Infamous Lords #3.5

The Taming of Lord Scrooge

Rate this book
Some lords prefer scandalous affairs over marriage. But can the magic of Christmas and a second chance at romance open an earl's heart to love?

Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore, isn't in the Christmas spirit. The former 'Naughty Earl' would prefer to focus on maintaining his family's holdings rather than be stuck at his mother's annual Christmas party, with her endless parade of debutantes. When he escapes for a ride, Julien's horse gets spooked and throws him off his saddle, leaving him wandering in the snow. Until he happens upon a cozy cottage...

Evangeline Breckenridge never thought 'Lord Scrooge' would show up at her door. She hasn't seen her childhood sweetheart in years, and Julien's since turned into a tyrant, taking away Christmas traditions from the townspeople. Eve is now a widow and a mother, no longer the foolish girl who believed a nobleman could love a physician's daughter. But the weather outside is frightful, and Eve isn't one to withhold the warmth of her home, even from a cold heart. And as they reconnect, Eve and Julien may even discover there's still something merry and bright burning between them, a fire destined to be reignited—just in time for Christmas...

USA Today bestselling author Renee Ann Miller writes historical romances that are sometimes witty, sometimes dark, but always sexy. She penned her first book at the tender age of seven and even drew the impressive stick figures though clearly those characters weren’t as spicy as the ones she writes now. She has been a finalist in Romance Writers of America's RITA Award® and their Golden Heart Contest®. In her Infamous Lords Series the women are smart and the men notorious.

Renee lives in the Northeast with her husband and during winters is always anxious for spring. She enjoys gardening, DIY projects, and pastries. And though she grew up in a household of hockey fans, she now watches football, which is unavoidable in her house.

The Taming of Lord Scrooge was a fantastic read featuring an amazing second chance romance with a wonderful holiday setting.

The last thing Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore, wants to do is go to his mother’s annual Christmas house party, but not wanting to disappoint his mother, he attends. After being overrun by debutantes, Julien escapes for a ride through the snow only for his horse to throw him and run off. After wandering in the snow, Julien finds a lone cottage and seeks refuge only to discover its’ owner is Evangeline Breckenridge, his childhood sweetheart, and her daughter. Evie never thought she would see Julien again, but she can’t leave him out in the cold, so she welcomes into her home. As Julien and Evie spend time together, they discover there’s still something between them. But will they be able to move beyond the past in time to find love before Christmas?

Evie and Julien fell in love as teenagers, but due to circumstances out of their control they went their separate ways in life. After Julien ends up at Evie’s cottage, those old feelings resurface and they find themselves fighting the attraction they have for one another. I really enjoy second chance romances, so I loved their relationship right away and the playful banter they shared was fantastic. Evie isn’t afraid to call Julien out for his behavior (and neither is her daughter) which Julien finds refreshing as most people are scared of him. When their physical relationship progresses, it’s wonderfully done with some amazing scenes. I thought the ending was well done with an amazing grand gesture that showed how much Julien had changed from being Lord Scrooge.

Overall The Taming of Lord Scrooge was just as enjoyable as the rest of the series and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a holiday historical romance to read.

This was an entertaining read about a second chance love. Evie and Julien, the Earl of Dartmore had been very close friends ten years ago. Now they meet again, when he takes shelter in her house. Their feelings for each other are still there but Evie knows nothing permanent can come of it, as he will need to marry someone from the aristocracy. I loved inquisitive little Mary, Evie’s daughter. Her constant questioning and ideas of justice were so right for someone of her age. This is a lovely story, just right to give you a warm feeling on a cold wintry day.

My review :

When Christmas spirit strikes, can two childhood sweethearts get a second chance?

This is my first read by Mrs Renee Ann Miller, and thanks to her, I had a goofy smile on my face for the major part of this evening. I just adored this holidays treat.
It is no Scrooge redeeming himself story, it is Ebenezer getting a second chance with the woman he loved and lost tale.
This short read was a delight of witticisms, with internal dialogue full of quips, and clever banters.
You add a magnificent specimen of an earl, with a little imp playing matchmaker angel, some sensual times and hot chocolate, and you have the perfect recipe for a wonderful afternoon by the fireplace, a steaming chocolate cup and some gingerbreads:

The very first chapters had me hooked, from the Christmas party attendees to the human boomerang butler, I had a blissful smile during my whole reading of this short tale.
Evie and Julian are two victims of their circumstances, they were too young to fight conventions nor their wise parents councils.
Evie made a life for herself when she left the memories of her first love behind. Never bitter, she embraced her role as a wife and a mother.
Now widowed, it doesn’t change her status far below from an Earl.
Julian when he realized he has lost the one woman he loved, engaged in a life of licentiousness, until his father’s death made him rethink his propensity for aimless pursuits.
So when he comes face to face with the woman he never forgot, will he let her go a second time?

This full of humour and love tale deserves much more than the classical 5 stars rating. It transported me in a snowed cottage with a lizard and a cat readying this home to be the perfect scenery for a Christmas romance.
5 stars

Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore, wants nothing to do with his mother's annual Christmas house party full of by debutantes. When out for a ride, his horse is spooked and he looks for shelter from the winter storm. Evangeline Breckenridge can't believe Julien is on her doorstep. Evie is now a widowed mother, frustrated that Scrooge Julien is taking away all the local traditions...but at one time, the two were childhood sweethearts. A rekindled romance is what neither expected, but both could use, this Christmas.

This is a super cute holiday novella! I like when novellas feature a second chance romance because they are short and it's nice when there is already a history between the characters since there isn't as much time to build the connection. I enjoyed both characters and thought Evie's daughter Mary was adorable, calling Julien "Mr. Earl." It was an easy read and I finished it in one sitting. 4.5 stars rounded to 5.

An absolutely delightful second chance story that takes place during Christmas! I very much enjoyed reading this book and I thought it was well written and I adored the humor throughout.

Julien and Eve haven't seen each other in 10 years and suddenly he's at her doorstep in a dead faint during a snowstorm. Julien is an Earl who is known to be very Scrooge like and Eve is a widowed mother to a precocious 5 year old girl, Mary. While he recovers from being thrown off and dragged by his horse, he and Eve rekindle the attraction that was between them all those years ago. Misunderstandings are cleared up and heartache turns to joy. I have to say, Mary, Eve's daughter, steals the show, I just loved her to bits:)

I was given an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

To say this was a delightful, humorous, enchanting book, just does not do enough justice to this story! I was laughing out loud from the first page as we are introduced to Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore! He was on his third secretary, who was terribly frightened because his last two had met with their demise and he thought he might be next! It was not as if Julien actually killed them or anything...
With the machinations of his mother, she holds a Christmas party inviting all the young debutantes trying to get him married off... So when he gets a chance to escape, he goes out to ride, even though it is snowing and ends up coming off his horse and almost freezes to death. But luckily he sees smoke coming from somewhere close and at the house of his first love, Evie. Of course he had no idea she lived there with her daughter Mary but injured as he was, while getting snowed in, the adventure begins.
I Loved, Loved, Loved this sweet story!! Mary was an impish delight and kept calling him Mr Earl and with Mr Shingles and Pumpernickel, I could not quit smiling. A romantic story that goes down as one of my very favorite Christmas novellas ever. Ok. I will stop gushing now...
Certainly I will be reading this again!!!

The former ‘Naughty Earl’ would prefer to focus on maintaining his family’s holdings rather than be stuck at his mother’s annual Christmas party, with her endless parade of debutantes. When he escapes for a ride, Julien’s horse gets spooked by an owl and throws him, leaving him wandering in the snow. Until he happens upon a cottage & collapses at the door. Evangeline Breckenridge never thought ‘Lord Scrooge’ would show up at her door. She hasn’t seen her childhood sweetheart in a decade. Evie is now a widow and a mother, no longer the foolish girl who believed a nobleman could love a physician’s daughter.
A lovely second chance novella, which I read in a sitting. Strong characters & a well paced story held my interest all the way through. Mary of course stole the book & she ended up be an unwitting matchmaker. There was plenty of humour as well as an attraction that sizzled whilst they were marooned in a snowstorm.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. The Taming of Lord Scrooge by Renee Ann Miller is a Christmas Novella in her The Infamous Lords series. The story is a delightful tale of young lovers who meet again 10 years later when Julien Caruthers, Earl of Dartmore falls off his horse and takes refuge from a storm at the home of Evangeline Breckenridge now widowed and the doctor’s daughter his family felt was not a suitable bride for him. Delightfully humorous and full of the joys of the season I enjoyed this story very much and do recommend reading it as well as the other books in the series. Medium Steam. Oh what a super cute holiday novella! This book had a lot of things that I normally don't like in a book:
Number one, being a novella, but I did not feel that it was too short, I felt the story was told in the perfect amount of pages, which is hard to do I think.
Number two, second chance love story, normally I dislike this trope but because of the shortened amount of pages, it didn't give a lot of time for the overdone dramatics to take places. The drama was handled perfectly so as to not be annoying to the reader, and the romance was done tactfully and the right amount of steam.
No feeling of insta-lust as a turn off, the child was adorable as a side character, the hro wasn't really all that Scroogey, but that's ok.
(and the cover is misleading... they are never dressed that way during the whole book. It was a snowed-in cabin setting)

The Taming of Lord Scrooge by Renee Ann Miller is book 3.5 in the Infamous Lords Series. This is the story of Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore and Evangeline Breckenridge. I have read the previous books but feel you can make this a standalone book. Julien has to attend his mother's ball but after to many debutantes try to catch his eye he ends up leaving the party. Then he has a accident that leads him to meet his childhood sweetheart. Evangeline is a widower now and a mother when she ends up helping the Julien that leads to rekindling their feelings. This was a Scrooge type main character of Julien who just maybe getting his happy ending.

An enchanting story. Unhappy Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore, is stuck at his house party, hosted by his mother. Evangeline Breckenridge, who has dubbed Julien as "Lord Scrooge", finds herself the unwanted host to an injured Earl. Evie's daughter, Mary, is definitely one of the most lovable characters you will ever meet. Although a novella, story was well timed and complete. If you only read one Christmas story this year, this should be the one. Highly recommend.

This book is a quick enjoyable read. The main characters Julien (the Earl of Dartmore) and Evangeline (a commoner) where childhood friends with some benefits. Julien’s father made Julien promise to wait several years before deciding to wed and to have no contract with Evangeline during this time. Julien did as his father asked, only to find out that in the meantime Evangeline married another. Ten years later Julien is at his country estate for a Christmas party given by his mother. She has invited a large number of young unmarried debutants. She has told him he needs an heir before it is too late. Feeling set upon he has his horse saddled and leaves the party for a quick ride. Unfortunately he is thrown from his horse during a cold wintery snowstorm. After miles of walking in the harsh weather he finds himself at the door of a small isolated cottage. Fate has a funny why for making second chances. The door Julien finds himself is Evangeline’s only he doesn’t know it as yet. Evangeline is now a widow with a small child. She recognizes Julien, her first love and decides to nurse him back to health. When Julien regains consciousness he is surprised to find Evangeline. As the storm continues to brew, Julien and Evangeline relationship is rekindled. Life will never be the same for Julien, Evangeline and her daughter.

There was nothing wrong with this novel exactly. It was really a matter of it being just too short. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy novellas from time to time, but throughout this novel things just didn't add up for me. I couldn't really get into these characters or the relationship they once shared. Perhaps if we had gotten more of a prologue that showed that aspect things would have felt more connected. Or even just a few more pages of them together when they were stranded. Something that didn't feel like we were being rushed through the story.

I did enjoy Evie's outspokenness, as well as her daughter's open curiosity. It was easy to see where these two people would make a good match with one another, but again, everything felt so rushed that I don't feel like they got a chance to have their story be heard. As good as the writing was, and as heartfelt as the story ended up, I don't feel like this is one I will easily remember a few weeks from now.

However, this novella is good for a rainy (or snowy day), and I firmly believe that fans of historical romance will enjoy this story. I would read more from this author!

I enjoyed this quick historical 2nd Chances Christmas novella. I have not read other books in this series (or by this author) and followed the story without any difficulty. Therefore, this novella works fine as a stand-alone book. There are 3 prior books & a later one readers may wish to check out as well, if they enjoy The Taming of Lord Scrooge.

The Taming of Lord Scrooge has a young child in it which can make the reading “iffy” for me. I don’t care for precocious or “adorably sweet” children. I had no issues with that here. I was pulled into the story quickly, it read fast, and I caught myself hoping Lord Julian (Earl of Dartmoor)/MMC wasn’t going to get Evangeline’s/FMC hopes up and then leave, never to be seen again. I don’t personally need epilogues, but the one in this story was fitting.

I recommend The Taming of Lord Scrooge to readers looking for a quick holiday (or not) read, and/or a lite historical book free of angst and drama. The Taming of Lord Scrooge has a couple scenes of sexual intimacy between the main characters towards the end of the novella. I found the sexuality level somewhere between sweet and steamy (3 of 5), not appropriate for YA readers. Profanity was used several times & pointed out as being “inappropriate” by the child.

Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore, otherwise known in scandal sheets as the "Naughty Earl" would prefer to focus on managing his holdings and settling into the new role of Earl since his father's death. He'd certainly rather avoid his mother's matchmaking machinations at her annual Christmas house party. When Julien sneaks out for a ride, only to be thrown by his spooked horse, he finds himself several miles from his house. Left wandering in the rapidly falling snow, Julien begs shelter at a cottage he stumbles upon.

Evangeline Breckenridge certainly didn't expect her adolescent love to show up at her front door. She hasn't seen him in ten years but she can't leave him to freeze, even if he has ruined several of the village's Christmas traditions. Now widowed and mother to a young daughter, Eve is a different person than she was when she believed Julien would offer for her. But snowed in together, sparks fly once again between Eve and Julien and their future may be quite bright after all.

This was a cute, quick second chance story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to more of this author's work.

This was a new to me author that I'm so happy that I took a chance on. I found this novella read very enjoyable. Delivering a entertaining combination of emotion, romance, drama, humor and a bit of heat, Eve and Julien's story swept me up in a flurry of feels, chuckles and even a couple of aww moments. The storyline is a touch cute and has plenty of holiday charm and sweetness. Honestly, I would have loved to spend more time with these characters and delve deeper their story but that just wasn't meant to be due to the length of this book. This read is part of a series and there was a time or two when I felt that I was a bit out of the know because I have not read any of the other books. But it wasn't enough to truly impact my enjoyment of this read. I really liked the main characters and the book had a good selection of secondary characters that were not only appealing but I feel offer future book opportunities. I would love to read books for each of Julien's sisters or even Eve's daughter Mary, once she grows up. I will definitely be checking out other books from this author. This is my candid, volitional review.

Evangeline Breckenridge never thought she'd see her childhood crush, Julien Caruthers, now the Earl of Dartmore ever again. She thought she was in love back then, but was devastated when Julien went off to school and never contacted her again. Now years later, she's a widow with a child and she is shocked when a half frozen Julien shows up on her doorstep. She has no choice but to take him in and nurse him back to health. Julien's nickname is Lord Scrooge because he has taken away all the Christmas activities previous Earls used to sponsor. Can Evangeline change his mind about Christmas and will Julien be able to open his heart to love?

This was a cute short read. Ms. Miller has a knack for bringing out the best in her characters. I loved Evangeline and Julien, but it's Evangeline's daughter, Mary, who stole the show in every scene she's in. If you're looking for a feel good Christmas story, this one fits the bill nicely.

Julien's mother has thrown a house party for Christmas. She wants to see him married, but there is only one person that has ever tempted Julien to marry and she is married to someone else. Trying to get away from all the debutants, Julien goes for an early morning ride. Unfortunately, his horse gets spooked and he is thrown. Lucky for him, he sees a cottage not far away and manages to get there before he passes out.

Evangeline can't believe that her former beau has landed on her doorstep. Julien broke her heart years ago and she doesn't want to be hurt again. But they are stranded in her cottage for the time being and getting to know Julien allows her to see that he isn't really the man that she has read about in the gossip columns.

Can this couple find their way back to one another?

I loved Julien and Evangeline's story. It was a pretty quick read, but had me enthralled throughout (I even kept reading while making dinner, LOL!). I always love reunion stories and Miller did a great job with this one. This was a great addition to the Infamous Lords series!

The Taming of Lord Scrooge by Renee Ann Miller is a novella about refinding a lost love. Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore has been forced to “Christmas” with his family and every debutante from the season this year. He is horrified, but knows he has to stick it out, but he can at least go for a horse ride. Too bad he didn’t plan on what happened while riding. When he comes to, he realizes that he is not at home and in the home of one tenant.

Evangeline Breckenridge is horrified when she realizes that the man that passed out on her doorstep was Julien Caruthers, her sweetheart from the past. He disappeared and she married another, had a child and was widowed. To top it all off, she has been writing him scathing letters about how much he has taken away from his tenants.

Who knows what will happen with Julien Caruthers and Evangeline Breckenridge snowed in for a few days before Christmas. The Taming of Lord Scrooge by Renee Ann Miller is a hot, fun, Christmas Novella.

This is the second holiday romance I've read this season. I really enjoyed this one too! The two characters, Julien and Evangeline, planned to get married when they were younger, but Julien acted a little stupid (forgivably so, it was an honest misunderstanding to the most part), and Evangeline ended up married to someone else. Now it's something like ten years later, and Evangeline is a widow with a daughter. Julien ends up stranded at her house right before Christmas, and she assists him while a snow storm is outside. The two of them fall back in love with each other, and Julien also comes to love her daughter. I thought the novella was really sweet, and I'd love to see a follow-up with the characters in later novels.

This a sweet second chance novella, I read it in one sitting. While our two main characters are enjoyable, it was Mary, Evangaline's daughter, who was the standout character, she was adorable and funny.

Like all novellas, it's difficult to tell a full story in a short amount of time, and while this book didn't feel rushed I would have liked to see how Evangeline and Julien first fell in love, a prologue or a few flashbacks would have completed this book. It was a case of telling not showing that they were in love before.

If you're looking for something quick and heartwarming to read this Christmas season, then this is a book for you.

I am not a great fan or novellas and I'm not that into Christmas stories, but I really enjoyed The Taming of Lord Scrooge. Julien Caruthers, the Earl of Dartmore, is disgusted with being pursued by marriageable ladies and his mother's matchmaking ways. Taking a ride to escape a Christmas house party, he ends up collapsing in the snow at a cottage. Of course, the cottage belongs to Evangeline Breckenridge. She is a widow, living with her daughter and housekeeper. Julien and Eve were childhood sweethearts. They become reacquainted each other and reignite their love.

The story is not terribly original, but is done very well. Eve's daughter adds a charming touch. I've become a great fan of Renee Ann Miller.

This is a very enjoyable book about when you realize you let something good in your life go, you do not let it go again. Evie and Julien were in love when they were teens, but they were not equal in status. Years later they meet again, when he is an Earl and she is a Widow. I enjoyed their chemistry and interaction. I really liked little Mary. This is the first book I have ever read by Renee Ann Miller, and I enjoyed this book so much, I am going to add this author to my want to read list. It might be the first book by her, but it will not be the last. That is how much I have enjoyed her writing style.

A sweet second chance romance you can read on a lazy afternoon and feel smiley about. Julien, the Earl, was Evie's childhood sweetheart but he left and well, they both moved on. Now, she's a widow with a small daughter named Mary. When he's thrown from his horse on a snowy day, he finds the closest house is.....Evie's! She takes him in and, over the course of the novella, they find that there's still a spark. There's nice dialogue between this well matched pair. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I'd not read any of the books in the series and this was perfectly fine as a standalone.

The Taming of Lord Scrooge is a delightful, charming and quite sexy holiday novella that plays around the Scrooge theme as well as second chance at love. Julian and Eve were each other’s first love but circumstances had them separated for a decade. This was really a marvelous read, the characters were fully fleshed out despite the length of the book and the plot was simple but a lot was tackled regarding Eve and Julian’s past and the present. It’s perfect for the holidays as well since it also plays on the forced proximity plot!
