I'm not really sure how to rate this book so I settled for a middle of the road rating because for me the story was split 50/50 between the pros and the cons. And seriously, maybe there's spoilers below but at the same time, it's historical romance so in general, you shouldn't be surprised...
First the pros:
I thought for the most the H was well drawn. Usually rakes, libertines or simply promiscuous men are written as being quite the suave seducer. I felt that he wasn't and I appreciated that. I liked that when he tries to basically reach into her bodice it wasn't easy. Usually, in stories, the H simply pulls down the h's bodice and touches them. In this case, not so smooth. It was awkward and unsuccessful and you know, in honesty, it most often is in real life. So I appreciated that it didn't work out quite smooth for the H. And it was enough to make me slightly embarrassed for him but also thinking yeah, I get it man.
Also, I liked the way the author treated how people snubbed him. He was so isolated from his peers. He wasn't invited to their parties, their homes, and when he bows to them or doffs his hat in respect to those he passes in the street, he is ignored and/or spoken about. I liked that despite that, he continued to show manners and not react in a rude or insulting manner.
I liked that he felt real emotions like when he offers his arm to the h to escort her into the room and he is vividly aware that people are watching. And he starts to feel anxiety and embarrassment that she is going to humiliate him in front of others by refusing. I mean, bravo right? Because ANYONE would feel that and I like that he was made to be this kinda ordinary guy who has made a bit of shamble of his life and is reaping the rewards. And when he starts to pull himself together and starts to feel some self respect and pride in his accomplishments it was such a naked human emotion that yeah, ok. I felt for him.
Now the cons.
Honestly, the h. I am not sure if I can even explain how nonsensical she was. I get that she was young and naive. But it's explained about how she loved him from when she first saw him. That's not love. Not even remotely. And when she sees him in the garden and he approaches her, I'll say right now that it was NOT rape or coercion in any sense of the word. He approached, she responded, she at no time voiced any objection and despite the fact that he was roaring drunk, he was somewhat mindful that she wasn't resisting, etc. He was following her cues in short. I almost wanted laugh after what must have been a 2 minute quickie when she is shocked that he is going just walk away. That he didn't declare himself or "do the right thing." WTF?
And because of that she is going to plot her revenge. And what's more she still loves and wants him and I laughed because all I could think was that was the most uninspired 2 minute quickie with a drunk stranger (because let's face it that was who they were to each other) especially for a first time that I can't imagine anyone would long for that again. She's no different than any other girl who lost her virginity to a jerk (though in all honesty, he was not hiding who or what he was which in my book is at least a point in his favor...most jerks hide that they're jerks until it's too late for you to find out).
Finally, after that he dreams of finding that "golden goddess" that he met in that garden and remembered her from the scent of her perfume. Bwa ha ha haaa! You mean to tell me, that this guy who beds anything with a skirt and has done so for years, is finally brought to heel by memories of some "goddess." The same goddess that he saw earlier that evening and thought her the most insipid girl ever. Do you know why? Because she was an insipid girl and there was no reason for him to notice her. But it's amazing how many, MANY glasses of alcohol later people start to look pretty good. And suddenly this insipid girl see while sober becomes a golden goddess when completely foxed. And he can't stop thinking of her after basically a quickie with a virgin who just lay there. Bwa ha ha haaa! Seriously, I can't stop smirking each time I think of it. Though I will insert a SMALL pro here in that he made it a habit to smell his current flavor of the minute to see if he could find that woman again (and I'd like to point out that all he could remember of the encounter was the smell of her perfume!). Anyway, the pro is that even after he was established with the h, he had found himself sniffing the neck of another woman on instinct. I don't know why but I thought that was a nice touch because people don't change their habits overnight.
Oh, last con is that he was clearly an alcoholic. Alcoholics can't moderate their drinking. And withdrawals are beastly. If anyone has ever been around an alcoholic, it's freakin' draining. The mood changes, etc. I was surprised that knowing he was an alcholic (a not recovered alcoholic as far as I could tell) that she would still proceed with the relationship because seriously. Alcoholics have to be truly committed to detox and abstinence to succeed. End of sermon.
