In 2009, Barry Finlay went up a mountain as an accountant and came down as a philanthropist. After over thirty years in various financial roles with the Canadian federal government, he took his life in a different direction and climbed Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro at age 60 with his son Chris. The climb and their fundraising efforts to help kids in Tanzania changed his life in a number of ways, including the start of his writing journey. He wrote his first book, the popular Kilimanjaro and Beyond: A Life-Changing Journey with his son in 2014.

He followed that up with the hilarious travel memoir, I Guess We Missed The Boat, and then The Marcie Kane Thriller Collection was born. Each of the thrillers has a socially relevant theme.

Now, he has introduced a new character named Jake Scott in a mystery series. The first in the series, Searching For Truth, debuted in 2021. The Guardians of Truth followed, and The Secret Truth was released in the fall, 2024. Shadows of Truth is scheduled for release on September 15, 2025.

In 2023, he decided to write a book around his popular quote, "Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing." He interviewed eight people facing a variety of challenges and wove his own story into the motivational Just Keep Climbing: Inspirational Stories for Overcoming Challenges and Living Life.

Barry's books have received multiple literary awards, and he was named to the Authors Show's list of "50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading" in 2012. In 2013, he received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his philanthropic work in Africa. He lives in Ottawa, Canada, with his wife Evelyn.

A prequel to the Marcie Kane Thriller Collection, Never So Alone will charm the fans of fast-paced action thrillers. FBI special Agent Nathan Harris is forced to change his plans after a dangerous assignment goes wrong, compelling him to isolate himself from his superiors and complete the assignment by himself. His relationship back home is already on the rocks and with his suspicion about a mole within the department, Harris’s path has become dangerous than ever.

Finlay does an excellent job of Harris’s dilemma while keeping the pace fast. Developments in Harris’s relationship with his girlfriend are successfully interwoven with the action plot. With the tension of a high-stakes poker game, the story never becomes dull.

Finlay constructs a convincing special operations plot, complete with high action to keep the reader on edge.

I did not enjoy this book. I was really hoping I would as the description sounded promising and the first several pages had me hooked. The plot soon became very choppy. The story rushed in places where it should have taken its time, and slowed in places that seemed unnecessary. For ex., nearly two pages was dedicated to the unprofessional but well-done caulking around a pipe in a wall. Adversely, Nathan's girlfriend breaks up with him in a couple of paragraphs. Readers got a sense this was a possibility but, considering how Nathan claimed to feel about her, it was very abrupt.

Lastly, the dialogue. Oh, the dialogue left so much to be desired. This was probably the biggest disappointment for me because of the amazing job the author does with descriptive text.

Sadly, I was not inspired to explore the series further.

Prequel to Marcia Kane series about Nathan Harris. He is undercover for the FBI in Canada trying to find the boss behind a meth lab hidden in plain sight on a farm. He is suppose to die in an explosion but gets away. He thinks they discovered he was FBI. Interesting how the story develops..

A novella with a good plot, well written and with OK characters. Unfortunately there are several logical errors, but still a good read.

This story introduces Nathan Harris into the mix. Nathan is working undercover in Canada trying to bring down drug dealers. Nathan is believed expendable by yhe dealers when they decided to pull up stakes. Nathan was waiting around to be provided info as to where he was o drop off meth in the U.S. This is not what happened, instead someone tried to kill him with explosives.

He survived that attempt, but he started thinking as to why the drug dealers wanted him dead. The barn where the lab exploded, but Nathan was able to get out. To aid in his investigation, he located a piece of paper which said the delivery was going to Fargo, N.D. He was able to get transportation to Fargo and then began his search for the drug dealer. He located the lab, but once this time he was captured.

To find out how he managed to avoid being killed and who the drug dealer was, then you must read this book. You won't be disappointed.

I loved the way it took you to a place that was so dark you didn’t think it could get any worse…and then off it goes again while circling back round…can’t say anymore without giving it all away so just get it and enjoy it. Brilliant. Would be an amazing film!
Thanks Barry Finlay and thanks Netgalllery..
