The Witch of Blacklion

Rate this book
The Witch of Blacklion follows the lives of two couples in a small Irish community in 1915. Rory and Mazey have a happy life raising their five-year-old son and helping out the town with their lush garden. A trauma causes Mazey to pull away from Rory and find solace in her painting. Richard is the new doctor in town who is immediately mesmerized by a reporter named Laura. Their happiness is short lived when Laura and her mother survive after the ship they were journeying on sinks. She claims an angel saved her life, and becomes obsessed with proving his existence while digging for proof that local healer Old Shelley is a witch. The perfect lives of the two main couples are disrupted by a series of tragic events. Laura and Mazey each suffer through a trauma that changes their lives and sends them both on obsessive missions. Love and romance blossom, however, and touch the lives of Old Shelley the shape shifter and Mordecai, the guardian angel.

The “Joy” of Blacklion.

A beautiful and enthralling story about the lives of two couples in the town of Blacklion in Ireland during the early years of the Great War.
You have Rory and Mazey raising their son in an idyllic setting until Mazey withdraws into herself, consumed with hatred for the “local witch” Old Shelley.
Then there’s Richard and Laura, who have their own troubles with Laura and her mother Lana, surviving the famous sinking of the Lusitania thanks to the miraculous intervention of Mordecai, the guardian angel of the district whose command is to protect them. Laura herself is consumed with Mordecai, trying to prove that he actually exists and isn’t just a figment of her fragile mind. However, Mordecai has his own problems, as angels are forbidden to fall in love with immortals, which is exactly what Old Shelley is. A shape-shifting immortal.
This is not just a Paranormal Romance story, this is a magnificent tale of love and devotion and the strength of those emotions being able to overcome any trials, tribulations and traumas, set against a location and a country that is steeped in legends and myths.
This is a five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read, beautifully written and woven together by author Joy Ross Davis whose words read like poetry, smooth and lyrical.

Enjoyable Paranormal Romance
Fear of Witches and folklore can mar any existence. The Witch of Blacklion is a piece of skilful writing. There is a sprawling gallery of characters to get to know. How many couples? The first one that springs to mind is the farmer and his artist wife. Number two is the doctor and his neurotic but beautiful wife. There’s the doctor’s wife’s mother (who turns out to be a designer – out of love and talent) and a bed & breakfast host. Even the angel and the shapeshifter form a relationship. Those are the main characters — and come across as likeable. Regarding drama the Lusitania and the missile springs to mind. There’s the fear of witches and the attraction to angels. Angels and Shapeshifters can fall in love with one another. People may find it difficult to cope with traumas of any kind, but love conquers all. The book isn’t especially long. There are all the gorgeous clothes. When have I encountered this many exquisite frocks? It works – and fits the genre.

Good read

Had a hard time putting this story down to even sleep! My only complaint is the sudden ending... but then I guess you always leave ‘em wanting more!

Blacklion is a border village between Northern Ireland and the Republic, home to the medieval Killesher Church and to the ingenious fiction by Joy Ross Davis which interlaces angels, humans, history, mystery and unique characters in a captivating story which underpins the truth that outward appearances are deceptive. Wrinkled, hideous-looking Old Shelley’s moniker as the Witch of Blacklion fuels the village’s loathing and fright—but is her reputation in error?
Methodist preacher John Wesley, the potato famine, the sinking of the Lusitania, the earthquake of 1930, and war between the Irish and British for independence—all these overlapping threads of the past meld together in the rich tapestry Davis weaves with words.
The female characters in this novel are strong, invincible women and the men they love are not intimidated by that.

THE WITCH OF BLACKLION by Joy Ross Davis is a beautiful and imaginative story of love and family set in the small Irish village of Blacklion in 1915. It follows two families through both tragedy and joy and shows the strength and resilience especially of the main female characters. There are angels and shape shifters that intervene to save the lives of humans. They are mainly invisible, but in dire circumstances, they make their presence seen to certain inhabitants of Blacklion. The Witch Of Blacklion is a charming and magical book full of history and romance that drew me into the lives of the characters and never let go. I highly recommend it!

This magical, mystical tale left me wanting more. The Witch of Blacklion is about love, friendship and legend. Joy Ross Davis does a lovely job of weaving the real and mystical worlds of Ireland during the early 1900s. It’s a lovely read to escape into.
