The Lear Diaries

Rate this book
The Lear Diaries is not only an account of how a group of leading actors approach a major text, it also gives an insight into the pressures placed on today's stars of the theatre. Actor Brian Cox describes the emotional and physical problems which came with playing the all-consuming role of King Lear, while at the same time working as a member of a hardworking ensemble and playing roles in Richard III. Cox's diary also reveals the personal strains of touring, in particular the problems of being separated from his family as the company embarks on a year-long tour.

Not as eloquent as Oliver Ward Davies nor Anthony Sher. This may because much of this diary comes from Cox's transposed talks to his tape recording. Still fascinating behind the scenes look at the truly hard work of acting. Cox is best when he discusses how physically and emotionally demanding it is to take the role of King Lear while also playing Buckingham in Richard III. Definitely wrecked havoc on his emotional and family life.

This was such a disappointing book. Brian Cox is a truly great actor who adds luster to anything he is in. I was expecting his insights into Lear, instead it was a compendium of endless complaints about life on the road.
