A second mystery for thirteen-year-old Agatha Oddly – a bold, determined heroine, and the star of this stylish new detective series.
Agatha Oddlow’s set to become the youngest member of the Gatekeepers’ Guild, but before that, she’s got a mystery to solve!
There’s been a murder at the British Museum and, although the police are investigating, Agatha suspects that they’re missing a wider plot going on below London – a plot involving a disused Tube station, a huge fireworks display, and five thousand tonnes of gold bullion…
My thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Children’s for a review copy of this book.
Murder at the Museum is the second in the Agatha Oddly series of books, a children’s series. Agatha Oddlow is thirteen and a very busy thirteen-year-old indeed. She is a detective and has been one for as long as she can remember, and any time a mystery piques her interest, she simply has to look into it. She is a great fan of Agatha Christie, her namesake, and especially of Poirot. In this one, the case she works on is a murder at the British Museum—one of the staff members has been stabbed for no apparent reason, and the only artefact missing is one of little value. So robbery was obviously not the motive. Agatha also attends the prestigious St Regis school as a scholarship student, where her friends are Liam and Brianna, who also help with her investigations. It helps that Brianna has her own chemistry lab at home and can run various tests. [Brianna was a member of the “Chic Clique”, a typical popular girl, but is now friends with Liam and Agatha, with whom she can be herself.] And if that wasn’t enough for a thirteen-year-old, Agatha is also awaiting tests to become a member of the Gatekeepers Guild, a secret organisation that works to keep London (in fact the country) safe, and has access to a network of tunnels and passageways under the city which can get them anywhere. Her mother was a star member, and died in somewhat mysterious circumstances which Agatha wants to get to the bottom of. Oh, and to add to all of that, Agatha’s father seems to have a secret too! All of this together makes for an action packed story where all these threads move along together to create a fun and exciting read.
I read this book without having read the first one, and while reading them in order would have made things a little clearer in terms of the background and the Gatekeepers Guild, not doing so didn’t interfere with the enjoyment of the story too much. Agatha herself I thought was a very likeable character, with a good deal of spunk, and not too much respect for the rules. The story is told in first person by Agatha. Though she is a fan of Christie, the way her mind works (sort of like the Mind Palace, which if I remember right is from the Sherlock TV series) and the case itself reminded me much more of Sherlock Holmes than Poirot. Some of what how she goes about solving her case also reminded me of Enid Blyton’s Findouters books (disguises and such). Liam and Brianna seem pretty likeable too, but I didn’t feel I got to see enough of them or at least them in action as much as we do (and obviously so) Agatha. The mystery itself, since I had Sherlock Holmes on my mind was something I could guess, the what at least, but still it was good fun. With the thread of her mother’s case continuing on, and of course another mystery to solve, this is a series I will definitely enjoy exploring. Till the next one comes, I still have the first to read. Great fun.
I LOVE AGATHA! Wow, what an amazing character. She’s sarcastic, witty, sharp, unique, interesting, & makes for a very entertaining read lol. If you like books with secret Guilds, a few trials/puzzles/ciphers/coding, danger, mystery, & a MC who takes risks..is smart, brave, charming, & basically a super sleuth..these books are for you! Also, just amazingly written characters in general-both the good & evil characters are so well done. I still love her pa, & her best friend Liam & their dynamic. Then a new friend is added to their team, & I love the whole story of how it came to be. Now the THREE of them make a great team, & the dynamics are even better, if possible. We learn even more little tidbits about the secondary mystery I mentioned before with Agatha’s mom, & the main mystery was just as great as the last books as well. You fall fast for Agatha, & you root for her the whole way, & you feel like she’s one of your own friends, & you are right there with her steeped in mystery & danger. SO GOOD! The chapters are longer, but I honestly barely noticed because they are such fast-paced, high stakes, suspenseful, incredible reads. HIGHLY recommend. Another beautiful cover by Alba Filella too.💜
I know how harsh it sounds, but I genuinely believe that this plot (in anyone else's hands) could have been brilliant, but this book really fell flat for me. I find Agatha immensely annoying and many elements of this book either bored me or frustrated me (the constant sneaking out, the beyond odd secret organisation, the constant over the top descriptions of outfits, etc etc). I know I'm not the intended audience for Agatha Oddly (and that being the series title is another annoyance for me!), but there are so many other MG mystery series out there that I've loved. I just wish this could have been one of them.
I know I am not the age group intended for this book but I love it anyway. And my preteen self would have loved it too. Agatha lives in London with her dad and solves crimes with the help of her two best friends and a secret society. She gets into some sticky situations. Thanks to her photographic memory and knack for solving ciphers she keeps London safer for everyone. Can't wait to read book #3.
This book must come with a disclaimer.... All the stunts performed by the the 13 Year old Agatha is a pure work of fiction... Should not be tried by kids.. Cause there is no stopping me i am gonna go investigate a case and get myself killed easily on the first step itself..🫡 (well i m an adult but see myself as a 22 yr old kid)
Would admit at some stages i really got irritated by Agatha...But then realized that don't we adults too make mistakes don't we act sometimes purely overwhelmed by emotions then how do you expect a 13-year-old not to act that way... How can she be the perfect detective without doing some sort of stupid mistakes (she's way smarter than me though) ..
Well speaking of the plot.. I would say some of the twists were as a i expected.. But that doesn't mean it didn't excite me... I reallyyy enjoyed the adventure... Wait next is the last book of the series.....??? Nooooooooo........ 💔Don't do this to me...🥹
Second installment of the Agatha Oddly series - still charming as the first one, but a bit lack of focus in the mystery/case part, especially because the murder at the museum only took a very small part of the book.
Here, Agatha is more focus on becoming an official member of the Guild, and finding out what really happened with her mom. That's why the "main" mystery is a bit neglected here. Anyway.. still excited for the third book, though!
A fun mystery with lots of twists and turns. Fans of A Murder Most Unladylike and Friday Barnes will enjoy this series. Whilst this is the second book, the storyline was easy to follow despite not having read the first book, although I’m curious to read the first to get more background information on the Gatekeepers’ Guild.
I keep really enjoying this series but, so far, each book has ended with a villain having a mental illness and just... No. NO. Like, how can you write such a fun middle grade with so many little twists and turns and clues but completely rely on such a lazy and harmful trope?
Agatha Oddlow is a teen detective and when on the news heard that there had been a Murder at the Museum, she knew that she must look onto it...
I highly recommend this book (especially if you are the detective type of person) because Agatha can connect to so many people, not just me. She works out things in a creative, but also understandable sort if way. She will inspire some many people to become detectives if they would just read this book.
Murder at the Museum by Lena Jones sees Agatha dealing with going back to school while still waiting patiently for the trial to start to become a Guild member.
Will Agatha stop anything sinister from happening?
Agatha Oddlow Agatha Oddlow has loved her summer vacation and isn't thrilled about returning to school. The biggest reason is that Agatha has a mystery to solve, and she has to become the youngest Gatekeepers' Guild agent. Agatha loved the freedom that summer afforded her to investigate, and now she has to do it around school time. I love Agatha's tenacity to do whatever she wants without minding the consequences. Well, until she realizes that she may actually hurt someone that she loves by her gumption of getting involved in mysteries that she probably shouldn't be getting into yet. I can't wait to see what her next case brings Agatha.
The Mystery The first mystery happened to be a murder at the British Museum. After finding her first mystery since she solved the red slime, Agatha has decided that she needs to investigate despite Liam not thinking it's a great idea. Honestly, it probably isn't, but "No Case Too Odd" for the Oddlow Detective Agency. Agatha realizes that something further must be happening than a simple murder when she discovers much more. I have to say that Agatha had me going with solving the case. Ms. Jones got me real good on the culprit, and here's to hoping Agatha brings back up with her in the future.
Five Stars I am giving Murder at the Museum by Lena Jones five stars, and I recommend it. I love an excellent middle-grade mystery, and this one kept me guessing who could be that nefarious to plan this.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Murder at the Museum by Lena Jones.
This series found it's stride a bit more with this book, while very similar in tone to the first it was definitely a bit better. I liked the mystery a lot, as well as the ways it tied into Agatha's backstory.
Agatha Oddly likes to seize the moment to be detecting. But when will she be a real detective? Any case she can get her hands on she will solve it! Is she ever going to be an agent. Will she ever do a real case that the agency makes her do.
Spoiler alert! I’m about to spoil literally the whole plot!
So... I didn’t enjoy this book much. I didn’t understand the plot AT ALL... unless I missed something, they didn’t actually solve the Murder? There was the stuff about Agatha getting into the guild, and then they discovered a secret plan- but the murder wasn’t talked about much! I liked the writing style , the characters, and the first book in the series. But the plot was really jumbled and just not for me.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. I think the autbor(s) need to focus more on the eccentricities of Agatha as this is what I enjoyed the most about the first one.
I liked it but I did not love it. Agatha seemed somehow even more unrealistically perfect than in the previous book, with her Changing Channel and Sherlock Holmes-esque deducting skills.
This book was received from the publisher in return for an honest review
It was lovely to catch up with Agatha again just a couple of months after reading the first adventure in the series. This time Agatha stumbles across a breaking news article about a murder at the British Museum and decides she must know more. Her exploring leads her down to the old abandoned British Museum tube station where she uncovers a bigger mystery.
Once again I found the plot overall to be well paced and interesting. The title is perhaps a little misleading as although the murder at the museum is what first comes to Agatha’s attention very little of the book is actually spent investigating the murder. Instead we follow Agatha as she investigates underground tunnels, and eventually manages to tie everything together in the dramatic climax to the story!
There were a couple of points where I felt that the narrative over explained some aspects, but then I reminded myself that I am an adult reading a MG book and it’s understandable, at the other end of the spectrum the story contains some quite big words, I’m not sure I would have known what effervescent meant as an eight year old… I’m not sure if that is perhaps a symptom of the way this book is written, by a TV style writers room rather than a single author. I don’t think it would detract from the enjoyment of the book, just expect a few questions from your little ones about what one or two of the words mean.
I have developed such a fondness for Agatha over the course of this book and the previous. Throughout Murder at the Museum we see the continuation of Agatha trying to discover the truth behind her mother’s death. There’s a section in the story where Agatha believes she is finally about to get the answers she’s looking for only to be disappointed, and that was actually quite sad to read. I hope before the series ends Agatha will get to find out the truth.
I was pleased to see Liam back, and that Brianna has permanently removed herself from the CC’s and become good friends with Agatha and Liam. I enjoyed seeing the professor back, although the jury is currently out on Sofia Solokov the young gatekeeper assigned to become Agatha’s mentor. I’ll have to see what the third book brings and maybe make up my mind…
Final Thoughts Murder at the Museum is another fun case to follow alongside Agatha Oddly. I think the series is a little like The Famous Five for the current generation of young mystery lovers. I’m looking forward to The Silver Serpent!
This book is for beginners . The third book is so much intresting than first and second one. It kept me engaging till the last page of this book.
Agatha Oddly a thirteen year old child who has habit of detecting the problems and finding and became a member of gatekeeper guide. Her first case to solve is finding Sheila Smith who had been kidnapped by someone.
There are more twist and turns. somewhere not even able to find out. I personally loved it in different way.

The book was about mystery and detectives and it was a thrill to read. The main character was a girl called Agatha who wanted to be part of a detective group. This group was The Guild. She went through a series of trials to be part of the detective group and the reason she wanted to be part of this particular group was because she loves solving things, exploring, and most of all she wanted to find out why her mum died in a bike accident when the bike had no scratches when it hit the car as she looked at it.The Guild has a rule that you should only work on what the professer tells you to ,however,Agatha was already working on a case by the time she was accepted into the group and that was to find out why her mum died and who was robbing the bank, and most especially why there was a murder in the museum. While on that case, the professer of The Guild found out and sacked her as an agent. But Agatha had refused to give up being a detective, so she kept on working on her mission. But when she kept on going on her mission, she got kidnapped, although in the end,she survived.I think the lesson in the story was always listen but do your thing and be safe, always tell someone where you are going, always have someone you know with you and never give up.
It was a quick read but had thick chapters and was catchy. It was different from other books in a good way because unlike books that example have the same plot, it had more interesting turns,up-and-downs,and it was thrilling because when you read the book, even from the start, you always are craving to read more and you want to know what is next.

📚 Murder at the Museum es un misterio juvenil bien escrito, ágil y emotivo.
Yes yes, I know its a middle-grade book but I had the most amazing time reading this book :P I LOVED THIS BOOK...... I wonder why the author hasn't released another in the series. I have definitely become a fan of the series because of its simple yet brilliant sleuthing tracks.
The character of Agatha Oddly has been brilliantly conceived and made to grow. You can see the potential in the character if you have read the first book before this one. But that doesn't mean that you can't pick this book without going through the first one. You can totally do it. The first book and then this book all has a new case and a new sleuthing in progress. Of course, characters are appearing from the first book but you will get enough notes to know who they are and what their roles are in the book.
Do not underestimate this book as a simple middle-grade read because the book has much more to offer and it delivers it on point. I loved this book and have definitely become a fan of the series. It's definitely a quick and light read but an amazing and exciting read at that.
Agatha Oddly: Murder at the Museum Author: Lena Jones Genre: Mystery / Adventure Summary: This is the second book in the Agatha Oddly series, and it was really exciting! Agatha finds herself solving another mystery, this time at the British Museum. A famous historian dies, but Agatha doesn’t think it was just an accident. She teams up with her best friends, Liam and Brianna, to figure out the truth. There are lots of clues, secrets, and a big mystery to solve!
Favorite Character: Agatha for sure! She’s super smart and brave, and she never gives up. I also love how she and her friends, Liam and Brianna, always stick together. They make a great team!
Personal Reflections: I really liked this book! The museum setting was cool, and the mystery kept me interested the whole time. Some parts were a little easy to guess, but it was still fun to read. I wanted to know what would happen next, and I liked how Agatha figured things out.
Would I Recommend It? Yes! If you like mystery books that are fun and exciting, you should definitely read this one. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) A really fun mystery with a great main character.
