We’ve all read lengthy books that in the end don’t say much of anything. Nothing could be further from the truth with The Underground Guide to Classroom Management . As a veteran teacher who is still teaching his heart out, I know how precious time can be. I’ve worked on this guide for over 7 years and finally whittled it down to the essential points I wanted to share on how to take control of your classroom. You didn’t get into teaching to correct behaviors, but it seems as though we spend a great deal of time doing just that. Classroom management doesn’t have to be something that drives you crazy. This guide will introduce you to a new mindset. It will teach you my time-tested methods. This guide will motivate and inspire you to do what you want to do—teach with fewer behavioral problems. I’m an elementary school teacher and all of these ideas will be effective at this level. This guide will also be invaluable to art, music, physical education, and STEM teachers. I imagine it would also be beneficial to pre-school and middle school educators, club leaders, and those working in after-school programs. With a little help and a new outlook, you’ll have your classroom in tip-top shape. You’re not alone. I’ve seen a lot of teachers chewed up and spit out. I was almost one of them, but I stayed and was determined to figure it all out. I did, and can’t wait to share it with you.
As a new teacher, I found this guide to be validating. I share some of these struggles and this guide provided wise tips and ways to think about the classroom and your students.
Easy, relaxed guide. Stereotype male art teacher, in formal education settings.
Describes his escapes, badly, from difficult classroom situations. If not in this unusual situation of the author, not much help for most teachers. Most teachers are so pressured by heavy curricula demands that bluff & bullying are needed to meet organizational demands. Not easy. Use of confederates in class management is not covered. Threats of parental involvement are used, Other teachers, seniors, classroom tactics, sustained tactics, use of other staff, room & agenda re-arrangements etc ... are avoided. Not all teachers can call in sick so easily. Not all teachers have wives & family for personal support.
It was nice to have some “real talk” about teaching. I am a second year teacher and I have been really frustrated with certain aspects of the job. Hearing from someone with more experience than me having the same challenges was validating. There are some good tips in here too.
Concise and easy to read, McGill offers a quick run-down of basic classroom management principles. I'm a teacher with over a decade of teaching experience. This book was a great reminder and refresher of what makes a classroom run smoothly. I'd like to reread this every few years.
There are some really good tips in here! This book is a fairly quick and easy read, but gives you a lot to think about and a lot of good tips to add to your classroom management toolbox.
