Turning On - This is the prequel to the Senor Bueno Travel Adventure series. I've got to admit it brought back a bunch of memories, good and bad, from that time period for me personally. I found this book more on the serious side although it was full of humor. Since I have already read the rest of the series, I don't know whether this should be read first by anyone new to Mr. Good's work or not. Either way it was an interesting read. I contacted the author to review his books. 4*
Breaking Good #1 - Had to break this down into small pieces nightly, else I saturated on the fun and silliness. The book did get better after a few chapters and I could read more in a sitting. This is a well written, funny book that moves along faster after a few chapters. The beginning chapters are OK, just in small doses. Mike tells a good story that keeps you involved in one way or another. I wanted to read Weird Trips and High In The Andes since Breaking Good was actually good. 4*
Weird Trips #2 - Another well written, hilarious book. Nine easy-to-read tales that made Depends more than a thought. Mike is definitely an entertaining storyteller and has the gift of gab and blarney. I enjoyed this book immensely, as well as Breaking Good. I found this book on some website giveaway. 5*
High In The Andes #3 - I get the author's newsletters now and wanted to review this book. This well written book comes from a gifted author full of blarney and humor. The reader can't put the book down easily. The vivid descriptions, the fast paced plot and the characters that fill the book are highly entertaining. I didn't have time to read this in one sitting, so I read a chapter just before bedtime. I'm a happy person anyway, but reading this much humor just put a bigger smile on my face the next morning. Thanks Mikey, when's the next book coming out? 5*
The Machu Picchu Blues #4 - Boy, this one took a while to read, but that's a good thing; more pages, more fun and silliness. Another well written, entertaining, exciting and humor filled book from a laid-back author. The experiences the author shares is well laced with humor and truth, and the emotions run the gamut. His descriptions are vivid and you're the spider on the wall, in the bus, in jail, hanging in the tree . . . 5*
Kona Gold #5 - More fun; more laughs; more adventures. If you've read any of the other books, you know what's in store for the reader. Well written with vivid descriptions, you think you're sitting there watching the events as they happen. You never get bored reading one of Mikey's stories. 4*
Maui Wowee #6 - Cool cover! It brings back memories of my blacklite posters, which I enjoyed in a natural state. Man, this is another ride on the Buenomobile! You can always depend on Mr. Good having an entertaining, and sometimes surprising, story to tell. His descriptions put you right there in the mix of things; his characters are a hoot and range the gamut from cool to crazy to just plain nuts; and his locations are always amazing. Hawaii of course is one of the major characters and she plays her part to the max with all her beautiful attributes.
Yes, there's drugs, some vulgar language, but lots of funny happenings. Mr. Good's stories are just about a period in our history told from a perspective that's not common in the history books, when they used to be written about actual history, not someone's agenda. I'm not or never was in the drug scene, but I have a lot of fun reading his books. If you like MASH, you'll like his stuff - there's some medical topics mentioned. His books are relaxing and I usually read a couple of chapters before retiring. 5*
State of Chaos #7 - Well written, fast paced and filled with humor, Mike takes us on another wild rollercoaster ride, picking up where Maui Wowee left off. Full of vivid descriptions, crazy happenings and more fun than a truckload of monkeys, forget the barrel, it's too small. His characters are always entertaining and interesting, but I think he outdid himself with some of these cats in this story.
I enjoy reading a couple of chapters every night just to relax by entering Sr. Bueno's crazy world. If you haven't read the first six books, don't let that stop you from enjoying this one. The background provided by the other stories give a good foundation and a lot of enjoyment, but a new reader won't be confused; just try to indulge in those monkeys, too. 5*
Many of my friends over the years were teens and twenty somethings around that time, and partook of the summer love, or sweated and watched their friends and villagers die in Vietnam. Some friends went to West Point, and were among the few survivors of classes during the Vietnam years. BBQs with friends and family could be pretty festive, so a lot of times, politics were avoided.
When I met President Reagan abroad, he was already beginning to show symptoms of the dementia staffers later spoke about. He fondly remembered Bonzo his monkey movie co-star, but couldn't remember the names of staff. Since he was also willing to autograph anything, like the movie star he once was, it must have been a nightmare for his handlers, the not knowing what Regan had signed.
It's funny that I remember more of this series as sardonic humor with political overtones, and reading these updated books now, so much more of the juxtaposition of tight and conservative with more Woodstock vibes is much more clear than I recall.
Fascinating re-read and insightful to discuss with younger friends and family, who seem more and other insights and social and political overtones and insights.
I need more chocolate and another reading!
The books pull you in, entertain, and bring you back for more.
How Mom and Dad and Uncle Dick Set Mikey On A Life Of Adventure
Imagine if Forrest Gump were a nerdy, exceptionally intelligent teenager who went away to college and discovered girls, marijuana, psychedelics, and rock music instead of going to fight in Vietnam. Imagine if Forrest's family wasn't the nice single Sally Field Mom, but the unsympathetic, un-understanding, farther than far-right Mom and Dad who instead of Forrest Gump, belong in Dr. Strangelove, a completely different movie.
Okay, never mind Forrest Gump. This is a story about Mikey Good and how he saved the world and discovered what he wanted to do with his life.
I love Señor Bueno, and I love this prequel to the Señor Bueno series. Full of headlines and historical info, it took me back to my own flower-powery past and the realization that, if Richard Nixon were my uncle, family gatherings would have been an even bigger nightmare. Young Mr. Good has my sympathies and whole-hearted approval and adult Mr. Good has my enthusiastic appreciation for giving us a book series full of some much needed laughs.
I'm volunteering my whole-hearted endorsement. It's a great book and a great series!
Yeah, I got it. I also read it. Just trying to figure out what to do with it. Can't use an ebook to supplement bum-wipe during a pandemic paper shortage.
Nah, just kidding. This is a funny spin on the dark days my parents grew up in. It's pure smartass, the Uncle Dick idea is a good one.and I've read the book on growing Mikey bought. My dad bought it too, and believes it.
There's real history inside this book besides the truth of the polyploidy BS it's an educational story, right?
And my favorite part- how often do you read something with the word smegma in it?
This is a very good prequel to the great 'Senor Bueno' travel series, it covers Mike's adventures through the period of the Vietnam war and Nixon's presidency. Although this was a rather bleak period of history in the USA, with protest, riots and other assorted troubles, the author manages to relate it in his usual irreverent and very funny manner. One of the writer's strengths is his character descriptions, and this book is peopled with his usual array of well-drawn, funny and rather caricaturish characters. I received an advance copy of the book, and have voluntarily written this review.
It may lack the exotic locales, intrigue, and adventure of his other books, but this book only goes to prove the author's incredible writing chops. He's got a great narrative voice, he's funny, charming, and kept me reading.
If you're of a certain age, you'll enjoy reliving the hippie experience of 1968-1970, including Richard Nixon as one of the major characters, with all the politics, rebellion, music, and maybe a wee bit of mind-altering substances of that time. I don't easily fall into a nostalgic state, but this book put me into one.
I just finished this newest addition to the adventures of Senor Bueno. This book speaks of his formative college years before he took to the sky for Hawaii and his plan to save the world. Mike lays out the framework of the times very well. I am happy to say I was too young to be a part of it! It was very informative and I learned probably more than I needed to. Luckily the history was interwoven with Mike's infectious brand of humor and cast of friends. Hopefully every new person who picks up this book will continue on to the rest of the series. They are all a lot of fun.
This is the prequel to the Senor Bueno series. It goes through Mikes college day! It covers the Vietnam War, bombing of Cambodia, the Apollo 11 trip to the moon and Nixon becoming president! It was funny, lighthearted look at the 60’s and 70’s through a hippy stoners point of view. This book covers the campus riots of the time. It’s ending is the start to Mike’s time in Hawaii! I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
Deranged and hilarious Coming of Age satire, from laugh out loud slapstick to matter of fact record of the horrors inflicted by their own forces of authority on Americans against/disillusioned with.the war e South East Asia. Many cultural references of the time for a trip down memory lane for those living through it at the time and obvious parallels with the political situation today. An informative and entertaining read for people of all ages. And it's funny.
This is an amusing well written informative story! Great fun! Cannabis is mentioned in this book so if that does not suit this is not for you! If you are a little easier with this subject matter then I do strongly recommend this, good adventure, great characters & overall a enjoyable read! I will look for more by this writer!
I thought this was a great prequel to the series. I admire the author's willingness to make fun of himself. This is a great read. I reviewed a voluntary copy from the author and this is my voluntary review.
Turning On is definitely fun! Besides reminds me of the sixties...
Thanx Mike B Good for reminding me of the sixties, both the good and a little bit of the hell going on now. I look forward to enjoying the rest of your treasures and having a great summer. Thanx again!!
Turning On is mainly fictional with events from the late 60’s-early 70’s sprinkled throughout. If you were there (and remember it, lol) you’ll find much humor even about the horrors.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
Very funny. Enjoyable and has great characters. I got many good laughs out of this. The writing was smooth and it was easy to read and form silly movies in my mind as I read the book. That's the sign of a good writer to me.
I have read both the original and the new and improved version and love them both. The revised addition includes a few more twists and turns with a taste of organized crime. Give this series a try! I guarantee you will be hooked. Enjoy the ride!!
pretty sure NOT kindle unlimited, but I own it regardless, try to keep up with his particular brand of insanity, but a city to city {right next to it} move has messed me all up on getting reviews out in time. Normally when asked if have done review it's DUH, but with the never ending move {having to move in sections as well as cleaning and recleaning} it's been issues. Here is the somewhat late review for this one.

A Senor Bueno Travel Adventure Breaking Good #1 High in the Andes #2 The Machu Picchu Blues #3 Kona Gold: #4 Maui Wowee #5 State of Chaos #6 Controlling Chaos #7
Weird Trips #2 Travel Adventures Gone Wrong {9 short stories} Revenge in Baja Turning On {sequel to Breaking Good}
This is a hilarious, subversive tour into the 1960's, a period when I was a university student. Was it a good dream or something else?
Mike Good emerges from his parents' basement to enter a liberal college against the wishes of his militaristic family. Mike spies on his Uncle Dick Nixon and takes actions that change the course of history. All the while he is diving into marijuana and sex. His adventures capture the period including the SDS, racial turmoil, underground music, and the drug culture. The chaos of the late 60's swirls around Mike and he decides that he must make the world a better place. Read this and re-live the past regardless of your views of the period and how you experienced it.
Once again another brilliant offering from mike good.some of the characters are people who are well known and put into this book in situations you might even believe are true.his satirical wit had me laughing at the antics of someone who if he puts his foot wrong has the parents from hell to deal with. !! I never do spoilers,so all I can say is I totally recommend this book and the rest of the series
