Nancy Drew Diaries #18

The Stolen Show (Volume 18)

Rate this book
Nancy, Bess, and George race to catch an international jewel thief in this eighteenth book of the Nancy Drew Diaries, a fresh approach to the classic mystery series.

Nancy is helping out her Dad’s friend, Louise Alain, and her dog, Marge, at an upcoming dog show in Montreal. Marge is a professional and needs someone she can trust to handle her at the biggest show of the season. Nancy is happy to oblige, especially since Louise invited Bess and George as well!

Of course, the three friends are investigating a crime within hours of their arrival. One of the show dogs was drugged and a giant wad of gum was matted into its hair. Louise asks Nancy to investigate and gives her a useful look at the dogs—their temperaments and styles are often a good window into the hearts and minds of their owners. But instead of solving a case of competitor sabotage, Nancy discovers jewel thieves have been using the dog show circuit as a smuggling operation.

The thieves are not comfortable with the teenage sleuth who’s asking too many questions. And when they make some serious threats, Nancy, Bess, and George quickly find themselves in dangerous territory.

Can Nancy discover the thieves’ identity and take home the trophy? Or is this one case where the bite is worse than the bark?

Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

Come on! Nancy Drew is more intelligent, discerning, astute, resourceful, braver and sharper than The Interpol's agents? I know this is a middle-grade book, but even when I was a child and I've read this kind of book, I've waited for some reasonable plot and facts. There really isn't much I have to say about this book. It's the next book in a series I follow. It's a pretty fun and entertaining book to read and I actually liked it better than some of the other books in the series. I also love dogs, so it was very interesting to learn about dog shows. The audiobook was very enjoyable as well.

A cute newer/more contemporary version of Nancy Drew. Had a nod to technology that didn't exist when the originals were written but still has the same sweet/smart characters. I was worried that updating the series to current day would taint the sweet nature of the books but all is good!

There's something about reading Nancy Drew, whether the old series or the new one adapted to contemporary times that just has such a cozy feel! That's why I read these every once in a while.
A dog show, Nancy as one of the handlers in place of a dear friend and a vacation with Bess and George in Quebec where the show is happening form the setting for this book. Where Nancy goes, intrigue follows and sure enough, there is jewellery smuggling added to the mix with the three friends drawn into the middle.
Lots of cute dogs, plenty of action and many helpings of Canadian poutine make this a fun ride with Nancy and her friends.

This was an intriguing story. I liked the dog show more than mystery involving it, but the mystery was interesting. I didn't like what Nancy did at the end. She was too careless. I also liked that this takes place in Quebec in winter, but it didn't seem like the story was taking place in Canada.

It was great to see Nancy and her squad at a dog show in Quebec city enjoying poutine. It is a fun and short read and shows off Nancy's ever detective skills.

The mystery part of this wasn't bad and it definitely wasn't the worst in the series. But I still can't believe Nancy would give away that one guys identity that way. Kind of annoyed me.

I never read any Nancy Drew books when I was a kid and I really wanted to see what the fuss was about! The story was cute, not believable at some points, but definitely fun for younger generations to read.

I’m almost caught up with the Nancy Drew Diaries series. There are currently 21 volumes in the series, and I’m up to number 18, The Stolen Show (Amazon) (AbeBooks). The modern Nancy Drew takes some getting used to, and more often than not, she’s investigating a case of sabotage. That trope got old many books ago, so I really wasn’t looking forward to this volume.

The mystery turns out not to be so much about sabotage, but uncovering an international group of jewel thieves. And for the first half of the book, Nancy is nervous and fearful, which is so not like the Nancy Drew I grew up with. And what’s she nervous about? Being a dog handler for a show in Quebec. I’m not sure why the publishers picked Quebec, because there’s nothing in the book that reflects the province of Canada other than the cold, and an Interpol detective that shows up. And somehow, Nancy outsmarts the Interpol detective!?

I’m not sure why the publishers seem to diminish Nancy with her nervousness and fearfulness. I haven’t read the current Hardy Boys series, but I’ll bet anything they’re not as full of self-doubt as the modern Nancy Drew. And quite frankly, while listening to this audiobook, I found my mind wandering during the first half of the book. Wandering so much that I listened to the book a second time. The first half of the book has a tiring amount of information about competitive dog shows. I’m all for slipping in information in children’s books so they not only have an enjoyable story, but learn something as well, but after a while, it got boring.

I will have to say this about The Stolen Show: there’s some real peril for Nancy, Bess, and George. I won’t say what happens to spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that there’s a dangerous situation which is reminiscent of the original Nancy Drew Mysteries. And Nancy is there to save the day, thankfully. I’m so glad Ned and Carson are MIA because oftentimes, Nancy is rescued by them and I’ve always felt that it diminished her skills as a sleuth and as a young independent woman.

Overall, this was an uneven book. Some parts, like the beginning fifty or so pages, were just boring as all get out, but the second half of the book is good. With Simon & Schuster being bought by Penguin Books, I wonder about the future of the books if they are continually wishy-washy like this volume.

Breathe. I just finished a three week span where I felt like I was cooking everyday. With my kids home for holiday break, they ate faster than I could cook or shop, but I loved the chaos of having them home. With both the holidays and baseball season behind me, I turned to Nancy Drew. My daughter who is still home and I both wanted to read the one book I have from the library, so we took turns in between other books. I decided that yesterday would be about rest, relaxation, and reading to get us back on track after the first full week of school and work after a month. The day was much needed, curling up on the couch with books and cats. I am impatiently waiting for the new Armand Gamache case from my library, so to my surprise, this case of Nancy Drew takes place in Quebec City during the city’s winter carnival. Yes, I detest winter with a passion, but how could I resist a mystery, albeit a short one, that takes place in Canada on a day when all I wanted to do was read on my couch.

Nancy is invited by her father’s friend Louise Alain to be a dog handler in Quebec Dog Show. The show takes place on the same weekend as Quebec’s winter carnival, so Nancy accepts the invitation, and Bess and George come along for a weekend retreat. The other two girls are more interested in Quebec cuisine- poutine, hot cocoa- while Nancy works as a handler for Marge the bull terrier as Louise recuperates from a broken ankle. Nancy and Marge hit it off right away, but during the training sessions it is obvious that someone is out to sabotage the show. Angie’s Marshmallow Fluff is found drugged with gum in her fur. Marshy has a chance to win best of show, and someone out there is looking for an edge. Until the perpetrator is caught, no dog is safe, and every handler is suspect. Nancy is supposed to be on vacation, but, of course, sleuthing finds her, and she is on the case while also working with Marge in hopes that she wins best of show. So much for a winter getaway.

The Carnival is highlighted by a masquerade ball. It is there that things get a little to far fetched for my tastes. First, Bess is kidnapped. Next, Nancy discovers that another entrant in the show, Charles DuBois is actually an undercover Interpol agent who is tracking an international jewel heist. A transfer is supposed to go down at the finals of the dog show, but Nancy and George are more concerned about getting Bess back safely. Charles implores the girls to focus on the heist if the ransom note warning Nancy to back off was truthful about Bess being returned once the dog show ends. To make matters worse, a winter storm is about to city Quebec, making roads impassable, making finding Bess’ whereabouts all the more urgent. This is a lot of threads for a mystery aimed at middle grade readers, making the case more far fetched than usual. As this is one of the later cases in the series, perhaps the consortium writing team wanted to spice things up to try to bring in more mature readers. If the ideas didn’t become cliched, the multithreaded mystery would have worked. Sadly, these multiple storylines created a mystery just a little too far fetched for my tastes.

Charles the Interpol agent tells Nancy not to get involved. Their goal is to find Surefire aka Sapphire the jewel thief. Charles does not know much about River Heights best detective, so, of course, Nancy and George find the goons hiding Bess before Charles has a beat on the situation. Sapphire is still at large, but Nancy has an idea of which handler it is because she questioned all of them when deducing who drugged Marshmallow Fluff. Thankfully, she was ok- any violence toward animals is not ok and I will not read a book if this is the case (no pun intended)- and the two threads are not related. Nancy is clearer on this than Charles, who is out sleuthed by Nancy and outsmarted by George’s technological skills. Charles notes that Interpol could use Nancy if she desires to attend college in Quebec and decides on a future in the force. Although these are stand alone cases, the idea of Nancy as an international sleuth as an adult is oh so enticing. I hope the consortium takes this into account when devising a new series or bringing the Diaries up to real time. The girls all have skill sets and distinct personalities and solve cases together but eventually they will have to go different ways as adults. With this case all over the place, my mind jumped to the possibilities of future stories, which sound more intriguing than the case at hand.

In the end, Nancy and Charles with help from Marge the terrier solve the case and find Sapphire’s stolen jewels. Bess is safe, and George eats all the poutine she desires in a weekend away from home. This case was too far fetched and cliched for my liking, even for a usual Nancy Drew case. I read this one to vedge on the couch and it served its purpose. I still enjoy these modern diaries more than the original series because there is more action and because Bess and George are active participants rather than passive bystanders. I am almost done with the series- I only have three or four books left. Hopefully, the next one will be better; otherwise I will have to write the consortium about the endless possibilities I have for Nancy as she moves toward adulthood.

Carolyn Keene provides another outstanding contribution to the Nancy Drew Diaries' adventures! This time it takes place in Quebec City and, honestly, has to be one of my favorites thus far! Not only beautifully written and character-building but genuinely entertaining and worth the read! As an animal lover, when a story takes place with animals at the forefront, my interest is already piqued. I found the added diversity of the location of the mystery compelling as well. In this edition of the Nancy Drew Diaries, Nancy finds herself in a bit more of a mystery to solve than anticipated. What initially highlights as a small case of a contestant's animal being drugged and given matted fur turns out to be something much bigger! A jewelry heist within the show as well! Could the two mysteries be connected? Nancy brings Bess and her cousin George along for the ride and to solve the mysteries; what could go wrong? The infamous phrase seems to work like Murphey’s law in that what can go wrong will go wrong. After attending a Masquerade ball, Bess finds herself kidnapped, and along with Nancy and George, Interpol becomes involved. We all know Nancy will do whatever it takes to save those she loves, even if it means bending the rules a bit. This story aspect brought to light the Nancy Drew I grew up loving! Will Nancy and George save Bess and figure out who drugged an innocent animal and is coordinating the heist? Ultimately, Keene finds a way to circle it back around and leaves the story on such a note with the characters that much closer.

Nancy has been invited to participate as a handler at a dog show when her dad's friend, Marge, cannot lead her dog in the competition. Nancy, George, and Bess head to Montreal for the dog show and unexpectedly run into a mystery. There is a bit of doggy sabotage and then something even shadier afoot! The amateur sleuth is up against a league of jewel thieves using the show to smuggle their stolen loot. Nancy asks many questions, makes many folks angry, and places herself in imminent danger to solve the crime.
Overall, The Stolen Show is a captivating and entertaining story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. While there were moments that stretched believability, such as Nancy outsmarting Interpol agents, and I still think she should rely more on her friends to avoid uncertain dangers, these are the very elements that add to the charm of the series. It's a delightful and amusing read for any Nancy Drew fan.
I recommend the series to Nancy Drew fans. The Stolen Show is available in both paperback, audio, and e-book formats, making it accessible to all readers.

This one was really good and I like the plot twist. I honestly thought it was just going to focus on the dog show but it doesn't.
And I don't want to give anything away so I'm just going to leave it there.
But I will say that the cover art is not accurate because I don't really think there we're really any Scottish terriers in this book. But I think there was one dog that was just mentioned in passive that was a Scottish terrier but none of the dogs that are mentioned a few times that are the pets of the culprits none of them are this breed. And in this book Nancy has to be the handler for this dog which is also not a Scottish terrier. So there really aren't even any Scottish terriers in this book.
At least not ones that are really talked about. So other than the cover art is not accurate this book is great 😃👍🐕🐩🐶🐾❤️

Growing up on the Nancy Drew Files and the OG Nancy Drew Mysteries this felt more child like then those did, but that could be from an adult view now over a child and views change.

This was an easy read and would say kids who are around the age of 11-12 would be the best targeted readers. One could read this to younger listeners since it is clean and wholesome who done it in the form of the other Nancy Drew books.

Even though there was, "that would never happen" moments and Nancy and friends in another country with no parent seems odd; I still enjoyed this enough to where I would give this to young kids looking for a mystery.

This is the latest book in the series of Nancy Drew Diaries. I've been going through the entire series for the last couple months, and I have now caught up on the series. Honestly, for the last book I personally read, I was a little disappointed in the obvious nature of everything. And also, Nancy was smarter than an INTERPOL agent? Be a little more realistic please.

This book did not dissuade me from the series. I may come back to it after the next book has been released, I may not. Either way, the series was cute, they were all quick reads, and overall I liked the series.

Nancy, Bess and George are in Quebec to help a friend at an international dog show when they stumble onto an international jewellery smuggling ring. In fairness, Nancy would never have found out about it if the baddies hadn't kidnapped Bess to start with, but hey, where would we be if her enemies were smart? Fun

Maybe I've been reading too many of the older Nancy Drew books. I don't dislike modern Nancy, but I disliked the way this was written in first person, and also just the way things were portrayed overall. I didn't get the feeling that the original books offered.

Nice family friendly listen. Narrator perfect for the tale. Granddaughter was disappointed that the dogs on the cover were not in the book. She was satisfied that other dog breeds were integral to the plot.

Wow, this one blew me away. A strong plot, great tension - this is as close to classic gritty Nancy Drew as this series ever got. No petty personal conflicts, there's a darker web of events that is wonderfully concluded. Definitely one of the best in the series thus far!

Man, I wish that the summary had ANY hint of the ACTUAL plotline of this book! I skipped it on my first readthrough of the series because it sounded incredibly juvenile and silly, but it was actually action-packed and full of smarts and intrigue. Also, Bess is SUCH a Daphne.

This was a pretty decent mystery; however, the premise and kidnapping had some unrealistic elements. How George and Nancy could sleep peacefully during Bess’ kidnapping blows my mind. It was honestly pretty intense for a children’s book.
