Silvercrest Guardians

Rate this book

Calla, daughter of shadow.

The girl with the dragon, accused of bewitching three powerful men.

Can her magic unite the kingdom or will she tear the realm further apart?

Silvercrest Guardians is the second book in the Daughter of Shadow fantasy romance series. The first book Dragon Soul must be read first.

Calla arrives at the stronghold with her three guardians, but not everything goes to plan. Her unusual magic skills arouse suspicion and, when Calla’s true powers reveal themselves, her life is in danger.

Leander attempts to reconcile his role as High Lord with his need to protect Calla—a girl his advisers tell him must die. Rohan struggles with his feelings for the girl he’s commanded to watch and kill if necessary. And Galen is determined to prove that there is more to Calla’s story while trying to make sense of his feelings towards a human girl.

All believe that Calla's dragonkin Luin holds the key to who she is.

A new elven ally knows more about the situation inside the Ebon realm and promises the group answers. He introduces the four companions to somebody who reveals Calla's hidden background and the source of her power.

Calla faces an impossible decision—risk her life by returning to the stronghold, or travel to a place of greater danger to fulfil a destiny that will change the kingdom forever.

Daughter of Shadow is a slow burn reverse harem fantasy series. Full length, action-packed, sword and sorcery books with a strong heroine, a pet dragon, and irresistible guys.

Oh my... dragonkin!

When I received this sequel to DRAGON SOUL I was stoked to be reunited with Calla, Luin, Leander, Rohan & Galen again. Unfortunately, my reading schedule was quite full at the time, so I didn't actually get to read it until a week after it had released. Oops! But as the saying goes: good things come to those who wait - and that is exactly what happened! After the slow start to the previous book, Lisa changed things up in this one, where we dive straight into intrigue, excitement, mystique and politics - as Calla, Luin and her men arrive at the Stronghold. Calla is now a confirmed daughter of shadow, which earns distrust from almost everyone in the Stronghold right away. This isn't helped by her rocky connection with Devin, a new elf recruit with Ebon traits. By having to join the recruits, Calla is not only separated from Leander, Rohan and Galen - but in an attempt to keep her somewhat safe, Luin is also hidden away.

In the Stronghold each of the men have to return to their duties and roles, which means they have to keep up pretences, by keeping a distance to Calla. Feeling alone and rejected Calla has a hard time knowing who she can really trust, and time is definitely not on her side. Without Luin at her side Calla is unable to control her magic, which leaks through whenever she's feeling scared or threatened. With the first book being all about laying the ground work, this one is all about the answers. We finally learn more about both Calla and Luin. I was extremely intrigued by Calla's Dragonkin in the first book, so I'm so happy to finally have my suspicions about him confirmed. Much is still uncertain but there's one thing that isn't; it's time for Calla to take control and make a decision about which path she'll choose to walk. With the answers provided in this sequel it's clear what needs to be done, to defeat the Ebon Queen and save the kingdom. But it doesn't seem like anything will come easy, especially not when the people fighting for Light also seems to have ulterior motives!

One of the things that never fails in LJ Swallow's books, is her strong and incredible world and character building. The fantasy world she's created here is amazing, intriguing and complicated. At times it seems that Lisa has drawn inspiration for the different Dragonflights, from the MMORPG game World of Warcraft, and as a former gamer I really enjoyed that aspect - whether it's intentional or just my interpretation. As for the characters, I love how much Calla has grown, in such a short amount of time. Though she's far from perfect she's easy to identify with, and her feelings and reactions seems real. I think the characters I enjoyed the most, was Leander, Rohan, Galen and Luin. Though Calla gets some alone time and get closer with each of the guys, they're still struggling with the consequences of staying with Calla. Luin... Oh Luin. He and Devin are by far my favourites - and I can't wait to get to know them better when the next book comes out.

The story it's self has so much potential, but man does it need a proof reader. I'm actually really bummed by this because I love Night world Academy!

The main male character name used was often not the one it should have been. (It was very obvious)

At first she had a younger brother, then an older brother and then a sister... Which is it??
Besides spelling and grammar mistakes the story has a lot of flaws.
The men constantly tell her that she is the strongest person they know. This started after a day. She has not done anything that would lead me to think she is strong at all in book 1 or 2...

I'm seriously frustrated because this could be a great book. Unfortunately it reads like a rough, first draft...

The thing is, I really want to read book 3. The story line is good, and I need to see what happens next... Ugh.

This series has a ton of potential and I genuinely like the story. The first book was fun, but by the second book the flaws started to show. The men in the story refer to Calla as strong and brave, but she’s done nothing to support that. There are no strong female characters in the series. I don’t even think that every female character needs to be “strong” but every other female in the series is either evil, incompetent, rude, or ugly (by Calla’s description). That being said, I did mostly like the main characters and the story was compelling. I do think the author is talented and they started out with a great idea here, I just won’t be continuing the series.

Does this book have plot holes? Yes. Does it need some editing? Also yes.

But a girl with magic and a dragon and has 3 men obsessed with her and she’s just picking and choosing who she wants when she wants it??? Sign me up

“I don't need magic to bewitch the man whose arms I lie in” go off Calla

The first book i wasnt sure what it was but i was feeling ehhh about it thinking maybe its just my mood or maybe its that first books free pass thing where they start off a bit slow and weird but really get going the second book a bit like the second season of a tv show... but during reading this i realised i was getting deja vu with the same feelings and isdues that lead me to drop The Four Horsemen series. Also a reverse harem also by this author but alas dragons are my weakness and i figured the writing the story the characters and world building in general wouldve improved the more experienced the author became. Unfortunately that is not the case in this instance. This reminds me a bit of the power of five series and haven realm in genre and general story but where those are written better in various ways even if they arent all winners this is just idk i think it must have to do with the weird flow the lack of solid fleshed out characters and also all the fucking inconsistences my god. I cbf listing them all and i also cant be bothered putting in more effort than the editor of the book if it even had one i mean excuse me but what the fuck are the advanced readers or proofreaders or legit anyone doing when they read this before publishing!? Like i can get over the odd typos or shit like saying floor instead of ground or inconsistwnt characters or even meh to mediocre worldbuilding but this just really ticks all the shitty boxes that make all the pros not worth reading for and basically i dont want to feel like im constantly reading a rough draft like?! The authors ideas are from ehat ive read always awesome but the execution is lacking in so many elements and its dosheartening cause with some serious polishing theyd honestly be awesome maybe even on par with some favourite series if not authors of the similar genres but this is ahh im annoyed i was suckered in by the dragons when btw are barely mentioned and honestly theyres so many loose ends and unecessary shit like if you were gonna have her have a family then have them a solid part in her life make us invest dont just have it cause you think oh ye ah lets chuck in a family thatll maybe be mentioned twice that even the writer forgets about that the fucking daughter doesnt even miss or care about even though shes apparently some loving hoe but oh we meet her friend once and never again and shes really strong fighter and yet shes really a pushover idk like show me shes strong show me her fiery spirit make me care about her life and her dreams and not just tell me. I mean this wouldve been SOOOOOO much better if the family was just oh they died by the time the sotry starts her mother maybe the only survivor is captured by the evil queen even though my impression from her family is their shitty i mean eho are they? We dont even get a scene with any of them like why bother same goes for the friend she shouldve just been an orphan itd make more sense she couldve lived above the friggen apothecary or maybe she hung out in a small cottage through the woods cause herbs and shes an outcast and luin is better out their and once she exploded something in toen or they took pity on her cause her family died and so they let her stay in the old cottage or something i mean ahhh im more mad that a good story is told bady like when a book you love is turned into a really shitty movie version and youre like the fuck i this this isnt the story this is a tragedy thats how i feel. This has so much potential and everytime i read a book by lj swallow i want to like it i keep reading cause i want the story to get better and be worth my time but it just friggen isnt and its like great really glad im either gonna have an unfinished story in my head annoying me or in actually going to have to force myself to finish it and end up hating everything.
I doubt ill read the next book even though ironically its the third book and finally seems to have fucking dragon stuff but idk please get people to fucking proofread and suggest some edits or small changes or something maybe run through it and cut characters like unnecessary bitchy sisters? Random characters who are there for one purpose then just disafuckingpeer like PLEASE I WANT YOUR BOOKS TO BE AMAZING THEY CAN BE AMAZING JUST GOOD GOD GET AN EDITOR OR 3 invest the stuff you cut into more time with the main characters and worldbuilding and not useless drama or whatever i was reading action for the sake of it. Frankly i felt like i was walking through the dead ebon lands that had the life sucked out of them and made you sick and weary for the majority of this series. Like i didnt even care if people died at all. Which is weird cause im an empath which is basically will cry at anything and frankly it scares me how little i am emotionally invested in characters im suppose to care about. Everytime i think there might be a new interesting character NOPE you get 5 seconds of them thats it you wont remember who they are or their name youll get lots a random people introduced then never seen or heard from again its like the story itself has no fucking clue. Like whats the timeline here what does she like fucking doing does she have a personality orrrrrr like soooo mamy loose ends snip them off or rip them out i dont care just my heads going to explode.

Calla is a daughter of shadow. There is dangerous, uncontrollable magic inside of her. She also has Luin, her dragonkin. These two things alone are reason enough for people to fear her, to want her dead. Her three protectors have brought her to the stronghold hoping she will give them the advantage against the Ebon Queen and her army but Calla soon finds herself the subject of suspicion. With her guardians all playing their roles in the stronghold and separated from Luin, she finds herself feeling alone. The attention of another recruit, an Ebon-looking elf draws even more distrust and hostility her way. Then circumstances force her to run. Will her guardians go with her or turn their backs on her? Is she destined to serve the Ebon Queen or can she help in the fight against her? So many unanswered questions surround her. It's time to get some answers.

Fantastic book! This is Calla's book and we learn so much about her history but it's also Luin's story. But it's so much more. Exceptional world-building, excellent storytelling. Politics, intrigue, deadly ambitions may destroy the side of the Light. We learn about the elves, the dragons, and the world itself. We understand so much better now what needs to happen to defeat the Ebon Queen and save the land. We also see how hard it will be to accomplish and how difficult it will be to get support from the Light.

Calla's character has grown so much in such a short time. She's definitely not perfect; she's scared, strong, caring. She feels deeply for her guardians even when they don't deserve her. She's conflicted about Devin but it's clear there's something there. Devin is a welcome addition. He's a complicated elf. Leander, Rohan, and Galen each have their moments. They are near perfection one scene and then weak the next. Leander with his position, Galen with his fear of his own darkness, and Rohan with his ingrained sense of duty and his prejudice of dragons all fail Calla at one time or another. I felt betrayed on her behalf. They all seem to come through in the end but they must do better!

The story didn't end on a cliffhanger but is definitely unfinished. As Calla got her answers she is now directed on a new course. Now it will not only be a fight against the Ebon. Calla will have to come to terms with her shadow and learn to control her magic to do what she is needed for.

I’m gonna start this review off by saying that Leander is a POS. Okay, I’m done.

Now, Calla is in the stronghold and isn’t really sure how she’s gonna fit into a place here. She’s supposed to be a recruit, but no one must know about her shadow powers. When the men she relied on through her journey here all but leave her clueless, Calla has to figure out what’s happening around her. It isn’t long before Rohan and Galen are back to supporting her when things start turning against her, but Leander, again, is a POS and doesn’t want to abandon his position at the stronghold. He basically treats her like a tool to use. Gross. While this is all going down, Devin, an assassin elf recruit, seems to know more about what is going on in her life than anyone around her. With his help, she realizes that the stronghold isn’t the safest place for her or any of her guardians.

The plot of this book was soooo much more interesting than the last. Was I more frustrated with Calla and some of her decisions?? You bet your ass. When Calla ends up having sex with Leander after the way he treated her, and with no apology or resolution from it, that was so fucking dumb. I was so mad I didn’t even like their scene together. Basically rewarding his toxic behavior ugh. Compared to the first book, I’m totally here for Galen and Rohan. They definitely gained some depth in this book that I enjoyed and their journey to accepting Calla was much more enjoyable compared to Leander’s. Maybe I just hate the “you’re a lowborn and I’m a royal” trope.

Anyway, I’m glad we’re getting some insight into what’s going on with Calla and the rest of the story development. Now that we know some more, I am still interesting in reading to find out what happens. It’s just gonna be a minute before I pick up this book again because I don’t want the third book to end in a cliffhanger. This book left off in an expected but veryyy welcome spot for me. Totally called it. Will come back to the series once it’s complete.

Its ok. Not running to read book 3.

The novel follows the journey of Calla, the female protagonist, who possesses the evil power of Ebon shadow inside her. Her three consorts bring her to the stronghold, which raises a lot of questions about their intelligence.

One of the standout characters for me was Devin, a possible new male protagonist. His charm and funny banter quickly made him one of my favorites. However, of the four male main characters, Leander was my least favorite. Despite this, I appreciate that the author stayed true to his character (at least the arrogant Lord side of his personality) and reactions.

The story itself is not overly complex, making it easy to follow at a quick pace. However, the constant distrust between the protagonists got old fast, and I found myself skim reading at times. They are also many inconsistencies that I feel could have been easily corrected by genuine & honest ARC readers.

Despite this, "Silvercrest Guardians" has some strong points. The world-building is simple and easy to understand. The magic system is unique and interesting which provides a lot of great opportunities that I hope the author utilizes. The book also has some great action scenes that kept me engaged long enough to finish the book.

One of the things that stood out to me was the exploration of the power within Calla. We finally learn more about dragons and Calla's dragonkin. It added a layer of complexity to her character and the story as a whole. Im hoping that as the story grows, so do the characters because tbey are slightly flat right now.

The book also touches on themes of trust, loyalty, and betrayal, which are common in fantasy novels. The execution was slightly annoying, and didnt really do much for the overall storyline.

Overall, "Silvercrest Guardians" is a simple fantasy read. While it has its flaws, it has enough strong points to make it worth checking out. If you're looking for a quick, engaging read with unique elements, "Silvercrest Guardians" is worth considering.

This book is amazing! It’s everything I wanted in the Daughter of Shadow book 2 and more!!! We got to learn so much more about Calla and who she is and where she came from. We understand more about what’s happening to her and how she really needs her guardians’ help. I loved the twist in the end of this book with Luin; I’m so happy about that part because it was what I was hoping for since I love him. I loved Devin so it was an unexpected surprise to have him join her guardians, and he played such a big role in this book. Rohan definitely went through some life-changing circumstances, but he came out on top and with Calla by his side. Leander had much to prove for a while in this book, but I was happy that he decided to join Calla again. Galen was one of my favorites in this book because of his constant support of Calla and his constant protectiveness of her always. She has a fierce and strong group of guardians, and I know they will protect her during the next part of her journey. I can’t wait for more in this series with Ebon Queen next! I love this book and this series! It’s one of my absolute favorites from author LJ Swallow

Calla's story continues as she enters the stronghold. It is clear that no one had a clear plan as to what to do with her once they got her here. Leander slips back into his High Lord persona and Rohan into his Lightbringer role. Galen is barely a part of the upper echelon as he and the other elves are not really trusted by the majority of the elite. He has taken Luin to hide the dragonkin and Calla is alone. She is thrown in with the recruits and things immediately go wrong. She almost reveals her shadow. If not for the "accidental" interference by an elf who looks more Ebon than Lumen, she would have revealed herself as a Daughter. Devin seems to have appointed himself her protector, but what are his real motives? It turns out that ulterior motives abound in the stronghold.

From the stronghold to the deadlands left by the Ebon, to a mysterious island where it is whispered that dragons are sleeping, Calla's adventures are far from over. Not even her original three protectors could have imagined what is in store for them as the future unfolds.

I was given a copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

I thought the story line would get better but honestly, I just got more confused. I'm also confused by their dynamic. Are they all her men or is it just the original 3 ?
I don't get it.
But some of the things said and done didn't make sense or contradict what was being implied or said before. It was hard for me to just stay in the story. The story just seemed like it wasn't fully complete or edited before published. I'm not just talking about grammatical or spelling errors, I'm talking about story line that just didn't make sense or follow what was going on. It wasn't too awful bad. The main plot of her being the savior and everything stayed on point.
There were 2 smut scenes with one of the guys each time.. (Leander and Rohan) but it wasn't all that smutty or spicy. Though I am judging Leander for his actions and how he talks about her. When trying to convince her she was more than just the key or an opportunity to him he fudged it up and she acted like he told her none of it mattered lmao. (outside the cave after the interaction with Devin)

Spice 0/5
Humor 0/5
Emotional 0/5
World Building 2/5
Overall 2.5/5

Calla is in the stronghold. She's safe. Isn't she?
Snort- yeah right!
I am thrilled to be able to read this book as I thoroughly enjoyed being enthralled with Calla and her quest from the first book in the series. And YES you really do need to have read book one.
I was just as enchanted with Calla and her companions in this book as I was in the first - but wait who's this Devin? What is Devin?  And is he to be trusted?
And will we ever learn what exactly is Luin? I thoroughly enjoyed the way the book is written as if we're sitting right on Calla's shoulder (budge up Luin give us some room!) And we get to see what happens as it unfolds.
I love the way the quest is unfolding and how Calla and her guardians interact with each other and with her (not to mention with Luin! ) who exactly are the baddies? And who can we trust? Hmmm not is all as it seems.... but it sure is fun to find out!

Silvercrest Guardians is book 2 in the series and continues the story where it left off where Calla and her men finally arrived at the Stronghold. But as she finally shows more of her powers, suspicions run against her. Will she be an advantage against the Ebon Queen or will she be a new threat? It doesn’t help that she had Luin, a dragonkin. With men back at the stronghold, they had to attend to their duties and that left our Calla, in a place where she doesn’t know anyone aside from the men while still learning her powers through training.

The pace of the story certainly picks up and some questions are answered from book 1. We have also learned more of Calla’s backstory and of course, Luin’s. Also, we see how Calla's guys fight what they felt for her but couldn't help but give in to their feelings. I can’t wait to read the next book in the installment to know what will happens next!

‘Silvercrest Guardians’ is full of romance, mystery, action, magic and so much more!
I just loved this second book in this series. Calla is at the stronghold now and sent to train with the other recruits where rumors abound about who she is. Rohan is told by his order to constantly watch her and to kill her if she shows any magic. Leander is trying to keep control of his stronghold and protect Calla but people close to him work against him. Galen knows there is more to Calla and believes her dragonkin Luin is the key. When another recruit saves Calla from fully revealing her magic and what she is, she starts to trust him, but her three men have their doubts about him.
When Calla is forced to run from the stronghold, will this newcomer and her three men stand by her? Does this newcomer really have the answers to who Calla is?
I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.

Still completely sucked into this series! Immediately bought the third book after finishing- I just can’t stop reading.

I like that the author chose to quickly move away from the stronghold location- I did not like it nor how the story was progressing in that location. It seems that this stories shines best when they are traveling as that was the majority of the first book and the part I enjoyed about the second book.

Ngl I still don’t really understand Devin’s role in this whole aventure and honestly he’s more just a cockblocker for the 4 of them but who knows I’m excited to see what he’ll bring to the table in the next book.

2nd books in series are always tough and usually people’s least favorite ones so even though it def wasn’t as good as the first one I already expected that and enjoyed it nonetheless.

Luin is a savage and I absolutely love it.

Wow, what a read!! Calla definitely goes through her fair share of obstacles in this book. Along the way, new enemies and friends emerge as well as a few shocking revelations. All is not as it seems behind the walls of the keep. We start to see glimpses of who she is meant to become. Are all the players in motion on the board, or are there more to come? I thoroughly enjoy this series. After all, who doesn't like a good quest? Now if only the guys would open their hearts and minds to get out of preconceived ideas. I'm greatly looking forward to the next in this exciting series!!

Okay okay.

The story progresses and Luin has turned into a man. Is this Calla girl going to have FIVE men drooling her feet? Because dayumn.

The world gets more interesting as it finally by the end of the book explain more about the lore of the dragons. I honestly can't wait to read the end battle of this Ebon kingdom.

The slow burn?! Is very slowly burning! But. I really love that Calla gets to build the meaningful connections with each of them first.

Here's to me hoping the third one is going to be just as good and even better.

LJ Swallow has continued Calla, Luin and her three guardians - Leander, Gallan and Rohan’s journey. There many twist, turns and reveals threaded through out the story.

Calla continues to attract danger and the addition of another man in her life - Devin adds even more intrigue to her story.

I love this book it is a great read. I loved finding out more about Calla’s origins and her unique powers.

I can’t wait to read the next instalment - Ebon Queen.

This story is something else. It has intrigue, danger, mystery and something else I can't thing of a word that describes it. It is something like "The Lord of the Rings". This is a little over half way through the whole story, I think there are three books. So there is a lot more to cover yet. God! I hope it's not one with four books. I would crumble if it is. Really, really, good story. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.

Oops I finished to fast!

I love this series and once again stayed up to late and finished, the wait until April is going to kill me. Calls is such a strong yet vulnerable character that I have such sympathy for, I don't know if her shoulders are wide enough. Who can she trust ,who wants her for herself and not for other reasons, who will love her? Will be not waiting patiently but want to see what happens next.

Brilliant!!

This series deserves a 5 star rating although it is a little slow to get into once you do you will be hooked.
I love the characters especially Luin the dragonkin, the way the storyline grabs you and drags you into a land of make believe actually makes you believe. I definitely recommend the series which starts with Dragon Soul, persevere and its an extremely enjoyable experience.

kind of a repeat

Better written than the first book, in terms of grammar and prose, but the plot is essentially the same. A journey from one place to another. There is little character development and nothing to really flesh out the story. The premise is pretty good, though, and I’m interested to see where this goes. Looks like we’re in for another journey in book three, though.

Short enough to keep me reading to finish it, plus I have commitment issues in the opposite way (like, once I’ve started something I can’t really find it in me to stop), so I’ll be finishing the series but it’s just an okay series so far.

I get big ick from the way these men just pass Calla around and she allows it to happen with no spoken agreement or plan between any of them. But the dragon aspect is interesting and keeps me from just hanging this one up for good.

What twists and turns!

Things are getting more dangerous almost by the minute for Calla. Her magic pulled out during testing by the mage at the Stronghold. Now everyone is out for her blood.
The head of the Lightbringers isn’t what Rohan thought him to be. Galen isn’t the only one not happy with the assassin brought in by the head of the Guild.
Things are going from bad to worse…and will get worse.
There are some surprises in store so get ready!
I am off to book three!

very different from the supernatural norm

This story is very different from what I’d expected. Clues were dealt out piece by piece and there was a great bit of mystery. Fraught with prejudice and mistrust, Calla and company are unsure whom they can truly rely on.
The end of the book has some answers, but really opens up more questions. I’m looking forward to the next in series.
Several areas could benefit from a good proofreading/editing, which brought down a star.

Loved it. So much action and adventure in the second book. The new characters revealed in book 2 make the story even more exciting. It leaves you as all Lisa’s books so wanting more. It did not disappoint and can not wait for book 3 knowing what’s the come 😃. Lots of romance, banter and adventure from start to finish.

Calla is amazing. I absolutely love her. She tries hard to do the right thing; but inside she still feels like she is inadequate. We are finally realizing what it means for Calla to be the Daughter of Shadow. A lot happens in this book and especially closer to the end. Some big things are revealed. I'm really enjoying this series and am excited to for the next book.
