It’s really great to be back in this world, and I loved reconnecting with Annia. I really liked her in Sunaya’s books, the Baine Chronicles, and I love her even more now after reading this one. As a talented author, this book felt full of plot and characters even if it isn’t very long. I got to know this new world of Annia’s very well, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her and Garalina. Looking forward to more! I recommend this one!

Hired as a safeguard for two mage children, Annia goes for a trip that is considered a death sentence among her mercenary peers. Successfully crossing the mountains, though, the real job only waits for her - no less dangerous, and much more complex than she ever thought. Ancient entities with powerful magic surface and make a deal - and Annia has now a tough task in front of her. Solving a little mystery on the way was just a cherry on top.
This lady has my respect, admiration, and full attention. I devoured the story in one go, enjoying the easygoing, smooth development at increasing pace, and ending in a situation that gets the reader hooked up. It could be read as a standalone, though the reader can certainly not understand all the references and world setup without reading the Baine chronicles first. Annia is a heroine that attracts the attention and wins the reader within a few pages, and I would love to see her journey continue.

This book is a great prelude to the new series in the Baine Chronicles. I look forward to seeing how Annia and Garalina get along in their future adventures.

Called by Magic: A Mischief and Magic Prequel by Jasmine Walt is a Baine Chronicles World Novella and an exciting new story to dive into. This book brings you back to characters you are familiar with but introduces you to new ones as well. In this book the reader journeys along with Annia as she takes on a task of escorting two young mage children back to their grandfather. Their father has gone missing and their grandfather wants them home as swiftly as possible. They will be entering dangerous territory, and there will be threats along the way, but it is the second task that Annia will be taking on that will change her life.
Called by Magic is an engaging story from start to finish. I will admit that in the beginning, my interest ebbed in and out, but the deeper the story got the more I became pulled in. I have to say that I truly like Annia. She knows when and where to pick her battles. She’s not a hot-head who pops off and insists on proving herself. I’ll admit that in one scene I was worried that would be her character, but I was pleasantly surprised when she chose to walk away. The author sprinkles in familiar names and situations throughout the book, but the story stays focused on Annia.
I appreciate how well written this story is. I have to admit that I am a touch disappointed that justice won’t be dealt with someone who truly deserves it, but that’s only because I’m left curious as to the extent of what really happened with Sorbano. I am pleased to say that I noticed zero editorial issues to distract the reader, so this will be a truly enjoyable story for those who choose to read it.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is an engaging fantasy novel, and I love the amount of mystery that the author weaves into it. I have to say that I am eager for more Annia and her new “friend” Garalina. For those who have read Jasmine Walt’s books, I highly encourage that you pick this book up. It’s one you’re sure to enjoy and don’t want to miss!

Going to be a fantastic series!
Seriously, can’t wait for this Mischief and Magic series to continue. There is something special and fun about this one. If you like magic, ghosts and action, give this novella a try. Even if you haven’t read The Baine Chronicles, you will have no problem following this.

Things to expect: bandits, mages, a ghost named Garalina who becomes something special to Annia (not giving this spoiler away, sorry), magic, hedge witch, cave exploration for magical fungus, revenge for a lover killed, and characters that help move the story along and keep it interesting. This has a little darker story line compared to The Baine Chronicles.
Overall, I highly recommend. I will certainly be checking out the next book.

This is Annia Melcott’s prequel story. She’s one of the secondary characters, and a close friend of Sunaya’s from the Baine Chronicles series. It’s wonderful to revisit this exciting world of mages, shifters, and humans. Ms. Walt’s writing pulls the reader in from the first pages and doesn’t let go until even after the end. If you like action, fantasy, and a magical ghost giving the heroine supernatural powers, this spin-off series has it all. I can’t wait for more.
Please note: You’ll enjoy this book more if you’ve read the Baine Chronicles series first, but the author does a good job giving enough brief background information to make this enough of a stand-alone novella.

I loved the world of Sunaya Baine and the characters, and I can honestly say I was ecstatic when I heard that Walt was going to do a spin-off of the world, via Sunaya's best friend, Annia!
It was a fast-paced and entertaining read that got straight to the point, but had a great flow. I loved the tone; I'm already emotionally invested in this world, so seeing different 'countries' through Annia's eyes was cool. I totally forgot this was a novella, so when it ended, I couldn't believe how short it was, but now that I've finished, I am beyond excited and thrilled for this series. I love the setup, I love Annia's tone, and it's a definite recommend.

She takes on a mission to escort two mage children and their guardian back to their ancestral home avoiding bandits. Can Annia avoid shamans, goddesses and vengeful ghosts and complete her mission.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a great mix of magic and mysticism as well as it was a treat to read another book in the Baine Chronicles World. It started well so I cannot wait to read how this new series develops and where it is gong to go. Well written and very enjoyable.

I was so excited to get to revisit this world. This is my all time favorite book world. Annia is a such a kick butt former Enforcer now mercenary who has to take a break from her life back in Solantha after her sister Noria was sent to the mines. I love how this book integrates so well into the Baine Chronicles time line. Readers finally got answers about where Annia got her necklace and her ability to use magic that we saw in the Baine Chronicles. I can’t wait to see even more books in this world.

The short novella is the entry into a new line of stories about the magical world of the Baine Chronicles. This time it is about Annia, who the readers of the Chronicles new as a close friend of the heroine. The prequel, hence #0 in the series, explains her whereabouts, mote details of her life and how she comes into her -spoilers- ... it is a fast paced story, and makes us curious what happens next.

This is a novella length prequel to a full length series coming soon. This was a super fun read and I am so glad to be reading more of Baine Chronicles world. I am loving getting to know Annia better and cannot wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out! This is a must read for fans of the Baine Chronicles world and if you haven't read the Baine Chronicles yet you can still read this stand alone but you may have more enjoyment from it if you read the Baine Chronicles first.

What a great introduction to Annia and her adventures! Fascinating! I have truly missed this world of mages and shifters. Humans to of course! Annia finds herself the protection of two mage children travelling back home at their grandfathers behest. Though we all know it will never be as straight forward as that! I cannot wait to see what she gets up to next, where her path will take her and if we get to see some familiar faces along the way. Exciting and easy to read.

I downloaded Called by Magic as a free novella from Amazon. I was eager to read this prequel book, a spin-off of the Baine Chronicles, which tells Annia's story. While an interesting character, I prefer Sunaya's storyline; but Walt is a great, interesting storyteller, so I may give this offshoot series a try when book one comes out. As always, the writing is good, but I have a preference for full-length novels where I can dig into the back stories and plots.

This was more of a 3.5 than a true 3, but I had to round down because this book feels like you're supposed to have read other stuff prior to it even though it says it is book 0.5 in this series. It didn't feel like it was sharing a 'new' world so much as working on an established one. That being said, there were some interesting characters and plot points that make me possibly interested in reading more.

This fast paced story had me turning pages to find out what happens next. I love Annia. She's a mercenary who's smart, crafty, protective, adventurous and has some great skills. This prequel novella has left me wanting more.........can't wait for the next book to come out! This story has action, magic, adventure, mages, danger and more.

I absolutely loved the Baine Chronicles series, so did the Happy Dance when I learned there was a spin-off series! This first novella featuring the adventures of Annia, Sunaya’s best friend and a skilled Enforcer, was a fast-paced thriller that solves one mystery and gives a taste of what intrigues will be coming ahead. Can’t wait for the next installment!

Non-stop action is the name of this story. The characters are compelling and the storytelling is outstanding. You are immediately drawn into this world with Annia and care about what is happening. A very good introduction to Jasmine’s new series.

Interesting short story!
It was a good read. Characters interesting. The plot or storyline could be summed up in one line so it was more like just words on a page. I do see it as being developed in to something more substantial.

This is a great story you learn how Annia gets her powers and some of what she can do. This was a page Turner I read it in one sitting it was a lot of fun.
