Janet Dawson is the author of The Sacrificial Daughter, first in a new series featuring geriatric care manager. She has also written thirteen novels featuring Oakland private investigator Jeri Howard. Her first, Kindred Crimes, won the St. Martin's Press/Private Eye Writers of America contest for best first private eye novel. The most recent book in the series is The Devil Close Behind.
Her Jill McLeod historical mystery series features a Zephyrette sleuthing aboard the long-distance train called the California Zephyr in the early 1950s. The first in that series is Death Rides the Zephyr.
In the past, Dawson was a newspaper reporter and a Navy journalist. She has worked in the legal field and on the staff of the University of California Berkeley. She is a long-time member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime.
I’ve read the first 9 books of which is currently a 13 book series. The stories are interesting, and the characters are unique in a way; but the main character (Jeri Howard) comes off a little flat and predictable. I kept hoping she herself would develop more with each story; but I was let down. Several of the stories deal with the authors views at the time of writing, on social issues and her bias. To me these are just page filler. The stories typically end with Jeri being rough up in some form or fashion and getting justice without the use of a gun. Overall it seems they fall short of the full potential of the main character.
This anthology picks up where the first anthology ended. In the first set, Jeri was adopted by Black Bart, a feral kitten. This set tackles a runaway teenager, hostile takeovers and horse racing. One of her dreams comes true when she becomes a homeowner, something I doubted would ever happen because of all the pro bono cases she takes on. I enjoyed the variety of the cases she takes, but skimmed much of the tangential information. Overall, the series is a great read, with a step back in time to the California coast in the nineties.
Janet Dawson is an excellent writer and her stories are well thought out and the plots are exciting and plausible. Her characters are very well developed and run the gamut of human traits from the seedy to the highly principled. Jeri Howard is a very relatable person and as a Private Investigator has a keen eye for detail. I have enjoyed her stories immensely as they display a wide range of situations and outcomes with not just the crimes but social agendas as well. One can certainly immerse oneself in the worlds created by Janet Dawson.
Janet Dawson tells four more compelling stories in her second Jeri Howard Anthology. Her knowledge of her subjects and locations takes the reader with her, step by step and mile by mile. She manages to build suspense to just the right pitch an hour or so from each ending so that we only seem to take a breath at the very end. I also enjoy touching base with her friends, family, acquaintances and associates as time progresses from book to book. Downloading the third anthology right now from Amazon!
While they might be murder mysteries the blood and Gore are kept to the minimum instead of being highlighted. A good blend of solid investigations. I always like it when the females are not just dumb blondes, but are the ones in charge. Previous cases are mentioned in passing but don't take up any of the new investigation story time.
I found there was too much description about the geology of a place. Or the description of people right down to the last detail. This is all irrelevant to the story. If you cut this out, your four book set would be condense to two. Otherwise, it was enjoyable reading.
I have read all nine of the Jeri Howard books. I have enjoyed all nine of them. Janet Dawson is a fantastic writer. She keeps you in suspense until nearly the end. I am sorry to see the series end. All of these books are a most read.
The last two were the best in this collection. The earlier ones didn't come together quite as strongly for me. Fewer conversion remnants than previous collection, but still come confusing spots where it got letters wrong or punctuation was missing.
Awesome books. I loved the way Ms. Dawson managed to keep up her readers intrigued until the climax. All the stories are absolutely breathtaking. I have read all the books by Ms. Janet Dawson and I am a huge fan of hers. Kudos! Keep writing.
I have just read all the books from 1 to 9 and thoroughly enjoyed them! Great plots and believable characters. Twists and turns all the way. Jeri is a very likeable character and Janet Dawson does a thoroughly good job with these stories. Well done!
Liked the story line and the twist and turns. Thought that there was way to much in the descriptions at every turn in the story. Even so, I will be looking for more of her works!
Groan! Jeri takes up horse betting or actually returns to it. As a result she solves 3 murders, breaks up a horse fixing scheme and brings 5 criminals to justice. A fun read.
Jeri Howard investigates on a wide range of topics. I can tell the author did thorough research for each book. It is also interesting to see how Jeri's technics change over time.
A lesson on horse racing and terms. However, found it slow reading with too many unnecessary descriptions and details. Would refer this book to readers who enjoy horse racing.
I love Dawson’s straightforward descriptions that paint the scenes, the characters, and the mystery. The author researches topics like domestic violence, corporate raiders, and note-race-fixing.
Jerri Howard is a sharp investigator. There’s not a lot of blood & gore & I don’t have nightmares or sleepless nights. There’s just the right amount of mystery & good writing.
I'm not that into geography and elaborate descriptions. But once I skim through all of the inconsequential details, I do enjoy the plot and subplot twists .
Jeri is a very good investigator. She always find the bad guys. This last book was very interesting about horse racing. Race fixing. I learn so much from this story If you like horse racing you will enjoy this. Good stuff
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these three novels. Thank you to author, Janet Dawson, for your hard work and great imagination. I am sure they will appeal to many.
The first story was really good 3 1/2 stars, the second story was excellent 4 stars, the third story the best 41/2 stars and the last was good 3 stars.
