Sally is a writer, and her books enjoy an excellent reception, attracting a wide following. She receives impulses for the books from many sources: the chance remark of a lecturer, the turning over of a phrase spoken by one of her characters, even the headline in a newspaper. Her friend, Jan, notices that many of Sally’s books appear to parallel events in real life, but she writes that off as coincidence. However, she can no longer do that when she sees a complex scientific paper, written by Jan’s fiancé, an advanced scientist in the field of particle physics, and realizes that one of the characters in a book Sally had written several months ago had presented that document as an exposition of the nature of the particle universe. Sally’s careful discussions with the scientist, based on an intuitive knowledge of his work gained from her books, assist him to find the path to resolving the problems he encounters in building a matter transporter, and he finally makes the breakthrough, following a tip from one of the characters in Sally’s books, to establishing communication with scientists in another dimension. The achievement brings an invitation from the Universal Community to the people of Earth to join the Community, but the President of the United States cannot fit that into his worldview, and he takes action to suppress the new science. Sally, Jan and their new friends must act to save the scientist and to bring the United States into the Universal Community.
