This book nicely brought together many elements of nurse leader coaching as well as other leadership lessons, but I didn't really take away anything new. I will be interested to discuss this with the NEC group to see others' takeaways. I think, and I hope it's true, that I am doing many of the coaching and activities discussed, though there is always room to improve. Since I started my manager position 2 years ago I do feel I've made strides in coaching, and have more work to do.
Much to my surprise, this was a very easy read. As someone who recently transitioned to a management position, this book provided a lot of insight and specific examples of staffing challenges and how to coach a team. The book provides a lot of examples of questions to ask when a team faces conflict or failures, as well as questions for annual reviews and evaluations. I would highly recommend this to nurse managers or those in leadership positions!
In general, I found the information in this book to be very well researched and I know I will refer back to this book often in my nursing career. What I especially appreciate is the Coaching Toolbox of Part 4. What was difficult is the editing of this book. I found many sentences difficult to understand and had to re-read them several times before realizing it was either a redundancy in words, or just a poorly constructed sentence.
Solid. An amalgamation of some of the more popular business and leadership books of the last couple decades appropriated to the nursing world. References people like Covey, Sinek, Lencioni, Kouzes and Posner, and others. Good, quick read.
Such a great read and an excellent reference/resource. A must read for everyone who wants to do more than just manage. The author’s insights, from an extensive career, are spot-on. Forget managing, start coaching.
