2 Dejected Stars

Murder, intrigue, and romance should have led to the creation of a wonderful tale, but I found this read to be a massive disappointment. The way in which things were depicted in the first chapter did not draw me in. There were some moments of amusement and interest as Lord Benjamin Westwood and Miss Samantha (Sam) Hasting clashed and sparred and I did like the flashbacks to Sam and Edward’s youthful exploits/interactions, but the ending destroyed things. Sam’s character was spunky, charming, and independent, I really enjoyed her, I just wanted her to be transported into a different book.

The key point that has led to 2 stars was the annoying cliff-hanger at the end, after trudging through this book to see how the villain would be revealed to the main characters and how the villain would be dealt with the author left me hanging – and my first feeling was annoyance and a slight curse as I decided nope I don’t need to know what happens next.

This was a good, enjoyable read! Though this book is about a mystery, the author focused more on the couple. So the romance first than the mystery. Both were done well.

So if want a good book and don't mind waiting for the next book in the series then I highly recommend this entertaining ride!

When I was offered to review this book, I was a bit wary. My only attempt at historical romance had been "Outlander" and, for how amazingly written, it had been too distant from me to keep my interest. So I started this book with pretty low expectations, purely because of my own usual preferences, and instead ended up really liking it!

I instantly fell for Benjamin, the hero. He's a "rake" and believe me when I say his seducing game is strong, but he's also a gentleman. I especially liked how protective he was of Sam, and how jealous also he could be. Oh, and did I mention he's like, the most eligible bachelor? Anyway, I had expected stuffy characters (because that was my idea of historical romances' characters!) but Sam and Benjamin were relatable and fun together. Their banter and innuendos aren't as in-your-face and blatant as the ones in contemporary romance, but I found the change refreshing. The subtler jabs and slighter teasing was definitely entertaining. Also, I'm a sucker for childhood friends and, even though Benjamin is older than Sam and he was rather her brother's best friend, it transpires that they too had bonded a bit as kids. It warmed my heart.

Sam's character was very well-shaped. She's an independent woman who, after her brother's death, has to be convinced to take a husband. Having grown up in the country, she's not used to societal rules and etiquette. She's down to earth and has a sharp tongue. I loved how Benjamin appreciated all these characteristics of hers, never trying to suppress her true personality.

The first part of the book focuses on the romance, while the mysterious part only picks up in the last section. It worked for me because it supplied me with enough Benjamin to be a happy reader. However, the identity of the murderer wasn't a shocker. My money had been on that character since the very beginning.

The side characters were also highly enjoyable, from out-spoken, too-old-for-hypocrisy Aunt Abigail, to Queen Bee Alice Shirely and her poor ankle (*evil snicker*), to the three adorable nephews. It depicted an image of a past society that was way more characterized and "human" than what I would have expected, adding to my enjoyment.

All in all, it was a very pleasant surprise for me. It was lighthearted, fun, but also mysterious at times. Sam's character was relatable and Benjamin was the perfect mix between a gentleman and a rake, impulse and control. The heat level wasn't particularly high (the scenes are not very graphic), but it worked with the rest of the narration, so that I didn't feel like I needed more steam.

What's left to say? I'm looking forward to see how the story ends because we're left on a damn cliffy!!!!

It's been a while since I've read a historical romance, but this new-to-me author made me remember the charm of it. Starting with a deadly opening scene, this story branched out into a sweet romance with bits of mystery. I loved how the author broached the relationship developing between Sam and Ben. Every time Sam gave Benjamin a hard time, with all the emphasis on 'Lord' and so forth, I couldn't help but chuckle. Samantha was headstrong and stubborn and reckless and naive, but she was more than a match for Lord Westwood.

Samantha was a brat and made it very hard to continue reading this story. I swear, if it wasn't for Benjamin, and even his twin brother, Thomas, I would have quit. Benjamin was a rake. He knew he had a reputation, but he really didn't care. Well, not until it stood in the way of what he wanted. Being charged with the responsibility of looking out for Samantha, he was supposed to find her a suitable husband. Not lust after her and want her for himself. He needed to settle down with someone appropriate and genteel - Sam was the furthest thing. But the inexplicable connection these two shared didn't give a wit for propriety. Their relationship should never have existed, but it was exactly what they both needed. I loved how they started out with the enemies-to-lovers banter and tension. It made for an entertaining read. Throw in the whole 'relationship of convenience' thing, and this is shaping up to be quite enjoyable.

With one heck of a cliffhanger, I need to know what happens next. It seems Sam can't help but put herself in dangerous situations.

It was a long time I didn't pick an historical romance and A Perfect Plan was great to break the ice and reminding me why I used to love this genre so much.

I instantly liked the characters, even the supporting ones are necessary to the development of the story.
You cannot not to love Samantha, she is not a common heiress, she is witty, smart and a little wild. She will cause some funny troubles for her charming guardian.

This was a good debut novel, the writing is really good and the plot is engaging.

I plan to continue to read this series to discover the truth and solve the puzzle.
I hope Alyssa Drake will release the next book soon.

ARC provided by the Author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the debut book for author Alyssa Drake and it is really, really good. We have a classic Historical Romance, but with humor and a mystery to solve. High marks for combining these genre and making it work so well. It reads like a vintage Julie Garwood.

We open with the murder of Lord Matthew Hastings. The murderer made a whopper of a mistake in that Matthew died before the murderer found what he was looking for. Fast forward 11 years and Matthew's son Edward has been missing, presumed dead in a shipwreck, for 2 years and his widow, Wilhelmina, and sister, Samantha, are ready to reenter Society. Wilhelmina is determined that it is time for Sam to find a husband. Sam... she just wants to stay in the country and manage the families holdings. She has no interest in a husband.

Lord Benjamin Westwood promised his best friend, Edward that he would act as Sam's guardian and he intends to dispatch this obligation as soon as possible so he can get on with his own task of finding a wife. His memories of Sam as a tomboy hoyden make it a very rude awakening when he meets to now all grown up Samantha Hastings. To say he is surprised and more than a little attracted is an understatement.

Benjamin and Sam have an instant attraction and both are fighting it. Benjamin, because he does take his promise to Edward seriously. Sam because Benjamin has a well deserved reputation as a rake and a cad and she just doesn't want a husband at all. But neither can deny the electric force of the passion they feel for each other. Into the middle of this sexual stew comes a murderer who is still looking for something that has eluded him for over a decade and he is not going to stop until he is successful.

Oh wow, this was such a great book to read! I didn't realize it ended in a cliffhanger, though, so now I'm looking forward to the next book coming out.

Miss Samantha Hastings is quite the character and I just loved her!! She refuses to conform to society's strict rules and loves nothing better than to walk around barefoot, swear to her heart's content and live in the country where there are no ball or parties to attend. She ends up going to stay with her sister in law after her brother's death and is told she needs to have her first season and attend all these balls and parties that she so detests.

Lord Benjamin Westwood finds himself Samantha's guardian after promising her brother that he would make sure she married well. He figures it will be a quick job but once he sets eyes on her, he wants her all to himself! He's an experienced rake and she's an innocent but sparks fly when they are together and I just loved their interactions with each other, some humorous, others steamy as heck!!!

When Samantha's brother suddenly reappears, not dead after all, it's discovered that there's a murderer out to get him and his family! This author weaves her story quite well and I had a hard time putting the book down.

A Perfect Plan-5 amazing stars!!

Alyssa Drake, you have kept my interest peaked and I cannot wait for the Wiltshire Chronicles #2. I NEED to know what happens next. Talk about a cliffhanger!!!

Initially, I wasn't happy with the third person perspective. I am usually not a fan, but Drake has done a wonderful job capturing each character in detail-a task not done easily. I absolutely loved the third person telling of this story and I don't think it would have worked as well had it been told from Samantha's point of view.

I will admit, I didn't know this wasn't going to be a standalone, but it didn't make a difference in the end. I loved the WHOLE book. Samantha's character was wonderful. Rich, strong, witty, and had a tongue on her not wholly appreciated for the time. Benjamin, dear LORD, I loved him. Sly, and rough around the edges, but still sweet and loving. The secondary characters were as rich as the both Lord Westwood and Miss Hastings. I honestly pictured Damelza and Ross Poldark while reading this, and they just fit so wonderfully together. Add in the extra tension of murder, and betrayal, I was thoroughly entranced the entire book.

The entire time I pictured a game of CLUE-this person did it, in the Library, with the Candle Stick! I loved the mystery (something I don't often read, but will now start to enjoy a wee bit more), it had me seized with emotion and questions the entire read.

I cannot wait for next installment of this series, I wish I had it in my hands RIGHT now. This is my first Drake, but I can guarantee you it wont be my last. I adore a good historical romance, and when you throw in a enigmatic mystery, I cannot deny myself.

Alyssa Drake is a new author for me. My regular authors new releases have been far and few between the last 3 or so weeks so I've been researching new authors to read in-between. Some have been good, some not. Alyssa fits all my requirements in a new author so let's hope she doesn't disappoint. She only has seven books in my genre so thought I'd check her out. Her stories take place around 1840's and I prefer early 1800's but those aren't usually to far off of the era I like. Since I don't read book descriptions anymore I just glanced at them because of some of the reviews I saw made me curious. So I looks like this book and the next book, the main FC and MC are the same which probably means a cliffhanger. Not a fan but we'll see how that works out. But I did see the last 2 books are different characters. Not sure how they are all intertwined but we'll see. Also seems to be pretty intense storylines. Looking forward to reading this book.

I had no idea what to expect from this author as I don’t know anything about her. I really enjoyed this story. It caught my attention from the beginning. There is a scene in a flashback with her brother when she is about 10 that was so damn cute and so heartwarming and so well written it gave me all the “feels”. I really liked Samantha and Benjamin. I loved their interactions and personalities. They also had great chemistry. I loved the suspense and danger in this book. Something I noticed, at the time I watched Anthony in Season 2 of Bridgerton, I always thought it was irritating when he would tell Kate all the time, “I am a gentleman”. Benjamin says it a lot and I guess I never realized how many books I read that the MC says that same thing when put into certain situations. Overall a really good read and I really liked it a lot. Can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series. So as I suspected this ended in a cliffhanger so good thing I'm ready to pick up book 2. If this would have been a new release for me and had to wait, I would not have been happy.

So here's the deal: I love me some Austen-esque, period drama. Toss me a book with a moody British guy, a mouthy heroine, and the intensity that ensues between them as they bicker and try to mark their independence, and I am one happy reader. Since this book falls under the Romance category and wasn't written in the 18th or 19th century, the details are much juicier and avoid the subtleties of those times, which admittedly is a bonus for me. Add to that a suspenseful plot of murder and intrigue, and you've officially got me hooked and binge-reading late into the night.

My only disappointment - which the author will not find disappointing at all - was the cliffhanger at the end. I found myself clawing for more pages to know what happens next, or more specifically in my case since it was on an eReader, I was frantically assaulting the button to go to the next page to no avail. I guess I might just have to get book two of the Wiltshire Chronicles!

Great characters, exciting storyline, totally hooked.

Blown away! Those two words perfectly sum up how I feel about this story. I freely admit that I’m a bit picky when it comes to reading historical romance novels, but this is by no means a run of the mill story.

No, this is a historical romance/suspense/whodunit which has your brain cells firing on all cylinders. In various directions – coughs – for more than one reason *winks* As the story progresses and secrets are unveiled, I thought I had it all worked, only to be dumbfounded along with the characters. I had my own arguments with them as well, but would they listen? In a word, no – smh.

This is a time when women were to know their place and not seek anything beyond their station. Where their greatest achievement in life was to secure a good match. For spirited Samantha (Sam), this is not the easiest of tasks. With an unconventional upbringing, she struggles to conform to society norms and marriage is the last thing she wants.

As the danger mounts, a plan is hatched, mutually beneficial to both parties; a marriage of convenience to her brother’s best friend. However, Lord Benjamin Westwood unleashes a passion in her that cannot be denied.

Dashing Benjamin has a bit of a reputation as a rake. He has a knack for making the ladies go all aflutter, lol. Trust me, I don’t think I’d be immune either *snorts*

“You are what I want and when I finally get you alone, I will show you how much.”

Their relationship may have started as one of convenience but Benjamin’s own flames of passion have been ignited and he will protect Sam at any cost.

I felt as if I was transported back in time with this story and thoroughly enjoyed the witty repartee between Benjamin and Sam as the sparks fly. Plus, the suspense had me on the edge of my seat right to the end, and yup, you’ve guessed it – a cliffhanger!

So, I do have one teeny tiny confession to make; I’m not a big fan of the cover *gasp* But, pay no heed to this as treasure awaits within these pages.

Le sigh – how long till Book 2 comes out? Somebody, anybody….

Miss Samantha Hastings has grown up in the country; far from the ton and high society. But when her brother Edward was lost at sea, Samantha quickly joined her widowed sister-in-law to help raise her three young nieces, and to give Wilhelmina much needed moral and emotional support. Years have passed, and Wilhelmina has decided it’s beyond time for Samantha to be introduced to the ton and high society, and to attempt to find a 2nd husband to assist her (Wilhelmina) with her daughters. Samantha is outraged, but knows Wilhelmina is right; they both need to move on after Edward’s death.
Benjamin, Lord of Westwood, is in a bind; he must marry and produce an heir by his 30th birthday, or he loses his title, lands and home. Determined to NOT let that happen, he decided to attend a ball and pick out the future Lady Westwood. He has his mind made up; the future Lady Westwood should be demure, attractive, and quiet…. That is, until he meets Samantha, a fiery, outspoken beauty who is still an innocent… However, Benjamin fights the attraction, as he is also Samantha’s guardian, due to a promise extracted by Samantha’s brother Edward before he left on his ill-fated voyage… Samantha is besieged with suitors, but Lord Westwood is determined that he will win her heart and hand!
Fate intervenes in a most unexpected way, and Lord Westwood and Samantha find themselves in a most peculiar fix…
Intriguing story, that captured my attention immediately! The twists, the turns, the situations! I can hardly wait to see what happens next!

I was asked by the author for an honest review.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a historical romance, but A Perfect Plan exceeded my expectations. Beware - this is not a standalone novel (unless you want to imagine your own end to the story).

I liked the characters and the writing. I got the impression that other characters would be getting their own books (as in: there was potential for a story) even before I got nearly to the end of the book and realized that there would be a cliffhanger.

At times I had to reread sentences because they contained a lot more words than I'd use in 2017. It made the dialogue seem more true to the period (disclaimer - I have no idea how people actually talked in the late 1800s, but based on a few movies I've seen, using a lot of big words was believable).

Samantha Hastings isn’t the usual debutante, she is sharp tongued and has a passion for fencing. After her brother’s death, Benjamin, Lord Westward becomes her guardian. They are attracted to each other and Benjamin does need to marry and provide an heir. There is a mystery surrounding her father’s death and some missing jewellery. There are some passionate moments between Samantha and Benjamin and although the reader is made aware of the identity of the murderer, all has not been resolved. I have preordered the next book!

Great read. Samantha is a woman who wasn't raised in the society which she is suddenly thrown into. Benjamin feels an immediate attraction to Samantha, even before he realized who she is.

First let me start by saying that I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. I've watched tons of period movies, and I love them. I have never read the books though. The author did a great job creating scenes that were mentally visible and believable. This is a romance novel, as well as a mystery. With each new scene, I fell deeper into each character; and by the end, I wanted to know more. I can't wait to read the next book. The suspense...

This book is Pride & Prejudice with Sizzle and Shock!

First of all I am a major history nut and I too write historical romance so I tend to be skeptical of facts and mood but Alyssa Drake mastered the era with so much grace! The way she incorporated the period into the plot was fantastic!

This was up there with Jane Austin in that classic sense but with Snap and Saucy spice! So well written I don't know where to start!

10 points for the elegant flow of tongue in this book! The dialogue of the characters fits the time and carried the musical tone that is both proper and artistic!

20 points for writing relatable yet whimsical characters! Every one of the people in this book have soul placed perfectly in their roles. The women are women and the men are men. They are traditional but authentic so the settings are always vibrant with their antics!

Thirty points for the lay of the land! England and the society hub bub was VERY WELL PORTRAYED! I absolutely adore the ton and their titles, ranks, etiquette, scandal, gossip and secrets! Some people can't keep up with the word play and the undertone in which people spoke but it was the culture and this story takes you right there! In the middle of a 19th century season! Even the country side was vibrantly painted! I could feel the comfort of Sam's summer home!

20 more points for the romance!!!! Benjamin and Samantha have a steamy attraction that's under the perfect amount of obstacles.
Society
Peer pressure
Moral conflict
And personal defiance

The chemistry is at a simmer for so long and then blooms into something flirty, flaming hot and endearing!

10 points for the perfectly designed subplot!!!! The thriller. The laced suspense! Wow! You're thrust into the fray of the murder mystery from page one which engages you instantly and keeps the hook buried deep in your reader's eye until you get answers. It was a mind blowing "who done it" chase that climaxes the story and sets us up for the next book! Erie and twisted enough that you feel red flags that are misleading or agonizing because you just have to know!

I stayed up because bed time wasn't an option until I read the end and got my mystery solved.

So over all this book is a 100 points winner! Five Stars for romance, historical flare, suspense, mystery and sensual play!

I can't wait for Alyssa's next book, it's going directly to my kindle the moment it's released and I can safely deem her a no doubt and no hesitation favorite.

Side note that to fellow historians do NOT judge a book by its cover. I noticed at first that the couple on the front was dressed in modern wear and the male lead had a modern hair cut. I did wonder if that meant the plot would be a mix of contemporary and historical like a fantasy but it's not!

This author did a fine job with research, and transports you to the times of balls, dowries, gloves and brandy with flawlessness!

Worth every shilling... Wink wink.

For a debut novel, A Perfect Plan is not a bad read. It has likable and fairly well-developed characters who are fun to read about. The storyline is a combination of mystery and romance.

I found myself liking most of the characters in this book with the exception of a couple and perhaps those for good reason. I thought the characters were complex and dimensional and written to make the reader feel a familiarity with them from the beginning. Samantha was a fun character because though she was the sister of a Lord she wasn't exactly the most ladylike at times and was a bit of a handful for those watching out for her. Benjamin, while being a Lord, didn't really take himself too seriously and didn't come across as uppity or stuffy. He was enjoyable from the moment he was introduced. Honestly, though, at times I was a bit perplexed at the chemistry between Samantha and Benjamin. Something just seemed off between the two and their relationship seemed a bit awkward from time to time.

While the story starts off as a mystery it soon turns to the budding romance between Samantha and Benjamin and the mystery doesn't really pick back up until the story is well into its telling. I found this to be different and had almost forgotten about the mystery laid out in the prologue of the story. There were times I didn't care for the changing POV storytelling as I thought it slowed down the pace of the story. Thankfully though the changing POV didn't make the storytelling repetitive as can sometimes be the case.

Reading this on my Kindle I was able to tell when I was approaching the end of the story but it didn't seem as if the story was coming to a close. I was afraid of a cliffhanger and was not really too surprised that the story ends with a major cliffhanger. I was disappointed in this as I do like closure to a story. If not for the cliffhanger I would have given the story a higher rating.

Time will tell if I read the next story in the series. I liked the characters well enough to wonder what happens next and the story was interesting enough to have me wondering if I know who the murderer is. All in all the book was a pretty decent read.

A Perfect Plan is a historical romance – suspense, which b begins in a gruesome way in the year 1842. The prologue boasts of one murder, a writing desk and bribery.
Chapter One picks up the story in the year 1853, as I hoped this would not become too confusing to follow but thankfully the story continued in 1853.
The language of A Perfect Plan is in keeping with its era and the first chapter had a lighter tone, with a scene of three siblings getting one another into trouble.
I like the character Sam (Samantha), her story, background and connection with various other characters. This was the century of ballroom courtship and there are many characters dancing on the floor.
Until we were introduced to them all I read A Perfect Plan tentatively, hoping they would not be featured heavily in forthcoming chapters.
I like the setting of the book and its look into society in that time period, with widowers, young men, ghosts and mothers playing matchmaker at every opportunity. There are characters with personalities that you can recognize in people today and learn that times then and now are not much different.
While the romance was limp, I did like the mystery of what happened to Rebecca and Matthew, the parents of Sam and Edward.
A good read.

The author has created a charming heroine, Samantha Hastings. She is as sympathetic for her quirky personality and social ineptitude as she is for the air of darkness that hangs over her family. The hero is a bit more one-dimensional, but attractive for his sympathy with Sam, loyalty to her brother, and relationship with his own family.

The Prologue is excellent and sets the tone for the book. She lays the villain's evil nature out clearly and signals ongoing peril. The suspense plot weaves in and out, sometimes abruptly, but it is the interesting part of the book and generally easy to follow.

The romance plot proceeds predictably and is a bit rushed, weakening the classic romance trope of the reformed rake. I had a hard time buying the instant tumble into raging passion.

Sticklers may find anachronisms and quibble period detail, but on the whole the twin stories work, and it provided a pleasant evening's read.
I received a gift copy of this book.

A Perfect Plan by Alyssa Drake.
4.5 Stars. Prepare for an adventurous mystery! I LOVED this book! The complex plot starts to unwind on the first page with a disturbing and cold calculating character in the act of torturing a man to death with a violent poison! The creatively written storyline commands your attention to the end. The fabulously strong and stubbornly willed characters armed with their sharp tongues and witty banter brings out laughs while spinning twist and turns to keep you guessing what will happen to who next and by who! I throughly enjoyed this great historical mystery adventure with steamy “rakish” hot romance!
However, I do have one complaint! There was so much building, and building, and buildings, and then all of the sudden, the “who” is revealed! Yay! Then I read, “The End”? What?! Noooo! I thought, no this couldn’t be happening to me! Then I got the next book in the series, and my world is good again! Happy Reading♥️

This is a Historical; why is the male cover model wearing a modern tuxedo and an undercut hairstyle?
Some appalling historical inaccuracies ruined what could have been a good story. Needs a good copy editor and NOT to end on a cliffhanger.

Sam has lived a fairly sheltered life on her family's estate in the country. She has been kept away from the drama and gossip that's part of the society crowd in London. After the death of her brother, Edward, Sam moves in with her sister-in-law, Wilhelmina, and her three daughters. Wilhelmina introduces her into society and is determined to find a suitable husband for Sam. Sam has no intentions of getting married and will do whatever she can to prevent men from officially courting her. That is until she meets Lord Benjamin Westwood, again. They once had an encounter when Sam was still very young. Will Benjamin be the one man who can change her mind about marriage?

Benjamin and Edward, have been best friends for a long time. When Edward asks Benjamin to act as Sam's guardian if something would happen to him of course Benjamin says yes. Benjamin never expected to take over this duty from his friend. After meeting Sam and seeing the beautiful woman she's turned into, Benjamin can't stand the thought of another man touching her. He can't stop thinking about her, even though she drives him mad on several occasions. When Edward turns up on Benjamin's doorstep alive it turns out that Edward has been investigating the death of his father. His father was murdered and now the whole family is in danger. In a desperate attempt to keep her safe Benjamin proposes to Sam himself. How long will it take before Sam finds out how he truly feels about her?

Sam is a feisty young woman. She has a mind of her own and will not let herself be pressured into anything, especially not following the strict rules that society lays upon women. Sam is incredibly smart, she's an educated woman and she has been taking good care of the financial part of their estate. I loved how Edward has taken the time to teach her everything he knows. Sam is trained in a lot of things that aren't considered appropriate for a woman of her standing. Edward and Sam are really close, just as I am with my own brother. This made is easy for me to connect to the story. Sam is hotheaded, but also innocent at the same time. I loved those layers in her character.

Benjamin doesn't have a good reputation when it comes to the ladies. To keep his title he has to marry and conceive an heir before he turns thirty. He has to find a suitable wife soon. Benjamin is a loving son and brother and he's loyal to his friend Edward too. Benjamin takes his duty as a guardian seriously. It shows him what he didn't dare to see so many years ago. Sam is the love of his life and he feels that the moment he sees her again. Benjamin is a strong man, who doesn't appreciate women who would just follow his lead. I was laughing out loud when I was reading about his thoughts of some of the people he meets. Any woman would be lucky to have him as a husband, since she'll be treated with love and respect, which is what I liked the most about his personality.

A Perfect Plan is a great story about how love will find you when you least expect it. The story holds a great mystery as well. This mystery is where the danger that Sam's family is in comes from and I was anxious to find out who the villain behind it would be. I love it when a historical romance story feels genuine. Alyssa Drake almost literally takes you back in time with her vivid descriptions and intriguing characters. Even though she uses the language that is appropriate for the era she writes about, I flew through the pages. A Perfect Plan was my first book by Alyssa Drake, but I can tell you that I'll be reading the next book in this series with no hesitation as soon as I can.
