She's a bada$$. A woman with a gun on her hip and a badge on her belt. And she's good with a gun. Very good. She's dying to be a member of the unit - literally. Special Agent Kathryn Hanko soon finds out what it takes to join the clandestine law enforcement team known only as "the unit".Enduring a rigorous intake procedure, she fights through her anxieties over being the only woman in an otherwise all-male elite team. She cusses, she demands to be considered an equal to the point of taking "Hank" as her code name, and she drives herself to make sure she is an equal to the men around her. She doesn't want to be the team's weak link. Her arrival heralds the start of changes for the team and how they interact. Past rules that were obeyed without question are now challenged. The changes that ensue solidify the team she is now part of as the team's sniper and firearms expert.Does she make the grade? Of course she does, and faces her first mission with them against the terrorist group Camp Chaos.
Anne Fox is an author (obviously), firearms instructor, former flight instructor, and holds degrees in music and biochemistry/molecular biology. She currently spends her time writing, traveling, and participating in marksmanship competitions.
Living in the desert Southwest city of El Paso, Texas, she draws heavily from her own experiences and past travels while accompanying a husband in the military to bring life to her stories. She enjoys traveling and seeing what the United States has to offer while based out of her travel trailer.
Her non-human friends include two Maine Coon cats (Sigwan and Hebert), a flock of chickens that lay blue eggs, and a pond full of goldfish. She also participates in El Paso's Community Cats program by caring for a colony of feral cats. She enjoys a host of hobbies which she also draws from for her books: rockhounding, gardening, jewelry-making, beadwork, silk flower arranging, and other crafts.
Ridiculous. So an elite squad always comprised by males finally allows a woman in. And what a woman! Within weeks, the titular head of the unit, a strong, brilliant male, is in love with her and decides he has to quit the unit because he can't function any longer with the strict no social interaction policy with other squad members. Of course, the entire squad rallies around them both and immediately gets the overseers to allow marriage within the squad. Great, right?? Edited well, written okay, but SUCH a stupid plot.
Slow and tedious story of a highly unlikely FBI female agent who joins a top secret unit. The story mostly relates to the agents training and the make believe toys they use. Dave your time.
DNF This book is sooo boring. Half way thru and I'm still learning about the recruitment process. Seriously, I was excited, buying this book coz I'd heard she was a good writer. Page after page of recruitment. Te-di-ous
I was completely bored through the whole recruiting process. Then the whole falling in love was just ridiculous and I highly doubt I’ll read the second book.
This is the kind of book I enjoy. The Unit is a small, tight group of elite, highly trained and very secret people recruited from all of the law enforcement agnecies, all experts in at least two fields. They are called upon to solve crimes, catch criminals, that no body else can. Reading about how they recruit new members, the training and the dynamics between the members was great reading for me. There is a lot of graphic bad language among the members, about which I have read criticisms - but frankly, although no one in my family or among my acquaintance would ever use such language, but this book is realistically written, the characters well drawn, and frankly, it's only what one would expect among such a group in such circumstances and doesn't bother me at all. I have two criticisms: how is it that a new recruit suggests things that I would have thought the Unit members would have thought of already, such as how to track; and since the psych evaluation is so thorough, how was the fact that one chosen new recruit was a nut case not picked up? These things aside, I will be trying to read as many of the 18 (so far) books in this series!
This is the first book in the series by Anne Fox, and I would think the best one to start with because Fox goes into so much detail of what it takes to be a special agent. She either has and/or did intense medical research. I would say Fox also has a good back ground in computer specialization. And, she knows her guns. That said, it is the character development that moves the story. By the time the action really starts, you know each character and are rooting for them. This is not normally the type of book I choose to read. I love history and that is normally what I read. Plus, I have no interest in guns, but I just skimmed over those sections. The rest I found very interesting. I think The Unit would make an excellent movie or even more so, a TV series with a female lead. The Unit is well written and Fox left you wondering where and when Spot will again appear. Celia Martin
The wonderfully developed characters continually provide surprises as the story unfolds as each one deals with their strengths and weaknesses. A interesting take on a thriller that focuses on the human side of the team instead of the usual blood and guts. The story grabs you from the first page and the many twists and turns in the story make it a real page turner that makes it hard to put the book down. Don’t start reading it if you are not prepared to stay up all night!
I can’t wait to read the other installments in this well crafted series.
I found Camp Chaos although well written very slow to the point of me almost giving up halfway through. By the title, cover and description I was expecting an action thriller but instead, the novel read more like a romance. I personally found the excessive bad language unnecessary and there was too much of the book spent describing relationships, feelings as well as The Unit's everyday life such as what meals they were preparing and what they were wearing. By the reviews, many people have enjoyed this book but unfortunately, it wasn't for my taste.
This was the most Intriguing read, EVER!! The group, is tasked with capturing, what turns out to be a huge group, that is killing people all over the US. They have to find where their headquarters are and who exactly is funding the killing that is happening. Who is funding them and find that person, too. Beware, you won't want to put this book down. Until the very end!! A DEFINITELY AWESOME READ!!
This team is amazing and the action is exposive! I like the commadarie between the team members a family for sure. I loved Hank and Spud together bringing chuckles also romance. I just loved Luigi he's one of a kind. A well written and thought out book. You keep writing I will keep reading. If you have not read this book you are missing a great novel!! Bravo!!!
As an avid reader, I wish we had more authors with Anne Fix with her masterful level of creativity, humor and awareness of the need for accurate technical lingo regarding simple everyday physics and possibilities. As a Federally licensed CFI with multiple additional ratings, I especially appreciate her realistic aviation scenes and terms. My only complaint is that this novel ended, even though I retried reading slower toward the end!
Watch out black ops The Unit has you in their sights and they have two snipers on the team. The Unit is a team of former Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, FBI and other alphabet groups who want the perps in jail and not in the ground. With all the different specialists covered and cross trained they will not be stopped. Enjoy every moment with The Unit.
Wow! Interesting and informative about subjects that are current in today's society! The characters Ms. Fox pens thoroughly engulf you in their perspective and personalities and you find yourself engrossed in their actions and emotions, didn't set this book down until every page was read!
I found it hard to put this book down. I was going to read 2 or 3 chapters at a time. When I noticed I was on the 10th chapter in 1 reading, I forced myself to put the book down. The characters were great. The writing was great. I felt like I was right there in the story. I am looking forward to the next book.
Interesting characters with unusual interactions. A log of the human side of the team instead of all blood and guts. Well put together story. A few stretches of the imagination here and there, but well done.
Interesting characters and some really far out spy paraphernalia. A lot of down time but interaction between characters is fun. It is however unlikely that one character could think up ALL the improvement
Easy to read and understand. Characters are human and likeable. Serious issues addressed but handled well. Humorous and serious in one sitting. Wish to follow characters.
The unit is a very small top secret organization based in Quantico that takes on jobs the FBI needs assistance with. The unit takes on a female sniper who manages to change some rules. A lot of action.
Makes you wonder if things actually DO happen that way...loved the way Hank and Spud fell for each other, but hard to believe it’s real that fast....all things considered, very interesting !
This was a very fun read. I liked the characters and all of their quirks. This was a very interesting group. I really enjoyed the way they worked their mission too. I look forward to reading more about them.
Few counter Terrorism books are written from the viewpoint of a female snip the same time. a darn good story ater. This one skewers some of the rules used in military circles while presenting
The journey of spud and Hank as both lovers and members of the unit. It is fast paced and full of humor, members of the unit and their strengths as they tackle what other special, FBI and assorted agencies have been unable to solve.
+ Great character development. Before you get to the action you’re already invested in the outcome. Well written. - Insta love isn’t believable. A bit tedious or slow at times. These two almost made this a DNF.
