He has illustrated over 80 books across a broad range of genres, from his best-selling preschool books The Wheels on the Bus (2010) and Old MacDonald’s Farm (2011), to his wordless book about extreme climate change, The Weather Machine, his hybrid comic/novel Monkey Boy, and his illustrated biography Faithfully Mozart, which was a finalist in the 2006 Montana New Zealand Book Awards.
Donovan has also worked with top New Zealand authors: recreating Dashing Dog by New Zealand’s world famous Margaret Mahy; illustrating two of Barry Crump’s Pungapeople books, co-creating the internationally acclaimed Dinosaur Rescue series with Kyle Mewburn, and illustrating The Three Bears Sort Of by Yvonne Morrison, which won the coveted Children’s Choice Award at the 2014 NZ Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.
When he’s not immersed in the world of picture books, Donovan plays guitar, piano and saxophone, and is front-man for Hot Tub, a 13 piece funk/jazz band. He has also been involved with the Taupo Theatre Company, both on stage and behind the scenes as a designer.

Acclaimed Cat airman Claude D'Bonair is still fighting the fight against the DOGZ army. He's taking a break in London with his friend Syd Fishus when they are suddenly whisked away to a secret headquarters to meet Commander Snokkums from Paris HQ. She has a new mission for them!
They are given secret intelligence supplied by non other than the famous NZ spy, The White Mouse. They have to use this information to help recover the key piece of important fighter plane plans. This piece will enable CATZ to finish the war once and for all.
But there is a spy in the ranks, the plane plans are in someone's head (not on paper), and DOGZ have a cunning plan of their own. Will Claude be able to defeat them once again?
Full of action, Claude's cunning, codes and clever cats; No.6 in this popular series doesn't disappoint! Donovan Bixley's fantastic illustrations are worth poring over all on their own.
There are beautiful buildings, codes to crack, and war machines to learn about as the ultimate battle between CATs (Cat Allied Troops) and DOGZ continues....
I love all the cat references throughout the story. See how many your young readers can spot.
