In bestselling author Vanessa Kelly's irresistible Clan Kendrick series, Christmas in the Highlands means family, celebration—and for one brother, the beginning of a passionate adventure...
Being thrown over by the man she expected to marry was humiliating enough. Now that Donella Haddon, grandniece of the Earl of Riddick, has also proven a failure as a nun, she has no choice but to return to her family's estate. The brawny Highlander sent to escort her is brash, handsome, and the only thing standing between Donella and a gang of would-be kidnappers. But the scandal in her past can't be so easily outrun...
Wealthy widower Logan Kendrick was expecting to meet a plain, pious spinster—not a gorgeous, sharp-tongued lass who can hold her own in any ambush. Though she's known as the Flower of Clan Graham, Donella is no shrinking violet. In fact, she might be the perfect woman to bring happiness back to his lonely little son's life, just in time for Christmas. But first he must protect her from ugly gossip and a mysterious threat—and convince her that their wild, unexpected desire is heaven sent.

An amusing but typical Scottish historical romance. It took some time for this hero to grow on me😅 he’s a hot head. But well executed dialogue, characters and plot.
Donella Haddon is one month away from becoming a nun at the Convent of the Sacred Heart when Mother Superior calls her into her office. She is informed that she will not be a nun. In fact, Donella is being kicked out of the nunnery. Mother Superior lets Donella know that she has already written the Earl of Riddick, Donella's uncle, with her final decision. She will depart as soon as an escort from the earl arrives.
Logan Kendrick is negotiating business with the earl when he asks Logan to please escort his grand niece home from the nunnery. Since it is on his way, he agrees. When Logan meets Donella, he finds a fiery, intelligent lass, not a drab spinster. They get into the carriage to start on the road to Blairgal Castle, the Earl of Riddick's home. They are no sooner on their way then they are set upon by highwaymen. Except, these men don't act like highwaymen. They have come to abduct Donella. Logan has no intention of letting a kidnapping happen on his watch. Donella puts in her two cents and then fights against onf the kidnappers trying to pull her out of the carriage. Logan with a footman and the coach driver fight off the other six kidnappers. Thanks to Logan and circumstances, the abduction is deterred. He has them all depart quickly for the posting inn.
I enjoyed this novel. I especially liked the dialogue. The characters were quirky and fun. The main characters were well matched. Donella with her personal and clan secrets. Logan with his guilt over the death of his brother's son, and over not being a father to his own son. The interactions between the two protagonists were guarded and at times, electrifying. The plot and subplots kept the story moving forward. I understand from reading other reviews that this novel is not only the second book in the series, but also incorporates two other series by the same author. I did not find this hampered the reading of this novel. It works well as a standalone.

Series: Clan Kendrick #2 Publication Date: 11/1/19 Number of Pages: 432
This second book in the series can easily be read as a stand-alone as long as you realize that there are many characters that are crossovers from other series as well as those that are included in this series. There are characters from How to Marry a Royal Highlander (The Renegade Royals series) and The Highlander's Princess Bride (The Improper Princesses series). The Kendrick family was introduced and featured in The Highlander’s Princess Bride. You’ll love the Kendrick’s although you’ll want to lock grandda in a closet and lose the key.
Donella Haddon has had a life of many upheavals, scandals, and turmoil. After the last scandal, all she wanted was a quiet life and she sincerely thought becoming a nun was the way for her to go. However, after three years, and just one month before she was to take her final vows, she was called to the Reverend Mother’s office and told that she just wasn’t going to be able to continue as a nun. Though Donella begged to stay, the Reverend Mother was adamant. Donella was to leave the convent just as soon as her uncle could make arrangements for her to travel home.
We met Logan Kendrick in the earlier books, but it was lovely to really get to know him in this book. He is a widower who is still guilt-ridden from the death of his older brother, Nick’s, son. Having a six-year-old son of his own now, he feels that guilt, again and again, every time he sees Nick. Logan exiled himself to the Canadian wilderness after the child’s death and became quite wealthy there. He met his wife, fell in love, married, had a child, and then lost his wife in just a few scant years. Now, he and Nick have resolved their differences, except for Logan’s guilt, and Logan is back in Scotland for a while growing his shipping and timber business.
Logan had been trying to work a deal with the Earl of Riddick who was a powerhouse in Scotland’s timber industry. So, when the man asked Logan if he’d make a short side-trip on one of his journeys and escort his great-niece home from a convent, Logan agreed. We can only say that the young woman he picked up wasn’t at all what he was expecting!
The journey began to go downhill right from the beginning when they were waylaid by seven men bent on kidnapping Donella. Escape was a narrow thing and the attempts didn’t stop. As their journey continued, Logan learned what a strong, self-reliant, confident young woman she was – and he quickly came to admire her. Even after they reached their destination, the excitement didn’t end. If you add in former loves, vicious gossips, and insane mothers, you have a lively, and fun read.
Again, as with the previous books I’ve read by the author, there was a lot of anachronistic verbiage and that always throws me off. I liked Donella better than Ainsley (heroine from the last book), but she still got on my nerves. Why do authors always seem to equate being a strong, forthright, intelligent and independent woman with being rude and foolhardy? That scene in the first kidnapping attempt is a prime example – evidently, she didn’t care if she got captured or got Logan or one of the others killed or injured. She just had to have her say and be the one in charge. I also didn’t care for grandda. I know I’m supposed to think his antics are funny, but I don’t. He is hurtful, rude, and disrespectful.
The bottom line, it was a lovely, fun, fast-paced read and I enjoyed it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Near to Christmas 1819, and Donella Haddon, the Flower of Clan Graham, who'd fled to a convent three years before when her engagement ended has just been given a shock. Now the convent is returning her. It seems that her vocation is in doubt, if not dead in the water. Logan Kendrick, a wealthy widower has returned from Canada to more firmly establish his Shipping business. He been negotiating financial matters with Lord Ruddick and agrees to escort his grandniece home. What he doesn't agree to is defending her from a kidnapping attempt. Not that Donella wanted to be kidnapped either. So fleeing from the brigands is their main priority. I very much enjoyed Logan and Donella's interactions that ranged from humorous to pointed. They "fashed" each other continually. And when clan business became involved things became even more obscure. Of course they were drawn to each other but these two had enough secrets and regrets to sink the Titanic. Logan's first impressions of Donella is that she's a snippy lass, "She was all business and as tart as a lemon ice. Logan was quite fond of lemon ice. “ I loved the way Donella struck out at the gossips and the prejudiced. But that often served to fuel the many rumors even more Fortunately things worked out, just not in the normal way. Angus was still the old curmudgeon he'd always been in earlier stories, and just has the right knack for escalating things. Thanks to t Kendrick ladies paths were smoothed and some gossip smothered. And "Hogmanay, when they rang in the New Year", was entered into with all guns blazing. An enjoyable Highlander historical romance!
A new author for me! This books is 2nd in the Clan Kendrick series.
Donella is being cast out of the convent, the nuns saying she just doesn't have what it takes. Our hero Logan is the one to escort her back to her family. This couple gets roped into all sorts of scenarios together. You might like it if you like action, lots of characters, and/or Scottish romance. If you've read this author prior and have enjoyed, I'm guessing you would enjoy this as well.
Me, however. I was not a fan. I am abandoning this book at 55%. I feel nothing but annoyance. I don't care about the people, I'm overwhelmed by the large cast of characters, there's no tension to me and too many other things that have yet to be addressed or resolved for me to hope I will come to care for them in the last 45%.
I was able to receive an ARC copy complimentary from netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
***EXTREME SPOILERS*** ***THE NITTY GRITTY OF MY DISLIKES***
Donella Haddon retired to a convent 3 years ago when her cousin Alec, who is her betrothed, married another woman and her mother tried to kill him, but now the nuns have decided that Donella doesn’t have a true calling and have asked her to leave. Her uncle Earl Riddick is in business negotiations with Logan Kendrick and asks him to escort Donella home.
Logan Kendrick has only recently returned to Scotland after many years of self-imposed exile in Canada after the death of his brother Nick’s son. But his time is Canada wasn’t all self-crimination – Logan built a successful business, married his love, who also happened to be his partner’s daughter and fathered a son. He lost his wife shortly after his son Joseph’s birth and hasn’t stopped grieving. But when he meets Donella, there is no denying the attraction between them. However, things do not start out well and almost as soon as they start out for her uncle’s, they are set upon and the Murray’s attempt to kidnap Donella. Logan is forced to abandon the coach and take Donella into the wilderness. After a grueling journey, they finally arrive at a cottage and take shelter and wait for Alec to arrive to take Donella home. When Alec arrives and finds them in the bed, he demands that Logan marry her – she refuses and they part.
Logan returns home and finds out that his grandfather had returned from Canada with his son. Although he was scared that Nick would be upset, everyone immediately accepts him. But he is still a little quiet around everyone.
Back with her family, Donella tries to convince her family to let her join another convent, but they insist that she go to the family home and prepare a Christmas celebration – since Evie (Alec’s English wife) celebrates and so does Donella since she is a catholic. They send her to stay with the Kendrick’s until Alec and Evie can join her. At the Kendrick’s she immediately bonds with Joseph and grows closer to Logan. It appears that they are on track to their own HEA, but not everyone is happy with that plan. Former lovers and loves will interfere and secrets may tear them apart if they can’t find a way to move on from their pasts.
I thought this was a pretty good story, it did seem to drag a bit and I don’t know if I completely believe Logan is truly in love – the man seems to “fall in love” at the drop of a hat, so I don’t know if I trust his love is true. I did enjoy catching up with Nick, Victoria, Alec and Evie, as well as getting to know Donella. She was likeable, but a bit misguided. I loved her interactions with Joseph and was touched by the bond between them. This is the second book in the series, but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone title.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher.*
4.5* This is such a wonderful book about two people who have suffered through years of guilt and or grief. To finally find forgiveness and peace and a future that they did not think they deserved or would ever find. Donella Haddon is a strong highlander lass that knows her own mind but is conflicted with her past blunders that she’s feeling very guilty about and imposes her own punishment. Logan Kendrick is full of love and strength but because of a past mistake, he’s lived a life of guilt. He feels that he does not deserve the love that surrounds him or a future he so craves. Logan agrees to escort Donella back home to her family. They both feel an instant connection but neither feels they deserve a life outside their self imposed punishment. When trouble turns up Logan vows to do whatever it takes to get Donella to safety. Throughout their time together they begin to see that maybe they so deserve a life of love and family. That is until people from their past appear and threaten to end everything. Joseph is the light of this book. I have been waiting for Logan to finally get his HEA so I could meet Joseph. For all the loss that he's suffered in his young life, he is joyful, funny and very serious at times. He is adorable. This is such a great series and I can't wait down the next book.
"The Highlander's Christmas Bride" is a tasty holiday confection about Donella, a woman who finds herself back home after failing to become a nun like she originally planned. She is being protected by Logan Kendrick, a man who is not expecting to have to protect someone like Donella. She is not a weak, fainting lady. Logan quickly realizes that the unexpected is just what he needs.
We still have just under two months until Christmas and with the weather starting to feel chilly, I've been looking for books like this one to warm me up. Romance just feels really good to read as a bit of an escape when the holiday rush starts. When I saw Vanessa Kelly's name on this book, I knew that I would be in good hands!
This is the second book in the Clan Kendrick series but it is very much a standalone book and you don't need to have read the previous books. This book has a lot of the hallmarks of Vanessa Kelly's other books such as the great romance between our main characters, Logan and Donella. I loved seeing how these characters grew throughout the book and how their relationship changed throughout the book. This was certainly a festive way to welcome the season!
After her betrothed returned home to marry another woman and the resulting family scandal, Donella Haddon left home to join a convent. But just shy of become a nun she is given no choice but to leave the convent and find a new direction for her life. Logan Kendrick is tasked with escorting her home from the convent to her family estate. Their journey immediately finds trouble as their party is accosted by kidnappers, as the scandal from her past comes back to haunt her. __________________________
This is the first book from this author that I have read and I am so glad that I did. I'm going look into some other books/series by this author to add to my to-read list. In reading The Highlander's Christmas Bride, I already feel invested in this family and will be going back to read the first in the series to learn more about them as well as looking forward to more books being added. That being said, it is not necessary to have read the first in the series to before reading The Highlander's Christmas Bride, as this book can serve as a stand-alone.
I loved all the characters in this book, but especially Logan, Donella, and Joseph. Logan and Donella were just such relatable characters. Plus banter! They were flawed and the mistakes thade with their dealings with each other stemmed from a place of insecurity, which made them all the more relatable. The relationship between the two of them wasn't rushed and went so much deeper than simply two people thrown together on a life-threatening journey; this was simply a starting point for them.
5 stars, I recommend this book to fans of historical romance and a good adventure. This book will be getting its own spot on my favorites shelf. _______
I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for sharing an eARC of The Highlander's Christmas Bride by Venessa Kelly with me for reviewing purposes. This is my honest review.
This is the second book in the Clan Kendrick series, but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone title. Donella Haddon ran off to hide in a convent 3 years ago when her cousin Alec, who was her betrothed, married another woman. Her mother, a bit unstable, tried to kill him. The nuns have recently decided, dowry or not, Donella is not nun material and have asked her to leave. Her uncle, the Earl Riddick, has asked Logan Kendrick to escort her home. Logan is in the midst of business negotiations with the Earl, so agrees to his request. Expecting a rather plain, spinster, he is in for a surprise when he meets the bonny Donella. Logan Kendrick has recently returned to Scotland after many years of exile in Canada. While there, he built a business, married, had a son, and became a widower. He left his son behind with his grandparents when he headed back to Scotland. He has decided that he has no desire to marry again. There is a lot that happens on the way home from the convent and Logan becomes enamoured with the snippy, yet beautiful Donella. She is determined to find another convent to enter as she does not want to marry, yet does not want to live as a spinster either. Evading a couple of kidnapping attempts, Logan and Donella finally make it home.
Donella and Logan both assume that their lives will go on and they will not see one another again, but fate steps in. I enjoyed the rather clumsy encounters these two had. When Logan's son, Joseph is brought to Scotland by his great-grandfather, Logan changes. He becomes kinder and gentler. When he watches the interactions between Donella and Joseph, he gets a little jealous that he does not have such an easy relationship with his son. Watching them both fight the feelings they have for one another is rather cute. With everyone else in both families trying to push them together, you know they will eventually end up with a happily ever after. With some English in the family, Christmas must be celebrated, even thought the highlanders usually celebrate Hogmany. With the parties and dances, they get more opportunities to be together and their banter is always interesting. Of course there has to be some angst and some secrets to get in the way and there are quite a few. Gossip from the jealous women almost ruins everything, but true love will overcome. It was fun catching up with the characters from the first book, but as I said earlier, you don't need to read the first one to enjoy this one. I recommend this one to those who enjoy romance, especially Highland romance.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Ruth Urquhart and enjoyed it. I actually did a read/listen so there were times I read the ebook, and times I listened to the audiobook. I liked Ruth Urquhart's voice, including the accents and brogue. She did a decent job with the male voices (which I don't often say) and a great job with Donella. Her expression was wonderful and certainly added to my enjoyment of the book. I will look for more books, especially those in Scotland and the Highlands, narrated by her. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

My review :
Can two persons who are running away from their troubled past find a second chance together.
It is my first read by Mrs Vanessa Kelly, and even if it is second in a series, it can be read as a standalone. After for what I understand, the side characters are part of a grander story, going further than the first installment of this series.
It was such an entertaining and delightful read, with aplenty of witty banters, meddling characters, non-stop actions and a slow-burn romance. After three years in a couvent, Donella finds herself thrown out just one month before taking her vows. This is one too many more failure for her. Between her failed betrothal, this new shortcoming and her past behavior, she is now unable to decide what she will do. Nothing appeals her really. Still she is no meek lady nor damsel-in-distress. She gives as much as she takes. Although she voices loudly her discontent, she is not one to act stupidly. She knows when she is overtaken. I loved her feisty personality, she is no charming miss, she fires quips and snarks as a bow darts. But she is a caring woman, who immediately take under her wing a lost little boy. Logan Kendrick reshaped himself in a different man when the tragedy of his past forced him to leave everything behind. He loved and lost. Now he is a wealthy man, back to Scotland to conduct his business. If not for the would-have-been a nun he must convey back to her family’s home. This almost-nun awakens desires he buried long ago, but the more they banter the more he can’t shake her out of his mind. Worse, his own son is soon taken under her spell. I loved Logan, he is a good man but he can’t stop from making a muddle of things, trying to do the right thing but almost every time it backfires to his face. It is their inability to handle their relationship rightly that makes them so lovable, each of their meetings is a challenge, when it goes well, something comes in to derail everything or their temper flares, and sparks fly. It was not a rushed romance, they get time to know each other, to question their own purposes.
Mrs Kelly gave to her characters so much sparks it brought them to life. They act and react, not always the right way but they do not bend. Donella’s secret was easy to figure out, I do think it was a lot of fuss but I do understand too, because of the time period, it caused Donella many worries. Logan’s answering to its revelation was the perfect one of a man caring about her.
5 stars for this clever and enjoyable tale with two strongly stubborn and ill-adapted for society’s life characters. I was granted an advance copy through Netgalley by the publisher Kensington, I also prior to it preordered my own copy. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Another excellent book in the series. Donella and Logan were perfect! I loved Joseph who is so sweet. I loved that this was a bit of an adventure at first but then It slowed down and was just two people getting to know each other and falling in love! Perfect! Can’t wait for the next one!
She'll never be a nun. But, she was oh, so close. Fairly well kicked out of the convent, Donella Haddon, grandniece of the Earl of Riddick, is about to return to her family home.
The highlander sent to collect Donella is Logan Kendrick. Accompanied by two grooms, after a day or two, Logan hopes to have deposited to woman at her family's estate. Nothing like that happens, however. Instead, more than a few days pass, and they face grave danger.
Logan wonders why Donella was sent to the convent in the first place, and why she has been sent away. He discovers that she is called the Flower of Clan Graham and that she has an unlikely past. For now, it is Christmas, and preparations are in order. Meanwhile, Logan has another surprise in front of him. That is in the form of his six-year-old son, who he hadn't seen in a year. Logan's wife died years before, and the child remained at his grandparents home in Canada.
Now, his son is there, and Donella is there, helping the family set up for Christmas. Logan now has two battles on his hands. For one thing, he doesn't know how to draw close to his son. What is more is that he is truly drawn to Donella. Although he seeks to court her, he must first stem the ugly gossip that always seems to be chasing her.
This is a story of second chances. It is a second chance for Donella to escape a troubled past. It is also a chance for Logan to let memories of his first wife go and to focus on being a good father. Instrumental in this development is the fact that his son falls head over heels in love with Donella. Their interactions were incredibly touching in this story.
If you long strong heroines in historical romance stories, look no further. Donella is the best of the sort. The troubles that she has dealt with in the past, as well as the things she must deal with now show amazing strength. I loved watching the two of them grow to love one another.
This truly enjoyable story is the second in the Clan Kendrick series. The first book is The Highlander Who Protected Me. This story was rich with characters from that book, and the next book in the series is The Highlander's English Bride, due for release in May, 2020.
Many thanks to Zebra and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
*This mass market paperback release also includes a bonus novel by Annie Raines, Christmas on Mistletoe Lane, and previously review link is: https://www.robinlovesreading.com/201...
What an entertaining read!!! I enjoyed this one very much!
Donella Haddon fled to a convent after her engagement ended and now the convent doesn't believe she belongs there and have asked her to leave amidst scandals and rumors. Logan Kendrick returns from Canada for business agrees to escort Donella back home and got in the middle of a kidnapping, and this was just the beginning.
I enjoyed this story line very much and thought it was exciting, moved fast, had a lot of adventure/action sequence too that kept the pacing of the story moving well. Donella and Logan’s chemistry were great and love how their characters were written. Though I don’t have the backstory of the Kendrick family, it worked for me as a stand alone. I will definitely be going back to read the Highlander’s Princess Bride to learn more about the Kendrick clan. Some of the language threw me off, but I really loved it for its Scottish feel and authenticity.
Thank you to @kensingtonbooks and @netgalley for the ARC copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book and all opinions are my own.
The Highlander's Christmas Bride is the second book in the Clan Kendrick series by Vanessa Kelly. Although part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone book.
Donella Haddon joined a convent after she was involved in a scandal. She thought the best place for her would be away from everything. Unfortunately, life as a nun wasn't to be for her, she was hurt when before she could become a full-fledged nun she was advised to go back out into the world and truly decide if a nun's life was for her.
Wealthy widower Logan Kendrick offered to fetch Donella from the convent. He figured doing a favour for her great-uncle, the Earl of Riddick would stand him in good stead when it came to convincing Riddick to do business with him. He expected a plain Jane, a quiet, reserved young lady would be under his protection for the journey. He was very surprised to discover that Donella was the complete opposite of everything he expected.
The journey home didn't go as he expected either. Failed kidnap attempts for Donella by the family that still believes she owes them after the scandal 3 years ago caused drama and delay to their journey. Thankfully they make it to Riddick safely. In the time they spent together an attraction forms.
That attachment grows with leaps forward and backwards throughout the story with some amusing moments, and some that pulled on the old heartstrings. Donella would like to move forward with Logan but then she remembers the secret she is hiding and dreads him finding out about it. Surely he won't still want her when he discovers it, and it seems that he will do when gossip starts to circulate, not to mention the possibility that an attempt could be made to kidnap her again.
There was a lot going on in this story, and I don't want to give spoilers by telling you each subplot, suffice to say that each character's story fits nicely into forming what could make or break a future for Logan and Donella. I loved Logan's son Joseph, and his father Fergus, with the latter being quite fun. Donella's great uncle and the whole clan are wonderful with their protection of her. Even the kidnappers have a story that makes you not want to set Logan onto them!! Add the fact that some of the story is set over Christmas and the new year festivities with talk of the gorgeous clothes and the merrymaking and it makes this book even more fabulous.
I really enjoyed this book and its perfect ending.
Bring on the adventure. Step into the romance. Escape into the unknown. The Highlander's Christmas Bride pushes the hot buttons of the heart with an imaginative blend of intrigue, romance and danger. Kelly delivers a tale of passion, a battle of hope and a leap of faith, that speaks to the romantic soul. Donella and Logan refused to be tamed. My heart wouldn't have it any other way.
After three years in a convent and a few months shy of taking her final vows, Donella Haddon was dismissed and told to go home to Blairgal Castle. Logan Kendrick started a shipping and trading company while in Canada, and he hopes to do business with Donella's great-uncle, the Earl of Riddick. So when the earl asked him to escort Donella as a favour, Logan could hardly refuse. It's only a two-day journey, or it should have been, had they not met with villains along the way determined to kidnap Donella.
THE HIGHLANDER'S CHRISTMAS BRIDE is such a fun book, filled with adventures, romance, and fabulous characters! Donella is a splendid heroine: she's so vital, energetic, and protective. Donella was definitely not a good fit for the convent, even though she tried so very hard. She's proper and dignified, but certainly not meek; when the chips are down, she's someone you want on your side, and she fit right in with the Kendricks. I loved that, however defiant she was, she was not reckless. She is made of stern stuff, she felt like a real person, and so does Logan. He is a giant of a man, playfully flirty without coming on too strong; he is charming and understanding, but not always the best at expressing himself. Both Logan and Donella are extremely engaging characters, she knows she can be difficult and acknowledges the fact, and Logan actually finds it amusing.
The romance progressed gradually, starting with Logan and Donella's laborious trek home. This is so beautifully done, as Vanessa Kelly takes us on a little tour of the Scottish countryside, and her wonderful descriptions made me long to be there. It didn't feel like a travelogue, but like a special treat to share with friends. Logan and Donella's road to a happily ever after is not the easiest, with the boisterous Kendricks and old clan feuds, but it is a very pleasant and entertaining one. I think it's a question of balance: the dangers are believable; the characters are not perfect and feel entirely genuine, and no one is perpetually blinded by raging lust; they act like rational people! I adored Logan's grandfather Angus, and little Joseph, Logan's six year-old son.
Ms. Kelly's prose flows effortlessly, and the dialogues are positively brilliant; I caught myself giggling at some heated exchanges. I will never forget the passage with the pigeons; it's priceless! And I'm so grateful that Vanessa Kelly remembers Scotland's strong connection to Canada. THE HIGHLANDER'S CHRISTMAS BRIDE is a delightful holiday romance, but the Christmassy atmosphere is not so overwhelming that the story can be enjoyed any time of the year. Happy reading!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Even though I have been very aware of Ms Kelly’s books for a while and have quite a few on my bookshelf/kindle shelf, this is actually the first time I have actually sat down and read her work – believe me, I have been missing out on something here, I can definitely assure you that as soon as possible those books I already have will be devoured. This is the second book in the Clan Kendrick series, as I haven’t read the first book, yet I can honestly say that it is very much a stand-alone, even though I did sense that was interwoven character’s and subplots from the previous, not that it affect this story at all, it just gave me a glimpse that there is more to this series. I love the opening of this, where we first meet heroine; Donella as she is being practically chucked out of the convent she had been taking refuge in for the last three years, her behaviour isn’t exactly pious, she really isn’t nun material she is far too spirited and little feral, she doesn’t do silence and obedience. But now she has been pushed from the convent she must return home, back to that old life of scandal, which she had fled from in the first place. Her escort home isn’t what she had expected her uncle to send, he is brusque, brawny, and too darn sexy for his own good (too damn sexy for anyone, to be honest, honestly I may have swooned on the spot ;-)) Logan Kendrick has been trying to garner a deal between his own shipping business with the powerful Ear of Riddick who own one of the biggest and most powerful timber houses in Scotland, but before they can shake and make the deal the earl asks him for a favour, to escort his niece home from her recluse in the convent. Simple enough, only once he meets vibrant, fiery and stunning Donella Logan has an inkling that his life may just change forever, and this is before they come face to face with kidnappers. As you would expect their journey doesn’t exactly go to plan, as Logan tries to protect her from the bugger’s who are trying their damndest to abduct her, Logan soon sees the pretty young miss as more then just an irritating opinionated sprite, she is rebellious, fiery, brave and strong-willed and he admires her greatly, admiration that soon develops into something else, something far more primal. I won’t go into their adventure too much, as I wouldn’t wish to spoil the story for you, let me say that this is a corker, the energy and banter between Logan and Donella is electric, sexy and funny, but there is more to this coupe then their good looks, they are both scarred by skeletons’ which they have lurking in their pasts, skeletons that have made them the people they are. The only thing I didn’t like about it was Grandpa, he is vile, I think that his character was supposed to be a funny old man who spits out nonchalant barbs every so often to lighten the mood, but I so him as hugely hurtful and despicable man, I really took against him the moment I met him. I really enjoyed Ms Kelly’s writing, there is a real vibrancy and spark in her words which grasp’s hold of the reader’s attention. This is a very cleverly written, richly detailed, entertaining and enjoyable story. It’s hugely engaging and the character’s captivated my attention from the first page, I loved the story about two individuals who had seen the darker side of society only to become a little jaded yet they had a thirst to find their own feet and find happiness just in time for Christmas. Overall, a fun, sexy and adventurous festive romance, that is far then just swooning debutantes and men in breeches (not that there is anything wrong with breeches clad regency men ;-))
First Thought: "Love me a Scottish brogue but the phonetic spelling is an ick. It's okay tho because I love my Highlander men!!"
Final Thought: "I really wanted to give this 4 stars. But the ML fucked it up."
Let's a talk about about what went well. There's a lot of things! ✨ 19th century Scotland ✨ Single-dad with a NATIVE AMERICAN SON ✨ Ex-nun spinster FL ✨ Protective and lovable family ✨ Christmas !! (I am a devout Muslim and never celebrated it but I grew up in NYC, no one does Xmas like New Yorkers) ✨ THE SON IS THE BEST ✨ FL and ML go through some zany adventures to get back home in the first quarter of the book ✨ ONE 👏 BED 👏 ✨ OW drama. (I love drama ok just don't want it irl) ✨ Banter and humor was on point *chefs kiss* ✨ Secrets. Secrets. SECRETS!!! ✨ An actually entertaining mystery and big reveal that I'm not sure I would've found entertaining if I had read the other books in this series (or universe).
Ok let's see what fucked this up from a 4 to a 3: ✨ OW drama.
ML is an ASS. When he met the OW and basically abandoned FL on the dancefloor at an event where people are already wagging their tongues about the two of them? All I kept thinking of was BigKlit's infamous song, Liar, specifically the lines, " Why you lyin' on yo dick, lyin' on yo dick, He be talkin' shit 'cause he just wanna hit " with an accompaniment of the scene from the music video where BigKlit is cutting a phallic shaped banana into pieces and chasing her wretched ex through the streets.
" I smell cap. " asf
That single scene demolished all belief I had in their relationship. We already have the ghost of his dead wife hanging over-- and no, I am not from the camp of GR readers who think being someone's second or third love is fake. He talks a lot about how much he loved his wife, and we learn some things about her, but not a lot. But it's enough. I am happy there weren't MANY comparisons between his dead wife and his new beau. Not the way other single dads do it in other books. In a lot of dead wife books, the ML usually blames FL for not being his dead wife. Or for taking things away from her, like certain aspects of motherhood. Or denying their place in their kid's life because of insecurities. HE DIDN'T DO THAT AT ALL HERE. HE'S A GREAT (misguided) DAD.
It looks like most trauma he has is associated with the OW drama and the tragedy that forced him to go to Canada in the first place. Where he met his first wife and had his son. And that trauma is also child related.
But nahhhhhhhhhhh bruh the way he just dropped her like a bag of organic potatoes you accidentally grab because you didn't see the regular ass cheaper potatoes til later just PISSED. ME. OFF.
I believe that I have found one of my all time favorite historical romance authors. I picked this book on a whim for the holiday season and it was the best decision I have ever made. I teared up, I swooned and I enjoyed myself from the first sentence the the last. I could not recommend this book enough!
I really liked this book! I felt like their romance was fully realized and I was very much convinced they were in love in a way that was both adequately passionate and adequately tender. I love the “dressed as a boy” trope always, so that was nice as well. This felt like each character had dark past details on dark past details but it was cleverly unraveled in such a way that it didn’t bog you down. The detail of his son from a previous marriage who had mixed heritage was an interesting touch and it was handled with adequate sensitivity.

I wish the "villain" of the story had a bit more oomph/umph, but beyond that I am thoroughly DELIGHTED, ENCHANTED, and have filled my CAMP QUOTA. Big recommend but take this rave with a grain of salt, as I have *no* idea what I'm talking about RE historical romances, lass.
A beautiful holiday romance that is sure to sweep any reader off their feet. Cheery, spunky and full of merriment, this one will be staying in my library long after the holidays are over. 5/5 stars
Love a good romance with fiesty heroines putting sexy Scottsmen in their places. All with a dash of suspense, sweet little children and that Scottish brogue! Yes please.
3 stars! This is the second book in the Clan Kendrick series. I liked both Logan and Donella, but the story was just an okay read for me. It didn't wow me. Unfortunately, I found myself skimming some parts at the beginning even though the book starts of in its first chapters with an adventure for our two MCs. They suffer through some failed kidnapping attempts, yet it still felt underwhelming. There was a lot of bantering and clashing of wills between them that at some point I was bored with their behavior. She insisted that she did not need any help or that she could take care of herself when in reality she was putting both of them at risk. Half way through the book there's a misunderstanding between them, which I thought would add more drama to their relationship, it was resolved too soon. The amount of characters, which I understand are from other books, were a little overwhelming. At moments I had a hard time keeping track of who was married to who and how where they related to Logan or Donella. I will continue with the series, because I loved the first book of this series.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for an honest review.
This title moved along rather slowly for me, but I did like both Donella and Logan. I do wish I had read the previous title as sometimes I felt a little lost.
*I received an eARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't really able to get into this book. The characters were flat and didn't seem to have any chemistry. Secondary characters were fairly interchangeable and did nothing to help the plot along. The plot itself was plodding. What should have made this book stand out: a young woman kicked out of a convent and attempted abductions didn't keep the pace (or my interest) going the way I had expected. I hope others have a better reaction to this book, I found it too boring to be a good time.
