Dollycas’ and LizzieCas’ Thoughts

Since my accident, my daughter Lizzie has become the cookbook collector of the family and she loves to bake and cook so I thought it would be fun if we reviewed this book together.

Hannah Hart puts an awesome take on our year-long festivities with fun stories and recipes. As well she gives a great look into other days just as “Mental Health Day” and “Love Our Children Day”.

Some may think this book is more of a storybook instead of a cookbook we feel it’s a happy medium of both. We really enjoyed the author’s messages to introduce the book, each month, and each holiday. They are fun and informative and gave the book a more personal feeling. The pictures are colorful, some are pretty amusing showing readers Hannah Hart’s great sense of humor.

This will be a book we pull out all year through and we can’t wait to try the recipes for this holiday season. The green bean casserole graced our table for Thanksgiving (a new twist on an old staple). With cookie baking right around the corner, we will take Hannah’s advice to have a cocktail. She also includes some excellent advice about kids and explaining Santa and the magic of Christmas.

This book would make a great Christmas present to share with loved ones. We already have started out lists!

I love a good cookbook, I leave them on my coffee table for conversation and I read them cover to cover. This was awesome, funny and entertaining.

Though I love Hannah's voice and the piece she wrote for Labor Day in the September chapter, most of the pieces were forgettable.

I got this book thinking it was a cookbook. (It’s not really, at least not in the traditional sense. If you’re expecting to find recipes with specific measurements & clear instructions, rather than funny asides, on how to make a dish, you’ll be disappointed.) I knew of Hannah Hart mainly because a friend of mine was in a movie with her years ago. I don’t know her from her YouTube videos or TV shows, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I really enjoyed this book. It was (mostly) light reading, but it made me think about the celebrations we have. I learned about a few new ones, and I really enjoyed Hannah’s personal stories and self-help musings. Reading it felt like a friend was talking to me, a friend who gets that all great things in life somehow involve food as part of the communal experience.

This book is 100% fan service for enthusiasts of Hannah Hart's YouTube channel, My Drunk Kitchen. The photos are pretty and the recipes are accessible--no need for imported truffle oil among your ingredients. However, many of the holidays are B-list or C-list holidays or made up altogether. Still an enjoyable read--but I am a fan of My Drunk Kitchen, so take my review with a gain of salt!

First of all, much like My Drunk Kitchen: A Guide to Eating, Drinking, and Going with Your Gut, this is not a cookbook. It is a funny, well-written book. If you are a long-time fan (as I am), the personal growth Hart displays even from Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded to this book is incredible. Highly recommend for fans, people who like to laugh, or people looking for happy lesbian representation.

This book was received as an ARC from PENGUIN GROUP Dutton in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I did see Hannah's YouTube show called My Drunk Kitchen and have read her first cookbook to come out of that show and loved how she brought fun and humor into the show and she cooks too on top of that. Hearing that she came out with a Holiday version of My Drunk Kitchen, I knew I had to jump at the chance to preview it. A lot of our patrons are fans of Hannah and after reading this cookbook, I know there will be a long list of holds for this book. I loved how she had a cocktail for each month and she had a unique dish to pair with it while still making it humorous and fun. We can't wait for the release of this book and there were some recipes in here that will be perfect for our cooking demo program.

We will consider adding this title to our Cookbook collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I love Hannah and in my humble opinion, any thing she produces is absolute gold. I will say the digital copy seemed harder to follow, so as always I will be picking up this book in its physical form. I do not have any real experience with digital cookbooks, but despite the recipes being inviting.. it was just hard read. It almost seems like this was intended to be a sampler.

The recipes were fun and easy to follow and Hannah's personality shined through out book in its entirety. The photos were absolutely stunning. Hannah, you are a gem! Keep up the fantastic work. I am giving this a four star review because I simply love Hannah's work. Her recipes are get and as with everything, she put her heart and soul to it. I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy so I can really get into it!

The second book in the My Drunk Kitchen series is definitely more mature and refined than the first. The original book felt very natural with all its flaws and unappealing food. This one was well put together and the food stylist did a good job creating lovely displays, but it felt less Hannah Hart and more glossy magazine in all its fake-ity. The food looked nice, but I didn't start watching My Drunk Kitchen to see pretty food. I kind of wanted that natural feel back.

As with the first book, this is less a cookbook, and more a self-help book about appreciating life and making a lot of puns. While this one seemed to have more actual recipes than the first, it's more of a place to get ideas rather than detailed how-tos on making the food. Most of the recipes are very vague and do not include measurements (shout out to Ella's mom for the perfectly-detailed Black Olive Stuffing recipe; it looks mouthwatering and I definitely want to try making it).

The book is a mix of crafts and cooking ideas. Some of the holidays did not have either attributed to them and just gave some of Hart's thoughts on life, which was interesting, but I kind of wanted something to go along with it. Others were just semi-related ideas and tips rather than anything "useful" (go out for oysters, try out different hot dog toppings and presentations, etc.).

The pictures are fun and visually appealing. It was entertaining to learn about various lesser-known holidays, read some silly puns, and get to know Hannah Hart a little better. It's been a while since I read the first one, but she appeared more open about her personal life in this one.

You can definitely tell that Hannah Hart has grown a lot as a person in this book in comparison to the first one. More mature with the same fun humor. Reading/listening to Hart's jokes and thoughts on life is always a good time.

Overall, an interesting read.

More a Self-Help Book than a Cookbook

Although the title says this is a holiday cookbook, and it does cover the major holidays, it’s more about inventing holidays as background for giving suggestions about food and presenting a philosophy of life. Some ideas come off better than others. Seeing what it’s like to have children by duct taping a watermelon to your abdomen is one of the weirder ideas.

I was unfamiliar with the background for this book. It’s an offshoot of Hannah’s successful YouTube videos. I think some of the holidays would work better on the screen. However, the pictures in the book are colorful and often amusing.

Recipes are rare, at least ones I’d be tempted to cook. Some recipes for Thanksgiving might be worth a try like garlic mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. However, it seems that most recipes are really about talking for life and Hannah’s philosophy.

The book is fun to read, if you don’t take it too seriously.

I received this book from Dutton for this review.

With the same irreverent humor and flair for fun food that made her cooking show an online hit, entertainer Hannah Hart offers up "My Drunk Kitchen Holidays!: How to Savor and Celebrate the Year: A Cookbook". She covers twelve months of holidays, and not just the big ones like Valentine's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas--she also finds ways to celebrate lesser-known, but still worthy holidays like Trivia Day, Ravioli Day, Eat What You Want Day, Middle Child's Day, Love People Day, Mental Health Day, and many others. Here are some of the unique recipes that you'll find: "Globe Cake"; "Ravioli a la Conflict (Resolution)"; "Acceptance Avocado Toast"; "Rainbow Cake"; "Blintz, Baby"; "Pasta From he Heart (of a Non-Vampire); "Black Olive Stuffing"; :Love the Way You Latke"; and "Cozy Corn". If you are a "glass half-full" person, and every day is a reason to celebrate, then you will find much to enjoy in Hannah's holiday book.

Not what I was expecting. This felt more like she was under obligation to fill a contract to write a book to me. She mentioned some holidays every month, some odd off the wall ones like cheese pizza day, cookie day, left handed day, and my favorite drink wine day (Feb 18). She did touch on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving day, Christmas and New Years too. She basically gave her thoughts on it. She didn’t give recipes for every holiday just about a 10 total for the whole book. There’s a couple more but she doesn’t sound confident about them.

I will add in her list of food for dogs, what she listed as not safe is not complete!! Rosemary and Rosemary Extract are extremely dangerous for most dogs that have seizures, yet most companies use one or the other.

Anyhow, as a whole, I was disappointed this time in her book.

I'm not entirely sure if the entire book was suppose to download to my Kindle, or only a few pages... Well, October is in my Kindle and it looks like fun! Interesting recipe for candy apples, but doesn't say what stage candy should heat to before dipping apples. ('m going with hard crack, but only cause that's the stage I make the candy apple candy at.) Also Valentine's Day cupcakes were different. One recipe for sweet, another for savory....I don;t know if I could eat a cornbread cupcake with a cream cheese and blue cheese icing.... Oh, well, sounds unique. Not sure I'd purchase the book for anyone. Maybe I'll wait a bit to see the actual book..

I received a Kindle arc from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.

Hannah's newest book captures the same fun and funny energy of her brand, and as such this holiday cookbook offers plenty to enjoy! Adding humor to a cookbook has now become a bit of a trend, so when authors can do it well, their books stand apart from others. I thought a few sections felt a little bit stretched -- or perhaps that's just where an editor's pass on the manuscript took away from the flow and from Hannah's voice. Those little speedbumps have just a little bit of impact and are forgivable when you remember that many people don't read cookbooks cover-to-cover. I liked this one a lot and will pop back into it during the holiday season. Thank you to NetGalley, Hannah and publisher for granting me a happy look at this one!

Thank you for the ARC of My Drunk Kitchen Holidays! by Hannah Hart. I had an issue with it though; maybe somebody was too drunk 🤦‍♀️😂 I was only able to read the sweet cupcakes recipe in February and two recipes on October. Maybe it was a download issue? 🤷‍♀️
I'm quite disappointed. I was looking forward to getting new recipes and just reading what Hannah Hart has to say about the recipes she's included in her book. The sweet cupcakes sounds yummy. I love cupcakes. I'm excited to make the spooky margaritas on Halloween! Adults deserve the treats too, don't you think? If I come across it at the bookstore I might have to check it out to get a better feel for this book.

First of all I think it kind of stinks that so many of these reviews (good or bad) are based off of only a short preview.

This book is more food for thought than it is cookbook, and it is a very close adaptation of Hannah’s My Drunk Kitchen show.

I loved the recipe concepts that encourage celebration and using food as an opportunity for bonding with loved ones and solo reflection. My favorite moment is probably the ravioli “recipe” that includes tips for having healthy interactions in relationships. The whole book is filled with funny anecdotes and heart(hart)felt things to consider. Truly, only Hannah could’ve written this book, and it’s worth a read if you follow MDK!

OK, so I read her first book so long ago that I forgot I was lukewarm on her. I don't watch much YouTube, so I'm not that familiar with her non-printed work. She is very funny, and this book had a lot of good energy in the sense that it takes you through a year's worth of holidays (major and some quite minor) - if you're a fan it might be worthwhile to check out to get you through the upcoming season with some laughter. But you can't actually cook from anything in here, and while I really like her, I have the feeling that she's more fun to watch than to read.

Check this out if you're already a fan or need a laugh during the holiday season.

People who know me know that I used to be a hardcore Hannah Hart fan. This book was fun to read, and now I might have to go back and rewatch my favorite MDK (My Drunk Kitchen) episodes. Weird side note, Even though I started watching her Youtube Channel very shortly after she started uploading, I'm now the same age that she was when she made her first MDK video. o.O Time is weird. Anyway, if you like Hannah Hart, you'll love this book. The recipes are cute, and I like the month-by-month holiday theme. I hope she makes a drink recipe book at some point, punny cocktails are something I can always get behind.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review, but I was only given a few pages to read. I love Hannah Hart and I was excited to read this and the part I did read was fun, but I didn’t get to read enough of this book to give my full honest opinion of it. I follow Hannah Hart on YouTube and Instagram and I enjoy the content she produces. For that, I would recommend you pick up this book. I would suggest buying a hard copy though, because it wasn’t formatted properly to fit my kindle. It might just have been the copy I was sent but I would recommend a hard copy over the eBook.

I love Hannah, and I was very curious to see how she wrote this book. I still strongly prefer her memoir writing. Some things in this book, like in My Drunk Kitchen, feels forced. Also, whole Hannah admittedly speaks with a skepticism, this book has a strong mood-dampening underlier. While it tries to be fun a whimsical it sometimes comes off as doomsday. I still value her contribution and intend to support her, this book was not as light and fun to read as the first, and not nearly as heartfelt as Buffering.

A wonderful romp through the year with clever “recipes”, helpful advice, and a full sense of self that not only charms but engages the reader. As a fan of Hannah’s previous works, both digitally and in print, I was excited to see what this installment would offer. She has once again brought her signature voice to play, talking both cautiously and optimistically about life, love, the future, and most importantly personal health. A wonderful read, even if you aren’t familiar with Hannah before this. Which would be a shame, you really should fix that... :)

Funny "cookbook" celebrating some of the less celebrated holidays of the year, like Eat What You Want Day (5/11) and Middle Child's Day (8/12) as well as some of the "big" ones plus a few familiar ones rephrased (Labor Day as in "going into labor", New Year's Eve as "Champagne Day"). There are a few actual recipes, but most are the "mix all the ingredients to get a smoothie" kind of recipe, if not, "...okay, this is too hard, just buy it instead." Also some anecdotes from her real life to balance out the random snark.

Definitely a fun read for fans and newcomers alike!

I received and arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. For a cookbook, I found this book just okay. It may read differently on a kindle, but it was really choppy and there weren't many pictures to go on. There were too many things in bold and colored print and it took away from the recipe and I found it hard to go back exactly to what I was looking for. I found it to be a frustrating cookbook more than anything.

If the goal was to make a cookbook unlike any other, the author succeeded. I found the book was disjointed and had little of what I would classify as a cookbook in it. Have not watched any of Ms. Hart’s videos, so am not familiar with her style. But I’ve been reading cookbooks for decades and this particular one would not add anything to what I already own.
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley, and I’m leaving my review voluntarily.

I was excited to read through this cookbook since I have been a fan of Hannah's since I saw her on " I Hart Food" and YouTube. The galley I received was not a full version but it focused on a few holidays and I found the photos to be fantastic. I also loved how easy to follow the recipes were. The writing is witty and entertaining, almost like having a conversation with Hannah herself. I plan to buy a hardcover copy when this is published and leave it out on my counter to use all year long!

Magic has got to be real, because Hannah has somehow managed, for the third time, to write exactly what I needed to read at exactly the time I needed it. MDK Holidays is a triumph. It’s funny, witty, smart, heartfelt, and wise. Reading this book felt like getting a stern talking to and also a hug from a really great friend. It’s reminded me to seek out the joy, to find the celebrations, and to embrace the people in my life that make my life special. My biggest takeaway? Don’t save champagne.

This wasn't very good. I enjoyed Hannah's memoir book and love her youtube content. However, this was just a mess. No real recipes and the writing was kind of blah. I get that it was supposed to be lighthearted and encouraging; I just don't know who this book was for. Also, some of the font choices were really bizarre and hard to read.

I grabbed this with a bunch of other Thanksgiving and Christmas cookbooks and it was absolutely useless for that, but super fun anyway. Want to celebrate dog day? Video games day? Be a millionaire day? For those and a bunch of other random holidays (plus some regular ones), she has included recipes and some suggestions for how to celebrate.

I’ve been reading a chapter of this book every month this year to correspond with the holidays listed inside the book. It has been quite the year. Luckily, I had the voice of Hannah Hart remaining consistent throughout it all. This book is the perfect combination of funny, poignant, and mouth-watering.
