After dying, our main character found himself summoned by a young woman. She comes from a long line of summoners and had expected to partner up with a powerful being, like the rest of her family. Instead, she summoned a computer programmer, who from now on will be living inside her head. Powerless, he's unable to help her with the upcoming war. Disappointed that neither of them had been blessed by fate with some divine abilities, he decides to build a computer system inside her head himself. ================================
The book's second edition is now live! Most people liked the story but thought the editing was lacking so I'm happy to announce the novel went through a second round of editing, this time it was done by a professional in the field. All future tomes will also be edited by her.
Jean-Philippe Janssens(1985) was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium. He has been working as a Software Developer for about a decade.
Reading & writing has been a long time passion for him and he spends a lot of his free time imagining stories, whether for potential books or for role-playing games he runs as a Dungeon Master with his friends.
A man either from the near future our world or one very like he is summoned and comes to a world of magic. He is summoned as a spirit guardian for the books hero. Of course this soul is virtually powerless initially. However being a former software engineer in his previous life (evidently he lived a full life) and sets up compter in mind space. From there follows a journey of self discovery for both of them. Oh add the obligatory assassin's and oh fun.
The pacing is good but not great It is a fun read, but the characters aren't fully fleshed out. All the support characters exist only when needed to provide answers for th ed two main. Even the prime Catherine towards the end is only there for our spirit guardian. Still it is a good effort and enjoyable. A solid 4 stars that hopefully the author grows into 5 star story with experience.
I gave this 3 stars due to the fact that I really can't stand one of the main 2 characters. I guess that he reminds me of one of those haughty I'm super smart type of people. He just rubs me the wrong way. With that said, all of the characters are the typical characters you find in a fantasy novel. You have your mages, summoners, exotic animals, warrior with a tragic background, evil villain who swears he/she/it (it's a damn crow) isn't evil, but is doing what they are doing for the safety of the world and its people, etc etc etc. With that said, what makes this story stand out is that it has a solid plot line, but it's not super linear. There are various things going on throughout the book and there is a bit of an air of mystery right now going on about who is who. But with that said, this is a very vanilla story. There's nothing here to write home about. It IS a solid story though that's a pretty quick read. So if you're looking for something safe to read, this would be a good start.
The misspelling and the grammar are greatly off on this book. The story is interesting and intriguing but it seems to go by too quickly. So that could be due to it being a short story.
A computer programmer as a soul guardian - you're having a laugh!
A wonderful different read. A new look at magic, souls and moving upwards in gaining better and stronger powers. Our heroine is independent, fed up with what she sees around her (the poverty of the masses) ad our hero is from another world. A world that relies on technology - our own. The plot is a mixture of fighting for the underdog, getting strong in both body and soul whilst at the same time fighting the evil of the Crow. The Crow is a divinity that has developed a group of assassins who are ruthless killers. When she summons a soul guardian she doesn't expect a human soul to come through. A soul that has even began it's journey on the evolution path. Nor did she expect a computer programmer as her world does not run on technology but rather magic. Watch as the pair defeat assassins, evolve and take on the Crow. Why is the king insisting on sending them to the hidden deserted city? What does he hope that they find there? A wonderful piece of imagery with characters that draw you in.
The MC Joshua started out interestingly but became extremely annoying very quickly. His host Catherine is also another badly made character. The entire plot line is full of cliches and boring plot devices. I really do not recommend this book. While I despise cultivation plot lines I really abhor terrible world/character building even more.
Chapter three had several easily caught errors in it. Considering this is a second revision with the express intent of better editing I’m more than a little put off. I have to say the mc may be the cringiest character I’ve seen in a book to date and it’s a wonder his soul didn’t come with a mlp body pillow and a neck beard.
Read this book online as a webnovel but it's awesome as a book too.
I read this book as a webnovel online and found later it's now a book, so downloaded it and read some of it again and all i can say is that this is a good story that has some flaws but the story is good enough to make up for those flaws and really pulls you into the story.
I liked the story and the take on progression. The characters aren’t perfect and fall into problems. There are numerous half-edits or edit remnants and broken sentences that are quite distracting. Without them this would be a 5 star book.
It was an interesting book. It took a little bit for me to get into it, but it was worth it. This book also felt like a really long prologue so I really want to know how the next book is going to be.
This could easily have been 4 stars, but seriously hire an editor! This reads like a first draft. Don't talk directly to the reader it does not fit this kind of story.
Silly and not too serious fantasy book with delightful characters. Many hilarious inside jokes for programmers. Very simple system with levels for body and soul (no detailed character sheets). There were one or two consistency issues and a few typos but nothing egregious. Ends abruptly about half or a third of the way through what you might expect to be the first main story arch (which is actually pretty common in this subgenre). Expect the quality of a webseries and you will be happily surprised, expect a fully formed, thoroughly revised and edited book and you will probably be disappointed.
Fun book, with an original premise, and relatable characters. It's kind of high fantasy meets hacker thriller. It ends on a major cliffhanger, though. That's why I want a sequel. I can totally imagine this turning into a cyberpunk sort of thing.
