aka David Peters

Peter Allen David, often abbreviated PAD, was an American writer of comic books, novels, television, films, and video games. His notable comic book work includes an award-winning 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk, as well as runs on Aquaman, Young Justice, SpyBoy, Supergirl, Fallen Angel, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, Captain Marvel, and X-Factor.
His Star Trek work included comic books and novels such as the New Frontier book series. His other novels included film adaptations, media tie-ins, and original works, such as the Apropos of Nothing and Knight Life series. His television work includes series such as Babylon 5, Young Justice, Ben 10: Alien Force and Nickelodeon's Space Cases, which he co-created with Bill Mumy.
David often jokingly described his occupation as "Writer of Stuff", and he was noted for his prolific writing, characterized by its mingling of real-world issues with humor and references to popular culture, as well as elements of metafiction and self-reference.
David earned multiple awards for his work, including a 1992 Eisner Award, a 1993 Wizard Fan Award, a 1996 Haxtur Award, a 2007 Julie Award and a 2011 GLAAD Media Award.

Flashback time to the 80's when Spider-Man ran around in the black suit. I'm not sure why Peter David wrote this nostalgic series, but I don't really care. These were the days of some of my favorite Spider-Man stories, so, "Yes, more please." This takes place post-Secret Wars and pre-Venom.

I keep forgetting to swerve Marvel's Limited serials. Despite Peter David writing it, and big event artist Greg Land drawing it, this supposed untold story of Spidey weeks after getting his black suit, falling afoul of Mysterio is essentially pants. 3.5 out of 12.

I really enjoyed this story, set as it was during one of my favourite parts of Spidey's history. Peter's just got back from Secret Wars (the first one) and is sporting his swanky new black costume, entirely oblivious that it's actually the alien symbiote that would eventually become Venom!

Peter David knows his Spidey history (he was writing Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man at roughly the time this story is set, so he should do) and he's clearly having a blast picking up his old toys again. The only thing that lets the book down is the uncomfortably soft-porn-y artwork by Greg 'Lightboxer' Land. Will that guy never run out of dirty magazines to trace from? Do Marvel editorial not realise that's what he's doing or do they just not care?

4 stars for the story, 2 stars for the artwork.

This is quite a good mini-series. Peter David brings back the slimmer back suit Peter he get during the original Secret War event. The art is amazing for a spiderman book but the story is lack of emotion and guilt punchline we get on old spiderman comic.

Who doesn’t love a flashback? Set during the original Alien Costume Saga, Symbiote Spider-Man tells a tale of Spider-Man, Mysterio, and the Black Cat that has never seen the light of day. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really explain why it’s being told now other than…just cuz?

Writer Peter David drops himself into continuity well enough – the storyline slots simply into the early days of the alien costume, bringing with it all of the things that make the era so memorable to start with; Pete’s always tired because the symbiote’s taking him for a ride, Black Cat’s struggling with her love of Spider-Man if not Peter Parker and the secret origins of her luck powers, etc. etc. but other than that, it’s kind of a flat Spidey story.

Mysterio’s a good villain usually, and he has some lofty ambitions here that lead him into contact with Johnathan Ohn, as well as the Kingpin, but eventually he just becomes a bit one note, falling for a fisticuffs resolution rather than anything more cerebral, which is a shame.

The art is by Greg Land, which means all the Spidey and Mysterio stuff is great, and anything involving Black Cat makes me feel decidedly uncomfortable, which is an achievement considering I’m super male and super gay. The man just shouldn’t be allowed to draw women until he can draw a facial expression that doesn’t look like an orgasm. Yeesh.

Symbiote Spider-Man’s not bad. It’s a run of the mill Spidey mini-series that kind of only exists so that Marvel could put out a story featuring Spidey and Mysterio while the Spider-Man: Far From Home hype train was in full swing. But Mysterio’s also in the main Amazing Spider-Man book, which is much better than this, so again I ask…why did this exist?

[There’s also a follow-up mini-series featuring the Hobgoblin on the horizon, so maybe there’s a grander plan here that I can’t quite see just yet. We’ll see.]

4.2 stars. A nice well written contained story. Black Cat and Mysterio join the fun. Def recommend checking it out. See the single issues for more of my thoughts.

This was fun! A nice surprise.

Basically Peter David goes back in time when Young Peter Parker was in his devilious Black suit whooping butt and taking names. Also screwing Black Cat, because DAMN, she is fine. So in doing so we have a story that focuses mostly on Quinn (Mysterio) as he wants his revenge on Spider-man. This takes place in a different time period, so you'd expect no surprises, but there are a few.

What I thought Peter David did well was Parker being funny. Not only that but the Symbiote was actually scary, which we don't always see. Also, the art was actually pretty decent which is a surprise. Saying that, Mysterio just doesn't come across very scary, Kingpin feels like a odd cameo, and the ending is a little too simple for me.

But overall way better than I expected. A 3.5 out of 5.

Great story and artwork!

I love that it doesn't have to do with the current life events of Spidey, but it adds to the continuity from a period of time in his past.

Great story, fun, and really makes the symbiote more alive than before.

A fun little romp with some amazing art. It isn’t perfect, but I had a blast. Ended way too soon. (And wtf is with the toilet paper quality of the binding for the graphic novel. Cmon Marvel, don’t be a cheapskate. It’s not my fault nobody buys comics anymore).

A new story set during the "Alien Costume Saga" of Spider-Man's life (including references to previous issues!) is contained here. While Peter is dating Felicia and Aunt May refuses to talk to him, Spidey takes on Mysterio and Kingpin.
The story is pretty straight forward, but well written and illustrated. Just a fun read overall, yet nothing completely stand out about it.
Recommend.

So this isn’t bad. Probably brought on largely by the recent boom in Venom and Mysterio appearing in a movie. But what stood out to me the most is Greg Lands art was actually tolerable in this! For the first time I can remember in a long long time. There’s still a couple of his questionable facial expressions, but otherwise it’s a decent looking book

Pretty cool story that takes place back when Peter had the black suit. Mysterio is the main bad guy for MCU synergy and he’s pretty cool in this. Felicia is awesome.

This is a perfectly fine story (maybe even good!), but it's not clear why anyone felt like it needed to be told. Was the point just to push Mysterio issues into stores as the last movie was coming out? Is it because Marvel still believes (see Venomverse, Absolute Carnage) that printing symbiotes is printing cash?

Or is because David or someone thought there was an interesting twist here that I didn't see?

Ha, 47 reference! Thank you! The artwork is better than the story in this miniseries. After aquiring his black suit during the Secret Wars, Spider-Man feels stronger than ever. He still has it under control at this point, but for how long?

Quentin Beck, or Mysterio as he prefers to be called, isn't faring too well. A bank heist turns sour when he gets a woman shot and killed. He intends to hang up the costume when Spider-Man attacks him. He lies to Spidey about the woman being his sister and forces him to retreat. Mysterio then witnesses the workings of Spidey's new black suit. His curiosity about the suit keeps him in the villany game a while longer.

I'm on a Peter David kick lately via X-Factor, and the black costume era was when I first started reading Marvel, so I thought I might as well give this a go. But while it has some of that usual David wit (I especially liked the line about how nobody wants to see Spider-Man on Broadway), and Greg Land's art looks less like he's been tracing softcore porn than usual (maybe he's improved at long last; maybe it's just an inker and/or colourist who know not to indulge him), it can't get past that usual problem for stories inserted into the past, where we know nothing much can really change. At their best, they lean into that, but this tries to use as its spine a whole character arc for Mysterio which we know can't go anywhere and as such feels a little like cheating when it tries to get us invested. Not terrible, but wholly missable.

No aporta realmente nada.

COLLECTS SYMBIOTE SPIDER-MAN (2019A) ISSUES #1-5

The idea behind this series is that we are seeing stories for the first time that happened shortly after the original "Secret Wars," while Spider-Man was wearing the black suit, but before he realized that it was an alien entity. I like the premise, and I enjoyed the story. Black Cat was a big part of Peter's life back then, and this volume made me realize that Black Cat is likely my favorite of all of Spider-Man's past love interests.

A story from Spider-Man's days with the alien costume. Pretty well done, with the author doing a good job balancing the story's needs (stay true to the era, but also keep the sliding timeline in mind; do something novel with the symbiote; involve Mysterio in an interesting way). The result doesn't knock it out of the park, but it's a satisfying read, especially if you're familiar with the original tales. (B+)

Peter David keeps things clicking along nicely in this fun, action-packed story that features some of Greg Land's best art, IMHO. I'm not a fan of his at all given his depictions of women, and this trade still has Felicia Hardy showing off her cleavage in very posed ways, but that aside I thought the action was dynamic and the framing was cool, so it was an improvement on some of his past work. Looking forward to reading more.

This was fun! A nice surprise.

For this title we jump back into a Time Machine. Set during the original Alien Costume Saga post Secret Wars and pre Venom.

Basically Peter David goes back in time to give us a tale of when Young Peter Parker was in his devilious Black suit whooping butt and taking names. Also Peter is dating Black Cat, who can blame him? And Aunt May is refusing to speak to him (not due to Felicia).

So in doing so we have a story that focuses mostly on Quinten Beck (Mysterio) as he wants his revenge on Spider-man. This takes place in a different time period, so you'd expect no surprises, but there are a few.

What I thought Peter David did well was Spider-Man not being being funny. Not only that but the Symbiote was actually scary, which we don't always see. We see the effects the suit takes on Peter driving him to fight too hard, no quips, just straight up ass kicking.

Also, the art by Greg Land is simple but equally beautiful in its simplicity.

The story is pretty straight forward, but well written and illustrated. Just a fun read overall. Looking forward to reading the other titles in this series.

Really good read and a welcome return to the symbiote Spider-Man I've always loved. Peter David's writing is great but I wish the same could be said Greg Land, who's character faces are just bizarre looking, I wish he just kept Peter in his mask the whole time because he just looked so strange. This being my only gripe and the thing that in my opinion kept this from a 5 star rating.

The correct name for this book should be: A Tie-In of the Alien Costume Saga Written 36 Years Later, Simply to Give Mysterio an "Interesting" Story, Taking Advantage of his New Popularity Thanks to the Movie

RCO009_1557335408

It is not clear to me if the story takes place in the 80's or now, since sometimes there are some dialogues about modern situations such as the "Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003" and things like that. I think rather that David wanted to give it some freshness to this volume, but I feel it totally unnecessary.

RCO001_1496030277

Basically the story is about Spider-Man getting used to his new alien costume. Felicia being a much more comprehensive girlfriend than I remembered. and Mysterio devising malevolent plans to steal a piece of that "strange new suit".

RCO010_w_1560361323

It's not that bad, but definitely if you want to read something about the black Spider-Man suit, you better buy the original 80's saga ...
