Shadowspawn slaughtered Jarrett’s family, leaving him and his brother orphans. Determined to have his vengeance, Jarrett and his comrades guard the Black Wall, the only thing standing between Arcanthia and the seemingly endless waves of monsters hell-bent on destruction and death.
Yet, when the shadowspawn launch an all-out assault, Jarrett is thrust into a battle of cataclysmic proportions. When darkness spreads and the death toll mounts, even the Shadowguard’s courage and skill may not stand against their evil.
Will Jarrett survive the onslaught, or will the rising tide of darkness destroy his world?

I found out about this short story during my FB IFA Summer Reading Challenge and downloaded it from the author's site, where it's available for free. Why didn't I know about it sooner!!!?
A short tale of courage in the face of despair! Bloody, gritty, dark and gruesome, it will plunge you into a desperate battle for survival against overwhelming odds!
An awesome intro to the upcoming Battleborn Mage series, Beyond the Shadows dumps the reader straight into the fire! No cuddling, snuggling or smooching! Man up and hold your ground even when all odds are stacked against you!
The world of Arcanthia is besieged by shadowspawn. The seemingly endless waves of monsters are hell-bent on destruction and death, And the only thing standing in their way is The Black Wall. The first and final line of defense of Arcanthia, manned by the elite Shadowguard.
Jarrett, whose family had been slaughtered by shadowspawn, is determined to have vengeance and has dedicated his life to the defense of his realm from these creatures of nightmare. Stolen from the streets, forced into slavery, and trained as gladiators, Jarrett and his brother Kolby are now among the best of the Shadowguard.
The beasts attack night after night but the Shadowguard holds! Yet, when the shadowspawn launch an all-out assault, Jarrett is thrust into a battle of cataclysmic proportions. When darkness spreads and the death toll mounts, even the Shadowguard’s courage and skill may not stand against their evil.
In a vivid style that makes you see the battle unfold in every single detail, Angel Haze will give you arrows flying, beasts howling, blood flowing and entrails flying! Something that looks a little bit like this:
Amid bodies torn apart and nightmarish creatures that seem to revel in the carnage, Jarrett is determined to hold his ground. But the monsters are too many and the Shadowguard may not survive this time.
And the stakes are brought even higher as Jarrett and his comrades realize the Battlemages are also outside, among the hellish beasts! The only ones who could put an end to the creatures' invasion! Will they be able to make it to the Wall alive? And will they be able to get to safety, when the standing orders are to "Not open the gates"?
In the heat of the battle, through grief and despair, Jarrett has to make a choice upon which the very fate of the realms hinges. What that is, you're gonna have to read and find out! :)
For such a short story, Beyond the Shadows manages to deliver excellent action scenes and nicely fleshed out characters in an utterly vivid style and at great pacing.
I highly recommend it to anyone in search for a short gritty and bloody read and am looking forward to the upcoming Battleborn Mage series.

That was a great way to spend lunch. Because you know, overwhelming onslaughts of shadowspawn monsters attacking and being repelled whilst blood splashes on everything is just what one needs to be reading while eating.....
At any rate, this was a nice snapshot of a bigger story that's now on the map for me.
A really nice short story about Shadowspawn invading The Black Wall (which quite similar to Castle Black) with great numbers. It's basically a gory action-packed battle-scene with well-portrayed dark atmosphere.
The main character is a simple archer, which is nice, I liked the idea of portraying the battle from a simple archer's POV. The writing flows well, the pacing is good, though sometimes felt a bit rushed, but not too rushed, for a short story it's ok though.
Writing a good short story is a hard task, but Angel did well in writing an enjoyable and well-structured short story that has an interesting ending that made me in interested in keeping an eye on her next works and follow her progress as an author.
When Jarrett and friends face off against nightmarish monsters, their lives and the battle mages lives are at stake? Will they survive. Read on and find out for yourself.
This was a great short story from the Battle mages universe. Be sure to check this book out on Amazon.
This is a fascinating, albeit short, introduction to a completely new universe for me. It reminds me in some ways of Peter Brett's demon series, although the twist at the end pulls it in a decidedly different direction and I need to know more. The writing here is superb and manages to draw you in with very few words. There wasn't really enough time to get to know the characters, but the snapshot you get is fascinating and hints at excellent characterisation in the main series. All in all, count me intrigued. It's perhaps more of a taster than a full novella but it hints at good things yet to come.
Short but sweet introduction to the author and the world. Pretty much nonstop tension but it still manages to set the stage by showing the worldbuilding bit by bit. Well worth the read and certainly has me ready for more from this world.
Holy moly, that's was bloody intense, for a short story to grip you like that with it's sheer edge of the seat reading, man those shadowspawn are relentless, they just don't give the shawdow guards a minute of reprieve, in this little tale we follow Jarrett a shadow guard bent on revenge to kill as many shadowspawn as possible, after losing his sister and parents in a previous story to these monsters, he must protect the only family he has left his brother Kolby and stop the beasts from breaching the wall, but even being a top marksman with his bow, how are you supposed even protect yourself against these nightmares when they never let up, when battles mages appear that they thought were dead, they must throw everything they have to get them over the wall to safety, but can they do it and at what cost, that was just awesome, from what I've read from Angel Haze so far has been brilliant, I can't wait to read Angels next in the series Reign Of Shadows, if you haven't read this, I really recommend you do.😁👹☠
The world of Arcanthia is surrounded by a black wall because it is besieged by shadowspawn and this wall is manned by the man of the shadowguard night and day as the monsters are hell bent on destruction and death for all humans behind the wall. Jarrett and his brother are two of these guards, they had lost all their family to the evil of the spawn and Jarrett vowed to get his vengeance but the monsters out of nightmare are never ending and the more they kill the more appear until they face a battle of cataclysmic proportions in which Jarrett loses more than he could have imagined. Phew this is a story to give a reader nightmares, the monsters are creatures from nightmares, horrible and evil to the core and the ending of the book leaves one reeling and dreading that there really is no hope for the poor people inside the wall! A great start to the Battleborn series which I am sure will develop into a great epic saga!
Bugger me that was amazing! Such a short story but packed with so much world, so much history and so much action. The book focuses on one attack from Shadowspawn on a castle designed to fend them off. The non-stop action crams in plenty of character insight, motivations and back stories while being a thrilling (actually exhausting!) battle scene. Well worth a read and I’m now cracking on with the next books in this world.
Grimdark fantasy world in which shadowspawn monsters plague the wall holding them at bay. The author did a great job of making me attached to characters that I only knew for a few pages. The battle scene was epic and violent. The feeling of battle and the descriptions of the panic and difficult choices were expertly done. I can't wait to read more from Angel Haze!
Fast paced short story of a nail-biting battle scene. Left me intrigued to know more of the world and how the evil will be defeated. Ended on a cliffhanger that I also am intrigued to see if we’ll get a further POV from.
Wow just amazing! Action from the start to the end. And the cliffhanger damn it! I was thinking about the end the whole night. Now I want to read more I'm definitely going to read The BattleBorn Series when the series comes out.
Super wee novella which in just a few pages had me rooting for our protagonist. Fabulous fight scenes and a nice snapshot of the Battleborn world of which I now intend to read more about!
Set in a world falling apart, as an invasion of monsters tries to get past the wall built to stop them from reaching the Settled Kingdoms, we find Jarrett and his fellow soldiers desperately trying to stem the tide of what could spell doom for humanity. A veritable horde of monsters has erupted from a portal some miles from the wall, and every effort to find it and destroy it has met with failure. Jarret, an archer in the army, is just one of a mass of troops trying to hold them at bay. for Jarrett, its personal, since some monsters that made it past the wall killed his family, and he and his brother are trying to keep other families from having to deal with that.
The story has excellent actions scenes, with some up close, in the thick of battle actions. It gives us a look at the characters thoughts and motivations, and does a good job fleshing them out in a short time. The setting is well thought out, and you get a good feel for it. The plot takes an excellent twist at the end, and you are left with a real longing to see what happens next, which is always a good sign. I cant wait to see where the author takes this story from here.
This was the first book I’ve read by Angel Haze, but it certainly won’t be the last. She manages to weave a desperate tale set within a battle. The pacing was perfect with just the right amount of backstory to ground the reader in the main character’s point of view.
The only hiccup for me was the last segment, which was told from a different POV (their identity is kept hidden from the reader). I had to reread it to get a sense of what was happening, and I can assume that it’s a bit of strategic foreshadowing that will unfold in another novel.
Angel Haze this is simply fantastic , this story grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go this series is going to be one helluve ride, that cover is awesome , the action is great with plenty of baddies . What this all boils down to is a fantastic book with the anticipation of when is the next book 😀😀😀😀
Short, but intense. A shot of lexical espresso. At first glance I was hit by the tropes--desperate defenders manning a wall against an impending threat-- but Haze quickly made it her own via a plethora of increasingly hideous foes and fast-paced pandemonium. I was put in mind (in a good way) of the game Doom, wherein wave upon wave of ever-deadlier assailants attempt to beset you. To say it's action-packed is an understatement-- breathless, might be a more apt word. The descriptiveness also painted a chaotic scene and well-rendered new creatures. There was little backstory, but enough glimpses to give insight into the main character and world in which the story is set. I would have given this 4.5 stars, mainly because the cliffhanger (enticing and chilling as it was) didn't wrap up the story, making it feel more of a prelude than a stand-alone work. That being said, Goodreads doesn't do half stars, so I'll round it up to a 5 and brace myself for where this goes next!
This is a short, action-packed story about the soldiers at the wall, protecting the realm from the shadowspawn. It features some of the gladiators from Blood of Vengeance who escaped the prince's keep, and to remain free agreed to defend the wall with the skills they'd gained in the arena. Additionally, this short story sets things up for Reign of Shadows, the first novel in the series.
As I've read both of those books, this glimpse at what happens at the wall offers a lovely snap-shot of the situation and some tantalizing hints at what is to come. I'm not sure how it would read for someone who knows nothing about the series. I think I'm too deeply mired in everything I already know and definitely enjoyed this story as an appetizer to keep me going with these characters.
I certainly love the concept and will be exploring the rest of the series when time (and my finances) allows.
A short, sharp introduction to a fantasy world where those known as the Shadowguard stand watch atop the wall which separates the civilised lands from the Shadow Wood. It is a place of unending darkness that spawns monsters, though none have been able to discover how, or why the darkness came to be in the first place. The story is one big battle sequence with a focus on Jarrett, a man of the guard.
Nice world building for such a short piece, and the writing flows well. Some parts could be a little confusing (funnily enough it was what happened before the busy battle scene that seemed to skip over details) and had a habit of repeating descriptions/words, but generally good as your usual fantasy fare goes. 2.5 stars bumped up because it is decent writing, I just personally didn't feel drawn in by the character.
-I received a free copy of this ebook in a giveaway-
Short but very fast pacing and imaginative prequel to a fantasy series, full of vivid images and descriptions from the battlefield. The Shadowguard protecting the human realm behind the wall has to face a dreadful attack from the Shadowspawn, braving the onslaught and putting their lives on the line, while also trying to get the returning battlemages behind the wall to safety. We get introduced to the monsters of this world and some basic info about the world building, but no deeper understanding is enabled - this is just a flavor of what's to come in the main series. Maybe would be better to read after at least book one or shortly before, or there would be many unanswered questions and lots of details missing to get a fuller picture. Nevertheless, well written, and if one does not mind violent scenes depicted to gory details too much, this can be an enjoyable and lightning-fast read.
If you like violent action with little else going on, you'll love this. It's very short (I read it in 20 minutes or so), & she writes action well. There isn't a lot of plot, character development, etc. But the action sure keeps on coming!
The Shadow Spawn are a group of assorted monsters who's only goal is to kill as many of the castle's Shadow Guards as possible. And that's pretty much the story. This standoff has been going on for 6 or 7 years. There is one twist at the very end of the book.
This actually is written ok, if you are someone who likes reading about fighting, killing & action. Not my cup of tea, but it may be yours.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
*I received this as a ARC From Angel Haze in hopes that I would read and review with my honest opinion. These thoughts are of my own accord* All I can think was wow. Right from the start the story began it was deep into an amazing fight. We had a little background information about why the event was happening and what it was preventing but for me it didn’t matter. The depth of the language and story just took me away that I wanted to keep on reading. It was short as I was told before hand it’s a 7k story, now that it is over I want more. I will certainly be keeping and eye on A.H. and her future stories.
*I was given an ARC copy by the author and voluntarily reviewed.
This short story blew me away, and I'm dying to read more by this author. Angel Haze has crafted a world full of terrifying, fascinating creatures, amazing battle scenes, and intriguing characters.
I don't read many short stories so I was initially wary of starting this, but it is very well-paced. Jarrett's interactions with his brother and his fellow guards were a great juxtapositon to the drama of the battle.
Overall, I loved the introduction to this world, and I'll definitely be continuing the series. It has a very Game of Thrones-esque feel, which I really enjoyed!
There is strong story pacing that showcases Author Haze's talents while leaving the reader wanting more of this story set during a desperate battle for survival. Except for his brother, Jarrett has no family left thanks to the enemy known as shadowspawn. In the midst of a battle, as a member of the Shadowguard, he needs to try and help stem the tide of an invasion of shadowspawn monsters and try to stay alive. Battle scenes, backstory, and character development all leave this reader impressed it all made it in to such a brief story and wanting more.
When i heard people read this story on the IFA summer challenge, I wanted to find out how to get it. And that turned out to be super easy! On the authors website and it was even free!
Beyond the Shadows will leave you wanting for more. It is a short story about Jarrett and gives you just the right amount of information to be totaly swept up in the story. It is a dark and gritty story about two brothers against the odds. The term Darkspawn brought me right back to the tunnels of Dragon Age (terrifying beasts!). Angel knows how to push the buttons and leaves you wanting for more after this short intro story!
Beyond the Shadows Angel Haze Book 0.5 of her Battleborn mage series
If you're a pansy like me but want to try a grimdark, you'll survive this one That is, if you can watch orca in LOTR lose their lives in colorful and gushing ways, you can. Most of the deaths are Helms deep ish, and its easier to tolerate creature gore. Sure some humans lose their entrails too. So. Thats a bummer. But it's a war, people!
Somehow I felt adrenaline even in this short story so she did a great job. The writing is clear and engaging and the battle is interesting and the stakes feel high. And the last part was both ew and ooh as I'm very very interested and scared of the turn of events.
I really didn’t get enough of a story to get anything more than the desperate state of the kingdom. It became clear at the end that things would soon become much more dire.
In a frantic night of overwhelming odds, unusual attacks and the recovery of a group of battle mages, we learn of the losses and determination of one of the veteran fighters of a six year war.
In 32 pages, the world building is sufficient. I would like to learn more, so the story has done its job. I learned of Angel Haze’s skill with words. I wouldn’t rate it outstanding, but neither would I discount it; she seems a bit more handy than a lot of her contemporaries.

This story is a fast pace full on action of battle and mystery. It has so much fighting of dark and dangerous creatures. It pulls you in from the beginning with it’s fantastic wording and style. It is just a taste of what is to come later. It leaves you wanting to know so much more. Since it is a short, quick read we don’t learn much about the characters but so far Jarrett seems to be strong and caring. The writing was superb as it gives you descriptions that are vivid. It is most definitely a must read.
This is the first story I've read by the author and wow was it great! Dark, gritty, horror-esque! This story grabs you from the beginning and brings you along a wild ride! Just because this is a short story, don't let it scare you away. By the end though, if you're anything like me, you just might have a spine chilling reaction. I can't wait to read more from the author! I received an ARC for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
