Der Besucher
Roman Briggs hat acht Tage zu leben.

Simply enjoyable!
This is quite a different story line when compared to other science fiction scenarios. It is like a breath of fresh air from the stale BangBang shootem up, being chased across the cosmos, human/alien struggles that we normally see. I found a this to be an excellent story line that maintained my interest thought. Great character development with pulse raising moments. I highly recommend and will be on the lookout for further works of this author.

Brilliantly clever. Loved the pacing of the book and Briggs and Steward were wonderful. I didn't want it to end.

I found that the cover is what drew me in, as well as the subject matter-a mystery set in space, and a story of survival. I LOVE survival stories, and I also love a good mystery. Therefore, I felt I would surely love this.
Fast forward three months later and I still hadn’t read it.
I finally picked it up, and read it on my phone and was astonished at finishing it nearly three and a half hours later. It was a quick, fun read with suspenseful moments, and dire situations. While the mystery itself wrapped up neatly, the survival bit felt a little too quick, despite the long periods of the main character, Briggs, being trapped outside an alien spaceship that was tugging him towards his own kind.
The writing was excellent, and Briggs was a character that I empthasized with. He was in a terrible situation, but making the best of it. He had no other humans around, and the species that rescued him-Manti-weren’t very talkative. Being stranded, in the middle of nowhere, with limited supplies…while it read fine, I definitely wouldn’t want to be in that kind of situation.
The only bit that made me wince in the book was when he took off his helmet to stuff food into his mouth. The aliens didn’t share the same kind of oxygen, and it was extremely cold to the point of instant death if he stepped onboard. I found the aliens fascinating, and really want to know more about them. The Manti are bug like creatures, that are intelligent and strange.
Briggs finds a friend in one of them, Steward One, who helps keep him company and keeps him from going insane, alone out in the universe for days on end with almost no one to talk to. The two of them become fast friends, and its while they’re on their way hauling Briggs to his people, that Briggs sees something he shouldn’t…and reports it to Steward.
Their laws are different from humans, and their chain of command is essentially the same, but also vastly different at the same time. While they have Captain and Stewards, they don’t follow the same set of commands that our race do. It was all very interesting in reading.
By the end of the book, it became a happy ending resulting in a new friendship, and Briggs turning into a hero, even as he managed to get back to safety, thanks to the Manti and their assistance. It was a fun ride, and I enjoyed every second of it. I hope that there will be a book two, to see if Briggs will come back to the Manti or explain more of the universe that Briggs is in, for there definitely seems to have left a lot to explore in this universe.
Overall, I rate this a 5/5 stars for a fun few hours.

Holy Crap! This is one outstanding book! You need to get this story and read it now! Gripping, edge of your seat excitement; outstanding descriptions, so believable and so real that it will leave you breathless and you'll completely become absorbed in this story from start to finish! I can't say enough good things about this young emerging author except that we need more like him.
Do yourself a favor: Go get A Walk Between Stars now and read it. You'll be glad you did. Tyler Parsons did a fantastic job on his first publication. I've already followed him and I'm jonesing for more already.
This guy can setup situations that are so well described and so believable that you feel like you are there.
As any of you who follow me know, I'm a very hard man to impress, so when an emerging author gets a 5 star rating and a couple of killer reviews from me, you'd best pay attention!

Well written and easy to read. I liked that the book was telling two different stories at the same time.

This is a great read!
I loved reading this novella. I found it well written, without grammer, spelling or punctuation errors, a big plus in my opinion. The story grabbed my interest from the very beginning and did not let go till the very end. I understand this is a first book for Mr. Parsons which makes it even more impressive. I look forward to reading much more from him!

Hab mich sehr gut unterhalten gefühlt, rundum tolles Leseerlebnis. Würde gerne noch mehr über die Spezies und deren Lebensweise erfahren. Schade, dass es so kurz ist.

Nachdem mich das Buch anfangs nicht so begeistern konnte, kam ich doch schnell an den Punkt, an dem ich das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen konnte.
Ich wollte unbedingt mehr über die Manti wissen und erfahren was sich an ihrem Raumschiff abspielt und ich habe Briggs und Steward schnell in mein Herz geschlossen.
Wer gerne mal einen Ausflug ins All machen möchte und eine Geschichte lesen möchte, die spannend aber nicht zu gruselig ist, für den ist das Buch genau richtig.
Ps: Das Cover ist auch richtig gut gelungen.

Nach der Zerstörung seines Raumschiffs, schwebt Roman Briggs hilflos durchs all. Glücklicherweise wird sein Notruf von einem Schiff der Manti, einer insektenartigen Aliengattung, gehört. An Bord kann er nicht kommen, aber er darf an der Außenseite des Schiffs andocken, wo er von nun an mit den notwendigsten Dingen versorgt wird und seine Zeit mit dem Beobachten seiner Retter zubringt. Als er Zeuge eines Verbrechens wird, steht er allerdings vor einer für sich schwerwiegenden Entscheidung.
Obwohl "Der Besucher" nur knapp 200 Seiten umfasst, schafft es TYler R. Parsons eine irrsinnige Spannung aufzubauen. Man fiebert bei Briggs' scheinbar aussichtslosem Überlebenskampf mit, beobachtet durch seine Augen die Manti und hofft, dass der Verbrecher an Bord überführt wird, bevor er noch mehr Schaden anrichten kann als ohnehin schon.
Mir gefällt, dass dieser Roman nicht mit technischen Details und Fachjargon überladen ist, man der Handlung als Laie beziehungsweise Neueinsteiger ins Genre also problemlos folgen kann.
"Der Besucher" ist dank des geringen Umfangs und der tollen Geschichte eine perfekte Lektüre für Zwischendurch und sowohl für Fans von Science Fiction als auch Kriminalromanen lesenswert.

Also ich hab nicht viel erwartet, weil ich das Buch bei einer Aktion gekauft habe wo man drei Bücher für neun Euro bekam. An sich hatte die Geschichte viel Potential, die ganze Sache mit Mensch wird von Aliens gerettet, aber es wurde meiner Meinung nach schlecht Umgesetzt und gute Möglichkeiten wurden verschwendet. Der Schreibstil war okay aber nicht besonders.

Ich fand den Anfang schon sehr seltsam und nicht zufriedenstellend, vor allem weil nie aufgeklärt wurde, warum das Schiff zerstört wurde. Dann habe ich die Reaktionen der zwei Menschen als überhaupt nicht realistisch empfunden. Ich denke, dass niemand sein Schiff explodieren sieht und denkt „Tja, das ist ein bisschen doof gelaufen.“ Die Emotionen wurden eigentlich nie beschrieben, dafür aber zu detailliert seine Tagesabläufe. Die Nebengeschichte mit der, die immer putzt, zum Beispiel hatte keine Relevanz für die Geschichte an sich. Das Buch war schon nicht sehr lang und es hätte noch kürzer werden können.. Ich finde es auch negativ überraschend als aus einem (potentiell) reflektieren Thema des Zusammentreffen zweier Spezies plötzlich ein nicht tiefgründiges, überhaupt nicht spannungreiches und durchschaubares murder mystery wird. Das hat mich enttäuscht, dass dann alles fast reibungslos nach Plan lief und mit der Kraft der Freundschaft gewonnen wurde war ja vorhersehbar. Was ich auch nicht verstanden habe ist warum die Aliens Shakespeare und weitere Aspekte über die menschliche Art und Kultur kannten, aber der Mensch fast gar nichts über sie. Wie sind die Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Aliens? Woher kommen sie? Wie lange besteht Kontakt? All das wurde nicht beantwortet. Vielleicht bin ich ein bisschen hart, es hat mir schon auf irgendeine Art und Weise spaß gemacht, den Roman zu lesen, aber ich finde, dass es da noch viel Raum gegeben hat.

So, I didn't have high expectations for this book since I bought it in a special sale where I could get three books for nine Euros. Overall, the story held great potential, with the aliens providing shelter for the human and so on. However, in my opinion this potential was wasted and not nearly fulfilled. The writing style was okay but not special in any way, some may not like it at all I assume.

I found the beginning of the book strange and really not satisfying, especially because the reader never will know why the human ship exploded. The react ons of the humans weren't realistic at all. I believe noone sees their ship explod which probably means their own death and goes "oh, well, this kinda sucks. I guess." . The emotions were never really described, but his daily routines were described in too much detail. The side story with the one who always cleans, for example, had no relevance to the story itself. The book was already not very long and it could have been even shorter.... I also find it negatively surprising when a (potentially) reflective theme of two species meeting suddenly becomes a non-deep, not at all suspenseful but transparent murder mystery. That disappointed me, that then everything went almost smoothly according to plan and was won with the power of friendship was predictable. What I also didn't understand is why the aliens knew Shakespeare and other aspects about human kind and culture, but humans knew almost nothing about them. What are the relations between humans and aliens? Where do they come from? How long has there been contact? All this was not answered. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, I did enjoy reading the novel in some way, but I think there was a lot of potential.

Die Prämisse dieses Buches klang sehr spannend. Ein Mensch allein im All, Kontakt mit Aliens, dazu ein Murder Mystery.
In der Ausführung war es leider weniger spannend. Das Murder Mystery beginnt erst nach der Hälfte des Buches und es ist sehr klar, was passiert ist. Es gibt hier keine großen Überlegungen oder Twists, die es spannender werden lassen hätten.
Der Kontakt des Protagonisten mit der Alien-Spezies der Manti ist schön zu lesen, wie der Protagonist ihre Eigenarten kennenlernt und Freundschaften entwickelt. Die Unterschiede in der Kommunikation waren zu Anfang interessant zu lesen, wurden aber nach einer Weile langweilig.
Insgesamt liest sich das Buch sehr schnell und flüssig, ich war weniger als 3 Stunden damit beschäftigt. Teilweise war mir aber beim Lesen etwas langweilig, wenn zum gefühlt tausendsten Mal beschrieben wird, wie der Protagonist seine Spaziergänge über die Oberfläche des Raumschiffes der Manti macht.
Wenn man seine Erwartungen ändert und keine packende Detektiv- und Survival-Geschichte erwartet (wie der Klappentext erwarten lässt), sondern eine Art "Slice Of Life" Geschichte der Beobachtung einer fremden Spezies mit Survival- und Detektiv-Elementen, oder einfach ein Buch für zwischendurch, ist diese Geschichte durchaus unterhaltsam.

The premise of this book sounded very exciting, one human alone in space, getting to know aliens, plus a murder mystery.
In practice, it wasn't that exciting. The murder mystery starts only in the second half of the book, and it is rather straight-forward without any twists and turns or the protagonist really having to think.
It was nice to read about the protagonists relationship with the Manti (the alien species), and him learning about the species and making some friends. At first, it was interesting to read about how they communicate, but it got boring after a while.
All in all, the book reads very fluently and quickly, I was done after less than 3 hours. During reading I was bored during some parts, especially when the author described the protagonist's walks over the space ship's surface over and over.
If you adjust your expectations from expecting an exciting survival story and murder mystery (which is what the blurb suggests), and rather expect a more slice-of-life story of observing an alien species with some survival and murder mystery elements, this can very much be enjoyable. Also, I think it can be nice as a quick read on the side.

In practice, it wasn't that exciting. The murder mystery starts only in the second half of the book, and it is rather straight-forward without any twists and turns or the protagonist really having to think.
It was nice to read about the protagonists relationship with the Manti (the alien species), and him learning about the species and making some friends. At first, it was interesting to read about how they communicate, but it got boring after a while.
All in all, the book reads very fluently and quickly, I was done after less than 3 hours. During reading I was bored during some parts, especially when the author described the protagonist's walks over the space ship's surface over and over.
If you adjust your expectations from expecting an exciting survival story and murder mystery (which is what the blurb suggests), and rather expect a more slice-of-life story of observing an alien species with some survival and murder mystery elements, this can very much be enjoyable. Also, I think it can be nice as a quick read on the side.

Überlebenshilfe und gelegentliche Gespräche mit einem Manti halten ihn am Leben, doch um der Langeweile zu entgehen, beobachtet er das Leben im Schiff.
Der Roman ist die Erweiterung einer Kurzgeschichte und für seinen Umfang schon ein wenig teuer.
Die Geschichte dahinter ist aber ein kleines Juwel, wenn man nicht nach einem Krimi sucht. Wer welche Tat begangen hat, ist dem Leser eher früher als dem Astronauten klar, doch er als Angehöriger einer fremden Rasse darf nicht gehört werden.
Faszinierend ist, wie sich der langeweilegeplagte Astronaut immer mehr in die Personen und den Alltag der Manti hineindenkt, wie er durch Fragen rätselhafte Handlungen zu verstehen lernt und wie er nach und nach Personen unterscheidet und auch erkennbar beschreiben kann.
Die eigentliche Tat ist nicht ruchbar zu machen, doch der Besitz eines verbotenen Gegenstandes kann entscheidend sein. Der Kampf auf dem Raumschiff wirkt ein wenig aufgesetzt und ich hätte gern noch mehr über die Kultur der Manti erfahren.
Für mich gelungene Unterhaltung.

Wow, what a ride!
The spirit and bounce of this book caught me quite by surprise. I LOVE finds like this.
The story catapults into action on page one. After his ship explodes, Roman Briggs finds himself alone and stranded in space until he is rescued by a ship of bug-like Manti. Because of different metabolic needs, he is forced to remain outside the hull until they can rendezvous with other humans. Briggs cheerfully adapts and makes friends with one of his caretakers, but when he witnesses an act of violence through one of the portholes, he is sucked into a tense drama with the alien Manti.
If I find myself smiling unconsciously while reading, I know I've found a jewel. Not only does this story get a gold star for originality, it was exceedingly well executed, a pleasure to read. The twists of the plot move at a good pace, the characters are funny and likeable, and the alien culture is fascinating. Scifi thriller? Yes, but ultimately it is a touching story of honor and friendship.
Sadly, this seems to be the only publication available from this author. Based on the superb quality of this novella, I would love to see more from him in the future!

This leans towards a slow burn horror with a distinct alien race and a murder mystery thrown in. Parsons uses strong, descriptive language throughout that really draws the reader in. A bit visceral at times where you almost wish the descriptions weren't quite so apt. It is somehow both thrilling and slow paced at the same time as the seconds count inexorably down to the end of Roman's meager supplies and therefore his life adding up to long hours of little to do but wait and watch, punctuated by acute emergencies and occasional hope.
The watching is what gets him in trouble and further complicates the situation. It also serves to expose more of the alien culture and adds depth to the story. The psychology and anthropology is much stronger than the science in this one. This is a standalone, but there is a lot of potential in this universe for many more stories and I hope we see more from Parsons.

Ein Buch das einen nicht vom Haken lässt. Interessante Idee, clevere Umsetzung, leichte Science Fiction, sehr kurzweilig - aber auch sehr kurz. Das Ende war mir eine Spur zu abrupt, ich hätte (wahrscheinlich wegen des sympathischen Charakters) gerne noch gelesen, wie die [SPOILER]
'Überstellung' in das Erdenschiff vonstatten ging und wie Tech 4 zu den Vorfällen reflektiert. Das Buch hätte ein abschließendes Kapitel noch gut vertragen.
Aber dennoch, Alles in Allem: Ein klare Empfehlung, ein gutes Buch für Zwischendurch.

Loved the concept!
This book was a great read. I think the author did a good job providing imagery that made you feel you were experiencing everything alongside the main character. The concept of the book was futuristic and interesting. I’d like to see more books like this from the author.

Kurze, aber überzeugende Sci-Fi Geschichte mit einem liebenswerten Helden und faszinierenden Außerirdischen mit einer interessanten Kultur. Die Story bietet Spannung, Abenteuer und gute Unterhaltung. Von mir aus hätte die Story gerne noch etwas länger sein können, aber auch so habe ich mich gut unterhalten gefühlt und für so wenig Seiten passiert ziemlich viel.

Ich verteile 4 Sterne da ich das Buch nicht weglegen konnte. Das spricht sehr für die Story die tatsächlich ziemlich außergewöhnlich ist.
Obwohl eigentlich nicht viel passiert und der Showdown auch sehr spät und kurz beschrieben ist, so bleibt man immer neugierig genug um weiterzulesen.
Alles in allem hat mich das Buch positiv überrascht vor allem das es anscheinend das Erstwerk des Autors ist.

Ein Stern Abzug, weil die Geschichte da schon aufhört, wo sie aufhört. Ich hätte gern noch so viel mehr Kommunikation, auch der beiden Regierungen gehabt. Und gewusst, wie es zur Ausgangssituation kam.
Aber ansonsten eine tolle Geschichte, die man gut in wenigen Stunden und völlig entspannt durchlesen kann.

A nice longish short story or novella. Unusual situation. Interesting inter-specie interaction. Would read more from this author. Not much 'action', more the pacing of a murder mystery - which is not necessarily a bad thing!

Mal etwas überraschend anderes aus dem Bereich der Science-Fiction.
Ein sehr kurzweiliges, nettes Buch, was man gut in einem Rutsch durchlesen kann.
Jedoch nichts, was einem sehr lange im Kopf bleiben wird, für die Unterhaltung für Zwischendurch aber durchaus taugt.
