My proposed title for the author: A Manual for Manipulating Readers to Buy a Book about Manipulating!
This book is a disappointment that fails to provide any real insights into the complex subject of manipulation. The writing is superficial, simply rehashing basic ideas without nuance.
Despite misleading promotional claims, the book contains no original ideas or useful techniques. The amateurish level of psychological understanding demonstrated makes the author unqualified to write on such a topic.
There is a lack of ethical considerations that leaves the book reading like an amoral manual rather than thoughtful examination.
The psychology and method for manipulating, influencing, and controlling the people around you. This book will not only let you know how to control other people, but it will also teach you how to save yourself from other people. The book actually plays the role of a dual-edge sword. You will certainly enjoy it.
I wouldn’t exactly call this dark psychology on manipulation but just an overview of manipulation both positive and negative except leaning abit more on the negative side as you can see from the examples given. This is natural, given that manipulation inherently exudes negative vibes.
“The key to manipulation is using the goals of others to further your own”- possibly what most people know sub consciously but putting it to words helps to realize it.
Being a thin book, expect touch and goes on several topics and places where more examples could have been given and more descriptively.
I felt like a suitable title for this would be: “a brief outline of manipulation”
2nd book I have read on dark psychology. Reading books like this is like eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Think about that before you pick one of these up.
This book actually helps break down manipulation into a readable, objective format - rather than in a purely negative light. Yes, manipulation gets a bad rep because it's typically layered with deception and abuse. It's possible to manipulate people to good ends, too - the difference being they are not necessarily in control of the situation (you are, or so you think).
“Recognizing manipulative behaviours in other people will not only protect you against their influence, but you’ll learn more about their goals, feeding your mind with information that you can use to manipulate them.”
Never seen such an easy-explained and compelling as this. First few chapters is focused on how the term "manipulation" will be defined. We 'll be taught about deception, persuasion, and influence in order to avoid being misled. It's so interesting that manipulation will be free from any ethic values here. It's because (like i did) almost many of us have negative conotation about the word "manipulation".
Further, manipulation is discussed in terms of it's relation to advertising ( even the most inocuous advert is manipulation), military ( love example of The Battle of Hasting), professional world ( i really love i know now why working together with personal friend can create conflicts, because we can't be competitive and supportive at the same time to same person), and personal relationship ( the most controversial arena for manipulation, yet ironically the most natural).
So why we manipulate? The chapter " the advantages of manipulation " answer this in a short, brief, and clear way. Plainly obvious. First of all, of course to achieve goals. Manipulating means altering everything around you to our own interest. Even you can help others by doing all steps of manipulating but changing the direction into other person you want to help. And the most important is, you can guard yourself for being manipulated, because you know the rule.
Emotional manipulation as one of term of manipulation ( there are so many of them , but this book chooses the most often happened) explain about intimidation, seduction, minimization, and blaming. The most interesting is: we all do manipulate others, with or without intention. Manipulation is our gift.
What the boundary of all manipulation when ethic is left behind? The law, is explained in one chapter. What has this book taught me that i didn't know before? Cold reading. The Barnum effect is something i already know about, but cold reading is really new to me. Further reading about it is really on my top of to do list.
Manipulation as per definition is a practice of influencing others to achieve your own goals. This book will help you to get you started with the concept. The basic ideas with examples, advantages and tools are briefly discussed. Methodology of manipulation and how to approach someone whom you are going to influence can be found in this book. The steps include defining your goals, mapping your path, gathering information , identifying opportunities and threat, taking actions and finally learning and improving.
This book is a thin read with simple language and quick discussion on the concept. The fundamentals and basic foundation of this book will help you to move forward with some heavy read later on.
Honestly, there’s nothing dark about it. It’s just a basic book on influencing others, and all of the different ways to do it. It doesn’t go at all into any sort of real depth with it and is only really a basic outline of it all. Overall, great book for those going into things such as public speaking or speech and debate, but if you’re looking for something closer to actual manipulation, this book isn’t it.
The book is good , it's about the big picture of how manipulating people . And i think most people rated low because the book didn't gave a practical step or tactical way to do specific manipulation in certain situations. because the book is originally for the big ideas of how manipulating , not how to manipulating 101 .
Well let me put it like that, it was actually kind if interesting to read about stuff like that, but it didn’t really catch me, I just thought it was somehow annoying that it was talking about “in this chapter” “in this book” “next chapter” most of time, like when I’m reading a book I don’t want to read about the book talking about itself
the worst self-help, if I should even call it that, book I've picked up. It was filled with textbook definitions of manipulation, and generic advice. Didn't read anything I didn't already know. After reading this book, Andrew Tate seems like a good option to waste time on.
