a brilliantly readable introduction to the classical world and it’s exploration of philosophy, culture and scientific ideas. will definitely be picking up some of the recommended further reading material, Gaskin has furthered my curiosity immeasurably

Gaskin baseerde dit boek op door hem gegeven lezingen - dat verklaart misschien wel waarom het boek niet heel interessant is uitgevallen. Het papier is een medium wat zich leent voor meer diepgang dan het gesproken woord, en die diepgang mis ik erg in het boek.

Deel I, een korte samenvatting van de Griekse cultuur, was wel interessant.

Deel II was de hoofdmoot van de tekst. In 120 pagina's passeren een dozijn filosofen de revue. Gaskin komt heel verontschuldigend over, alsof de lezer het Thales kwalijk nam dat hij 600 jaar voor Christus niet de correcte conclusie had getrokken over de oorzaak van magnetisme. Een geciteerd argument van Parmenides wordt -hoewel het erg interessant lijkt- weggewoven met de opmerking dat de lezer nu wel confuus zal zijn en we maar snel het volgende onderwerp zullen aansnijden. De enige filosoof die uitgebreid wordt behandeld is Epicures, waarbij hij naar mijn menig te veel wordt opgehemeld als de bedenker van de moderne atomaire hypothese.

Deel III bestaat uit een alfabetische lijst met steden en per stad een half kantje over waarom de stad zo gaaf is. Voor wie dit is geschreven is mij een raadsel - het leest voor geen meter en voor een naslagwerk is het wel heel weinig informatief.

Overall, I would say this book is an excellent summary of the most prominent Greek philosophies, and the myriad of further reading recommendations make it an excellent starting point for anyone who would like to explore the classical world.

One thing I can especially appreciate is the variety that the author gives, laying out a picture of Greek culture instead of loosely explaining clutches of disconnected philosophical concepts, enriching the book by displaying the cities and territories that these great philosophers originated from and by extension painting a picture of the broader Greek world. The first 5 chapters of the book are entirely dedicated to this.

Though a word of warning that philosophy in general is not the most easily digestible concept, so do not be alarmed if you do not understand everything after your first reading! Some of the arguments portrayed are very complex, but the author will give disclaimers when he has oversimplified an argument in order to stay true to the book's purpose.
Another thing I can appreciate is that the author will often put English translations of the original passages that contain the ideas being referenced, which makes it excellent for getting a feel of the original texts.

As a traveller’s guide, it is essentially a skim over each person and philosophy, allowing you to to find points of interest and help you venture into them. I would say the book succeeds in this regard.

I loved this little book! Not only does it easily explain the major philosophical schools of Ancient Greece, but it also puts them in the political and social context of the time, complete with maps so we can see where these people came from, lived and taught. It’s also a travel guide of sorts to the Eastern Mediterranean. Must read for those interested in philosophy and history.

En perfekt introduktion till klassisk filosofi om man som jag börjar nästan från 0. Det som verkligen sålde in boken var att den smyger sig in på ämnet genom att börja med avsnitt som handlar om grekisk kultur, vetenskap, samhällsbyggnad och lite allt möjligt. Sedan går den igenom individuella filosofer eller grupper av filosofer, och berättar då även om var de kommer ifrån, om deras liv och eventuella framgångar eller missöden (som i Sokrates fall). Den tar upp några exempel på deras viktigaste filosofiska bedrifter och citerar ibland extra intressanta delar. Då kommenterar även ofta Gaskin språkvalet i översättningen, vilket ger en extra dimension. För de olika avsnitten finns även rekommendationer för vidare läsning vilket jag älskar.
I slutet av boken beskrivs i alfabetisk ordning var och en av de historiskt viktiga städerna som nämns tidigare i boken så utförligt som möjligt om geografin (historiskt och i nutid), vad man vet om hur det såg ut då och hur stor staden var, vilka viktiga monument som fanns där, och vad som finns kvar att se idag. Det är härligt med en personlig beskrivning av dessa intressanta platser, i kontrast med att scrolla bilder på google maps där man får viss visuell information men noll intressant fakta om livet på platsen för flera tusen år sedan.
