Max Axiom Decoding Genes
by Amber J Keyser, Al Milgrom, Matt Webb and Krista Ward

The Max Axiom is a series of science comic graphic novels that are presented in such a way as to draw the attention and capture the minds of young reads to what ordinarily would be a complex subject to convey and understand. The Max Axiom science series makes learning about science fun and interesting, even I enjoyed reading this edition and they all seem to appeal to me. This particular edition "Decoding Genes" is geared toward 7th graders but surely it can have a broader audience of 5th grade to adult. I included older age groups because some of the terms and scientific names of elements discussed will be new vocabulary and should be focused on more closely. In this issue Max explores heredity, the study of heredity is called genetics. In 1860 Gregor Mendel through his experiments with pea plants, lead the discovery to genetics. Humans draw their physical and mental characteristics or traits from genes which they receive from their parents. In this issue, this Max Axiom will describe and break down the gene into its intricate parts. The gene is made up of atoms, each atom having a nucleus which contains DNA, which is made up of Chromosomes. This science series of graphic novels have great illustrations which definitely help the reader to grasp this complex topic.

Decoding Genes with Max Axiom Super Scientist by Amber J. Keyser, illustrated by Tod G. Smith and Al Milgrom – Graphic Novel- elementary school/middle school – I felt like I understood and learned more about genes after reading this novel. It was pretty fascinating. Love how the facts, dialogue, and non-fiction text intermingle with the graphic novel format.

Great overview of the basics of genetics and DNA transcription. My kids really like any type of graphic novel so these books are especially appealing.
