Coming three years before the author's My Little Golden Book About Construction Vehicles, this book aims to satisfy the appetite of his who love to read about and see fun pictures of airplanes, and does not disappoint in that regard. Mankind has been fascinate by the notion of flight since antiquity, watching birds and other creatures soar effortlessly through the skies, but the first motorized flight by humans didn't occur until 1903, when Wilbur and Orville Wright set their plane flying for twelve seconds. It was a turning point in human history.

As airplane flight became sustainable for longer periods, stunt pilots such as Bessie Coleman put on aerialist shows to thrill audiences of all ages. Charles Lindbergh pushed boundaries in 1927 by becoming the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo without a single stop, and in the 1930s Amelia Earhart repeatedly the accomplishment. The mystery of her plane's disappearance in 1937 morphed into a multigenerational mystery. Airplanes took on valuable military use in World War I, and by the 1940s powerful jet planes were revolutionizing distance travel. There were even planes engineered to land on water. It's hard to predict where the next innovation may sprout from, but anyone can work hard and learn to fly...even you.

The variety of information Michael Joosten mines for a book this size is impressive, paired with appealing retro illustrations by Paul Boston. Most kids who love airplanes will find a surplus of intrigue in these pages, enough to go back to endless times over the course of a childhood. I rate My Little Golden Book About Airplanes two and a half stars; as a nonfiction picture book, I give it a thumbs up.
