“The Fall of the House of Usher” and Other Tales of Terror

He is the grandmaster stylist of macabre storytelling; the dean of American literary terror. Edgar Allan Poe’s tales of brooding fear, haunting mystery, and horrifying madness are flawless gems of dark imagination. And in the rich, raw, unchained nightmare renderings of renowned painter and graphic artist Richard Corben, Poe’s timeless works find their most gloriously chilling visual counterpart.

Now, after more than a decade’s absence, the landmark collaboration of these kindred souls in the great ghoulish tradition is resurrected. Edgar Allan Poe: “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Other Tales of Terror, faithfully adapted and fully illustrated in bewitching color and devilish detail, is vintage Poe and classic Corben for devotees of consummate dread.

For mature readers.

This isn't actually the same book that I have, the but the title is the closest that Goodreads has, so I'm hesitant to really review it. However, I imagine other collections of his work are somewhat similar.

Short version: some of the stories felt compelling and tense and interesting. This only made the others seem even more dreadful by comparison. "House of Usher" itself was pretty hard to get through the first time, although on second read it improved.

My version of this book ends with the "Narrative of A. Gordon Pym," a novella that takes up almost half the book. It began very interesting and reasonably paced, without all the drudgery and portentousness of some of the other stories, and got quite tense and exciting. Then it suddenly morphed into a mind-boggling boring travelogue (complete with details about the cut of the sails and the longitude and latitude that day) for a really long time before once again shifting into action and adventure, and then ending weirdly, with no real conclusion. At points I thought perhaps Poe was just messing with me, daring me to keep reading no matter how bad it got (ha ha, you stupid girl, you're totally falling for it). Maybe he was, and all the supposed faults of this difficult book were a ruse to trick me into writing a bad review of a classic and beloved author, who everyone knows was brilliant. Well, he got me.

A nice comics. Gave me a pleasant afternoon. This is not bad, but its not great either. Art-style could be better, and there is the question of lacking atmosphere.

This comics has a few of Poe's stories that are done fleetingly and 'The Fall Of House of Usher' done in greater detail.

Im giving this 3 stars because i don't think it does justice to Poe's work. There is something missing. Like a subtle felling of dread and oppressive despair characteristic to Poe. If you read more of his stories you'll know what I'm talking about. Its hard to pin point what that certain something is, but what ever it is its not here.

A lot of authors are trying to recreate this something that Poe did effortlessly , but they rarely succeed. But beside from that, if you don't care about the whole authenticity thingy and if you're just looking for a cool horror comics book to pass a afternoon you'll find it here.

My biggest complaint is that the reproduction of the art isn't that great. It's like they took scans of the original volume instead of going back to the original artwork. Pretty standard Corben retellings here. I love all of his stuff, so a three star rating is relative to his other work as opposed to other horror comics, because Corben is one of the best, if not the best horror comic artist in the field. I read his adaptation of The Fall of the House of Usher, but I think what I read was another retelling because this one seemed a lot different. I didn't like the lettering in this version. I just checked and the 2013 single issues I got are a new adaptation, and superior in my opinion. The other stories are pretty short and "The Raven" is the better of the two.

-Discussion questions:
1. Why do you think ghost of the lady Madeline appeared several times?
I think she wanted to tell Usher something.
2. The old man jumped into the great whirlpool to survive. Can you do the same thing?
No. It sounds terrible, so I will feel weak at the knees and I can't jump.

as far as graphic novel go, this one is okay. i am a huge poe fan so i knew that i would probably like it. some of the illustrations made it a little over the top for a jr/sr high school library. definitely 16+.

First read (2011, in October, of course): 3 stars.

Reread (2015, also October): I did not like it that much. It's not bad. The art is pretty bad at times - and what's with all the huge boobies?
