Badlands #2

The Rising

Rate this book
A big storm is brewing, there’s a killer on the loose, and the ghosts of Myrtle Beach are restless. Psychic medium Simon Kincaide and his sexy cop boyfriend, homicide detective Vic D’Amato have their hands full helping the Grand Strand brace for rough surf, driving rain, and high winds as a winter storm roars toward shore.

Everyone’s on edge, and rumors are rampant about sightings of Blackcoat Benny, a ghostly omen of danger, and worse, the Gallows Nine, the spirits of nine infamous criminals hanged back in the 1700s, a harbinger of disaster. Rough tides wash the wreck of an old pirate ship into shallow waters, high winds threaten to damage an old mansion with a dark past, and the citizens of the beach town hunker down to ride out the storm.

As the skies grow dark and the sea turns wild, several men from prominent local families end up dead under suspicious circumstances. Simon’s premonition confirms Vic’s gut feeling—the killing is just getting started. As Simon tries to reach out to the spirits of the murdered men to help the investigation, he’s attacked by malicious ghosts that don’t want anyone getting in the way of their long-overdue vengeance.

With the storm hammering the coast, and new victims piling up, Simon is certain that the sins and secrets of the past are coming due, and that the murders have a supernatural link. Vic and Simon race to stop the murders against an unholy deadline, but as they battle rising tides and risen ghosts, can they save the intended victims without getting trapped themselves?

The Rising is the second novel in the Badlands series. It is a MM romance intended for readers 18 years of age and older.

Audiobook: ***2.5 - 3 Stars***
Story: ***3.5 Stars***

I'm boring, I know. Maybe the narration rubbed off on me... I liked the story - nothing to wow me enough to pop some heart-eyes, but still - and it was the most enjoyable for me so far in this series. It was a bit repetitive, though, otherwise I would have rounded my rating up. I mean, I'm the first one to admit that my memory has more holes than Swiss cheese, but I'm not that oblivious. I hope.

Somehow Kale Williams sounded a bit as if he would have given up on the story. At some point he only differentiated between one female (with the same accent for all involved) and one male (slightly breathless) voice, that's all and sorry, but that's not enough, because it made it so much harder for me to follow the storyline. :(

The Rising by Morgan Brice
Badlands series #2. Paranormal M-M romantic mystery. Can be read as a stand-alone.
There have been a number of suicides in the beach community off Myrtle Beach. Investigating because the latest family insists the victim would not have killed himself, Homicide detective Vic D’Amato feels uneasy at the crime scene. Having been told to pay attention to those instincts, he asks boyfriend and psychic Simon Kincaide for help. At the crime scene, Simon is attacked by a vicious ghost which sends the investigation down a historical path of vengeance.

Creepy and violent ghosts have Simon and Vic rushing to prevent the next victim while they also cement their newish relationship. Salt plays an important protective break of the paranormal. Multiple steamy scenes help temper the scary ghosts.

My favourite one so far in what is shaping up to be a quite excellent series which has a load of quirks that all add up to great storytelling.

Psychic medium Simon and his homicide detective partner Vic are still gloriously happy together when the threat of a big storm brings with it more ghostly troubles.

I loved both elements of this plot, the historical references to the Revolutionary War era and the Age of Piracy, and the vengeful spirit haunting the plantation.

Morgan Brice always turns out a polished narrative and this book is no exception.

I generally liked this book but I’m still disappointed. The first book in this series is great and I had some high hopes regarding this one. But for some reason I just couldn’t suck into this story.

And to be totally honest, I’m not sure what is the reason. Maybe it’s just me. Somehow it took me over a week to read this one and starting it I seriously thought that would finish it in two days staying late at night. Instead, in the meantime I read another book (500+ pages long one!) and started two others. After reading about 10% at once I was constantly losing my interest in the story.

The problem doesn’t lie in the plot. It is eventful and appealing. Let’s be honest who doesn’t like a good pirates theme once in a while. Vic and Simon are also not a part of the dilemma. I hate excessive drama in my books and I’m never good with the main couple breaking up over some minor issues. And fortunately, this is not a case with The Rising. Vic and Simon work together smoothly without any squabbles and I’m truly pleased about it. Some people may find it boring but I like it that way. I would prefer to see them more actually working together on a case, but I can bear with what I got.

So yes, I just can’t catch this thing that messed with my excitement over reading the sequel of the book I enjoyed so much. I’ve just finished reading it, it’s all still fresh to me. Perhaps I need some distance to put a finger on it. Will see.

Anyway, I love Simon and Vic and I will gladly read the next addition to this series.

BTW, the covers for this series are wonderful!

Morgan Brice did it again! She brought pirates, magic and spirits into a wonderful story full of suspense, humor, legends and love! Simon and Vic race against time to stop evil beings from wreaking havoc on innocents lives. It was thrilling and kept me on the edge of the seat! I loved pirate lore, the friendly atmosphere of Myrtle Beach, sweet moments that Vic and Simon had together.

Simon and Vic are settling into their life together. They are so cute sometimes, but what I liked the most was how they both struggled to accept the dangers of their jobs, how they sought out their friends' help, how they communicated and talked things through with each other. They have so much respect and trust in each other - it is humbling.

The case they are investigating this time goes far back in the past and interconnects with seemingly random acts of violence happening around Myrtle Beach and it's residents. It was all so fascinating, so well-written. Even with so many details everything was always clear and easy to follow, there was never a dull moment. Ms Brice spun her tale like a master storyteller and I enjoyed every page of it! This is a very good series about psychic who finds love and uses his talents to bring justice to those who no longer have voice. I love Simon for his caring nature, his need to help other and general attitude. I love Vic for his faith in Simon, his support and his loyalty to the book of the law. The ending is superb! It was a marvelous read, and I highly recommend it!

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

Ugh, the beginning of this book annoyed me to the point where I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue the series. At the end of book 1,

I was hoping those things would be picked up in book 2, but not even a mention. There are bonus novellas/shorts between book 1 and 2, but in my humble opinion, bonus material should not contain things that are important for the plot, for example the fact that Simon was apparently attacked by Vic’s ex boyfriend, which was casually mentioned in the middle of this book.

HOWEVER. Everything else was great. I’m really enjoying all the supernatural and psychic elements, as well as all the global and local folklore. I also enjoyed the part where Simon and Vic worked to understand each other’s need to be protective and where it was coming from, as it was hindering their work a bit and creating friction. So I’m continuing the series, eventually. I don’t feel a burning need to continue as of right now.

A somewhat weak 4 stars

These stories just keep getting better and better...full review to follow soonish!

This whole series would make for some awesome Halloween listening...

‘The Rising’ is the second full length novel in Morgan Brice’s ‘Badlands’ series and I can honestly say without reservation I should not like this series…I mean seriously it’s paranormal, there are ghost and demons and all kinds of things that go bump in the night and yet here I am firmly entrenched in it.

If you’re someone who likes all of that stuff with a solid dose of romance added as well than I definitely encourage you to check out this series and honestly you could probably pick up this book and not be lost but my suggestion is to start at the beginning so that you can get all of the background for Simon and Vic and their relationship as well as having a chance to meet the secondary characters who appear throughout ‘The Badlands’ stories, before diving into this latest book but then I’d also say if you like audio books this series is absolutely delightful to listen to on audio with Kale Williams doing an absolutely fan-freakin-tastic job as the narrator for this series, I think for me this is a very solid part of the reason that I’ve been enjoying the series so much.…so I just used the word ‘delightful’ when talking about stories with ghost and demons and who knows what else in them…yeah, my world just tilted on it’s axis a little.

Every bit as unusual as the genre for me is the setting. I have to admit when I think of settings for ghost stories…Myrtle Beach is not at the top of my list but that’s where these stories takes place and as unusual as that might seem to some…like me, the author’s made it work…I guess when you think about it you can probably find ghost anywhere if you know how and where to look, but I have to admit when I think of ghost I think of places that resound with age and history…places like New Orleans, Savannah or even older places that you’d find an ocean away in Europe. So even though it’s a little thing taking a location that’s normally associated with sun and fun and using it as the setting for stories about ‘things that go bump in the night’ adds that touch of different that can sometimes make a story stand out a little bit more than it otherwise might have.

‘The Rising’ takes place as Myrtle Beach is preparing to face one of the worst storms it’s seen in years...it’s a storm that’s not just promising to cause possible death and destruction in the present but it’s churning up things from the past…things that should have stayed buried in the depth of the oceans waters, things that could prove to be far more lethal to some than a mere tropical storm.

It’s going to take Simon, Vic and Simon’s network of friends as well as some help from beyond the grave to put the past to rest this time. I’m very much a fan of Vic and Simon and they’re fast becoming a favorite pairing of mine and while I love the parts of the story that deal with their growing relationship, I have to admit there was more than one occasion when we were getting some Simon and Vic time that this reader was all about getting back to the rest of the story. I was very solidly hooked into what was happening with the storm and all of the ghost…pirates, villains and others. I loved the rich and colorful history that the author created for this part of the story with it’s tale of pirates, intrigue and betrayal and if that’s not enough to make you curious there’s always the curse of the Gallow’s Nine and yes, you’ll need to read the book to find out what that’s all about.

A winter storm is blowing into Myrtle Beach and the residents there are concerned. Pack up and evacuate or wait it out. So... not only do Simon and Vic have to deal with a storm coming but also a string of suicides that could be/probably are... murders...visions of pirates and privateers... and a poltergeist troubling the construction crew at a local historical manor. Simon...the psychic medium and Vic... his homicide detective boyfriend, have their hands full. The story combines the ghost stories with a real-world murder and some local history. Two different local legends that collide with strong and evil forces. A really good mystery and extremely lovable characters. Please forgive me for sounding like a broken record but I wish these books were longer.

“If anything happens, call the police. Don’t try to be a hero,” Simon warned. Pete grinned. “Me? I’m more like the comedic sidekick who runs away to live to fight another day.”

4.5 ⭐️

The Rising brings us into a giant storm about to hit Myrtle Beach, where supernatural ghosts of pirates past are ready to wreak havoc on Simon, Vic, and the people of Myrtle Beach. After a large hurricane blows a hidden pirate ship above water, spooky stuff starts happening, and it is obviously up to Simon—our psychic medium—and his hot homicide detective boyfriend Vic to solve the cases popping up left and right.

To be fair, it is mostly Simon doing the heavy lifting. My dude just jumps into it. He is ready to help those in need, and since he can see and talk to ghosts, he feels like it is his duty. I really enjoy that about his character.

We get some more hot times between Vic and Simon, but we also get some relationship development, especially now that they are living together. Moving in brings more work and balance that they need to figure out, and the closer they get, the more paranoid and scared they become for each other’s safety.

It is a fun book. I love me some pirate ghosts, and we even got a plantation haunting that was super creepy. I mean, if you own a plantation, you should absolutely be haunted, obviously. Either way, I had a lot of fun with this one. Even though it has been a while since I read the first book in the series, I think I will slowly continue with it because this is some good hot fun.

A sunken treasure ship, pirate ghosts, a haunted mansion, and a storm on the rising! This latest pair of paranormal cases for Simon and Vic promised so much of the good stuff and I could hardly wait.

The Rising is book two in the Badlands series. The books have a strong romance and character development besides offering a fab paranormal suspense element so they work best when read in order.

It's after the New Year and Myrtle Beach is preparing for a huge winter storm to hit while gossiping about the new discovery of an old pirate ship wreck that came to light after the last big storm pushed the wreck into shallow waters. The ship has a strong local tie with the Gallows Nine hung right there after the ship's capture and they swore revenge on all those who stood in judgment of them and let the influential family who hired them go free. Now, the whole town is in a pirate and treasure frenzy as divers work to beat the storm's arrival and document the new find.

Simon is uneasy and feels more than a physical storm on the rise. He is hired to help a contractor settle the ghosts in a local plantation house before his men are injured by the ghostly mishaps that occur. Meanwhile, Vic and his partner are called in on a new spate of locked-room suicides that seem unconnected until the horrifying truth comes to light. Simon and Vic must stop the powerful being behind the killings before the storm arrives.

I enjoyed this latest installment so much. Pirates, treasure ship, haunted mansion- what's not to like about that? There were a few different cases here and lots to distract, but it was also neat to see Simon and Vic coming to terms with what happens for a pair attempting a long-term relationship when they both work dangerous jobs. Simon fears for Vic every time he walks out the door to 'serve and protect' and Vic knows enough to fear for Simon every time he faces off with the darkness of the spiritual world. I liked seeing them work through fear and a tendency to get overprotective, but also appreciated that they weren't stupid about the danger. Simon, in particular, has come a long way. He keeps Vic in the loop and he's not afraid to take back up or ask for help. Vic has come to respect Simon's abilities and those he chooses for his back up so doesn't try to interfere. They are still one hot, sexy couple who can't get enough of each other, but now it is balanced by a daily life and understanding that makes me have no trouble believing in their love and relationship.

As to the murder mysteries that are all tied to the supernatural. I loved seeing how both guys' expertise came into play. Simon's ghosts and intuition led him to some truths while good old-fashioned detective work on Vic and Ross' parts led to the rest. The solution wasn't figuring out who so much as how they were going to stop them. That ending was intense and I couldn't stop listening at that point.

Speaking of listening, Kale Williams continues to be the series narrator and I think he's a fab fit. He gets the regional accents for those from the Myrtle Beach area and gives each character a distinct voice that's easy to know who's narrating or talking. I liked how he does the pace and tone without over- acting which would be easy to do with all the suspenseful and exciting moments in the story. I would definitely pick up more books he has done.

All in all, this one beat out the first book by a long shot for me and I am jazzed to see what comes next for Simon and Vic. This series is for those who love spicy hot m/m romance paired with intense and a little gritty paranormal suspense.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

This series just gets better and better. Simon and Vic make an amazing couple....still a little unsure of their relationship but working on it.
They are drawn into a world of murderous ghosts, psychics, witches, pirates and magically enhanced storms.
Wonderful world building with just a little tweaking of this world, great plot, lovable MC's with just a touch of crossover with her other series'.
Well worth the read.

I’ve read several books/series by Morgan Brice and I love them all, but I think that Simon and Vic are probably my favorite couple. For the record, Badlands is also set in my favorite locale… but that’s probably because it’s familiar. I always consider it a bonus when a story’s setting is either a location or a type of location that I can clearly “see” even more than the author describes as I read.

The Rising was intense. Not only did Simon and Vic have to fight against vengeful ghosts and the people that they had connected themselves to, but mother nature threw them another curve with an impending storm. Which spirits used to their advantage. There was little or no down time and danger seemed to be lurking around every corner.

I think one of the things that I like most about Simon and Vic is their growing trust for each other. Especially since both of them had experienced the opposite from others. I also like the depiction of ghosts or spirits as being not inherently evil, but sometimes even helpful and protective. Simon and Vic also surround themselves with good friends as well as family who have their backs whether they’re near or far.

One of the other things that I enjoy about a lot of books in this world are the ties to other books in the Brice/Martin world. As for Badlands in general, I love the way that this series is progressing and I can’t wait to pick up the next one. 😉

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of The Rising. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This one, though Simon still gets put through the ringer, is really kind of fun..well, pirate themes seem fun anyways. So Simon's assistant thought... Until people show up as "suicide" victims and the families don't believe it, so Vic is sent to investigate with his partner Ross. Vic calls in Simon, as Simon is now contracted with the MBPD. Of course, this turns out to be a PNR murder/mystery.

My first thought, and I feel kind of bad for it is, Simon seems to do ALL the police's work!
Every case seems to be PNR and he's always the one in the hospital. What is Vic really doing??

That being said, this was a fun mystery. Well I thought it was fun, and scary-ish. I mean, pirate ghosts! And one ends up being related to you? wheeee! And you get to get historical information dug up in the process? even cooler ((Whether these ghosts/people existed, I have no idea, I doubt it, it's fiction)).

Miss Eppie and Gabriella are still as badass as ever and Simon gets to add a few more to his Skeleton Crew. The relationship between Vic and Simon has grown as well, and I don't think Vic is a jerk like he was in book 1. I also love his relationship with his work partner and the advice he gets from him.

There were some loopholes. Such as, when they were all solved, what did they tell the "suicide" victims families. I don't think they can tell them its ghosts! I don't recall that being addressed fully.
But, I can let that go. :)

The Rising was excellent. A paranormal mystery just like the rest of the series. And featuring the same couple as the rest of the series. Simon and Vic are well established as a couple by this point and there are none of those misunderstandings that some authors throw at their characters to cause friction. The relationship is loving and solid, but they are finding their way into accepting that they both have dangerous jobs. and the author handles this situation really well. Honestly the relationship doesn't need too much conflict as there is so much going on in the plot. Murders, suicides, ghost pirates, long lost relatives, a haunted house, possession, and a massive storm.

This book is exciting, well-paced, brilliantly plotted, and with a great relationship.

In the first book of the series, Sebastian "Simon" Kincaide solves the case of the serial killer and leaves the evidence for homicide detective Vic D'Amato and his partner to follow up on as he decides that tackling the perpetrator is his job to do. He goes head-to-head with the madman and only manages to survive when the ghosts of the murderer's victims band together to exact vengeance. The captain of the Myrtle Beach police department, in addition to several others on the police force, is convinced that the paranormal exists and that Simon's psychic talents are authentic. Simon is offered a position as a consultant for the police department, making it possible for him to work more directly with Vic for those murders linked to supernatural activity.
In 'The Rising: Badlands Book 2', the folks of Myrtle Beach are whispering about the sightings of the spirits of Blackcoat Benny and also the Gallows Nine that was hung in the 1700s for murder and piracy. As a presage of disaster, folks are expecting winter storm heading for the Grand Strand to be one resulting in extensive property damage, personal injuries, and some mortality. When the rough tides wash an old pirate wreck into shallow waters, murders start to occur around the town. Working as a team, Vic's standard and Simon's paranormal investigations determine that the victims are descendants of the officials responsible for having the Gallows Nine executed centuries ago. The malicious spirits were exacting revenge for the officials' willingness to overlook the man that the members of the Gallows Nine worked for--a rich, entitled, and well-connected crook who went unpunished all those years ago.
In addition to all the other very scary and delightful frightful content, the writer includes a connection for Simon with a male ancestor who is a weather witch who is able to make use of Simon's corporeal existence to do battle with malevolent spirits. As was the case with Badlands, this novel features great world-building, spectacular character development (even the ghost does some growing, for goodness sake!), with extraordinary pacing and outstanding balance making this another page-turning addition to the series. Give yourself plenty of time to read the book from start to finish in one sitting as it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to put it down!

5 Stars!

This is book 2 in the series, although I guess you could technically say it's book 3, since there's a novella in between and they need to be read/listened to in order.

I'm loving Simon and Vic, their relationship has been growing very naturally throughout the books and I adore that even if they are still dealing with some issues, they do it in a mature fashion. It doesn't hurt that the chemistry between them is amazing or that they're hot, hot, hot together, but above all, I love that they either talk through things or consult with their friends before doing something rash, especially in Vic's case, and how much they support each other and their careers, even if they're both dangerous professions in their own right.

The cases were intriguing and well-thought out, weaving an interesting (and sort of scary) paranormal story with some criminal elements and balancing it out with Simon and Vic's relationship with each other and their friends, who I love and add a lot of humor and assistance to our heroes. Miss Eppie, Gabriella, I really hope this isn't the last we saw of Josh and Dante.

Kale Williams did an outstanding job with the narration, I loved all the voices in the book but he really took the cake with Dunwood's ghost, that was creepy! While I've had the chance to read these books in e-book format, there's something about audio that adds up to the overall experience, so if possible, I suggest listening to these books, or just do both, they're that good.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

The Rising is the second full book in Morgan Brice’s excellent Badlands series. The series also includes the holiday novella, Lucky Town, as well as some short stories, set in between the novels. As the series follows Simon and Vic across the books, you will definitely get more out of this one if you are familiar with them and their relationship. However, the plot here stands alone and so you can definitely jump in here if desired.

As with the other books in the series, Brice does a fabulous job combining the ghostly paranormal with a law enforcement thriller, and tying it all together with a wonderful sense of place and history. In this case, we get to explore more about the pirates that used to terrorize the coast, as well as how some of the locals got involved in smuggling and other illegal activities. I loved the way Brice brings all these elements together, particularly with Simon and Vic’s investigations. The story starts out with a lot of seemingly unconnected pieces and slowly things all start to come together. The story gets thrilling and nicely twisty and I really enjoyed seeing how all the different elements end up connecting throughout the case.

The Rising is book two in the Badlands series by Morgan Brice. Myrtle Beach Boardwalk residents and shop owners were gearing up for a winter storm when an ancient private ship moved into shallower waters. Old mansions are starting to be battered by the storm, and someone is murdering people to keep a secret. For Simon Kincaide and Detective Vic D'Amato, It was a race to find the answers. The readers of The Rising will continue to follow Detective Vic D'Amato and Simon Kincaide to discover what happens.

After reading book one in the Badlands series, I read another book called The Rising and was not disappointed. Morgan Brice knows how to ensure that I engage with her characters and the stories. I love Morgan Brice's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. The Rising is well-written and researched by Morgan Brice. I like Morgan Brice's description of The Rising's settings, which complements the book's plot.

The readers of The Rising will learn about the consequences of storms on communities and then live near the sea. Also, the readers of The Rising will learn about the history of privates that travelled up and down the Carolina coast.

I recommend this book.

Pirates and Ghosts and Romance… Oh my!

Do I have your attention? Yes, this book has all of this, but it is much more than that. It is categorized as M-M romance, and has the hot sex scenes to meet that criteria, but those scenes are like an added touch to a compelling story.

As with all of Morgan Brice’s books, it’s difficult to tell when truth ends and fiction begins. The paranormal events described are grounded in well-researched history with enough actual legends of the area (Myrtle Beach) to send me running to google which stories are real. The plot of this tale has enough history and background that it could be true!

Then there are the main characters: Vic & Simon. They struggle to explore their relationship in the midst of crisis and unusual abilities. Their emotions are deep and believable. A diverse cast of supporting characters supports them, offering sounding boards for them emotionally and in solving supernatural crimes.

This second book in the Badlands series builds on the characters introduced in the earlier book. I’d recommend reading both.

I received this book free as an ARC reader for voluntary review.

This might be my favorite book in the series! The Rising picks up shortly after Lucky Town, and the adventure, steam, and ghosts are not quitting.

Story: 4.5 stars
I absolutely love Simon and he makes this series. Don't get me wrong, Vic is great, but Simon is my favorite. The story flowed and kept me engaged. On top of that, the action and plot are growing. Murder, mystery, intrigue...this is what happens when your suspects could be alive or dead. With new and old characters, the story is a must read and I had a hard time stopping when I needed to go somewhere. I can't wait to get into the next installment.

Narration: 4.5 stars
Kale Williams delivers another outstanding performance and brings this book to life. He has the ability to give each character their own voice.

Overall: 4.5 stars
This was a great installment to the Badlands series and I think it might be my favorite one so far. Well-written with a great cast of characters and a great narration, it is a must-read and one that is only enhanced by the audio. I highly recommend this 4.5 star book today. One-click!

The Rising #2

It was a lot of fun to delve into a book set near Myrtle Beach, especially with real local lore.

Vic and Simon have good chemistry, and it was good to see Vic realize that he needed to pull back a bit from wanting to approach their relationship as an investigation, and give Simon space. Ross is a good secondary character, he gives Vic good advice and helps him put his relationship in perspective. As much as Vic seems to worry about Simon getting hurt, Vic seems to have more close calls.

The book flows smoothly, maybe a little slow at times, but interesting. The suspense and plot are enough to keep my interest in future volumes. If you like mysteries, ghosts, and mild heat, you'll probably enjoy this.
