The Beast Within: A fantasy romance

Rate this book
From moonrise to moonset, the beast will rule.

Caleb’s family had a secret. One they’d held for over 300 years. One he’d reveal to save one woman’s life. Because she was the other half of his soul, even though it was her kind who condemned him to be the beast he was.

Lissette knew her family had secrets. What family in New Orleans as old as hers didn’t have family legends, most she disregarded as nonsense. Until she came across something leaving her no choice but to believe. Especially, when it meant her life… or his.

The Beast Within by LaVerne Thompson
Paranormal wolf shifter romance novella.
Caleb’s family was cursed generations ago for the males to turn into a wolf during the full moon. Caleb has managed to control his wolf during the change but nothing can stop the change from occurring. Lissette and her family are aware of rumors of cursed men turning into wolves but she is careful and knows how to handle herself and a gun.
And doesn’t that just set up the story?

“He liked being able to tower over her.
Even his beast took an interest. It rode him to take her. It rarely ever did that.”

🎧 this book was narrated by Marcus Arona. He did a great job with two different distinct voices and emotions. For the first hour or so, I was displeased by the lack of proper language, and slang or unusual pronunciation of a particular word. I was eventually wrapped up in the danger, mystery, graphic steamy sex, and Caleb and Lissette’s attraction to each other. The narrator took me from close to hating to enthralled. I bumped the speed up from my usual 1.2 to 1.5 because of the mentioned initial issues.

The Beast Within was a shifter book with a lot of heart. Caleb's struggle to control his family curse gave his character a lot of depth. Lissette was a sassy woman and I loved that she was always packing heat, even if she was being less than smart wondering around the New Orleans rivers hunting for flowers at night lol. I didn't love the audio of this book, if I'm being honest, but I thought the story and characters were good enough to try to look past that.

I read this snippet of "The Beast Within" in an email, and I was really looking forward to its release.
So as soon as this book went live, I went reading it and I loved it.

At first I was a bit disappointed because the blurb I've read lead me onto a false trail that this book was set in the old times. But after a few pages everything made sense and I really enjoyed the read.

Can't wait to read book 2!

This was quite an intriguing story and an interesting approach to a shifter story. A full circle is completed from past to present between Lissette and Caleb’s families. Lisette becomes involved with a man who has spent his life trying to tame the Beast Within while at the same time being the object of obsession to of a man who is more beast than man. I didn’t love the narration and this may not be a typical book for me but I enjoyed the overall story!

After being cursed for over 300 years , Caleb and his family have been keeping the secret . Until the day he sees Lissette at the bar he owns . He feels this pull to her because she is the other part of his soul . What they don't know is that she can be the salvation for him or the death of them .
The characters in this story are well written , Lissette is a strong woman who doesn't take anything from anyone . She also comes from a long line of women that have an insight . She can kick butt and will do anything to protect the ones she loves . Caleb is an alpha , oh so sexy and he knows what he wants and will go and get it . He is also caring and will do anything for those he cares about . I liked these characters as individuals but as a couple they were hot . For every good guy we also have the bad guy . Terrell well he was just a complete idiot and stalker . He was oh so creepy. Now Camille well she is just clueless and kind of the comic relief in the story . I picture her as a blonde for some reason . Then like all good romance stories we have the family that likes to interfere and boy do they ever .
I went into this story not knowing what was going to happen . This book took me by surprise I really got into it . The characters are well written and you start to love them . The author takes us on an adventure through New Orleans and the bayou . There is action , intrigue and oh so much romance . This is a book you can get lost in for an afternoon . So if you want a good read for you summer beach read check it out .

This is an all encompassing read that makes you think and feel so much pain as well as undying love. A curse created out of hurt and pain inflicted by the greed of many, lasting multiple generations, and the only way to escape it is through an act of love so powerful it means putting ones own life on the line.

Lisette is one strong female who takes nothing from no-one, who knows how to handle her own, and would do anything to protect the ones she holds dearest. Caleb is an alpha male not willing to settle for anything less than what he truly wants and deserves. When the two meet their intensity and passion is enough to make everything else melt away.

I was very impressed by the quality of this author's writing. Not having ever read any of their other works I didn't know what to expect. I must say after reading The Beast Within I will definitely be looking into more.

Centuries ago the deNuit family was cursed. Only the males suffered the consequences of this curse, but the family itself had a curse in itself. The woman were either killed, committed suicide, or were institutionalized.

When Caleb and Lissette meet sparks ignite. But there are secrets that Caleb keeps close to his chest for fear it will scare Lissette off. There's also the little fact that it's Lissette's ancestors who cursed the deNuit family and a stalker who has it in his head that if he can't have Lissette, nobody can.

Will these two be able to overcome a curse that placed upon Caleb's family out of hate? Will Caleb and his family ever have complete control over the beast?

I actually enjoyed this story. I liked the fact that these two families overcame the hate and proved that maybe with love any curse can be controlled.

What can a person say about a book that has great characters, a curse, curser (the person/family who did the cursing) the cursee (person/family who had the curse put on them). love, drama, mystery and more. I loved that the book started out with the story behind why the deNuit family is the way they are because of a curse put on them. It was never boring and kept me excited for the next page. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm in the mood to read this again. I might have missed something the first time thru and I don't want that.

I havent read a regular pnr in awhile. This was a great refresher and it was different and not more of the same which is why I kinda stopped reading the typical pnr shifter books. It wasnt overly long or drawn out but there was enough to keep me interested. Enjoyable! Ohhh on top of it all New Orleans which I love reading about.

The book started out telling you the why and the background so you as a reader are not lost once you get into the story. I really enjoyed this book the characters Caleb and Lissitte were both strong people. There was love, drama, mystery, stalking all good components in a book. Best of all no cliff hanger! If you enjoy short reads then this is a great book for you.

Not my cup of tea

I really liked the idea of this book it just didn't hit the mark for me. The story felt very rushed at times like the author was in a hurry to get to the sex scenes.

The Beast Within

A wonderful paranormal shifter romance. I enjoyed the characters and how they challenged each other. I would’ve loved to see a little more depth with the characters and their relationship but other than that I loved it.

Caleb's family has kept a secret for centuries. A curse with no cure. Lissette's family is responsible for the curse. They meet one night and can't keep their minds off each other. Caleb's never felt this way and neither has Lissette. Is fate at play or something else?

Crimes of generations past leave burdens carried on.

I find myself horrified. Difficult to look beyond the scope of history beginning this tale. Beyond the evil of it's origin there is more. A heated passion and love grow. I heard before love forgives & heals all wounds.

I would recommend this book if you like to read sweet and romantic stories, it has been very well written with fantastic characters and great detail. The characters tend to be snarky and so full of life and I love it, just goes to show that even a beast can be loved

I tend to stay away from third person POV, BC it can get confusing wondering who is saying what after a while. This wasn't confusing at all. It was really well written. I wasn't ready for it to end though.

Much better!

I have read both versions of the story, and I love this one! I'm a fan of tying up loose ends. It's great to know what happened with the curse, and with the characters.
