Dan Kotler #7

The God Extinction

Rate this book
WHAT IF THE GODS WERE REAL?
That’s the question Dr. Dan Kotler—Archaeologist and FBI Consultant—finds himself struggling to answer after a Druidic tomb is unearthed in the mountains of Egypt.

Why did the Druids build a site in Egypt, thousands of years ago?

And what implications does this site have for human history?

Kotler’s not the only one looking for answers.

The Alihat Iadida—the New Gods—is a powerful cult that wants control of the site, and of the bronze sword that Kotler himself helped to discover, twenty years earlier. That sword could be the key to unlocking the Otherworld—the realm of the gods, and a source of world-dominating power.

Dr. Kotler and Agent Roland Denzel once again find themselves facing threats and dangers, fighting for their lives in the mountains of Egypt.

And this time, they may face the gods themselves.

Picking up where his novella, “The Brass Hall,” left off, Kevin Tumlinson takes readers on another thrilling ride through misplaced history, with stakes that could change the world.

THE GOD EXTINCTION IS THE SEVENTH NOVEL IN KEVIN TUMLINSON’S DAN KOTLER ARCHAEOLOGICAL THRILLERS.

At the moment, Kevin—along with his wife and his dog—are traveling full-time in an RV, exploring the US as Kevin writes and promotes his books. The inside joke is that they are going on the worlds most far-ranging house hunt. They're only half joking.

Full confession: I have not read The Brass Hall that this book is a continuation of. I feel better getting that off my chest. I tell you that so you will know that this book is another fun adventure in the Dan Kotler series that can be read as a continuation of The Brass Hall or on its own merits. You won't feel like you've missed out on anything if you're reading this book as your first in the Kotler series.

I love the Dan Kotler stories. They definitely have an Indiana Jones vibe to them and I love the way Kotler and Agent Roland work together. At this point, they've been in enough crazy situations to know how the other one thinks and works and it was evident in this story. It's also great to see how secondary characters interact with them such as Dr. Liz Ludlum helping them out when Dan and Roland get stuck in a sticky situation. The New Gods were a great new villain element. I tend to like stories with an evil, shadowy organization in the background pulling strings and the New Gods didn't disappoint in that regard.

Kevin Tumlinson does a great job, as usual, with advancing the characters and showing growth. Each book feels like a natural progression from where the characters were in the previous book and I'm excited to find out where the new little mysteries that were introduced in this book are going to lead in the near future.

All in all, this is another great addition to the Dan Kotler series. It's an easy read and doesn't take long, but is definitely a fun adventure.

Move into a world that shake your beliefs

For years, Indiana Jones, Stewart Granger, and now even Dan Kotler have convinced us that centuries ago there lived a breed of humans clever enough to recognize a certain object placed in a certain position could cause something unusual to happen. Like certain sword pushed just so into a hole in a rock would cause another rock a great distance away to move, allowing sunlight to shine in a certain way to cause a map to appear. I have no problem believing it could be so. While being an engineer, I happen to also be an organist, one quite familiar with the workings of the mechanical action pipe organ. An action so similar to the push of the sword instead causes air to move into a pipe to produce a sound. So I am a believer. Yet I don't know if in the real world we have evidence that there really were such crafty people who really did build those engineering marvels way back then. So Dr. Kotler is making me want to jump feet first into the world of archeology to see what finds have happened in the real world that I have missed.

The first third of the novel and then scattered in later chapters on matters regarding 'cultural anthropology' are the most interesting aspects of this well researched book for the disconcerting reader. The main characters presentation at a TED conference on the common links of ancient cultures separated by time and geography is most enlightening as is the notion that no religion was created from whole cloth but borrowed from those spiritual practices that came before it. Such theories are worthy of inspection and reflection. However the fictional story itself and the proposed discovery of a 'door' to a mysterious underworld in the mountains of Egypt and laced with bits of action scenes is left open and in the end really takes the reader nowhere. The idea that artifacts reflecting the known religions of the world from the beginning of time residing in one cave is a bit of a stretch even for the reader that is into spiritual conspiracies.

Another Dan Kotler adventure, but different from the others. Dan begins with a TED talk that focuses on the shared ideas within the religious views of a number of cultures. He is pulled from the stage to face a request for his help at a dig in Egypt he had previously worked on. His old assistant ion that dig is now a PhD and the director of Egyptian Antiquities. Dan is joined by Denzel in his trip to Egypt where he faces betrayal and danger from a cult. Treachery abounds as Dan is kidnapped and held for ransom in the form of a bronze sword thought to be the key to the world of the gods. The characters are well-defined and the action is unabated as new threats pop up from unexpected sources. The action is on a par with other books in this series, but I believe the writing shows more maturity. The stories are exciting and educational for each book in this series.

Are all mythos connected?

Kevin Tumlinson has done it again. This is a a Dan Kotler/Roland Denzel thriller, and one of the best. It is a continuation of The Brass Hall, but that is not required reading in order to enjoy this novel.
Dr Kotler isn’t the favorite in the academic world, but with recent events he’s been involved in thanks to his position as consultant to Historic Crimes, his peers seem to be more receptive.
When he is contacted about heading a dig he started over 20 years ago, he’s thrilled. Denzel has a lot of vacation time saved and decides to tag along.
I don’t want to spoil the book, so suffice it to say, if you enjoy a little Indiana Jones, mixed with thrills and chills, grab this book!

This book is another great addition to the Dan Kotler/Roland Denzel series. Full of action, adventure and discovery, it is just the sort of book we amateur archeologists love to read.

I took a half of a star off because the scene at the cliff top stretched my credibility just a tad too far, unlike Mr. Tumlinson's previous McGyver-like escapades. But this is still a remarkably well written and plotted story. It is based on a premise that surely might be believable.

These books invite the reader on incredible adventures in wonderful locations. The author does a grand job of describing the environment and the characters in the story. The reader is also trekking along side Dan and Roland. Very well done!

And now I'm going to dive into the next adventure.

What A Great Series!
April 7, 2019

I have read all of the Dan Kotler Series and loved them all. The God Extinction is no exception. Kevin Tumlinson puts so much historical research into this series that you almost believe that it’s a true story not fiction. He does a great job in character building and world building. The historical parts are so close to being real that that In itself is a little scary. I feel that there is a big surprise coming as to how this department, Historical Crimes, came to be part of the FBI. This was mentioned in The God Extinction. Start this series. You won’t be disappointed.

It only took me 2 days to read this book. The storyline was the kind that, once you put it down to do other tasks, your mind keeps returning to the book's story.
A lot of surprises there; with Kohler, his FBI friend and others. Supposedly "good guys" are "bad guys", etc. No won this time, there wasn't any break in the action to put this type of character aboard.

Once again, the archeology facts and what ifs caused me to spend a few hours (after I read the book) Googling archeology.

I recommend this book. In fact, I recommend the entire series because they are a lot fun to read and the places where these stories occur make you think.

Really people!

If you aren’t reading these books and the authors notes at the end, you’re missing a great read! The books just keep coming up with entraining premises. So far we’ve seen dear Dr. Kotler and Agent Denzel get into so much trouble yet manage to wiggle their way out of most. However, we have a lot of lose threads hanging out in the open....string theory, Eden(?), comparative anomaly’s, science vs religions, more bad guys, a couple of good guys? And money trails.......seriously, read from the novella “The Brass Hall” forward And have so much fun! Adventures, archeology, friendships, not too heavy, not too light.

What ever the reason Kevin T for writing this book it's not finished

Oh my word What a great adventure invited greeted kidnapped ready to die then all hell breaks loose. Dan and Roland are perfect together but as this wasn't an official visit by Agent Denzel he doesn't have a weapon so they both have to live by their whits. Loved this book but it's not finished Dan has to be involved with the rest of the search with Matook because that's where it all started. I highly recommend this book

This is my fourth 'Dan Kotler' book, and it most definitely won't be my last. I'm so hooked on Tumlinson's series that I pre-ordered this, and started reading the morning it came out. I don't often do that. I was very excited for it. I'm actually reading these all out of order, since "The Stepping Maze" was my first. I was as pleased with this story as I was the others, and will be watching for the next one.

Oh My Gods !

Kevin Tumlinson's The God Extinction: A Dan Kotler Archeological Thriller is another 5 star read in the series continuing Kotler's adventures. So much is added to the overall reader's experience by Tumlinson's notes on how the book was written and how problems of creating and writing the story were dealt with. Makes for a delightful and entertaining book and series. He even hints at what's to come in further adventures by introducing tidbits of new storylines.

More twists than a country lane

It was very hard to put the book down, there's just so much going on.
Kotler is his usual, excitable self with Denzel as blasé as ever.
Although it can be read as a standalone book, I highly recommend that you read the series, including the two short stories, The Brass Hall and The Jani Sigil.
Denzel needs to keep Kotler locked away in a corner somewhere.

Awesome!

I had to read this in one sitting! The story starts out as a lighthearted adventure... a return to the past. But of course there are twists and turns that show up. We wouldnt want anything less from Dan and as usual he comes through with flying colors. Although I was kind of sad for Dan not being able to follow through with the search. (Hopefully in a sequel to this story)

This is another thrilling Dan Kotler adventure, this time taking us back to Egypt, the mother-lode of ancient, mysterious ruins. Mystery, action, and danger ensue. Meanwhile, back at the ranch….err…in Manhattan, questions arise concerning the genesis of the Historic Division. What mystery lurks in the dark shadows there? Be sure to grab the next DK novel to find out, or continue finding out, or not find out. At this point, who knows? The suspense is utterly palpable.

Terrific Series That Just Gets Better

This series has great characters, adventures that take place all over the world, well-researched historical fiction elements, heroic acts, and an occasional hint of romance. I love how Kevin Tumlinson takes well-known mysteries like whether Vikings came to America before Columbus and whether there were technologically advanced civilizations in prehistory and turns them into suspenseful thrillers.

Best Book Ever!

Awesome, awesome read!
I have read all of the Dan Kotler series and consider myself extremely lucky to have had this pleasure, as Kevin Tumlinson is pretty much the best author I have found so far!
That being said, "The God Extinction" is my new favorite of this series!

Thank you for writing this book, I'm looking forward to reading your next book!

I enjoyed this archaolical thriller featuring Dan Kotler and Agent Denzel of the FBI. The premise of a joint union of all the gods met at one point and the meeting place was in Egypt. Interpersonal relationships make up a large part of the story and bad guys taking over is the other part. Easy to read, characters are believable. Book is entertaining

The Old Ones

A very enjoyable book that focused on drawing together some of the disparate myths around the pantheon of the old high deities. There are interesting discoveries under the hills of Egypt but alongside all of this there is the newer quest around what really is going on with this new department of the FBI.

I Have Found A new author

The God Extinction was my first exposure to Kevin Tumlinson. I have found another author to follow. Plus I will need to play catch up by reading all of the Dan Kotler books that came before this one! For those of you who like quick reads, this is one you will not put down.

Another fantastic history based thriller from a great author.

This book another in the great Dan Kotler series of books was a page turned from the off. If you like the Indiana Jones films you'll love these books. You can read this book as a stand-alone novel but I recommend that you read the series in order if only because they are all great books.

Think this is the best book so far

I liked this book of all about Dan Kotler. Even though short for me...it stayed action packed coupled with mystery, intrigue and develping new paths. The several diversive paths did not detract from the main thrust. And the story line did have more depth. Read this one.

Great story

The story was developed and fleshed out. I read this first and it worked out as a "stand alone" novel. Characters were real, there was some surprises that I wasn't expecting. Think I will read the series in order now.

Good, clean archeological adventure story! Kotler and Denzel are in Egypt following up on the Brass Hall discovery of 20 years ago. Of course, bad guys are there, too.
I enjoyed this book very much. Lots of excitement and interesting theories and discoveries!
