Abe has an awful premonition that something will go wrong during a local baking contest. Of course it's his silly imagination; he's just jumpy these days, after that murder last year. But when the day of the competition means running into his abusive ex, who later turns up dead, Abe wishes that he'd paid more attention to his anxieties, not less.
Now it's up to Abe and Gregory to figure out who could have done in the awful man. Because the authorities are looking awfully close to home, and there's only so much strain that even the best relationship can take.
I'm glad we got to see more of Abe and Gregory, and I really liked this book. It filled in a bit of what happened to the characters later, as well as giving in some details on Abe's marriage, and what kind of person his ex was. Plus, we get some more mystery and crime surrounding Abe's life. And we get to meet Edward, whom is a person that kind of piqued me in the previous book but we never got to meet then. I love Abe, as the main character of a cozy mystery. He's not the young, daring, headstrong investigator I'm used to seeing in those. It makes for a more refreshing, but still exciting investigation. I'm only left in the dark about Ollie's relationship, but it's the kind of detail my nosy self will miss, but is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. I overall like this book a lot, and would love to see more mystery books with Abe and Gregory, maybe a bit more of Edward, but I'm not sure Abe's poor nerves could take it.
Murder mystery and mm romance. I liked this one better than the previous book, as I was familiar with the setting and the characters, and the plot seemed more interesting and to move more quickly. We hear a bit less self-doubt from Abe. He also works out some issues with his boyfriend Gregory.
