Taken in the night. Kidnapped for her light. Keeley Moore is just trying to survive.
After thirteen-year-old Keeley Moore disappears during a camping trip with her parents, psychic Charlie Payne is invited to work the case by the local deputy. But the connection Charlie makes with the girl is a gossamer thread.
If Charlie didn't know better, she'd say someone is blocking the child's energy from reaching her. Someone with a connection to the supernatural. One thing Charlie is certain of—Keeley's light is fading. Once it goes out, it will be too late to rescue her.
To find the girl in time, Charlie must push the boundaries of magic. Her psychic abilities can peer into the light and dark, but now she must plumb the gray depths between the two. The question is, can she save the girl without losing herself to the darkness surrounding Keeley?
The WITCHES OF PALMETTO POINT is a fun, fluffy series that centers on family, food, and good southern manners.
In book #7 the author finally introduces some people of color. Doing it so late in a series is sorting of grating, but this is probably a personal thing.
I've read this series in a fairly short time span and with CAPTIVE SOULS I finally had to take a break... or three. One of the problem with obsessive reading is that any shortcomings, however small, will come to light. In this case I had to come up for air from the literary rut the book and I were in.
This is not to say that there weren't some real developments in this book. I mean Charlie and her mother-in-law actually speak civilly to one another and Penny (the ghost chicken) helps save the day.
I love this series because I feel like I am so attached to this family of southern witches and their diverse group of friends and loved ones. It’s all about family, love, loyalty, and spreading light. Oh yeah and also some great home cooking!
I don't care what anyone says ~ this series is amazing!!! People get irritated with the constant use of y'all ~ I'm from the south and we use it all-the-time😁
Three names come to mind reading this one: Stephen King, Danny Torrance and the True Knot. Having read and seen both the book and movie, "Doctor Sleep," I have to say old Steve ends "Doctor Sleep" better, even if basically the same end results occur in "Captive Souls." Ms. Wang is in such a hurry to finish the story, she breezes past those final plot details. The bad guys get what they deserve, but it's ... rushed ... the aftermath never detailed. You never even get to see Rudy and Jacob being hauled off after they're defeated. (Sorry for the spoiler. What, you thought Charlie wouldn't prevail?) With old Steve's penchant for detail, you just know he'd do better justice to the finale, adding as many extra pages and paragraphs as he felt it needed to be. I wish Wendy Wang wasn't in so damn much of a hurry to get done.
Couldn't she at least have spent a few extra minutes to let Charlie head back to her cell to retrieve her new kitten, instead of it just being obvious she did so after the fact?
By Book 7, endless repetition is dulling the senses. Every volume places protagonist psychic witch Charlie Payne in danger; in every volume she is either severely compromised and/or injured by traumatized spirits. Oddly, the last three books have placed children in danger as well, a serious step away from the family-friendly, good-natured, foodie vibe on which the author's initial popularity depended; this reviewer was gobsmacked that in Book 5 Wang placed a 6-year old girl, Charlie's own niece, in jeopardy when ghosts snatch her out of the mortal realm altogether, for much of the book; that felt uncomfortably out of the series' previous alignment. What works for snarkier versions of witch reads does not work here at all. By Book 7, the danger to children seems almost pornographic and definitely mercenary.
This poor author is also very seriously unedited; if anyone is actually reading these books with an eye toward cleaning them up, that effort is utterly incompetent. The faster she churns out each new story, the worse the unforced errors become. At points, she's incomprehensible just because important words are missing, or too many are added. "“I know you know you think he’s too young," is an example of too many words cluttering understanding. In "“You need to bed. Don’t you have to work tomorrow?” the phrase "go to" is missing. In "Once she had these kids to safety, she’d go after Keeley--"led" is missing.
Then there are the inexplicable extraneous commas: "A powerful, witch with the gift of sight," "Jen told him, after hearing, the good, the bad and the ugly about Lauren," and "Next to the desk Ben, had..." "Additionally, ALL plural nouns are given apostrophes indicative of possession: "It made Charlie sad to think what would happens to the Carver's when Marilyn died," and "Doesn't DOL have necromancer's on staff?"
She also throws into single sentences disconnected thoughts that should comprise two or even three sentences: "She insisted on going shopping in the pre-dawn hours to get in on the good deals and that Darius. I’ve never seen him refuse his grandmother,” and "Tomeka held her large purse close, a look of concern pinched her features and she wore no make-up and tortoise shell glasses.
The word "whom" never appears in any of these books: "he got sloppy with who he trusted."
Finally, she forgets what she wrote even on the previous page, or on the same page,or occasionally even in the same sentence; for example, Jen serves mashed potatoes and on the next page during the very same meal, Charlies "spears" a potato and jams it in her mouth. Good trick, even for a witch, to "spear" mashed potatoes in singular form. And in the same sentence? " She had two piercings, one in each of her lips and a nose ring." That's three, by any count.
Completely unrelated to anything, a second person of color, a superfluous ghost providing attempted comic relief as in Book One, appears very briefly in Book 5 to haunt an auction house; unbelievably, the author gives her the pancake syrup's racist moniker: Jemima. Finally in Book 7, however, the first substantial characters of color appear, no doubt because somebody alerted the author to their complete absence. Then, to add emphasis, the author initially describes Tomeka, a tarot interpreter, as having "a colorful tote bag" and a "brightly colored scarf" within a few sentences. Get it? COLOR, folks!
Call this reviewer seriously disillusioned but carrying on because it's witch season, and these reads are free on Kindle Unlimited.
This is a wonderful magical witches series to binge on during this awful pandemic. This story adds more dimension and another scary situation to the previous good stories and brings in two new, talented people to the cousins’ coven, Darius the herbalist, acupuncturist, necromancer and his tarot reading sister. I am delighted to see characters of color brought into in this Southern witches group.
This story takes us on another dangerous and mysterious journey to rescue a little girl who has been abducted by a bad magical group and is now trying to capture Charlie who is working to find her. I couldn’t put this book down and kept reading well past my bedtime to see what happens next. I was sorry to see the Chrystal ball get smashed to pieces but after those scary ghosts used it as a portal I would have smashed it too. It did make me wonder if there are real people who are able to do scrying or if it’s always been a circus act since the Chrystal ball has been part of magical culture for centuries. The author sometimes describes the history of certain practices or rituals and this is one of those times I would have liked to hear about that.
I absolutely love the ghost of Penny, the chicken, who now stands guard in the house, was happy about the introduction of Poe, the black kitten and gentle Tom is still one of my favorite characters.
This whole series, especially as Charlie teaches her son Evan about his innate, empathic abilities, has made me wonder about white witches and their long history to the point that I looked up what Wiccans actually do and believe and was startled to discover that I had so much in common with them. Their love of nature and devotion to the environment, herbs and healing and so much more. This series, with its many mysteries, plot twists, character interactions and dialogue that feel so real, is such a joy. Many thanks to the author for giving me so many pleasurable days and evenings during this depressing time of COVID.
I’m glad the author took the time to write the story of Keely separately. I will say upfront though, if you’ve suffered any trauma as a child, this one can be a bit uncomfortable to read at times. Not too bad, but enough that it could trigger flashbacks, and a huge array of feelings-especially if you’ve not dealt with the trauma. It’s been a good journey through these books so far, and the building of characters has been interesting. I’ve read a number of other series where I’ve lost interest by the 4th or 5th. Some of the biggest issues is if there’s too much repeat of previous books, causing you to feel as if it’s just filler. No one enjoys that, and quite honestly, the likelihood that someone is suddenly going to pick up a book midway through a series is slim. So I greatly appreciate her keeping this to a minimum. Looking forward to the next book.
4½. This is the best book so far in Witches of Palmetto Point! There was a lot of action & intrigue. I really liked the new characters introduced, especially Darius! I'm looking forward to the greater role the Department of Light is going to play now that Charlie works for them. The deeper the author dives into the world of witchcraft, the more sucked in I am! There were a few small grammatical & punctuation errors, but the only one who h really bugged me was when Charlie found the kitten, Poe, who is described as being female & then referred to as he\him for an entire page. Continuity errors of this type drive me nuts! Otherwise a very enjoyable read. Recommended.
This series is so good I broke my vow of never ever signing up for Kindle Unlimited. I was able to read books 1-6 with my Prime membership, and I was hooked!! After I finished the first 6 books I immediately looked up the rest of the series. To my dismay, they are out of my price range. I really wanted to continue the series (especially with the cliffhanger bk 6 ends in), so I broke down and signed up for KU. This series really does have everything. While it is fantasy, I can still totally relate with Charlie. Ex problems, custody problems, parenting worries, job worries, money/insurance worries, dating worries, etc. Makes Charlie such a real character. I can't wait go read the rest of the series!!!
Captivating addition to the series. Lots of advancement with characters, their powers and two new additions added to the “family”.
I didn't want to put this down once I started. Charlie has her hands full trying to save a girl who was taken by a cult who practices evil witch craft on young children. Everyone gets involved in the hunt from her cousins and their men, the Defenders of Light and the new additions brother and sister Darius and Tomeka who are practice their own magic. Even Charlie's son Evan finally gets to tag along and learn more about spells and witchcraft.
Lots of big changes by the end of the book and looking forward to seeing what's next.
When Keeley Moore disappears and can't be found Charlie Payne is called in to work with local authorities on the case. With her physic abilities she can get a read on the missing but something is blocking her. Charlie calls on some new witch friends to help her on the case and a with coven from local defense league. Everything is a big puzzle until Charlie goes missing herself with no trace. Her family joins forces with friends to figure out her location. If you like witches and evil creatures in a paranormal crime thriller the you need to read this story. I will be looking for more Josie Quinn books.
We get the rest of young Keeley's story, that started in Shadow Child, as well as see more growth of Charlie as a witch. I like that we learn more about the Defenders of Light and what they do. This one was really sad though. The BBEG had done so much damage before they were caught. I love seeing the build of Tom and Charlie's relationship too. I did not like the lack of follow up after the win. What happens to the BBEGs that started as victims, how are they punished, do their parents know they are still alive? That's the downside to this author. She leaves so many open endings to her plot. The stories are just so good though.

This series keeps getting better with every book. The characters are still developing and in this one, we meet several new witches. Great storyline that is well played out. Lots of dark magic in this one and if you are sensitive to children being abused, this might not be a good one for you to read. Can Charlie find Keeley before it's too late? I love that Charlie is learning what she is made of as she progresses. She's going to be a force to reckon with I believe! Highly recommend!
Another absolutely thrilling adventure with Charlie and her magical family!
Wendy Wang has done it again! Another exceptional addition to the Witches of Palmetto series! Vivid characters that feel like old friends, wildly exciting plot with lots of twists and galore and like always a great ending. Each book in the series is unique in it's own way so you never feel like it's the same thing over and over. I devour them all and can not wait for the next! 5 stars isn't enough
I have enjoyed each book in this series but this one by far was the best yet! I love the development of the characters and can't wait to see how Evan grows into his power. I also think the job that Charlie accepted will open up several interesting aspects for the series. The addition of Poe was great. Another great read provided by my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Absolutely loved having Charlie getting a familiar. Little Poe is perfect! Hope to read more about him in the future books. And he had some important parts in the story lines. This was a wonderful addition to the series! Full of action and extremely riveting. Couldn't seen to put it down for long. Fantastic series by an extraordinary author!
This series held together by magic and strong family ties. Each character is fully developed and I found myself getting emotional for them. My only pet peeve is the amount of unnecessary detail that the author adds. Personally, I don't need all of the excessive details. Some I have to skip over because they go on way too long for me. Otherwise, I love the series and have enjoyed being a part of Charlie's journey of self discovery.
I really enjoyed this book. My one criticism would be that I wish the author would put less focus on food. It is prominently featured in all of her books and I personally find it a little too much. I enjoy the mystery and paranormal and am not interested in pies, cakes, etc. I understand how that impacts Jen, in the story, but I think there could be less emphasis on it. It detracts from the story and makes it drag a little. This is the main reason I only rated it four stars.
I think this book may be my favorite in the series, so far! I loved how everybody joined forces to save Charlie! I loved how the characters Tomeka & Darius came back for this story, and helped finding Charlie with their special gifts! I also loved how Tom revealed that he bonded himself to Charlie after their initial "first time" together! And who can't enjoy the cuteness of Poe??!!! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!!
The search for Keeley is getting intense, she feels helpless, frightened and alone. There is something blocking Charlie from connecting with Keeley again Charlie, her family, Tom, Ben, Cameron welcome 2 witches into their fold, with their help and the help of the DOL, will they be to save her? Will they be to late? Charlie is determined and focused, but her focus makes her blind to things transpiring around her. Enjoy your reading! Blessings l
What can I say that I haven't already said in my other reviews about this series!!. I can't express in words how much I loved this book. It was exciting from the start. And there was a lot of mixed emotions all the way through to the end. I didn't want the book to end! I absolutely love there's books. I love reading about Charlie and her family. If I could give this book a more then a five start I would! Can wait to read book 8!!
This is by far the best of the series thus far. Wendy Wang returned to the magic that initially captured my attention in the beginning of the series. Now she needs to find a really good copy and content editor and clean up the repeated dialog and misused and misspelled words. There were a couple of sections where it felt like writing to get a word count. Book 8 here I come!
I preferred the relationship based story lines of the first books to the adventure style seen since Ben and the OK turned up. We don't need magical cowboys, people who can make someone look better, feel better or find things (or be a medium) is fine with out opening locks or throwing fireballs. Something was Harry potter and more normal would be more to my taste.
Fantastic action-packed installment! I love how Carlie is starting to integrate her sone into her adventures, and to encourage him to learn about his talents. A potential soon-to-be stepmother's motives get revealed which has certain members of the ex-inlaw family eating their words, so satisfying. Wonder if that particular relationship will get fostered even more in future stores. The introduction of a few new witches brings some potential fun to the mix as well!
I enjoyed everything in this story except the ending. Ms. Wang's dénouement is abrupt and does not satisfactorily conclude the plot line. Her skimpy ending does not match the rest of the novel. I want to know if Keely is okay and learn about her reunion with family. Did Charlie just walk away from Keely and the other children? Wang, you're not done until you clean up the plot.
Charlie's powers are improving and more are being shown as she becomes more comfortable of being a witch and she's got a familiar finally!! I like the addition of two new witches that are in town and seeing them play such a big role in solving this case. I hope we get to see more of them through the rest of the series since it seems as if they're going to be in the lives of the coven pretty frequently based on the events of this book.
Wendy Wang provides another fantastic book in The Witches of Palmetto series!! We follow Charlie through an investigation to find the missing children.... lots of action in this book.... big changes are coming for Charlie, and I sense a bit of foreshadowing with the taro cards.... will this new position be good for her?
Wendy Wang's Witches of Palmetto Point series just keeps getting better and better. The story of Keeley is loosely attached to book 6 although Book 7 stands alone too. As always, Charlie Payne's story continues with some really interesting twists and turns. Can't wait for book 8!
