Matt Webber, a commercial fisherman and craft brewer, takes up snowmobiling and recounts his adventures and misadventures learning the ropes. Weber brings readers along on his journey from buying his first snowmobile to exploring the four best snowmobiling regions of Maine―Jackman, the Western Mountains, Eastern Maine, and The County―in a series of rides that see much learning and laughter, and showcase the sheer joy the outdoors in winter. The book includes tips and helpful information on snowmobiling in Maine.
When a friend tells you they have written a book, there can be an awkward moment when they want you to read it and you are hesitant because any disagreement about the book's quality can lead to a dissolution of a friendship. This is not the case. Yes, the author is a good friend of mine. But, no, this is not one of those times when my enthusiasm for the book is half-hearted. Weber has written a wonderful read here. I am a fan of winter, but I have never entered the world of snowmobiling. Yet, now that I have read all these stories and tips and anecdotes, I want to. And isn't that the best quality of a book that sets out to expose an under-covered winter activity (obsession?). I think that, if you enjoy the exploits of a lobsterman/brewer/islander discovering and exploring the rugged winter beauty of Maine, you might use the info in the back of the book to try renting a sled and heading out on your own.
