A zombie apocalypse was a ridiculous idea to people who were making plans to survive the end of the world. Everyone thought it would be a nuclear war, but when a virus destroyed civilization and contaminated the environment, survivors were left to forage for food and shelter. This is the continuing story of a handful of survivors who came together by chance and discovered a network of government funded shelters built to ensure the survival of politicians and important people.
From the coast of South Carolina and the historic city of Charleston to New Orleans and the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, north to Columbus, Ohio and cities in between, civilization is in ruins. Shelters are discovered and inhabited, but survival now means fighting the evil that man can become, as well as the infected dead and the dangers of mutations in a runaway environment. The survivors fight to take back the world, but they find as long as there are living people, there will always be a fresh supply of the infected. The war may already be lost as mankind slowly vanishes.
The author Bob Howard (1951-) was born in New Jersey to parents who met in Germany during WW II. His father was from Ohio and his ancestors were from the UK. His mother was born in Romania. He grew up as an Army dependent, and lived overseas in Germany and Okinawa for most of his childhood.
Bob is a veteran of both the Navy and the Air Force and was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. He fell in love with the city and made it his home. As a graduate of the College of Charleston (1978) with a degree in Psychology, he has worked in the field of social services. Bob has lived and worked in Charleston, South Carolina for 25 years then moved to Columbia, South Carolina because of a promotion with his job for the last ten years. Bob will retire soon and will live in Charleston, South Carolina to be near his children.
Bob and his wife Dawn (College of Charleston 1979) have been married 31 years and raised a son and a daughter both born in Charleston, SC. Bob has finally reached a time when he can enjoy writing, and the zombie apocalypse is his favorite genre.
Bob Howard's passion has always been writing. Bob's book, Alive for Now (http://www.realbobhoward.com/), is his first installment to the science fiction post apocalyptic genre, and he wants nothing more than to know that his readers enjoy his work.
I like the way Bob Howard writes transitions between storylines. He builds up tension very well, especially with the growing mega hoard going somewhere for some reason. I'm very sad about Sam passing. I also miss the main crew, especially Ed's narrative in this novel, but the other perspectives are also very good. I would've liked to have little Josh in the story more besides a few mentions. Seeing as the kid is 6 here and we know nothing about him.

Wow! This book is very well written. I have read hundreds of zombie/horror books over the years but none had my heart pounding as much as this book. Surprises and twists that I never saw coming. Bob Howard has obviously put a great deal of thought into the post- apocalyptic horrors. These scenarios are almost as terrifying, if not worse, than zombies. The stuff of nightmares, because they are all too real and logical.
I reviewed the first book and gave it a good review. Now 5 more books into it, I am thrilled and I don’t want it to end. The family in the series may not be related but are truly a growing family. The author has given me a vested interest in their welfare. I am a 68 year old grandma who loves to read and this series has my complete attention. I am ready to start reading number 7 on our long car trip back to Ohio from Florida where we are snowbirds. Hopefully there will be a number 8.
The captivating book series has been an absolute page-turner from the very first installment to this sixth volume. Each book has been so engaging that I found myself completely immersed, reading through the entire narrative in a single, breathless sitting. The latest book was particularly intense, keeping me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath throughout the entire reading experience. The author's storytelling prowess has consistently delivered a gripping and compelling narrative that makes it impossible to put the book down.
This is book #6 in the Infected Dead series and it was my least favorite but it was still 4 star worthy...mostly for the satisfying ending.
There were just too many new people introduced. When listening to the audio sometimes this causes unnecessary thigh high weeds to manage....not my favorite when it is a busy day at work.
Absolutely the best zombies series ever. Love the characters and how they interact and grow. I just can’t get enough. The only downside is waiting for the next one. Hope it’s not too long.
This was the most excellent and believable series I have read. I have recommended it to anyone who would listen to me. The characters were so real and I felt like I was beside them all the way. The ending was bittersweet. Thank you for keeping me entertained.
I love this series. Not one book has been boring. My interest was held from book one through this latest book and I can't wait for the next one. Very good, knowledgeable writing.
I have enjoyed every new book in this series “The Infected Dead” I have lived in North Carolina for a short spell, his love of this part of the U.S. makes me want to move back...sans the Infected of course...can’t wait for the next installment! Thank you Mr. Howard
I absolutely loved this series. The characters felt real and the shelters idea was a total twist to the zombie genre.I hope Mr Howard will revisit this series with new folks, New shelters, and our favorite characters from books 1 through 6
Not as good as the rest of the series. I really loved all the other books in the series. This book felt disjointed and just did not live up to rest of the series. Not a horrible story just not on the same level that I have come to expect from this author.
Totally awesome. The shelters that only rich rich can afford, are already done. Hopefully people like Ed, Chief, Tom, Jean , Kathy and Molly. Will be there to help real people. Want more,of this series.
This one went by really fast for me. It was fast paced and again heroes are found without thought. Loved the dedication to 'old' friends and the willingness to make new friends. Time is of the essence and saying goodbye and parting ways can't come soon enough.
The characters become real and you become enthralled with them. Im going to hate getting to the end of the series, but for now I’m going to keep reading.
I'm a terrible reviewer. I always come up short of what I want to say, I am a run-on sentence bandit, and it leads to worry that my incompetence will reflect on the author. This author, THESE books, are worth the pain because they deserve praise, & I genuinely want others to discover the world Bob Howard has brought to life. I read a book a day at least, varying genres, but dystopian/survival/end of the world are my favorite & I've read (it sometimes feels like) almost all of them. For new fixes I have to carefully sort through the new ones releasednin Kindle store. From the first book to (I sincerely hope it isn't the last) Buried for Now, I've been hooked. The characters, I could rave for hours about how funny the banter is and Howard's time spent creating individuals with personalities that are so perfectly fleshed out & intricately crafted with their own pasts & agendas that you instantly have a connection with all of them. The survival strategies (so many I'd never thought of myself or read in hundreds of other books) Brilliant plots surrounding struggles & trials that again, I'm impressed by how they've been presented in his writing. The zombies though. I could give 5 stars on the zombies alone. Zombies (ahem Infected) that are scary from first page to the last, every book. Deaths, with all the details and gore. It's that kind of stuff that makes the struggle of survival hit home. Howard took the generic end of the world zombie apocalypse and gave it new life. Plus, you can't help but become a better survivalist after reading this series. So, if you like being alive, for now, click the buy now. ;)
