When the cards are stacked against you, the Kings will even the odds.
For Ward “King” Kingston the role of protector, forged by fire and tragedy, is one he takes seriously. When King is asked to safeguard the son of a four-star general and friend, he is pulled back into the world of government black ops on a mission that raises painful memories from his past. The moment King meets Leo, amid the chaos of a lockdown at a secret black site, it’s clear he’s never faced a challenge like this—one that will test his unwavering sense of control.
Leopold de Loughrey is a misunderstood genius whose anxiety and insecurities are sent into overdrive when he is forcefully recruited to work on a top-secret project. Terrified of what his role as "invaluable asset" means, Leo’s stress leads to disappearances, arguments, and blowups that threaten the project and Leo’s future. King’s arrival is a calm in the storm for Leo and his frenetic thoughts.
King and Leo couldn’t be more different, yet as they navigate the dangers of a secret multi-agency operation and face unknown threats, their differences could be what saves them. Neither man believes a happily ever after is in the cards, but their hearts might just prove them wrong… if they can survive a deadly betrayal.

I have read and loved every single book in this series and I was so excited about finally getting King's story. Even though each book focusses on a different couple, I would advise reading them in order, starting with the first book
Love in Spades
. These men are so close...they are a self-made family, So they all have their own important part to each of the stories.
King's story was absolutely amazing and so was his love-interest Leo. Sweet, shy and quirkygenius Leo. I loved the awesome nerd !!! It is one of my favorite tropes...the nerd and the tough guy. Works for me every single time ;)
King was every bit as protective as I expected him to be. The UST between the two of them was delicious and also a bit nerve-wracking I just wanted them to get with the program already !!
When they finally gave in it was perfect... They were a wonderful couple, so sweet, caring and hot together. They made each other so happy, like they both deserved to be. King finally found a reason to let go of the past and Leo found his safe haven... It was perfection.
The background story also had my full interest and I was glued to the edge of my seat, the entire time I was reading. I just knew the shit was gonna hit the fan at some point.
It is hard topping Lucky and Mason's book, who have been my favorites so far. King and Leo come in at a close second...maybe it's even a tie. I guess I will have to do some re-reads to be sure
Oh and also.... I am a huge fan of Spideypool.... I ship them so freaking hard !!!
I am really looking forward to the spin-off series "The Kings: Wild Cards", and Jack and Fitz' story "Stacking the Deck". Jack has me really intrigued at the moment. He is a big nerd as well, and I fell in love with him a bit more while reading this book. Also... some extra kudos for Chip (and Joker)...who is awesome !!!
I’m sure that Cochet’s inspiration for King and Leo definitely influenced my love and enjoyment factor because if you don’t have a thing for DoB, then I can’t even…
What is it about a gruff reticent loner by choice, who really doesn’t need anybody except the family he already has, slowly comes apart at the hands of an unconventional genius who has no subterfuge? What is it about a seemingly misunderstood, lonely guy who’s been ostracized by the majority, finally feels safe with the one guy who can intimidate and take control with a scowl?
Well… it’s everything.
Here, Cochet excels at the push pull between King and Leo. It’s fun funny poignant and sexy. Toss in the usual action and suspense along with a good dose of smex, and this group of guys led by King, showcase just how their friendship is the best type of family there is.
A perfect conclusion to this set of four stories - I look forward to seeing more with the soon to come spinoff!
This final story centres on the Four Kings leader and all around stoic badass, Ward Kingston (AKA King), as he takes on a bodyguard detail for an old military friend, providing close, personal protection for a quirky tech genius named Leopold de Loughrey.
I loved this story so hard. King and Leo’s chemistry burst off the page from the very first adorable and fairly hilarious moment they met. They had a bit of a May-December thing going on, with King being a bit older than young Leo, but their connection was undeniable; regardless of their age difference or the contrasts in their vastly differing personalities, they simply fit together, like the final two pieces of an epic puzzle.
There was action, romance, and comedy aplenty, with an abundance of heart-warming moments shared between not only the MCs but also with the rest of the always lovable and totally badass cast of series regulars. The strong sense of family and brotherhood has always been one of the best elements of this series for me, and I was pleased as punch to have the other Kings play such prominent supporting roles in this story.
Diamond in the Rough has easily been my favourite read of the series and I can’t wait to see what Cochet does with the spin-off stories that are coming soon (but not soon enough)!
Still my favorite King and couple in the series. I just love them so much.
ETA: again. This is seriously my comfort go-to listen. I just adore King and Leo and the guys watching their grumpy leader fall in love. I just love this book so much!
ETA: Summer 2020 - this is just the most prefect comfort audiobook to listen to. I love Leo and King so, so much and I love Greg narrating all of these guys. Seriously, my favorite series to re-listen to when I want a pick-me-up!
Ahhhhhhh FINALLY King's story! And it was SO SO good!
King is the leader of his brothers in arms, one of the co-owners of the Four Kings Security team, and he's always been so serious and also begging for a story. And Leo - bright, shiny, happy, rambling, fish-shaped-snack-loving, adorable Leo was just PERFECT for him. Seriously, there couldn't be someone more perfect to make King laugh and smile again, and to bring peace and safety for Leo.
I loved how King and Leo got some time together alone at the beginning while King was protecting him in the secure area, but I absolutely loved it when they moved Leo to his home and King had the rest of his team come assist in protection. Most of all, I just loved how Ace, Lucky, Red, Joker, and Jack were so happy that their friend and leader was finding happiness. I LOVE how great friends and family they all are together, especially Ace for all of his antics and hilarious moments, he truly loves his friend.
I can't wait for the next series around these guys - seriously can't wait for Jack and Joker's stories, and then King's assistant and Ryden, too! And Gio!
Greg Tremblay/Boudreaux did a great job narrating this story, as he has with the previous books in the series. I truly hope that he'll continue to be the narrator for the spin-off series, as I can't picture these guys with any other voices than his. Ace and Lucky especially, since I'm sure we will still see plenty of them in the spin-off series.
I HIGHLY recommend this series if you love strong men falling for other men, some action, suspense and drama, and just sexy and sweet love stories.
ETA: Felt like a re-listen - I wanted a good combination of some steam, the laughs, and great friendships, and this was just what I wanted. Just as good the second time around too. And makes me SO EXCITED knowing that we should get the start of the spin-off series this year now that Charlie has mostly recovered from the horrible DSP-related year last year and can get back to the writing!
So much fun! Charlie's Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts couple Quinn and Spencer are getting married and the guys are along for the ride.
This was a freebie during the Valentines Giveaway on Prolific Works and I loved it, there's so much love around, even if newly loved up King had to do without his Leo, the rest of the gang was there to celebrate and joke and generally just make me happy reading!
Merged review:
Superb send off to this excellent series
I've been wanting to know more about the eponymous King who heads up the Four Kings security team since book one and with Diamond in the Rough, Charlie delivers an utterly brilliant conclusion to the series.
Ward Kingston is just my type of guy, brooding, honest, committed to the men who make up his extended family, loyal and a powerhouse of an ex-Green Beret.
Leo is the perfect foil for him, someone who can give him a daily challenge, who is a genius with a need for someone to remind him of the world outside cyberspace. They were both crazily cute and steaming hot together.
I liked the plot tension in this one and I didn't spot the bad guy, although with hindsight, it made perfect sense, and I liked how the pacing leading up to the big reveal kept giving smaller hiccups to be overcome.
The Marvel and Avengers references throughout just made me smile, as did seeing the rest of the guys heavily involved too.
Can't wait for the spin-off series and to find out more about the other guys.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
After reading the previous three books in the Four Kings Security series and getting to know Ward “King” Kingston a little with each story, I knew the man that finally stole his heart would have to be amazing and very special and this is certainly Leopold de Loughrey aka Leo.
When King is asked by an old friend to protect his son Leo from himself and the people that want to use him as a human computer, King did not know what he was getting into.
When they are compromised King takes Leo to a safe haven and brings in the rest of the gang to help protect Leo from unknown enemies, being in such close quarters the passion soon ignites between King and Leo and who knew Leo could be so bold, the little minx.
I loved the progression of the relationship between King and Leo and how they both made each other stronger, these two have come out on top as my favourite couple from this series, sorry Ace and Colton, they are just special everything worked for me from tough guy King to quirky geek Leo.
Of course, I loved having Ace, Lucky, Red, Jack, Joker and even Chip along for the ride, it would not be the same not having them there teasing and annoying King LOL.
The suspense had me gripped and I could not put my kindle down until I know what happened to MY guys.
I read the epilogue with a big silly grin on my face that was wonderful, and I am super excited for the spin off series The Kings: Wild Cards CANNOT WAIT, I am glad I took a chance on a new author Charlie Cochet and I will continue to read her books in the future.
Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below. “When it felt like the darkness was closing in on me, there you were.”
Ugh. King and Leo. One of my repeat listens. I don’t think I will ever get tired of this one. It hits *all* the marks for me, and I love the characters so damn much. They are just straight up adorable together. King takes the best care of Leo. They laugh and joke together, they cheer each other on, they can be vulnerable and sweet with each other, and they have amazing chemistry in and out of the bedroom. What more do you need, really?
I feel like a broken record in every review I do of a book with suspense, but man, I love it so much. Charlie Cochet does action and suspense really well, and this book is no exception. Leo is a computer genius, and King is a former special forces soldier who is now a part of a private military black ops group. Leo is trying to help the government, and King steps in to protect him. Hilarity, hotness, endearing found family moments and action ensues.
It’s book 4 in the series, but you could read it as a standalone without issues. Very highly recommend.

I've enjoyed each of the books in Charlie Cochet's Four Kings Security series, but I'll admit, I've been looking forward to getting King's story more than any of the others. I didn't even read the blurb or any reviews first so as not to spoil the surprise ;)
Diamond in the Rough is everything I'd hoped for, in just the way I know Charlie Cochet is going to do it! To see Ward open up like this is *gah* so satisfying. That delicious teddy bear we all knew would be lurking underneath that bear of a guy... it was wonderful.
Leo is completely adorable and the perfect fit for King. Polar opposites, these two are just what the other needs. Plus the delicious age gap that Ms. Cochet takes every advantage of (it's fantastic when Leo teases King about his stamina *heh heh*).
For any fans of this series who haven't tried the audio versions, I urge you to pick one up immediately. Greg Boudreaux's skills are the perfect fit for the characters in this series and it's easy to see he's having a wonderful time with his performances. Between his marvelous accents, the cheeky camaraderie and powerful bonds between these men, and the fantabulous love scenes, Mr. Boudreaux outdoes himself!
an audiobook copy of Diamond in the Rough was provided to me for the purpose of my review
Another Mission Impossible ish, entertaining book from the King Security universe.
I have a weakness for nerdy characters, and Leo, one of the main characters here, is the epitome of one: well versed in all things computer related, but socially awkward and insecure. He’s “recruited” by the US government to write some super secret and super dangerous program, and King, the “boss” (for the lack of a better term) of King Security is asked by Leo’s father to go and look after him.
So here’s the thing: I usually don’t have problems squinting hard with books like these when it comes to realism, because they’re meant to be fun, not real world documentaries. But as much as I loved Leo and King, it was a bit difficult for me here, because -other than me- the author had only a very loose grasp of software programming. So I rolled my eyes very hard at times when it came to Leo sitting in front of screens full of numbers and symbols and the way he interacted with the other analysts.
But that wasn’t the main focus of the book. It was a nice addition to the series, made even more enjoyable by Greg Boudreaux’ narration. I loved all the Marvel references, and I really enjoyed the very Mission Impossible-like finale.
The dynamics between Leo and King were a bit different from the other couples in this series, and I loved that Leo - despite being the younger one (I think he’s around 25 and King is 41) and supposedly socially awkward, gets bossy and sassy and actually is the one to seduce King first.
So again: not a 5 star read, but highly enjoyable, like watching an action movie while munching a big bag of popcorn.
I really enjoyed this and felt like it wrapped up the series nicely, but King was not at all what I expected. I really expected a gruff and grumbly impossible to get through to guy and he wasn't that at all, with Leo. I loved that. I liked seeing King kind of stumble around over Leo. Especially once my friend Meags pointed out that this was Charlie's influence for Leo. We all know I love, love, love me some Dylan! Woot!
So yeah, not what I expected but I'm happy anyway.
Bequia Read - That's about all I have right now. I'm trying to go back and jot something down for the books I read on vacation and most of them I seem to have only a random thought or two. I needed to write something though, all this blank review space was screaming at me!
I've been a fan of Charlie Cochet since the Thirds Series so in always eager and excited to read every single book she releases.
Not only was this King's book.
BUT.
This was an age gap romance.
And I was sold.
This is one of my favorite in the series. I feel like I'll never get tired of reading about the guys in the series. They make everything so much more enjoyable. And I love their dynamics.
I LOVED this one!!! King was everything I was hoping for and more. Leo was just too adorable for words. The two of them together just melted my heart! This is most definitely my favorite of the series.
I was really looking forward to King’s story, and I was glad it was a good one!
King gets asked by an old friend to watch his son Leo for him. The general has always kept his genius son hidden, but now that the military has him in their sights Leo has no choice but to complete an assignment for them.
When King meets Leo, the cute man with the glasses seems to be different from anyone King has ever met. Leo might be a genius, but he’s socially awkward and adorable.
King does everything in his power to make Leo comfortable so that he can complete his task and can get back to his life outside. But everyone seems to get out of their way to make Leo uncomfortable and King needs to give it his all to protect Leo from the people within the bunker.
When the bunker is breached, King has no choice but to take Leo out of there so he can protect him in a better place. And he needs to bring in his own crew, because he doesn’t trust the military one bit.
While Leo is trying to complete the assignment, the Kings are watching over him. But Leo and King are drawn together from the start and it’s not long begore they admit there’s something more between them..
I have such a soft spot for the super smart but socially awkward nerds. And Leo was just adorable. But he was feisty too, he wasn’t shy or quiet once he got comfortable.
If I have one complaint about this it’s that I was a little bored that the entire story played out in two locations. First we had King guarding Leo while he was doing his work in the underground government bunker, and then we had them holed up at Leo’s place. Not that it was bad, but it tended to be a bit boring at times. Especially the first 30% when they were in the bunker. Not that much happened and that bugged me a bit.
This book focusses mostly on the relationship development between King and Leo, and I really liked that. I was afraid there would be lots of ‘I can’t be with you’ or ‘I’m not good enough for you’ parts, but I was happy neither went there once they gave in to their desires.
I can’t wait for the spin-off with Jack, Joker, and who knows else. I especially want Jack’s book. He’s badass cute!
I needed some Greg Boudreaux and this did it. I for some reason will come back to these 3-3.5 star books and still enjoy them. I don't think i can go higher but overall this book does it for me haha.
Reread
Same as before I think that I wanted more from these two but overall good read haha
3-3.5 stars
Greg Boudreaux made this book.
I couldn’t decide if I like this book or not, but all I know is this can be read as a standalone if people were wondering and wanted to just read this one.
I did read book one didn’t like it but saw that this got good reviews so wanted to see if I could do this standalone and thank god you can!
Love a nerd and military man! But felt like more could of happened, it was very low angst and cheesy at times but sometimes thats needed in a book.
Overall cute read not much to write home about though.
Diamond in the Rough is definitely my favourite book in the Four Kings Security series. King and Leo are my fav couple had me invested the most. This romance was kind of a closed quarters one due to plot reasons, and I loved that about it. Our couple in close proximity for the majority of the time.
This one also had the best plot of the series. It caught and held my interest, and the action was intense.
Really happy I started the Four Kings Security Universe and can't wait to see these character's again on the other series' (Although, technically I started with Aisle Be There).
A complimentary audio was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I could listen to Greg Boudreaux read the phone book. His voice is just so yummy!! And when he started voicing Leo, I was a goner!!! Leo is just too freakin' adorable for words!! I just wanted to hold him and put him in my pocket, such a sweetie!
I read some of my friends reviews and not only did they enjoy it, they said they couldn't wait for King's story. I've not read any other book in this series and can say I see why they wanted King's story, but I wish I had had the same investment/eagerness. I don't know that you need to read the previous books in the story but it would be helpful to understand the connection the characters have with each other. I did like King, I adored Leo!
Ms. Cochet certainly knows how to weave a wonderful tale and I never wanted Greg to stop speaking. This was such a fun story and I know I will be going back to start at the beginning so I can see how these characters developed.
The relationship between King and Leo, hah! I had to laugh at King when he was dealing with Leo. He was NOT expecting Leo to be Leo and King does not know what he is in for. It was such a joy to watch them come together. I don't know if you could call Leo a bubbly person, but compared to King he is. With all that King has experienced it's understandable that he takes things seriously. Leo is a good balance for King.
I do recommend this but specifically the audio. I think Greg really made these characters, at least he did for me and I can't imagine only reading it.
I absolutely adored this book from start to finish. The story was interesting and riveting, and King and Leo had amazing chemistry from the start of this.
It very quickly moved from King doing a favor for the General by looking after/protecting his son to King choosing to protect Leo because of Leo, for Leo. Pretty much after the first meeting, I'd say, that King was hooked.
Doesn't make it insta-love, but they do fall for each other quick, over a few weeks, a few months, and the good thing is that their interactions felt real and made them fall in love fairly quickly 100 percent believable.
King melted around Leo and his hard exterior washed away with him and he was able to smile and laugh and have a good time, and Leo was pretty damn cute and sweet and wonderful, and the minute King walked into his life things got better for him - he started to see himself in a much better way, when before he was so insecure and always thinking the worst of himself because he wasn't quite "normal." It was pretty clear that throughout his life people had treated him pretty shitty because of that.
I was so happy where this ended up for them (although one thing that kept nagging at me was did the climax happen before Valentine's day or after? It had to be before because King wouldn't leave Leo alone...but also, why would Leo have been needed at the Pentagon in that short? I'm confused but whatever, I'll let it go lol) and that they were able to settle down and be happy together.
I loved how King was still kinda scowly and serious around other but around Leo he was all smiles and letting his walls down. I love romances like that were there's a seriously, scowly dude who meets a sweetheart who makes them melt with their cuteness, kindness and gentleness. Leo definitely had a wonderfully big heart, and he also was pretty funny and was able to get King to loosen up.
Oh also big tough "scary" guys protecting said cute and gentle guy, no matter what the cost, is also a big plus of mine, LOVED it in this.
The sex, when we finally got it, was pretty damn hot too if I do say so myself. Like damnnn, it was scorching ;) These two did not miss a beat together.
Two MASSIVE thumbs up from me and what a way to end the series. I'm super excited for Jack and Joker's stories now too, can't wait for the spin off! :D
This whole series was just fucking adorable! Such feel-good vibes. The books are hot, sweet, the characters lovable af and there is a ton to laugh about. And it also has a lot of capability porn 😄 (I so love that I have a word for that now!)
because of the fun factor I still love Ace & Colton (book #1) the most but King’s and Leo’s story might me the best in the series in my opinion.
And I need so say it again: Greg Boudreaux did such an amazing job with narrating these guys... fucking amazing. I'm sure he made these (audio)books even better.
Saying that, I’m glad there is another series by this author following other characters from the Four King Security Universe we already met.
Charlie Cochet has done an outstanding job with this book! I loved it! Out of all the Kings Ward Kingston aka King always remained aloof and a little detached while still being the center of King family. He really deserved his happy ever after but the man he needed came in the most extraordinary package of all.
Leo is a wonderful young man albeit shy and awkward. His sharp mind and quirky personality alienated his peers, and with no one to understand him his confidence is shattered and he feels that loneliness is his close companion. King and Leo's meeting is actually hilarious and showcases Leo's sunny personality and King's ability to be that steady force that Leo desperately needs in his life. Their connection is instantaneous but both men are cautious. Besides many years of different experiences separating them there are secrets that if come to light might prove to be unforgivable.
I loved to finally see all those hidden faucets of King's personality, those tender and vulnerable sides he only shows to those close to him. Leo affects him in such a way that he can not hide from him, he loses all his sense and control but at the same time he makes King stronger and a better man. He finds solace and peace with Leo, and Leo finally finds love and acceptance in King's arms. I really liked Leo's personality but I suspect that Leo is autistic savant. He is a genius in computer field but in all other areas of life he flounders. With his need to control and ability guide King becomes his perfect counterpart.
This story had a fair amount of tension, passion and feelings. There was betrayal, pain, humor and love. The secrets kept hidden came to light, and King was finally able to let go. Both men found their way home. I adored all the King men and their big loud family! This book was superb, and I highly recommend it!

Diamond in the Rough is the fourth book in Charlie Cochet’s Four Kings Security series, each focusing on one of the partners in the company. I have enjoyed this series overall, but I have to say that this one is my favorite. There is a slightly different tone here that just worked really well for me. I liked the way the focus here has a little more of a military vibe and the way the case connects with bigger issues outside of Four Kings specifically. The look into government black ops was interesting and while I had some ideas early on about what would happen, the story took some unexpected twists as well. The book still felt more heavily weighted on the relationship end versus the suspense side of things, but it felt a little more balanced here than in some of the earlier books, which I liked.
I also enjoyed King and Leo together. I am a fan of a good geeky hero and Leo is a nice balance between being a super genius who often lives in his own head, but also not being totally naive and clueless about life. I appreciated how on one hand King is in the protector role, but he also helps Leo learn to look after himself as well.
Really enjoyed this book - King the stubborn leader helps out his General friend to support his son. On meeting Leo he realized he may have met his match. Leo, a sweet, vulnerable genius who gets lost in his own world is being persecuted by his team and to top it off, targeted by an unknown group. King brings in the four kings and a friendship unfolds. Really easy read, warm and made me happy ❤️
Reread December 2019 I’ve had a string of DNF’s lately so I’m hoping to end my year on some good rereads. I love King and Leo. This is just so easy to read.
Original Review Wow, this book was sweet and lots of fun. Loved it.
I loved so much this book! I had high expectations, and the book aced them!! I am absolutely in love with this author's style, her stories are just the perfect mix of sweetness, friendship, action and fun!
All I can leave here is a note to remind myself to steer clear of this series and its author. I simply could not check enough disbelief at the door, nor stop rolling my eyes.
Usual Mr Tremblay...oops sorry, Boudreaux quality. There were a few errors, but what can I say?? With the right material, he's just so much better than anyone else...☺☺☺
***Book Review***
4.25 stars. The only reason I've not given it 5 stars is the fact that the 'traitor' was quite well telegraphed and couldn't really have been anyone else.
Ward and Leo were so well suited, Leo being the archetypal computer geek...extremely intelligent but pretty awkward socially and Ward?? Well, he wants to control every little thing he can but he can only do so much - his chosen family i.e. the Kings Security guys are everything to him, and he will do all he possibly can to keep them safe and together. Leo totally catches him by surprise, and to watch him floundering is really sweet. He falls in love with the younger man fairly quickly...he can't quite believe it himself.
This short snippet was funny, romantic and slightly steamy. Apart from family drama there were many sweet and tender words, moments of joy and celebration and promises made. I liked revisiting with the guys and their loved ones. It made my heart light and happy!
I was surprised cause it was better than I expected and better than the others in the series. I was also scared cause King had me intrigued from the beginning and I could not wait for his story but this was very good!
I just can’t get over how good it was!
King was such an amazing character and Leo complemented him so good.
King is sent to protect the General’s son, who he only has been hearing the best and how clever Leo is. Leo has been tasked by the government to create a program that could be dangerous to the world. When King arrives at the site where Leo is being living/held, things are not good. Everyone has been treating Leo the worst, so King takes action to make Leo’s stay there better and healthier.
Leo has a lot of issues. He is in a situation he doesn’t want to be. He’s been hurt a lot in the past because he was smarter than some kids. Sometimes he simply disappears and no one knows where he is until he appears again.
At one point things get out of hand, so King calls his family to help him protect Leo. Their love for each other and seeing them all together is so amazing. These guys have been through a lot and just joking with each other, teasing and laugh was nice. They are always there for King, no questions asked.
When King appears in Leo’s life, things turn for the better, for both of them. Their chemistry was very good and it felt natural and it was cute seeing them together. Both have issues from their past but they seem to be great for one another.
One plus thing that I loved about this was the Marvel references! It just fit and I couldn’t stop laughing when Leo told them who he thinks they are from the Marvel characters! And my favorite of all was the Spideypool reference! My favorite ship. I cannot help but imagine them cosplaying in the suits.
King’s story is what I expected it to be and more. Pretty awesome ending to a series but it’s not over yet. There’s going to be a spin-off series and we get Jack’s story! I cannot wait!
