor at her fellow high-end parents. Now the chicks are obsessed with Baby Uggs, Bugaboo Strollers and whether their babies will master Mommy and Me yoga classes." - Los Angeles Times "Sometimes, the best gift for a mom is a laugh. Even the most sleep-deprived mother would be hard-pressed not to break a smile at Sloane Tanen's little toy chicken tableaus in 'Hatched!: The Big Push from Pregnancy to Motherhood.' It takes other authors entire memoirs to skewer some of the same targets that Tanen does in one-page zingers."- Seattle Times "With witty photographs...and droll captions...it's the perfect gift for the pending or new mother. It's certainly good for some big belly laughs."- Daily News "Sloane Tanen's latest work Hatched! is a hilarious, totally original take on the trials and traumas of pregnancy and motherhood. And by the way, Hatched! is THE PERFECT BABY SHOWER GIFT. We highly recommend." - Mommy Track'd "If best-selling author Sloane Tanen's books Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same and Going for the Bronze-both of which are illustrated with chickens-left you chuckling and buying copies for friends, wait until you flip thro
Author of nine books including Bitter With Baggage Seeks Same--being re-released by Bloomsbury January, 2019. New novel There's A Word For That, coming from Little, Brown on April, 2019
This is such a great little book! I laughed out loud at nearly every page. Any woman who has been pregnant, is pregnant, or is about to become pregnant should read this. It's a series of adorably-constructed stills of fake chicks posed in various scenes to demonstrate moments of pregnancy, birth, and life with a small baby. The feel of the writing is similar to that of The Far Side, with wit and subtle humor. This nails almost every feeling I had during those pre-, post-, and during-pregnancy times.
fucking hilarious. of course that is coming from a mommy-to-be, so i feel the pangs of humor/pain ring true. hard to explain, but the author/artist sets up little fake chicken scenes so exquisitely and photographs them. my favorite caption, "Soukie missed California and all her friends from prenatal yoga. Not one of her New York friends showed up to celebrate the ceremonial burial of her placenta. Not one."
Ah...this is the PERFECT confluence of three of my favorite things: pregnancy humor (particularly at moments when I am puking and miserable myself), clever little dioramas, and chickens. Sloane Tanen, by publishing this whole line of stuff (there are others), is doing what I would love to do if I could either clone myself or interrupt the space/time continuum!!
Oh man, this book is wickedly funny. If you're not familiar with Sloane Tannen's work, she is an artist and photographer who puts plastic chickens into compromising positions and makes fun of them. This particular book is near and dear to my heart as she explores the terrors, hilarities, and triumphs of having children.
If you stumble upon this book, it's worth flipping through. I found it quite humorous although I'm guessing those with children will probably find it even funnier. There are a couple of good ones for us non-kids folks, too.
