Fire Dragons, the most powerful dragon race on Earth, until the war left them as shadows of the race they once were.

Little more than slaves to the water dragons, the fire dragons live in destitute conditions. This includes Sparks, who once knew a life of luxury. When she accidentally kills a water dragon, she’s forced to flee, landing herself on the water dragon’s most wanted list. At the same time, a mysterious stranger shows up to aid in her escape.

What Sparks knows is that help is never free, but Phoenix insists that’s all he wants, yet Sparks can’t deny some connection to him. Together, they set out to free her people, but they’re running out of time as the water dragons close in.

Will they survive long enough to end the captivity of the fire dragons or is their new love destined to burn?

Hit the ground running, and didn't let you go until the end! Heather Karn has once again created an exciting and intriguing world-within-our-world, a modern day version of Game of Thrones (complete with queens and dragons!), with an utterly satisfying ending that left me with a contented sigh. A must read for this summer!

4.5 stars. I've been going through Heather Karn's books after they were recommended me, and so far this one is the most polished and well written of the 6 I've read. Story wise, I'm still a little more in love with Mate:Level 8 ( That one scratches a sweet sci-fi romance itch that is hard to satisfy given what's available in that genre), but this one was really good. Phoenix Awakened fits well with books like K.M. Shea's Magiford series. Only con of this book is that I don't care for the way everyone pressures Sparks about some specific things even while saying that it's her decision.

Synopsis:

Sparks lives in the slums. Once a member of a powerful race, she now abides by tyrannical rules enforced by the brutal water dragon guardians. These rules include never leaving the city, never fighting the water or earth dragons, and never letting her fire dragon out. When Sparks accidentally breaks these rules while defending herself, she embarks on a flight for her life. Can she trust the person who comes to her rescue?

Language: None
Violence: Abuse and fighting/war, but nothing graphic
Sex: Sexual tension and making out, no on-screen sex

Review: Phoenix Awakened by Heather Karn Author
Spice level: 🌶🌶🌶1/2

Heather created an amazing contemporary supernatural world where true love exists. This was a fast paced read that includes action with romance. Her writing makes this world a real place and makes you feel as if you are right there with the characters.

The characters are well developed, interesting and make you want to read them. This is one of those books where I wished it could keep going on indefinitely after reading because I had fun visiting their universe. This is definitely worth the time to read.
