Leeana Tankersley really delivered in this beautiful and encouraging book that gives inspiration to begin again.

Each passage made me think a little deeper, feel a little braver, and love a little more.

I had some passages that did not apply or stick out to me in just because of the season I'm in.
But then there were some that felt like God reaching a finger down from Heaven and saying, "Here, read this "

It was amazing how much God used this book to speak to me and help me grow.

One particularly hard night I picked this book up and flipped to where I'd left off. I looked at the title of the passage and just went, "Whoa."
It was exactly what I'd been crying about earlier.

I 100% believe God uses books to reach us in a way spoken words cannot.
And I believe God will use this book to speak to you like He did for me.

I've been enjoying reading through a devotional that really isn't a devotional.  Does that make sense? Not really, but yes, it does.  Always We Begin Again by Leeana Tankersley is a series of short essays on the many ways we start over every day of our lives. They're not only relatable short stories but they include a guided writing prompt that can help each reader deal with their own beginnings.

Here's what I've learned, am learning or have found to be true:

The profound yet simple concept that we are constantly starting over is part of daily life.
God speaks to us in many ways during our stressful, busy days. Focusing on the issue of the moment, with God as our partner, until we discover the way through, will help calm our minds and lead to a solution.
We are held securely in God's arms. No matter the circumstances He keeps holding on.
There are multiple opportunities in our days and lives to begin again, to start over. Just as the sun rises new each day it also sets and gives us the opportunity to rest and reflect.
We are all addicts of some sort. Here's the thing, we can't pretend to have conquered the problem. Whether we eat, drink, spend, talk, criticize, complain... too much or too little, it can be controlled through God's grace and our willingness to take each day as it is.

One of the things I really liked about this book is each short essay/story is simply numbered but not dated.  That way if I don't read it each day I don't have the pressure of being behind or having to catch up.

This collection is relatable and encouraging. It is reassuring and supportive. There is hope woven throughout its pages. Thank you, Leeana Tankersley, for writing and sharing.

Best quote from the book: "Growth and healing start by giving ourselves the permission to pursue them. If we aren't willing to show up and participate, then chances are, our souls will be lost on some level. And chances are, it will affect the people who want to share life with us." (pg. 210)

Always We Begin Again --- the title pulled from a line in The Rule of Saint Benedict --- is a kind of devotional work that features 100 short readings of encouragement for those struggling to reboot their lives after a period of pain, grieving, stagnancy, etc. If you are such a reader and have, of late, been feeling overwhelmed, ashamed, bogged down, or otherwise "stuck" in life, author Leeana Tankersley is here to remind you that each new day is a perfect opportunity to start again on a fresh page (in this case, both literally and figuratively). Right from the first page of her introduction, Tankersley takes a moment to bond with the reader, sharing that she knows something of starting over, having recently been forced into the process following a divorce she did not want or choose.

Tankersley describes this book as: "...some of the reminders I return to over and over again, the truths that have sustained me. Here they are, a collection of daily readings that I hope will companion you as you step into each new moment of your particular path." Each new section opens with a quote, either a relevant bible passage, memorable words from historical figures, or an inspiring line from motivational speakers over the years. As far as Tankersley's own offerings of encouragement, some of the ideas she touches upon:

* Giving yourself permission to be a perpetual novice at life, and to embrace periods of "starting over" as holy spaces for your spirit to rest and regroup.

* Remembering that beginning again does not necessarily equate to failure. Seeking a support group through a difficult time does not equate weakness. It means you are human, and humans tend to thrive most in community environments.

* Let your life be messy sometimes! Learn to find ways to laugh through the tough times, embrace your inner kid, and develop empathy FOR YOURSELF!

* "Invitation in the Agitation" --- sometimes difficulties (whether in the form of a person or situation) are placed in our path to teach us lessons about ourselves --- or skills we need to develop for later challenges --- that we would not otherwise learn... at least not as successfully... sometimes the agitation is secretly an invitation for spiritual / emotional / character growth.

* Riding out the "Messy Middle" seasons of life, "one of those protracted, unresolved, uncertain seasons...you are not at the beginning, but you are nowhere near closure either. And the middle stretches on indefinitely. It tries your stamina, your faith, your belief in yourself (and maybe all of humanity), and all you want is to hold your breath until it's all over...'Once this is resolved, then I can go on living,' I secretly say to myself. ...Someone has suggested to me that perhaps most of life is a Messy Middle. I don't want to hear or believe that, but it's likely true. Life rarely finds that elusive equilibrium we're all waiting for. We have to do the living in the midst of the mess."

* Soul Bullies --- Tankersley walks you through how to face bullies and naysayers, out in the world or within yourself: "You will have every good intention. You will be armed with resolve and hope and new knowledge, and all you have to do is wake up and the Soul Bullies will be on to you. They want to paralyze, shame, suffocate, embarrass and silence you. It's just what they do. But we cannot let them have the last word about us. We cannot. They want you to believe it's over, you're done for, things have come to a dead end... but sometimes walls are doors, and so even if you are facing what appears to be an ending, there might be some redemptive new life waiting beyond..."

Each section ends on a prompt question for thought, which also offers a lined space for readers to write in their response. Occassionally there are passages that are a little repetitive in the writing, sometimes reading like a student trying to meet word count requirements on a writing assignment. The section-end prompts themselves also feel a little more forced in later segments, almost like her inspiration for them was running a little more thin as she got closer to finishing the book.

While some of her personal stories I read with a grain of skepticism, much of what Tankersley brings to the table in the way of encouragement / emotional cheerleading to readers I found quite nice and useful. Most of it is not necessarily groundbreaking --- like many of its type, this book has a lot of repackaged ideas --- but that doesn't make them wrong. I like Tankersley's choice of warm-but-real wrapping!

A message of hope for those struggling.

I love the premise of this book. No matter the circumstances, we can begin again. Taken from St. Benedict, “Always we begin again” is a message of hope. That each step forward is a new beginning. That whatever happened previously, the gift of beginning again is as easy as making one single step.

The beautiful message of author Leeana Tankersley’s Always We Begin Again: Stepping into the Next, New Moment is served to readers in one hundred opportunities for healing. Each topic begins with a quote, sometimes from the Bible, sometimes another notable source. Ms. Tankersley covers each topic, drawing on her own life experiences, and ends with the reader’s self-exploration and writing exercise.

The topics of Always We Begin Again sometimes feel random, but they’re tied together by the theme that whatever angst of life is currently holding us back from loving ourselves or not living up to our full life potential in union with God, we are able to tackle it – to overcome – to begin again.

Ms. Tankersley offers us glimpses into her own struggles and triumphs at beginning again. We all face many of these hurdles at one time or another. It’s the human condition. The beauty of it is that it unites us and we can celebrate together at the idea of beginning again.

Some people might consider Always We Begin Again a devotion, although I don’t think that’s the perfect definition, but I can’t think of a better one. There are micro-prayers and prompts that encourage the reader to work with God, to talk to him, to include him in our struggles, but the overall focus feels more about the self-assessment aspect than the religious.

How this book affected me:
I’m in more of a ‘tweaking’ phase of my life than ‘re-vamping’, so I’m not currently dealing with many of the angst issues covered, but did find many topics to be pertinent to everyday life and overall encouraging a deepening relationship with God.

One particular topic that hit home for me was Sabbath = STOP. I’ve been reflecting on this personally for some time now. I find that I enjoy the “productivity” that I’ve convinced myself comes with running on the hamster wheel. One of my personal goals has been to “keep holy the Sabbath” and I continually fail at stopping for God and family. The other day, my husband actually said to me, “Why are you running?” I was literally running from my upstairs home office downstairs to the front porch where I was working on my laptop. I was running because I was working on the launch for my upcoming book. When I answered him, I realized how ridiculous it was - how hyped up I was over nothing urgent. I need to learn to STOP, not only for myself and my hubby, but to spend more time listening to God. This book provided another dose of reality for me.

Who would enjoy this book:
Readers who like devotions would enjoy this book. Anyone overwhelmed with life, feeling deflated, defeated, or broken. Anyone feeling “alone” in their struggles. Anyone needing God to help them take the step of beginning again. In short, anyone dealing with the angst of everyday life would benefit from this book.

The book reviews at Finding God Among Us focus on Christian books, adult and children, fiction and nonfiction. I chose to read an ARC from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. This review is my honest opinion.

How many of us have walked through a life season that has just knocked us down? And maybe felt like we’ve been knocked down, and knocked down, and knocked down again? We are just so tired and don’t know what to do. I’ve been there a couple of times in my life. Two springs ago, it felt like life as I knew it was over, again, and it was time to begin again, and at that very time I came across Leanna’s book Begin Again. It was like a God-send. When I found out Leeana was coming out with this devotional, Always We Begin Again, my heart felt so excited—and it has not disappointed my anticipation.

First of all, this is a 100 day devotional. Its design, quality, and layout make it a beautiful companion to walk your journey with. I love that it’s hardcover and small so it still fits in my purse or bag! Unlike a devotional you might be expecting, this one does not begin with a Scripture to mediate on each day, so if that’s what you’re looking for, this may not be for you. Leeana uses mainly quotes with a sprinkling of Bible verses throughout. But her anecdotes and writing and the way she spurs you along on the journey toward beginning again are all just truly beautiful and moving. My favorite aspect of Always We Begin again are the reflective questions included at the end of each day—designed to help us draw near to God where we are; they are so enlightening. And I love that there’s a small amount of lined space for us to jot our thoughts in response each day. Any reader will certainly find themselves growing and healing as they show up daily, beginning again, using this devotional to help them.

In these pages you’ll find the stuff we all need to heal and come alive and be present in our lives. This is the encouragement our souls and hearts need. This is like faith-cased therapy in a small black book. I am beyond grateful to Leanna for creating this book and for doing so in a way that feels like we’re not being preached at, but in a way that feels your gentle shoulder alongside of us. to.

If you’ve recently experienced a life-altering event (or even if it was years ago), I highly recommend you grab yourself a copy of this ASAP. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I already have a list of friends I want to give it as a gift. Thank you Leeana for doing the hard soul work of always beginning again and giving us a friend for our journeys.

When choosing a book, I often lean towards selecting a book that will encourage me and help me to grow spiritually. I also am drawn to devotionals. “Always We Begin Again” meets all three of those requirements! I had never read a book by this author, so I was excited to dig in.

The book is split into 100 daily readings. I read the book in a few days, so it can be a quick read, but I would recommend reading it over 100 days. This makes it easier to digest and reflect on what you are reading. Each day’s reading was about two pages, and ended with a reflection question or two. The main message of the book is that no matter what happens, each day is a new opportunity to begin again.

I found many nuggets of truth within the pages of this book, but a few of my favorite quotes were:

“God is beside, before, and beneath us. We sink back into God’s great love and provision and we choose rest instead of relentless trying.”

“When it comes to transformation, God’s wrath is not the fuel. God’s love is the fuel. God is not a divine bully. He is a nurturing, protective mother and father. God so loved the world that he sent us a way out of our own closed hoops of striving and trying. He sent us a new way: his grace. All of it, all of it, was motivated by love.”

“Your circumstances do not define you. God does. So no matter how messy the Messy Middle is that you’re in right now, I believe there is a part of you that is deeper and more essential than anything you are going through. Your issues are not your identity.”

“Stress, chaos, urgency, and panic don’t have to control our lives. We actually have a say. We can allow ourselves the dignity of responding to our circumstances, even changing our circumstances, instead of just resigning to them.”

“We come to the door with our maladies and brokenness only to be received with revolutionary love. We come to the door with our jumbled-up fear and worry and our ferocious intensity, and we are met with grace. We come to the door, and we realize Chris was there knocking, all along.”

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a daily devotional to start or end their day, and for anyone who needs a little encouragement. I received a copy of this book from the Revell Bloggers Program, in return for an honest review.

Life.

We know it can only be lived one day, one step, one moment at a time.

“The path appears as we walk, one step at a time … The path does not arise or clarify because we run faster, think harder, or work more efficiently. The path arises and clarifies one grace-filled, love-filled, faith-filled step at a time. This is how we will make the entire journey.”

(from “Always We Begin Again” by Leeana Tankersley)

In her latest book, Always We Begin Again: Stepping into the Next, New Moment, Leeana Tankersley shares one hundred short devotionals sure to encourage and motivate every reader to start life anew.

Although we know there will be difficult times of feeling unseen or silenced, the struggle remains real.

We long for a do-over, a fresh start, a new beginning.

Each devotional is inspirational without being a “how-to”, as the author recognizes each of our fresh starts will be unique to us. She reminds us with each reading that starting anew is not a sign of failure, but a sign of growth.

The book is filled with quotes, Scripture, ancient writings, and transparent reflections which will infuse hope and courage to its readers.

Each reading is a balm for the soul delivering a quote, an authentic reflection, and a question to journal.

This hardcover book is beautifully bound in a compact size which makes it a wonderful devotional to gift and treasure. Every reading is an invitation to let God into our lives and begin again. On every page, if you quiet your heart, you will hear the whisper:

“There is always a hand reaching toward you.
There is always grace available.
There is always a chance to begin again.”
~ Leeana Tankersley

The first thing I thought after pulling this book out of its package was how gorgeous it looked. Really, I want to start this review with a shout-out to whoever designed it- it's SO CUTE! Not too small, not too large, this little hardcover book shines. The inside looks just a good, making it the perfect gift. I admit, all too easily I judge a book by its cover- first impressions count, right? And Always' design is perfection! I just want to buy copies of it and pass them out to all the special ladies in my life.

Okay. And now for my thoughts on the written word inside.

Leeana feels strongly about what she's writing about; you can tell that as soon as you read the introductory note at the beginning. What she's been through, as well as the struggles she faces every day, she has turned into a ministry to help those facing similar challenges. Pretty admirable! While the main topic of the book is new beginnings, many other themes are touched as well. Things such as being vulnerable, letting go, approval vs. love, and much, much more. And the way she writes is truly lyrical, honest and heart-felt.

Looking at the book as a whole, it would be a great gift for any the ladies in your life, or for yourself. The book's overall message is encouraging and inspiring, and Leeana Tankersley's words are sure to inspire many who read them.

This is an absolutely beautiful book that draws you in with it's simplistic beauty but once you open it, it's a wonderful, complex devotional that helps you find navigate the changes of life that inevitably come our way.

Leeana shares personal stories that draw you in and help you to realize that we all face struggles and difficulties, however, God is with us and will help us through these times when we aren't sure how to move forward.

This book has been especially helpful and comforting to me as I have been recently diagnosed with cancer and each day holds some new difficulty and fear.

Each day starts with a quote and then a short devotional that is thought provoking. Then begins my favorite part...the question and answer section. There are one or two short questions and lines where we can record our thoughts. I love when devotions have this because it makes it so much more personal and helps me to really work through things in my mind.

I love how Leeana points us back to God's Word again and again for our answers in this life. Her writing is beautiful and poignant and I absolutely adored this book! I highly recommend it, especially for your quiet time and especially if you find yourself going through a difficult season. I give it 5 stars.

Have you ever wanted a do-over? I know I have. But since we can't usually erase circumstances, disappointments, broken relationships, or frustrations, let's try the next best thing - let's begin again.

That's what this book is about. In 100 short readings, Author Leeana Tankersley encourages readers to press pause and begin again on the path of life. With insights from her personal life and scripture, she prompts readers to learn how to move forward in life despite the difficulties we face and our feelings of being sidelined, stuck, shamed, or silenced. With ourselves, our family, our friends, and even strangers, we can choose grace and discover the keys that enable us to begin again.

I appreciate the message in this book. Each reading is short enough to read in just a few minutes, but the insights kept me thinking throughout the day. The questions at the end of each reading also gave me the opportunity to journal my thoughts and feelings, and they can be useful for group study. Leeana's writing style is conversational, relatable and easy to read, too. One thing I would change is the font of the questions - it's hard to read.

For anyone who has wished for the chance to start over, check out "Always We Begin Again." It offers dozens of tools, tips and reminders that enable us to discover a new way of life.

Always We Begin Again is a powerful reminder of carrying on and persevering through the hard. Containing 100 daily devotionals, Tankersley reminds us to remain true and not let our hard days define us. Some of the MANY powerful reminders within include:

Recognizing how we think, talk about and talk to our dear friends versus how we think, talk about and talk to ourselves. Why are we so quick to beat ourselves up, but reassure and lift up our friends?

“No matter how beautiful and epic and glorious life is right now, the sun goes down. And no matter how ugly and rejecting and hurtful life is right now, the sun comes up,” (p. 118). The day begins again, tough things happen, but like the sun we will set and rise again.

Your issues are NOT your identity – you are not the abuse, anxiety, depression or infertility you experience. Sometimes we forget this as they overwhelm and take over our lives.

Tankersley speaks from experience as she herself is currently in a “messy middle,” going through her own divorce and anxieties she provides readers exercises, reminders and encouragement, reminding us all that we can “Always Begin Again.”

This book is broken down into 100 daily short readings, but once I picked it up I could not just read one, I sat and read multiple readings at one sitting. We all have felt at one time or another stuck and broken and don't know how to pick back up to start again...This book gives encouragement and motivation that each day is a new beginning and all it takes is one small step to move forward. I really like how this book didn't seem "too devotional-like" to me. She mentions God and there are some Scriptures sprinkled throughout, but I think if someone is struggling and does not know Christ or doesn't want anything to do with Him during their hard time, this book would be an excellent encouragement to them without the "preachiness", but at the same time still has the deeper meaning/perspective of God throughout the book. I will be buying several of these and giving as gifts to people I know that are going through tough times. Such an encouraging and motivating book!

I came to know Leeana Tankersley through her book Begin Again which was poignantly written. This new book is comprised of 100 short, power-packed meditations to help you start over. It’s not truly a devotional, because some of the meditation focuses are on quotes instead of Bible verses. But it is a spiritual book that will gently guide you through a time of difficult transition.

I am normally a fast reader at over 70 pages per hour. Yet these meditations are so powerful, I can only read one at a time. Leeana has a gift of putting you in touch with your pain points and talking with both frankness and love. If you are suffering, this book can help you see the light ahead.

I’ve been using this book in my afternoon quiet time. She provides a thought-provoking question at the end of each one, and I use it as the basis for prayer. This book is making the shortlist of my favorite books of 2019. It’s different and memorable, and very helpful for exploring your issues with deeper faith.

First impression of this book is that it is absolutely beautiful!

However, this is one of those books that is difficult to review, not that there is anything wrong with it, just that its layout is not really conducive to reading in the time frame given.

I wouldn’t exactly call it a devotional, but it is divided into 100 different topics ranging from 2-4 pages. Each ends with a question or writing prompt for further reflection.

The author, Leeana Tankersley, describes the book as a collection of reminders “of who we are and who God is” that she hopes “will companion you as you step into each new moment on your particular path.”

Always We Begin Again seems like it would be a great book to give as a gift to someone who needs some little sparks of encouragement to keep moving in the midst of life’s challenges.

This book is divided into 100 short, bite sized readings on beginning again. While some of them were really good, a lot of them I did not identify with. I still wonder about the premise, “always we begin again” and wonder if it is Scriptural. Also, I could not call this a devotional, because many readings had no Scripture in them at all. Each reading did have a question or prayer to fill in at the end.

While this book would be good for those who are struggling with “Soul Bullies” and addictions and brokenness, I found it hard to read. Leanna Tankersley, however, does write with a warm and welcoming tone and is very encouraging. I just think it is not appropriate for my life at this time.

Are you looking for a devotional that is interactive in nature? Then “Always We Begin Again: Stepping into the Next, New Moment” by Leeana Tankersley is the book for you. This devotional has 100 devotions that range in topic. After each of the 100 devotions, the author has questions for you to think about and answer. The best part is that she has included some space right below the question where you can write down your answer. Also, I like that she has a contents section in the front of the book that lists the title of each of the devotionals so you can mark your favorites there and then easily know what page they are on when you want to go back and read them again.

When I took at look at this book's title, "Always We Begin Again", I thought it sounded very interesting. What I didn't realize is that the author, Leeana Tankersley, wrote this as a devotional. We are met with one hundred days of readings that do not take long at all to read. Each one gives thought-provoking questions along with quotes and/or scripture that goes along with the reading. I suggest this book for anyone looking for a devotional that they can work on consistently. I highly suggest that you have a pen or pencil ready, so you can write down notes inside the book or in a notebook. I loved reading this book and I think you will too.

“Always We Begin Again,” a challenging, inspiring and thought-provoking quote by St. Benedict, is the rich source of inspiration for the title of Leanna Tankersley’s book, appropriately subtitled “Stepping into the Next, New Moment.” This is a soulful and sacred invitation to anchor you to your true identity. A tender, powerful book, with a unique blend of candid honesty and expectant, soul-refreshing hope, it is an inspirational treasury of hope, filled with grace, that invites us to rest, renew and refresh ourselves, as we step into the next, new moment of each new day. It’s a challenge but one worth taking. I encourage you to read this life-transforming book.

This author has such a way with words. Truly beautiful. And I think it was Ike talking to her over coffee every morning. Just resonated a lot. Grateful to have found this devotional....because it was perfect for me, having just moved to a new city and taking a plunge into self employment....beginning again! Would highly recommend.

It’s probably better than I give it credit for. I listened to it on audio, and it’s difficult to really appreciate a book that is set up in many short chapters, kind of in a devotional style. You can write and think and journal along with the chapters, but that is cumbersome on audio, as I am driving to work, for instance. Probably in paper form, it’s great.

A lovely and uplifting book from the heart, drawing from personal experience with relatable themes for anyone who is struggling in their life, either with mental health, external circumstances or a combination of both. This is a comforting book that will hold your hand through these experiences, enable you to develop self love and a stronger connection with the Divine.

I loved this. Each of these daily readings are enjoyable, easy to read and gives you something to think about. I enjoyed reading these in the morning each day and some of them really gave me things to ponder all day long.

This is an awesome way to get reconnected with God helping you along the way. Wish it was 365 instead of 100. Thank you Good Reads for letting me win this book.

I’ve been slowly making my way through this devotional. Each day contains a gem or two. I loved her book Begin Again, highly recommended. This is a good follow up reminder.

So much of this sounds like her other books but still plenty of good nuggets.

I recently read a fabulous devotional by Leeana Tankersley called Always We Begin Again- Stepping into the Next, New Moment. The devotional is a 100 day devotional journal with Bible verses and inspirational quotes about positivity and deepening your relationship with God and yourself.

I loved this book. I found it very helpful and uplifting. One of my favorite devotions was “Day 34, Threshold.” As someone who sometimes has a hard time crossing thresholds, this section was relatable to me. It talks about no matter how difficult of a challenge you are facing, God is always with you no matter what and he will guide you through it.

All in all, this book was fantastic, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs some inspiration, has a love of God and wants to deepen his or her faith or is just interested in checking it out.

I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion and thoughts on the book or the content of my review.

Thank you to Revell for the free review copy. All opinions are my own.

What a wonderful and refreshing this book is. It is set up as a daily devotional, which the author takes you through the process of beginning again. This is not always easy. While the daily readings are short, they are full of the gospel and vulnerability and wisdom.

She makes you think and there's always a place to reflect at the end of the reading. Sometimes, these are easy and directly towards something. Other times, the tasks are harder, making the reader dig deep and reflect on the seasons and situations they are going through currently. I loved having a pencil handy (I'm not someone to write in books, so if I am, that should tell you how good it is) while reading this. I was able to underline and respond in the moment to help me work through some things that I need to begin again with.
