The Impossible Future

Rate this book
As if it weren’t tough enough to figure out why HIV patients in the highlands of Papua New Guinea are walking away from treatment. Now, Dr. Megan Byrne has to deal with an old lover who has haunted her memories for 46 years. Add a virus that likes to mutate, criminals slipping counterfeit drugs into the health system and a young woman persecuted for the death of her husband and life becomes truly chaotic.
The Impossible Future is woven from three threads – a lifelong impossible romance between two people, an exciting setting in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, and a team working to save villagers faced with a changing HIV situation.
Megan is the project manager of a small group of international researchers and consultants who work for the privately-funded Elderstone Foundation, and refer to themselves as the Elderstone Consulting Group. Everyone on the team has a strong background in field research and policy analysis, but each person also has unique responsibilities. Megan is a social psychologist and behavioural epidemiologist, with responsibility for liaison with the local government and other organisations. Miriam, a sociologist and anthropologist, is responsible for project administration and logistics. Her husband, David, an environmental scientist and engineer, is also the team’s pilot. Hannah is a social worker, lawyer & contracts person. Maria, the education specialist, also serves as the financial officer and funding manager. And, her husband, Thomas, is the computer and data analysis geek. Between the team members, there are 8 doctorates, 10 masters and about 170 years of experience. But, the most important thing the team members have is a realisation that they do not understand the questions and have no hope of finding the answers unless they work as a team with the people in the villages.”
This is a work of fiction, but the underlying issues are real in our world. Yes, there is a link between this book and The Invisible Mistress. If you read both, you’ll find the link.
